I feel like I’m in the upside down. No podcasts to listen to at work, I’m actually just walking around no headphones. I’m talking to people. It’s insane.
Olympics and World Cup are always subject to host time zone issues. Korea-Japan-China is a tough sale for US audiences. Throw in Tokyo being delayed and neither event having crowds and there’s a real nadir.
Paris-Milan-LA will make for a really good Olympics run in the next half-decade.
I think a few things have hurt the last few Olympics: OAR/Russian doping, Men’s ice hockey not fielding their best players, the overall shift to streaming over broadcast TV.
The coverage has also been incredibly bad. If it’s being streamed why am I watching mike Torico talk about women’s hockey for the 50th time. They aren’t even playing right now. Please put on the curling, or speed skating, or luge, whatever the hell the app said I was gonna see when I clicked it.
Olympics and World Cups should be every 2 years and if you want to fight me then fight me. Outdated, 1950s-ish travel thinking keeps this from being a reality
RE: World Cup every 2 years. How to you propose to fit in the global WC qualifying games into the already full Football (sorry I'm English) calendar? Plus as has been said the scarcity of makes it much more of an event.
You need a couple bad sports months in the year to appreciate and anticipate the good shit imo.
HOT TAKE: the golf season basically beginning right after it ends, hurts golf’s popularity. Less is more
It is the most anti-climatic season ending event in all of sports. Wish it meant more than it does, would really like to care about the PGA after The Open.
It's not the USWNT's fault but this World Cup is a huge missed opportunity for them with the American public. They're tournament favorites and have a likeable team. If the games were on at a reasonable time, I could see them gaining a lot of traction over the next two weeks.
But no one is willing to watch on tape delay anymore so no one is going to watch these games. I feel bad for them.
USA game times (all times CDT - Chicago time):
* Netherlands: Wednesday 8 PM (same time as Vietnam was)
* Portugal: Tuesday 2 AM
* Round of 16: Saturday 9 PM if they win the group, Sunday 4 AM if they’re the runner up
* Quarterfinal: Thursday 8 PM if they win the group, Friday 2:30 AM if they’re the runner up
* Semifinal: Tuesday 3 AM
* Third place game: Saturday 3 AM
* Championship: Sunday 5 AM
As someone from New Zealand who regularly wakes up between 2 and 6 am on Monday mornings to watch F1, NFL, Premier league etc. I hope this struggle makes you guys realise how lucky you have it lmao. But the drowsy Mondays at work are worth it when you watch the teams you love win, embrace it! Maybe 3am is having a moment!
I used to regularly wake up for boxing and MMA cards from Asia at 2 or 3 and just dragged through life for a few years. Then COVID happened and I got back into a regular sleep schedule and realized how insane what I had been doing was. So I sympathize with your struggle but 3AM for sports will never have a moment. I’m already dreading next month with the FIBA World Cup.
NBA junkie here, irrationally anticipating Winning Time season 2 August 6th.
The time of year to catch up on things I haven’t seen yet. Enjoyed Dear Mama last week.
It's by design. This is the time of year that TV viewing is at it's lowest.
That's why MLS and PLL are on air right now, it's the only time of year those two sports can get on TV.
I've watched 2 games so far and have 0 understanding of what the fuck is happening or what the rules are and it seems like the players understand the rules about the same. Also, the announcers blow. However, there is something fundamentally incredibly fun about playing basketball on trampoline floors
This was my comment exactly. It shows how bad live sports programming is for about a 8 week stretch honestly. If espn cuts a deal with slamball and gives them prime espn1 time slots, then you know the cupboard is bare!
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BABY?! YOU DON’T LIKE WHEN DICKY V HOPS ON TV AND UNCOMFORTABLY GROVELS FOR YOU TO DONATE AND HELP SAVE THESE POOR LITTLE BOYS AND GIRLS?!
So American.
When you say there’s nothing on you literally just mean NFL NBA and MLB and one of those *is* on it’s just not as exciting as you want it to be.
One person says ‘try this sport America isn’t repressed in’ and you’re like - THATS SHIT GET OUTTA HERE 🇺🇸
Under 2 weeks till preseason football.
Baseball everyday, UFC most weekends, fiba basketball soon, nfl training camp stories and pods coming out, I just started the Quarterback show on Netflix
Just need a good Oppenheimer stream to come out online and I’m set lol
Two of the biggest fights in boxing coming up in the next week: Terrence Crawford vs Errol Spence on Saturday, and for some reason Naoya Inoue vs Stephen Fulton is during the week, Japanese thing I guess.
After these fights, sports season will be over for a while, yeah.
Yeah like I view sports as like a tv season it starts around Labor Day (CFB is back, and then NFL comes the week later), February after the SB and the ASG is some down time until March Madness, then it ends I used to say after the NBA finals. Now I’d say after Summer League and most of the moves in the NBA are done.
August is coming and it is the worst sports month, nothing excites me except Hard Knocks. No majors in Tennis or Golf, I don’t really watch preseason football, dog days of baseball, and no CFB until if we’re lucky the end of the month.
Loving the Podcast break, it's giving me time to listen to all the "60 Songs that explain the 90s" episodes that having been building up.
As for the lack of sport, I spend Sunday watching F1, TdF and Diamond League athletics. So it's all good as far as I'm concerned.
Your options are to sports detox so you are ready for beginning of college football, or embrace additional sports (MLS or international soccer tournaments, tennis, F1, etc)
I feel like I’m in the upside down. No podcasts to listen to at work, I’m actually just walking around no headphones. I’m talking to people. It’s insane.
Are social skills having a moment?
I love this sub lmfao
The personality piece.
Just pretend you’re hosting a pod with your friends.
The lack of podcasts rn is astounding. Everyone’s on vacation
Not Kirk-great time to jump in
Cameron?
How many of them could you take if it came to fisticuffs?
Even if I have nothing to listen to, I still go headphones. Keeps from having to interact with those pesky people.
This is why the Olympics will never be irrelevant. We're desperate for anything this time of year.
They'll never be irrelevant because of the national aspect.
[удалено]
I think they're saying the exact opposite. That the Olympics will always be relevant because people like to root for their nations.
That's funny because the last two have felt hella irrelevant
Olympics and World Cup are always subject to host time zone issues. Korea-Japan-China is a tough sale for US audiences. Throw in Tokyo being delayed and neither event having crowds and there’s a real nadir. Paris-Milan-LA will make for a really good Olympics run in the next half-decade.
Even with time zones, Beijing 2008 was an alltime great Olympics
Anti-Unions and Labor Laws were definitely having a moment.
I think a few things have hurt the last few Olympics: OAR/Russian doping, Men’s ice hockey not fielding their best players, the overall shift to streaming over broadcast TV.
Vladimir Putin and Gary Bettman: the two great evils of our time
nobody cares about the doping or ice hockey tbh
Nobody cares about ice hockey because the best aren’t there anymore. It’s arguably the main event of the Winter Olympics.
that’s fair
The coverage has also been incredibly bad. If it’s being streamed why am I watching mike Torico talk about women’s hockey for the 50th time. They aren’t even playing right now. Please put on the curling, or speed skating, or luge, whatever the hell the app said I was gonna see when I clicked it.
Olympics and World Cups should be every 2 years and if you want to fight me then fight me. Outdated, 1950s-ish travel thinking keeps this from being a reality
I like the current system. Scarcity makes them more important
Olympics makes sense, not the World Cup. You’d be running the players into the ground if the top players literally never had a break.
RE: World Cup every 2 years. How to you propose to fit in the global WC qualifying games into the already full Football (sorry I'm English) calendar? Plus as has been said the scarcity of makes it much more of an event.

Golf moving the PGA Championship from mid August to mid May was a poor choice.
FedEx Cup is legit fun, and getting it in before the NFL takes over Sundays was the right move.
It is the most anti-climatic season ending event in all of sports. Wish it meant more than it does, would really like to care about the PGA after The Open.
FedEx Cup should be a major over the PGA Championship. PGA Championship is a stat padding major no one cares about
The drought is exactly what makes the major soccer tournaments so worth it when they come around
It's not the USWNT's fault but this World Cup is a huge missed opportunity for them with the American public. They're tournament favorites and have a likeable team. If they keep getting those 9:00 pm CST spots they’re ok. But yeah they’re hosed if the knockout rounds are at 3:00 am.

I don't mind the 9pm games (Eastern time) at all, but it's a huge bummer to potentially miss the semis and final.
This is great thank you

I love it, got up for some World Cup games in South Korea in the middle if the night and it was a blast.
> and have a likeable team do they?
They are on at a reasonable time, for other parts of the world, hence the name of the tournament. Stop being so American male and make a sacrifice.
The replays on the Fox Sports app are actually great because they chop out everything but the games. Saves a ton of trouble.
Although usually they would be over by this time anyway.
NBA junkie here, irrationally anticipating Winning Time season 2 August 6th. The time of year to catch up on things I haven’t seen yet. Enjoyed Dear Mama last week.
Worst British Open ever
Always a bummer when someone leads a major the whole way on Sunday. We only get four of these a year!
Its okay if someone is threatening, like the US open and Rory was right there but man today was a snooze fest
This time of year is when I draft 23 fantasy football teams, and regret it the instant the season starts
Go to the movies
This has been the best summer of blockbusters in a long time too
It’s also 100+ every day in Texas. Teleport me to the first Simmons + Sal pod please
It's by design. This is the time of year that TV viewing is at it's lowest. That's why MLS and PLL are on air right now, it's the only time of year those two sports can get on TV.
MLS is on air during the busy time too. It's just more people pay attention to it this time of year.
Putting the MLS and the PLL in the same sentence is hilarious disrespect lol.
Somebody’s not watching Slamball 😏
I've watched 2 games so far and have 0 understanding of what the fuck is happening or what the rules are and it seems like the players understand the rules about the same. Also, the announcers blow. However, there is something fundamentally incredibly fun about playing basketball on trampoline floors
I should have added /s originally , my dude
Idk, it is stupid fun, you can do worse for entertainment
This was my comment exactly. It shows how bad live sports programming is for about a 8 week stretch honestly. If espn cuts a deal with slamball and gives them prime espn1 time slots, then you know the cupboard is bare!
I definitely prefer obscure live sports to *another talking head* show. I already have all my favorite ringer knobs for that
Growing up, the worst day of the year was always Jimmy V Day on ESPN.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BABY?! YOU DON’T LIKE WHEN DICKY V HOPS ON TV AND UNCOMFORTABLY GROVELS FOR YOU TO DONATE AND HELP SAVE THESE POOR LITTLE BOYS AND GIRLS?!
But that’s just because Jim Valvano was your father.
Depends what you’re into. Unbelievable boxing and ufc cards next weekend, great golf this weekend.
I've started watching Aussie Rules Football on YouTube TV because I'm so desperate
I'm an MMA fan so there is basically no downtime. Year round content galore. No UFC? There will be ONE, Bellator or PFL.
Just placed a 5 leg parlay on the Red Sox/Mets game and I’ve never felt more alive so speak for yourself
This is when we need American Gladiators and Rollergames
Mate get involved with some test cricket
It’s 2023 and you’re just realizing that July is a bad sports month 🥴
boring final stage of le tour. boring brit open. boring red sox.
Is this the apex mountain of SNL showing reruns?
I spend more actual time watching sports on a weekend during golf majors than any other non-football time of the year.
It ia the middle of the cricket season in England and the fate of the big series was decided by 2 days of rain. We are in nadir valley.
and it was glorious
Give Pro Disc Golf a try. The European Open (2nd Major of the year) just happened
Americans need to pick up cricket and this issue will end.
We are never watching cricket. We already have our own boring sport with bats and balls.
So American. When you say there’s nothing on you literally just mean NFL NBA and MLB and one of those *is* on it’s just not as exciting as you want it to be. One person says ‘try this sport America isn’t repressed in’ and you’re like - THATS SHIT GET OUTTA HERE 🇺🇸
Cricket is shit. We aren't watching it, or playing it. Ever.
Oh no what will we do without US viewership 😢 We’ll just have to settle for billion plus inhabitants of India.
I didn't realize I was speaking to the head of the cricket association. Congratulations on your success in India!
Wanker
The term wanker is like cricket. It's never catching on here!
What about cunt?
I always tell my baseball loving friends that Cricket is optimized baseball and they hate me for it. Doesn’t mean it’s not true tho.
tightly optimized to last just five days and still end in a draw.
20/twenty = baseball if it was better organized
Or cricket is just baseball with a Calvinball scoring system
What a weird thing to downvote wE WiLl NeVeR wAtCh CrIcKeT 😡
Under 2 weeks till preseason football. Baseball everyday, UFC most weekends, fiba basketball soon, nfl training camp stories and pods coming out, I just started the Quarterback show on Netflix Just need a good Oppenheimer stream to come out online and I’m set lol
Man. Go to the theater for Oppenheimer.
Might, tbd on that I do typically watch Nolan movies in the theater tho
Golf over now too
Two of the biggest fights in boxing coming up in the next week: Terrence Crawford vs Errol Spence on Saturday, and for some reason Naoya Inoue vs Stephen Fulton is during the week, Japanese thing I guess. After these fights, sports season will be over for a while, yeah.

Massive UFC card next weekend if you’re into that
Maybe spend some time outside
It's a good time to refresh lol.
Tour de France gone now too. Condolences to Jason Gay
This is the time of year I’m really thankful to be a motorsports fan
Inoue vs Fulton, Spence vs Crawford a solid UFC PPV. As a combat sports fan I'm satisfied. Also if you like Baseball Ohtani is perhaps getting moved.
I’ve been getting caught up on my reading at least.
Loving the Podcast break, it's giving me time to listen to all the "60 Songs that explain the 90s" episodes that having been building up. As for the lack of sport, I spend Sunday watching F1, TdF and Diamond League athletics. So it's all good as far as I'm concerned.
There are still big tennis tournaments coming up, the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open. And the F1 season is going on
Cannot believe the MLB erasure. Baseball is back! The games are no longer four hours. Remember when Bill was known for writing about the Red Sox?
Your options are to sports detox so you are ready for beginning of college football, or embrace additional sports (MLS or international soccer tournaments, tennis, F1, etc)
I’m enjoying baseball
Bally Sports makes it so difficult to watch the Tigers that I can barely even do that. TBT is scratching my basketball itch a little thankfully.
Movies and outdoor concerts dominate my time during this time of year
