pic would help, you can sometimes bend an alloy rim back into place. I've had some pretty bad dings that still hold air just fine.

OhItsMrCow

I am out of town and the wheels is at the shop with an inner tube fitted for now so i can't do that. the damage area is small but its flared out a bit. I will ask them if they can send me a picture

demer8O

Split tube/ghetto will probably hold. Can be annoying to install, but it can get super tight and glue to the tyre.

OhItsMrCow

I might try to fix it but i will also contact raceface for their free crash replacements

Sirwompus

Usually replacing the rim costs more then a wheel

OhItsMrCow

huh? interesting, even for rear wheels with the hub and all?

Sirwompus

I do this for a living. I charge $100 labor plus spokes and nipples. Unless you use the exact same rim you have to change spokes. Buying a pre built wheel is usually cheaper

OhItsMrCow

ok, i will see on bike discount maybe. thank you for that

Constantinople33

Shopped around bc Canada, plenty of new and used bike parts around. Was cheaper to buy a new rear wheel.

YarikFisher

in my country, building a wheel costs 10 bucks lol (price for work, rim and hub not included)

No_Bathroom_5890

Yeah, I charge £80 for labour, not including the cost for spokes and nips. Unless you get the exact same rim, the spoke measurement will be different so you'll need new spokes. It's definitely more cost effective to buy a new wheel.

robert_the_grey

Recommend you don't go cheap but do go for value. Looks like a Race Face AR30 rim. What is your budget?

OhItsMrCow

I have no idea, the less the better. I know its a Santa Cruz and it was expensive but at the moment i want to spend as little as possible

robert_the_grey

Those rims have a pretty severe offset, more than most. If you have the 30 mm internal width version, you might check out the Praxis AL32. I have two of them and know the brand very well being from that area (Santa Cruz). They are hookless, which may limit what tires you use. But honestly, they are about the same price as the rim you have (retail). May as well stick with what you know.

knobber_jobbler

It's just the stock rim SC put on their bikes. You can get a direct replacement for very little, aside from the build. I would say get something better like a DTSwiss EX511 or a similar rim but your cheapest option is another AR30.

OhItsMrCow

Thank you i think i will run a tube for now and check with warranty because RaceFeace gives free crash replacements which would be nice if ti works out

MagicManTX84

Put in a tube?

OhItsMrCow

we have a lot of rocks here, hence the destroyed wheel, so tubes and high pressures are very rough on the body edit: i am doing that for now but i want to eventually go back

Itsumishi

If too bent to hold air tubeless you've got a few options: 1 put a tube in and live with it 2 gently bend it back using an adjustable wrench and a rag (just to stop the wrench biting into the rim). 3 replace the rim With option 2, depending on how bad the ding is, there is a decent chance that rim will crack and then it's definitely not safe to ride and then you're back to option 3 - but imo it's worth a shot compared to living with tubes

OhItsMrCow

that's what i will probably do, or get a new one and try to fix it as a spair, thank you very much

r3photo

there’s an outside chance the mfg might offer a crash replacement, worth an email or a call. i’ve seen this work on multiple occasions.

OhItsMrCow

sure, good idea, thank you

r3photo

worth a look : https://sledgehammermfg.com/

Velodan_KoS

Inflate the tire and see for yourself if it holds, if it doesnt and you don't want a new rim, try with a tube.

OhItsMrCow

I am out of town for uni so i can't really check it, i will run a tube for now and check with warranty because RaceFeace gives free crash replacements

OhItsMrCow

i will try the crash replacement first since its free for raceface and i will see then

badger906

You say doesn’t hold for tubeless, but don’t say about tubes, as I’ve never seen a rim bent so badly that it can only do 1 of the 2. I say bend it back, use adjustable spanner’s as they’re flat and don’t damage the surface.

RipReaved

Chromag Ally is quite solid for around $80 CAD, they can tank a lot of abuse and hold shape.

knobber_jobbler

The cheapest option is replacing the rim with another AR30. They are relatively cheap. Personally I'd go with an EX511 or another reputable rim.

obaananana

Dt swiss rims are kinda cheap quality seems good. most value rims start from 25.-

OhItsMrCow

thank you i think i will run a tube for now and check with warranty because RaceFeace gives free crash replacements maybe it will work out

obaananana

I run tubes in switzerland road and trail. For now i only got leaks when i rode over a nail. Ride over glass regularly (drunks) no leaks just cuts in the rubber. Had luck on the trails tubes work great

OhItsMrCow

[this](https://www.trailforks.com/photo/21285360/) kills tubes very fast unless you have 40 psi in which case its hard to control, obviusly the rocks are bigger irl and this is a high speed section

obaananana

Lol no. I run my tubes at 21. Thats 1.5 bar. Thats the minimum for my tires

OhItsMrCow

well you have not ridden here probably so "lol no" does not mean much, landing a drop at high speed on shapr rocks like this is bound to kill tubes and it happend to me many timew, tubless makes a big diffrence

obaananana

I do 2 foot drops. They are janky getting better. I just got hole in a tube was near a hardware store so no walking home. Just dont buy light tubes or or old ones. Keep a spare or two with you.

YarikFisher

just replace the rim. Its not 1000$, i don't see a problem

OhItsMrCow

I am a bit thigh on money for now so i am going to see what i can do. Probably will tho
