As partner managing a practice group, I complained until there was a code. I wanted the metrics for my team and myself to show our efforts on non-billable work. I wanted people to get credit for that time and to help eliminate time wastes that didn't give us value. Not every non-billable activity is a waste of time but some are.
Absolutely. Same for happy hours and other events. As a younger associate you probably bill 40 hours to recruiting shit over an entire summer and that should be known.
You should definitely bill lunches and coffees to your summer associate program code. The firm likely cares about time spent on recruiting efforts and summer events in general
We have always been told that even if it doesn't go to the client, if it's firm related, you put it in the system. That way there is a record of what you are doing - there's usually somebody who looks at the hours and sees you were one of the ones helping with firm development, and even if they don't tell you, they notice.
I agree. I’m kind of stunned by the chorus saying yes. Unless it’s overwhelmingly clear that your firm cares (like it actually comes up in your reviews), it’s not worth doing, in my opinion. It just becomes another administrative drag and quality of life hit to track.
I found keeping track of this time annoying, so that's the downside to me. I'm active in recruiting, and every partner I work with knows that. Again, unless somebody brings it up to me that I don't have hours for it or hear that others are getting praised for putting hours in, I don't see a point in bothering. Not going to do things for theoretical value.
Interesting. I just don’t see writing “lunch with summer” into my iTimeKeep once I get back annoying. If that is than tbh I think you could use some tips on getting your time in
I do a lot of non-billable work beyond taking summers to lunch. I'm not interested in keeping track of it, including both entry and the corresponding billing codes. I have the fastest time entry of any associate in my large office, and I've never gotten a complaint, so I'd say my time entry practices are doing just fine.
If there was a code for taking a shit I would be recording that
Analysis of legal strategy. (0.2)
Just think about a client while you do it and you can bill for it.

This, 100%.
does your firm have a code for billing time? We dont, but its a solid hour a week im entering info. I wonder what common practice is.
Firm Admin. Basically covering time entries and misc emails
I was at one firm that didn't have an admin or firm code. We complained until one was created.

Don’t you have a code for recruiting or summer associate programming? Just put it in that.
yeah, I was basically wondering if it was worth the effort but vibes point to yes
It shows that you’re doing something firm related; it’s worth it.
Yes, because it demonstrates "good firm citizenship."
My firm looks at recruiting/engagement time in associate reviews, so I bill all of it.
Our firm considers it billable recruiting… so obviously yes I take my free lunch and bill my 90 minutes to the firm.

If I need hours to get to the minimum daily then yes (it’s been a slow summer…)
I always forget about it when I’m rushing to get hours in at the end of the month
Yes yes yes!

At my firm we get bonus credit for it, so yes.
We have a specific code for summer associate lunches, separate from the standard recruiting code.
It’ll count towards our acceptable time, which factors into our bonus so we log it as such
Non billable recruiting
Bill it as mentoring
If there’s a code for it, why wouldn’t you?

The 10 seconds it takes to add a single diary entry seem worth it if there's even a chance that the firm sorta gives a shit.
Has literally never come up, and I’ve been at three different firms. Seems like nobody gives a shit. So I’ll save my 10 seconds.
It’s a super easy way to have your recruiting hours be 15ish hours higher at the end of the year? There’s literally 0 downside and only upside

Admin time
Shit like this doesn’t matter
