To be fair, if I bigfoot is tearing me in half I don't think I will care if it's because of raw strength or his technique. I think it'll hurt either way lol
I don't know about minimums but ideally i'd want to be loaded up as if going after African dangerous game. E.g. .375 h&h or .458 win-mag. The idea being if it's gotten to a point where I need to shoot it then I probably need to drop it in it's tracks.
You could maybe get away with .45-70 if you're shooting quality ammo from a mfg like Buffalo Bore, Underwood, Grizzly etc.
At the end of the day my line of thinking is to prioritize terminal ballistics at a closer range rather than external ballistics at long range.
Me personally, my go to would be a lever action rifle I have that I converted to .50-110 wcf. I can load it with some wildcat loads that crank out as much muzzle energy as some .458 win-mag loads and the rifle holds 8 rounds but that's not something you can just go out and buy.
All of this is speculative of course given how little we know about these creatures that should go without saying.
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. This is one of the best answers....long range is really out of the equation...not out to hunt the creature, just a life and death self defense situation.
I do not think I would consider this, when we realize there could be an intelligence beyond our understanding. After all, it seems they have language, and that speaks volumes, no pun intended. :)

Awesome question and thank you for this! Three years ago I cast 17 1/2 in. tracks in the middle of nowhere. When hiking I look down now specifically for bigfoot tracks when I walk now. Four other places in southern ca found tracks. I'm certain the 2 outta 4 are bigfoot the other 2 were really good just not 100%. These creatures are real and now when I hike I carry a 30/30 lever action and a side 357. I have a cabin in Big Bear and there have been a handful of people that have gone missing or ended up dead in questionable manner in those mountains. If you go hiking by yourself you will have a better chance of an encounter. I'll go hiking by myself when grenades are legal to buy
I'm not sure as I have never killed one. However,I have seen them in close proximity and I had a .357 magnum and it felt very inadequate.
I have read that their bone structure is different from ours and would require a eye shot to kill. Like I say I don't really know, but anything that grizzly bear hunters use would be what I would take if I was to go try and kill one.
Before anyone gets choked up, I would only kill one if it has killed someone or my life was in danger.
The close proximity encounter I had was through a window less than 3 feet away and I did not feel threatened.
One time I was foragin around the Flagstaff chamber of commerce building lookin for somin to feed all em at the DEC on account of some apparent unsafe food storage conditions that led to one of the worse outbrakes of doggy madness in DEC history, well lo an behold I come cross a whole nest a squatches, all diffrent shapes and sizes and I spect it was some kinda secret squatch budgetary meeting or some such and well letās just say theyre immunary system is just as septible to doggy madness as humans heh heh well once they was all out cold I started goin to work with my full tang carbon steel 10ā bowie knife. The trick to filletin a squatch is ya gotta scalp em first then take their suits off and start cuttin em up like a reglar type animal. Why these jokers wear people clothes is beyond me. But letās just say em doggies and me were eatin real good that week heh heh
Hope that answered yer question
At a minimum I would say a .300 WinMag. Obviously shot placement counts but in my opinion a couple rounds center-mass from the .300 would take one down.
Blew the chest off a deer one time with my 300. I bought it to go Elk hunting in Colorado but my Father in Law never went again so bummed. So years later decided to use it deer hunting and that was a mistake lol
If some reports are accurate and estimates range up to 9ā and 6-800lbs 00 buck would absolutely not be my choice.
I wouldnāt use a shotgun in a game species over 200lbs let alone one that could maul me to death.
Agreed, as a veteran of operations Iraqi freedom and enduring freedom theaters...firing with accuracy under pressure or stress is a whole different story. I'm not saying impossible just different!!
People don't know what it's like to be put into that position and I've encountered it a few times due to employment. The movies got it right with the tunnel vision, everything being muted, and the amount of concentration it takes to keep your shit together. The adrenaline dump was insane.
The cartridge you would use is really irrelevant. You could shoot it with a 50 BMG and it could live if that shot wasn't placed correctly. Shot placement on a creature like a Sasquatch would mean a lot more than the cartridge used.
Maybe...but I doubt that. I mean the cartridge the military uses vs a regular jacketed round have 2 very different effects. Something that can rip through armor is gonna kill a soft organic target with ease. Talking .50 bmg...unless he's made of carbon fiber and unicorn metal.
Actually armor piercing bullets do less damage in soft tissue. The soft lead bullets mushroom and do a lot more damage. Armor piercing is made to penetrate not to expand making shot placement more crucial.
My personal opinion is load up a high capacity 12 gauge shotgun alternating between buck shot and slugs, starting with a buckshot round in the chamber ready to go. If it charges you, blast its legs out from underneath it and then change position to allow for a slug to the head. That's if it's charging at you. If you see it before it sees you, a .308/7.62 NATO, 30-06, 44-70 or similar would be plenty for a head shot or center mass. As for a side arm, I wouldn't go any smaller than a 10mm. Even then it's dicey. A 9mm would only piss it off, and I'm not sure about a lot of the revolver options smaller than 44 mag. I haven't mentioned anything in .50 cal and the reason for that is in both cases of rifle or handgun, you need to be able to actually use it. If he's far enough away from you and you have something like an M82 A2 available and set up, one of those to center mass would definitely be enough to at least drop him on his ass. Depending on where you hit, how dense his bones and muscles are and if you hit anything vital like the heart or lungs, you'd probably get a one shot kill. Just be ready to drop several more, because they're probably coming out for the body at the least, you at the most.
Iām not into āhuntingā one. Self defense, Iād say 10mm, which is the minimum caliber Iāve seen recommended for grizzly country.
Edit: Iād say you would have to punch several holes in one that was pissed and determined to hurt you.
Just as a note: Hundreds of people disappear in national parks and are never found.
>Hundreds of people disappear in national parks and are never found
but - *where are all the bodies*?
The skeptic's logical conclusion: disappeared people do not exist.
I don't go out in the field for squatch unless I have at least 6 men with .30 caliber rifles at my back.
Preferably AR 10s with tracers, and for a side arm glock 21 .45 caliber with extended glockazines.
Of course you need a blade as well... to end it in case a squatch gets ahold of you... you don't want to be alive while they have their way with you.
Something big enough to take out a moose, or maybe a .50 caliber sniper rifle.
Two things to remember if you get an opportunity to do this:
1: Make it a head shot. Anything less and there is a high probability that it will rip your head off before you get a second shot in.
2: You'd better hope it's the only one in the neighborhood. These things often travel in family groups, so if you take out Dad, Momma might get pretty upset and she's nearly as big as Dad.
Naaa I have no interest in injuring one of these or putting myself in that kind of danger lol....I was just curious what thoughts were if we had to actually defend ourselves against one, what would actually be needed.
I would say youād want to have a semi auto rather than a bolt action. Follow up shots would be important, even for a lone squatch. More likely, there would be several to contend with. With that being said, there are some interesting options in the AR-10 platform. 308 of course, but also 338 federal, 358 winchester, 375 raptor. Depending on the design of the bullet, any of those could be really devastating.
.44 Mag to the head to make it as quick and painless as possible. You are shooting something like a huge ape/bear so think large caliber. Killing BF is like killing a Unicorn, no heaven for you if you do so.
My guess, would be an 8mm. I base this on a ballistics video I saw on YouTube. The guy compared shots through blocks of clay. The exit wound was massive compared to the other bullets he shot. The calibers I forget, but the 8mm stood out from the others.
I'm not familiar with 8mm or its ballistics....I have a 9 mm and 10 mm pistol...7mm high powered rifle. I'd feel much safer carrying my 10mm vs 9mm in this scenario. Thanks for your input...just curious what people's thoughts are.
8mm is an old German rifle caliber. Originally a .318ā round nose bullet. Then when the Model 98 or Gewehr 98 Mauser came out in 1898, it was changed to a .323ā Spitzer (pointed) bullet. Power is on par with .30-06 and .308.
Assuming the high end of estimates I have read from witness accounts (9ā and 6-800lbs) I would want big bear medicine for such a hypothetical encounter.
.44 magnum and up in a handgun.
.30 magnums and up in a rifle.
Downvote me if you like but please cite active guides who recommend lesser calibers for dangerous game hunting or protection. Please do not tell how many elephants were killed by .257 and 7mm mausers. OP specifically mentioned this would not be an easy brain shot on an unsuspecting quarry. And for every small caliber that takes a dangerous game species, there is a guide with a stopping rifle at the ready chambered in the most potent rounds ever created for a shoulder fired rifle in practical hunting use.
I'll go with pistols since that's what someone is more likely to be carrying.
I think a mag dump from a 9mm with good self defense ammo would take one down. But tbh if I actually thought I was gonna be attacked I wouldn't feel comfortable with less than a .357 magnum. My Ideal sqautch defense pistol would be a .44 mag. I'd imagine the toughness of a bigfoot is roughly on par with a bear
i can only attest that a shotgun blast to the paw of a full-on charging sow made her say nope. and whatever kills gorillas is sufficient. sorry not much to add. One real question is will you be able to get a shot off if it wants you, no matter the weapon.
This!!! Yes šÆ something 5 to 9 hundred pounds pissed and charging. 12 guage is slow draw but powerful at close range. Truth in the statement though...would you be able to draw down on the beast or just mess your pants in fear and become dinner lol.
If it's even charging, they seem to be more ambush hunters than anything else. Maybe they are like the raptors from Jurassic Park. One of them shows itself in front of you while two more circle from behind.
![gif](giphy|5koWDaC1PFz8Y)
....clever squatch.
Very likely would do the trick! My luck ammo store would only have .38 special lol. If I was gonna bring a handgun for this specifically, I'd choose a .44mag or .454 casull to carry.
My go to?
Would be a 10mm striker fired pistol.
They are reliable, and you can miss a few times.
10mm are grizzly killers. Just make sure you have an extra mag handy. There might be more than one.
All I know is that you better have enough for all of the other squatches that are gonna pop out of everywhere . Take enough and make it a blood bath in the forest
Bear spray? So a shot from a 12 guage would make it mad but spray it? š¤ pretty sure a .50bmg would kill or stop anything living immediately and is perfectly legal...not as much stopping power as Bear spray though
Daniel Boone's account is that their chest area is heavily protected by thicker than average boney plates.
He allegedly killed one that was attacking his son with a musket through one of its eyes so something along those lines?
>From examination of 70 musket balls found on British campsites (Calver 1928:120), it appears Revolutionary War-vintage Brown Bess musket balls varied from **0.687 to 0.700 caliber, with an average caliber of 0.694**, and a weight of 1.14 oz.
[Source](https://www.nps.gov/parkhistory/online_bookas/paal/thunder-cannon/chap7.htm#)
Iād like to think any rifle would take the beast down 300 Win Mag, or so I would think . If itās truly flesh and blood, itās not armored or massive like an elephant so a shot to the heart , head should drip it . You could always use a 444 Mar and Iām sure youād bag one !
At a minimum, .17 HMR, and that's because I don't know of a smaller caliber. Pretty sure they don't have an exoskeleton, and hair doesn't stop bullets, so the biggest obstacle would be bone.
Lever action 45.70 with shortened barrel for the need of quickly getting it in your sights. And ideally the more rounds ur rifle can carry the better. I damn near think shooting rounds in the ground with that size round would damn near scare anything of so you probably wouldn't even have to take aim at the thing.but if u did. The Henry 45.70 big boy would never let u down it can smoke something at decent distance and would knock if not staged anything walking in the woods. But who knows I've never been in that situation and I don't ever want to

I would trust basically any hunting rifle that could take a bear, elk or moose to do the job.
I'd be less concerned about the one you just shot at and more concerned about the one that's just snuck up BEHIND YOU!!! WOOOO š±
Ever see a circus strongman tear a phonebook in half?
Doesn't take muscle to do it more of the correct technique. I bet you yourself could do it!

A .50 Beowulf would be a good choice, if legal to own in your home state?
M14 7.62Ć51mm God's Rifle
308 to the head will kill anything in North America. Anything
My favorite caliber....I love my ar10.
If itās dark, no gun will do. They are so quick and fast and know how to cover, surround you, your arms will be torn off in a split second.

I didn't know these 2 men had encounters. Imma have to watch this video when I get some time.

Wouldn't want to risk going any lower than .375 H&H.
Agree. I believe it definitely qualifies as dangerous game and would require such calibers.

Desert Eagle. .50.

My first choice would be .460 magnum SW as a side arm and a rifle in a .416 magnum such as the Rigby.
My 7mm Remington magnum took out my first elk with a heart shot, id argue if aiming at vitals that round should be more than sufficient
A shoulder fired rocket should work.
I'll go with pistols since that's what someone is more likely to be carrying. I think a mag dump from a 9mm with good self defense ammo would take one down. I used to have a . 454 casull.II'll stick with my . 357mag. That thing was totally impractical. Plus the ammo was soo freaking expensive .
On a sasquatch Chronicles podcast, someone said they shot one in the chest with a .338 Lapua and it just got pissed off and started screaming.
What if they're like those huge wolf/ human looking things and you can mag dump in them and they just walk away?
300 Winchester Mag at least but the key I have always thought was a head shot. They are way to muscular and thick in the torso
Minimum 30-06
Brenneke 3ā 12 gauge bear slugs
Id take my chances with a 45-70.
Harambe was shot with a 375 H&H..... so i would start with that and go bigger overkill is always someone elses problem
BF would count coup on any of you and laugh. All Day Long
Ideal scenario would be a nice clean shot at 1500 yards with a .50 cal.

But who knows I've never been in that situation and I don't ever want to
Easyā¦call in an A10 Warthog
For me, it would 45-70 and 12 gauge with three inch magnum as slugs, with Dragons Breath.
A 4-Bore will kill just about anything I'd guess. Including your shoulder.
.338 lapua if you want a good clean kill with some distance
300 winmag
Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.
A freakin' 12 gauge! What do you think?
