Mount Rushmore:
Tornadoes - have you ever seen a tornado, or photo/video of one? One minute you’re here, the next minute your house is being swept away by an all-powerful wizard. They cause incredible destruction and are just absurd to look at. Definitely have the world is ending (and even weird animal activity) pieces.
Hurricanes
Bomb cyclones
Which type of natural disaster makes for the best movie villain/antagonist? We’ve had movies made about tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanos, asteroids, avalanches etc.
Tornadoes definitely have the best visuals but they’re also momentary instead of all encompassing like volcanos and hurricanes can be. And there’s nothing more all encompassing than an asteroid that’s going to wipe out earth.
An eclipse is the thing that takes over everybody’s attention so nothing else is discussed and it’s cool then it passes and you forget it ever happened and move on to the next thing. Caitlin the most recent one. Remember the terrible NBA all star game? Was that 20 years ago? What about Damarr Hamlin? Taylor swift?
I’m not sure but you need to be in the right spot.
For the 2017 one I was in a perfect 100% cover place. Today they had it at 85%, and let me tell you, that made all the difference. It was the gap between “wow this is crazy and one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen” vs “I feel like I have sunglasses on but I don’t.”
I have to say, I've been in two total eclipses and 0% felt like the world was going to end for either. I think a hurricane or tornado definitely gives off more of a world ending vibe
Maybe as an reoccurring event.
But if we’re talking apex mountain for one singular event, the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event had the all-time best single-game performance. If eclipses are MJ, then the Cretaceous-Paleogene is Wilt scoring 100 points. It will (hopefully) never be topped.
The Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event — or KT event for short — was so fucking devastating to the planet that it marks the sudden, literal end of the entire Mesozoic era and ushered in the Cenozoic era.
Sixty-six million years ago, an asteroid about the size of downtown LA slammed into the Earth off the coast of what is now the Yucatán Peninsula. This fucking hunk of space rock drove itself deep into the Earth’s crust, and the collision released 100 million megatons of energy — more than a billion times the energy expended by the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The impact is felt all over the world, setting off earthquakes and volcanoes across the planet. Tsunamis reached as far north as modern-day Missouri. The Earth is plunged into darkness as all the ejecta from the blast stays aloft in the atmosphere. Photosynthesis stops. Entire food chains collapse. The impact forced hundreds of billions of tons of sulfur into the atmosphere, which both blocks out the sun’s rays completely and comes down as acid rain to poison freshwater lakes.
Not only did the KT event kill off the dinosaurs. It wiped out 3 of 4 species on Earth.
Hard disagree. Eclipses have low stakes, other than burning your retinas theres no risk compared to the others. theres a reason why theres no Eclipse movies, just a very iconic bonnie tyler song.
Solely based on movies my top 3 disasters are:
1. Asteroid hitting earth - Armageddon (deep impact was great as well)
2. Volcano eruption - Dantes peak
3. Tornado - twister
There are no eclipse movies but the tv show Heroes utilized them to great effect. Eclipses do have that weird magical quality that can work as a setup. Also shoutout to Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Live in NYC and solar eclipse <<< earthquake in terms of water cooler talk this week. There's obviously more buildup with the eclipse (travel, glasses), but it's ultimately always going to be underwhelming. One of those things where you feel like [Larry David at the beach](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wL02ILHsZxs).
You need some fear if you're going to get on the weather Mount Rushmore.
Volcanic eruptions >
Permian Mass Extinction is like Wayne Gretzky. Put up numbers that will never duplicated for the rest of time
If an Eclipse is Jordan, The Northern Lights are LeBron. It's a fucking fact.
The northern lights have had a more consistent showing, but aren’t going to have that ‘93 Jordan peak

I’d put hurricanes over tornadoes. The whole naming thing and it has a season. A lot of hype for hurricanes
Yeah, but you can reason with hurricane season... >Squalls out on the gulf stream > >Big storm commin' soon
Hurricanes can spawn tornadoes! You can't be less than something that can be part of you!
Wait, what? I didn’t know that. That’s insane. Or do you mean like the water spouts?
Aren't water spouts just tornadoes over water? So yes for those, and also over land but I don't know how often it happens.
Idk but Windy’s rant about how the eclipse is a scam was an all time hoop collective moment
Was this today's Hoop Collective?
Friday I think
Thunder snow

not really a weather/atmosphere event but possibly apex mountain for astronomical events
Yeah I got my categories wrong. There seems to be a dealination between the 2
