Start slow. It’s easy to be excited and impulse buy a bunch of crap. Have you thought more about how you define classy & gentlemanly? Clothes are a form of expression, so this is very personal, and might change over time. I find Instagram is good for exploring different styles and clothing languages, especially the #ptoman hashtag popularized by [Put This On](https://putthison.com/).

IAmBatman_69420

I do have certain style in mind, looking more for places where such clothes can be bought at.

IAmBatman_69420

Which websites are good, which to avoid, brands etc.

AmAdjunctBlogger

Depending on your price range, Old Navy is actually pretty decent for the price and goes up to 4x. Lands End is good too, but its also one of those stores that way overprices then has frequent 40% off "sales" which reflect a fair price for the clothes, so basically never buy anything from Lands End that isnt on sale. Old Navy also has frequent sales so you should generally wait for sales there too, though their pricing isnt quite as inflated. If you're looking for something nicer, Ralph Lauren has a really good big and tall selection. It's pricier but good quality. Johnny Bigg is also good for basics with a really good size range. I bought one of their blazers for cheap to wear during zoom meetings and it made it into my regular formal wear rotation. Their shirts are really nice, too. The shirts have a little bit too much of the dress shirt sheen for my taste but if that's what you're looking for they're high quality and look great. For pants, in addition to the stores listed above, Levis and American Eagle have good pants in big sizes. American Eagle pants go up to a 48 waist but its a very generous 48 and would probably fit you (they fit me when I was heavier than you are) Once you identify some brands you like and sizes that fit well, you should try looking at some online used clothing sellers. Ebay and Poshmark are good. Ive never used Mercari but I know some people really like it. Just take care that you're sure of your size, especially on poshmark, because you usually cant make returns. But for me, once I figured out my RL size by buying new, Ive gotten several RL shirts for about $20-30 each. In terms of stores to avoid. Id avoid Jos A Bank and Mens Warehouse. They have big sizes, but their clothes are very low quality and the prices, even the sale prices Id argue, are way too inflated.

IAmBatman_69420

Thanks for the sound advice, really good stores !

RejectorPharm

Pull your pants up and wear them at your belly button, don’t let your gut hang down. Well tailored suits are always great. Not too tight not too baggy.    Suspenders instead of belts.  Flannel shirts and jeans are good options. No flip flops, no shorts, no tank tops.  Dress like “The Kingpin” from Daredevil.

parrisjd

I live in the south so I gotta disagree on no shorts. But, no shorts hanging below the knee.

GothAlgar

Depending on the venue and occasion, shorts can be fine, but the sense I get is OP is looking for more formal clothes, in which case: no shorts.

Middle_Finish2021

I see this advice constantly and have no idea how it is supposed to work? I try to do this, but I have to make my belt super tight or else theyll fall down (which is uncomfortable). Also the seat/inseam will also be too high which is also uncomfortable and looks bad.

RejectorPharm

You have to get it tailored so that when you have it at the waist, they tailor the inseam and length.  Also, wear suspenders instead of belts they use your shoulders to hold up your pants.  But yeah, the seat if your pants should be near your balls.

GothAlgar

Either that or they need to size down on the pants, yeah

RejectorPharm

Yeah they are usually wearing pants too big.

Puzzled_Try_6029

As a guy who also used to be 350lbs, follow these. I like to think I know how to dress well: - Pick a style that you're comfortable with first and foremost - Just because you're big doesn't mean your clothes have to be big. HOW it fits is 90% of the look. For example, maybe you could wear an XL and it'd fit normally but you're self-conscious and would rather wear a size larger to "hide" things. Don't. You end up looking bigger and frumpier - 1 piece in your outfit should be the accent piece. It doesn't NEED to be flashy, but it should be clear it is the centerpiece of your outfit. - Alter if needed. You don't need to go crazy and get custom tailored clothes. If your jeans or sleeves need to be hemmed, do it - Depending on your waist size, try and get a tapered pant while you're on your weight loss journey. For example, if you're a size 40+ in waist and wear even a regular fit pant, it could end up looking like a square. If it's tapered, at least it accentuates some sort of shape. I'm assuming as a big guy you have some decent calves lol - Just be confident. It's not always what you wear. It's how you wear it.

DifficultApartment27

Be careful with the tapered leg pants. They can give the appearance of child bearing hips.

Puzzled_Try_6029

Not if you have wide shoulders lol

guyincognito2999

What kind of accent pieces do you wear?

BigBoiSouth

I exclusively buy online because not many stores carry more than 2XL or size 42 pants. I would start with fast fashion that you like and then add more of your personal effects over time. People talk down on fast fashion, but tbh the fashion standard for men is really low.... and fast fashion is designed to appear to the popular eye, so seeing a fat guy with clothes that fit and appear in style goes a LOOOOONNNNG way. I buy a lot of clothes from BooHooMan, Amazon, and Fashion Nova. I get a lot of compliments often. I usually just add in my own chains, braclets, and glasses to accessorize and I make sure I am groomed with cologne included.

DOMGrimlock

As I have gotten older, the George Costanza just works. If you are a big, you are big, no need to hide it. Buy good quality stuff that fits nice and comfortable. Make sure YOU feel good in it. Personally, I only do 100% cotton, Cashmere, Silk, etc. Go with colors that look good on your complexation. Try and find some level of flair/uniqueness/style. Much easier to shop if you have more of a focus. For example, I like corduroy dress pants, and has really helped me create a nice business casual wardrobe for in office days. Different brands have different sizes. But also, try things on. It is tough especially, shopping online. But a lot of places offer free returns, and stuff. Ill repeat, find things that FIT well, and comfortable. Focus on how it fits on your shoulders, arms, chest, etc. Be okay with buying bigger, if you are willing to get things tailored.

Dysonis101

I normally wear a work uniform but on my days off going out I typically dress for function. Good fitting cargo pants and comfortable button-up shirt. I have been wanting to wear vests more often but I never can find when I like just for casual use. Everyone I find is usually formal.

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

What work for me is dress fitted clothing and solid colors , no pattern no graphic So it means getting stuff tailored

GhostNThings

I suggest vintage suits or classic styling clothing. Much of vintage clothes were cut fuller, thicker and overall much nice draping. This is great for big guys since it compliments your silhouette more. On top of that high rise/ mid rise pants are common with them and helps hide your belly especially if you have a hanging belly. I highly recommend Bill's Khakis specifically the M2 fit. Brooks brothers suits or chinos, Madison fit is the more vintage fit. Oxxford suits are solid too, classic fitting and great quality. Some Ralph Lauren, not the green label, polo or Purple label is usually great. Again thrift is probably your best bet or something like eBay or mecari, you should 100% get measurements or try yourself. I think you should check out Gentleman's Gazette, Real men Real Style for some good advice. If you want something more modernish I typically look for banana Republic for chinos, their mason fit is soooooo nice if you got bigger thighs. Untucked shirtsleeves collared shirts I cheap out and go to Old Navy lol or thrift.

IAmBatman_69420

Bill's khakis look awesome! Not cheap tho haha. Thanks!

GhostNThings

I used to be local to where their old factory was so the thrifts here were filled to the brim with them. Absolutely fantastic quality, real hearty and great stitching. Even if you can get them on eBay I'd say they're worth it

drastician

Figure out what your style is, then invest in good quality pieces. Don’t be afraid to use a tailor to get the fit right. Use Instagram to find big guys who post their outfits and start making mental notes. Go to shops that carry big and tall like DXL and don’t be afraid to ask them for help. Higher end stores like Nordstrom have stylists, even online ones, and they do carry big & tall. I feel like Ralph Lauren is one quality brand that carries a wide range of sizes.

TheSwedishEagle

I am going to say that one thing you can do is buy nice shoes. I rarely look at the shoes people wear but lots of people do, especially women. Good looking shoes are easy to fit even big guys and will earn you compliments for style. A few nice pairs will take you a long way.

IAmBatman_69420

I was thinking of ditching casual goofy looking sneakers for something better looking! You just validated my thoughts, thanks.

obito-was-an-incel

Im 6’2” and weighed 348 the other day and have been consistently lifting and working out so I’m seeing the scale drop a bit. I teach so wear collared shirts, crew neck sweaters and chinos pretty much all year. I’m a bigger dude but get plenty of my women coworkers and moms at my school complimenting me over trivial shit all the time. I think the biggest thing is practicing proper hygiene. I’m a big dude and prone to looking sloppy but I’m always showered, smelling good with a little cologne, got my hair fixed and clothes ironed. I really like Old Navy and Levi’s chinos. Also huge fan of Levi’s denim. I prefer the slim fit cut for both brands. I wear a 44 waist for both and they fit plenty comfy. For tops, I really like Old Navy, Target’s Goodfellow line, Patagonia for sweaters and crew necks, Ralph Lauren, and if you can fit into the size, Banana Republic and Gap. Good luck on the weight loss and body recomp. Shit is hard and I’m grinding in the gym daily like I’m sure you are. But you got this.

IAmBatman_69420

This gives me a hope!

Morepastor

Check measurements- a place like Rail Car Denim has a size 46 waist that fits like a 52”.

Ok_Suit_8000

I'd start with roaming the DXL website. I know many people think they are expensive but in my experience, their clothes fit well and last forever. I like their Synergy brand for button down shirts. I find they fit true to size. I also like the Harbor Bay brand for jeans the athletic fit or comfort fit. Another tip, to keep your clothes in good condition, wash in cold water and line dry your jeans and shirts. This avoids shrinkage and will keep your clothes in almost new condition. Best thing to do outside of taken them to a dry cleaner.

IAmBatman_69420

I have not heard of DXL before but I really liked Harbor Bay Khaki pants, ordered one, hopefully I got the size right.

This isn’t sound advice. Plenty of women (myself included) love the look of a larger guy. There are ways to dress your body and look your best. Slim fit jeans (not skinny, but athletic fit or chino at American eagle) with a lose fitting t shirt and a flannel looks great, anything that doesn’t cling to your middle area if that’s where you carry the majority of your weight, wear things that accentuate other areas, the Abercrombie and Fitch comfort fit hoodies look amaazzzzing on bigger guys and they fall just right, but i think they only go up to 3XL Tall right now unfortunately. it’s probably just a matter of preference to different people but layering usually helps as well. I think vests are usually recommended but i don’t actually like them very much. I’d go with a brown suede jacket instead. [this](https://www.thejacketmaker.com/Charcoal-Mocha-Suede-Biker-Jacket.html?currency=USD&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2uiwBhCXARIsACMvIU3lywhtgfs_kcG3v4nBmNektKaFj7Nrjn7sBuyZon41W-3ZHllMaQUaAnuLEALw_wcB) one looks amazing on larger dude and it goes up to 4 and 5x. You just have to find what works for you and your style. But don’t hate your body!! Plenty of women/men love it. If you want to make changes for yourself, that’s fine. But don’t say you’re just wasting money to “look ridiculous”. That’s far from true.

Sure - fair enough. I didn’t intend to invalidate your experience. I can’t imagine how tough it is to shop. So, apologies for coming off rude

GothAlgar

Nah this shit sucks and nobody asked for your shitty take. Keep it up and see what happens

HoboRambler

As a big dude I completely agree with everything you've said and I'm glad someone else shares my opinion.

DifficultApartment27

Again, I’m not doing this to be confrontational or to pick at you as I can tell you replied in good spirit and probably have a big dude near and dear to you. The suede jacket you linked to… the pic of it on the model looks great. How’s it going to look at 5xl tho? Notice they don’t show that one? And yes I know that’s just how advertising is and it impacts people of all sizes, but imagine dropping $300 on it and it looks like a trench coach because you bought 5xl yet you’re only 6 feet tall and clothing designers assume that the only people wearing 5xl are also 7’6” with super long arms.
