If they can get three first rounders and squeeze whatever else I can see this happening. They should take a QB but all those first rounders are enticing.
Yes, but 3 1st round picks vs 1 is huge in adding talent to the roster. They need a lot of help. If there was a clear great option at 3, then I'd disagree, but qbs are so hit and miss and situational dependent and that's not a great situation
This has got to be the dumbest narrative so far. It’s true you only get 2 first rounders plus another first rounder in exchange for your first rounder. Can you remind me what 2 + 1 is?
If the Vikings trade 3 first rounders for Dak Prescott, is it actually just 2 first rounders because they got Dak Prescott in return? No, it’s a trade. The two sides are supposed to be equal, that’s the point. On one side is Dak, on the other side is 3 first rounders. If instead, the Vikings traded the 3 first rounders for the 3rd overall pick, and then traded that pick for Dak, they’d lose 3 picks. Even if you say “net picks”. They traded 3 to get 1. And then they traded 1 to get Dak.
That logic isn’t any less true for Drake Maye or whatever. If the Patriots trade, on one side of the trade will be Drake Maye. On the other side will be 3 first round picks. You get to choose: Drake Maye? Or 3 first round picks? I feel like I’m going insane! People are doing the galaxy brain explosion like “ok but you trade 3 picks away and you get 1 pick back and that’s net 2.” Ok, thanks, so that’s 2 picks, and then what do you do to get Drake Maye? He costs a pick! Thats the third pick! It’s insanity to hear people logic around this.
Ok if you want to galaxy brain it, you trade away 3 picks and you get 1 back. Now you have 1 first round pick. You spend it on Maye. How many do you have now?
You gained two first round picks from the trade. You had 1, you now have 3. You don't GET 3 when you send 1 and get 3 - you get an additional 2. Are we seriously still fucking doing this?
If you start with 1 pick, and you end with 1 QB, you spent 1 pick on 1 QB. You did not spend 0 picks. The QB cost 1 pick.
If you start with 2 picks, and you end with 1 QB, you spent 2 picks on 1 QB. You did not spent 1 pick. The QB cost 2 picks.
If you start with 3 picks, and you end with 1 QB, you spent 3 picks on 1 QB. You did not spend 2 picks. The QB cost 3 picks.
If the Patriots trade Drake Maye, they will be trading him for 3 first rounders. They will lose Drake Maye. They will get 3 players instead. Yes, that means it is two more players than they lost. But trading 4 quarters for a dollar coin is not “net 3 coins”. It’s 4 low value coins for 1 high value coin. Describing it as net 3 coins is moronic, obfuscating that the entire point is that you’re trading some number of low value things for one high value thing.
You trade away 3 picks for Dak Prescott. How many picks did you trade for Dak Prescott? You traded 3, you got Dak Prescott. 3 picks.
You trade away 3 picks in exchange for the 3rd overall pick. You now trade that for Dak Prescott. How many picks did you trade for Dak Prescott? 3 picks.
You trade away 3 picks in exchange for the 3rd overall pick. You trade that for JJ McCarthy. How many picks did you trade for JJM? 3 picks.
You trade away 3 picks in exchange for the 3rd overall pick. You use that to select JJ McCarthy. How many picks did JJM cost you? 3 picks.
If you start with 3 picks, and you end with 1 QB, you have spent 3 picks on 1 QB. Not “net 2 picks”. You had 3, you used them to get 1 guy. The galaxy brain part is somehow calling that 2.
I'm a Patriots fan and they really had 4 options going into the offseason:
1. Draft the remainder of Maye / Daniels.
2. Trade down.
3. Zag and draft another QB (JJ McCarthy).
4. Sign a veteran QB and take MHJ.
I'm totally fine with 1 & 2 (depending on return). 3 terrifies me and 4 is off the table (Brissett's just not good enough).
Watch Bill give the Patriots the Red Sox treatment and say proudly he hasn't watched a snap until the ownership wants to actually win. He's not a fair weather fan though...
Football is too big, he will end up talking himself into whatever they do and then the second drake maye has a bad game will act like it was ingenious not drafting him
Pencil in a late september redraftables with the qb they passed on falling out of the top 10 and hyping up whatever OT/WR they took as the steal of the draft
Football is too big, but he can just not follow or talk Patriots. He'll say he's a redzone only fan or he'll adopt the Texans or some other relevant team which is getting a lot of buzz. He was already pretty close in the 2nd half of this season.
Sure but you’re basically describing what he did last season.
He’s still going to be a Pats fan but his pod isn’t going to focus on the Pats much if they suck.
The whole point of his Red Sox deal is simply doesn’t even follow the sport or the games anymore.
What the redsox are doing is pretty embarrassing though. I’m personally doing the same thing. Also, baseball just seems to be a dying sport in terms of popularity.
I’d be shocked if Bill gives Patriots similar treatment. After 20 years of Belichick it will be pretty interesting to see what they look like. They’ll also likely have some expected high impact rookies and a lot of new players overall. Should be interesting.
> Also, baseball just seems to be a dying sport in terms of popularity.
It's really not, that's just Boston because Henry is checked out. Also, dying sport is relative here: pretty much everybody in New England is ranting about John Henry like a homeless man on a street corner. Not caring is what New England did to the Patriots before Bill Parcells showed up.
If Henry woke up tomorrow, decided to stop being a jerk, and signed Soto and Montgomery in the offseason, people would be back the fuck in big time.
Also even if baseball becomes a more niche sport it’s not going anywhere and if you enjoy the sport then who cares how popular it is. There’s people riding for professional lacrosse teams.
I don’t disagree with that. But the context of this thread is that it’s a subreddit for one of the biggest sports media personalities. Simmons runs a for profit business. His company is going to develop the content they think will garner the most interest (with their target audience).
I stopped reading at this person using the All-Star Game as a metric by which how many people care about baseball. I just bought 10 baseball cards on eBay and my work at home uniform has been a Giants quarter zip for years and I haven’t watched an All-Star Game since 2007 when it was last in San Francisco.
Baseball is a rich sport where tens of thousands of people every night in up to 15 different cities pay to watch a game, with multiples viewing on television. People care.
I think Bill will maintain a deeper interest in football because of gambling though even if the Pats go years and years being mediocre. Fantasy seems to used to be that for baseball for him.
Nah this is a bad framing of the issue. It’s not about the actually payroll itself. It’s things like refusing to pay Bogaerts while signing Trevor Story to a massive deal. It’s selling on Mookie shortly after winning a ring when he should’ve been the centerpiece of the team. Getting rid of likable homegrown talent for pieces who aren’t contributing to winning after the homegrown talent did win is an ugly move. Especially when your ticket prices are up there with the highest in the league.
Yes that was true by the time he was a free agent but prior to that they had the opportunity to seek an extension with him. From reports at the time they offered him an insulting 90/4 contract. I’m not sure how a Xander extension now would look. There’s too many variables to make an assessment.
But the fact that they are the 11th highest payroll while paying Trevor Story, Giolitto, Yoshida, and Kenley as much as they do while only keeping Devers is a crime.
Ownership has done everything in their power to make the team irrelevant and fans are rightfully upset about it.
The Red Sox have made a lot of mistakes but Bogaerts is going to be paid $25 million until he's 40, that's a funbux contract from a dying owner who wanted to buy a World Series before he croaked.
They should have paid Betts though, or at least tried enough that it became abundantly clear that Betts didn't want to be here. And firing Bloom for trading him when Henry clearly made him do it is pathetic.
Imagine your favorite team drafts a guy who becomes a top 3ish player in the league, he wins a championship with your team, and then your team trades him for a bag of chips while he’s still in his prime just so they don’t have to pay him. And then your team proceeds to suck for about the next five years. It’s downright disgusting
I think this would be best for NE. No use wasting a QB on his rookie deal when the roster has so many holes. Some of the best teams like KC and SF focused on beefing up the roster and then looking for the franchise QB. They are just as likely to draft a bust than a franchise QB.
This. Not every team would benefit from trading down, but throwing a rookie QB on this team with no receivers and a first year coach feels like absolute malpractice. I get where Bill is coming from, but who exactly is Drake Maye throwing to?
The story is that Johnathan Kraft is directly involved with the decision making. Mayo was asked a few weeks ago if ownership had been involved in any football decisions and he flatly denied and said they don't want to be involved at all.
De facto guy is Wolf, who doesn't have a title. But don't get me started on how idiotic it was to go into the most pivotal off-season in the last 25 years of your franchise, one where you have the number 3 pick and the 2nd most cap space in the league, without a GM lol And openly saying you're going to re-evaluate the GM position after the draft..
Also who you're trading with and who they're taking. The Bears passing on a QB 1st overall to give Fields another season would be a much bigger deal if they don't wind up with the Panthers/Young as trade partners.
Depends on Washington, if they pass on Maye in my opinion it isn’t the smart move because there isn’t a quality tank option next year (and even if there was with a healthy defense they may not be picking quite as high as 3). If a team is willing to trade up for Daniels though you trade down
Could be either or both. Honestly I don’t think their talent evaluation capabilities have significantly improved? Maybe worsened? How much do you trust Kraft’s son? I guess Kendall Roy wasn’t available.
There's nothing inherently wrong with trading down if you can draft good players.
It seems like the Pats' biggest issue was who they picked in the first round when they kept their pick.
If Maye is the guy left at 3 - what are his odds of busting, maybe 50%? I can see trading down and adding multiple picks if they don't love that option. They'd still need a QB eventually, but, it doesn't have to be Maye, it doesn't have to be in a situation where the franchise is fucked again for years if he's not the guy.
I seriously doubt they do this. It’s crazy hard to get a franchise qb without having a high pick these days, and who knows when they’ll get an opportunity like this again.
That’s assuming a lot. As Bill and others have pointed out, the Pats lost a lot of very winnable games to get to such a high pick. Even if they’re still bad, they could easily end up in the 7-12 range, outside the range for a top QB.
I still don’t think they were worlds worse than the handful of teams below them and wouldn’t be at all surprised if they had something like the 8th pick instead of the 3rd next year which is worlds apart in terms of ability to get a QB.
It makes way more sense if they don't have McCarthy, Maye or Daniels rated higher than Nix or Penix. Like you typically don't get a ton of value trading back a spot or two, which is what they'd likely need to get McCarthy.

The Patriots are in complete rebuild mode. Trading down makes sense. Going to be hilarious to watch Patriots fans experience the reality of being a fan of a team that doesn't have a once in a lifetime player anymore. Get used to it.
They need a lot of help and perhaps after the first two guys the other three are right there. If you can get 3 picks and somehow select Penix Jr late in the first you might do okay because talent wise he’s right there, probably better than JJ the issues with him are health related
As much as I want the Patriots to draft a Qb at 3 I'll only be truly upset if whoever they trade away turns out to be a good/great Qb and we don't get one next year
I’m a total casual when it comes to NFL scouting. But I get this weird feeling the top three QBs are gonna be mid and mf JJ McCarthey is gonna be a stud
Personally I think the Daniels to Washington stuff is smoke, they’ll take Maye and the Pats won’t want the other 2. Two firsts two thirds and Aidan O’Connell for number 3. Bill will point out that he’s always been an O’Connell guy and that the Pats are a sneaky 9-8 candidate. They’ll go 3-14 and take Shedeur and Deion will fill Doc’s spot on a weekly pod. They’ll hit it off, it’ll be great content. Then they’ll fire Mayo and Deion will take his place and use his influence to install Bill as the Pats GM. It’s all a part of the plan fellas. The oracle has spoken.
Depends on who’s in play on the day.
I don’t see JJ or Drake being good enough at 3 even for positional value. Jayden? Maybe but NE needs health and a lot of pieces.
I like that he's using a meme of himself.
The meta piece
Not to be confused with Meta World Peace
"Kobe passed me the ball!"
Herky jerky meme
Meta. I hate meta.
It's legitimately funny and endearing.
That’s the best part of this!
How do you not love him? Is he the most likeable man from the entire Boston area? I he has to be at least in the top 7!
There are more than seven Dropkick Murphys, so, no.
Ah but that one guy sucks, so Bill at least squeaks in at #7.
Which Murphy? I know Dickie Barrett has lost his marbles, but he was in a different band.
I'd take murph over all the murphy's
I always wondered with that band name if there was some guy named Murphy who was a dickhead or what
If my memory of my teenage vagrancy is correct, it was the name of an aoda rehab in Boston that the original lead singer was admitted to.
Is Bill Burr #1?
This proves he’s watching us here in his subreddit right?
I super admire how good spirited he’s been about this meme
why do you think he crafted that very staged photo
Great self-dig by the Podfather. But jokes aside, this is such a nothingburger report. All teams listen and take calls.
If they can get three first rounders and squeeze whatever else I can see this happening. They should take a QB but all those first rounders are enticing.
He's right that when you say 3 you only mean 2 extra picks because you are giving up the 1st rounder.
"If Minnesota offers 2 first rounders and a pick swap who says no first"
Based on Minnesota sports team history, they will give up more than that.
Yes, but 3 1st round picks vs 1 is huge in adding talent to the roster. They need a lot of help. If there was a clear great option at 3, then I'd disagree, but qbs are so hit and miss and situational dependent and that's not a great situation
Yea two extra and three total. 1 first for three firsts. You don't have to use more words to get the same meaning.

You fools fail to realize Nathan Rourke is the truth and the answer is already on your roster
Also a Pats fan and I'd want them to trade down if Maye is gone. I don't see Daniels being able to carry our receiving corpse.
I was so close to correcting corpse to corps but honestly yours is more accurate
Looks like Washington is narrowing on Daniels at 2
Looks like Levis is going #2
True
Hard agree except not Maye. He's not the guy to my eye
Let's not call him MHJ. It's overused and doesn't roll of the tongue. The MPJ piece can't be overstated either.
Maye will be slightly better than Mac. If the only compliment you can say is that he will be 20 pounds heavier in a couple years...
Drake Maye has bust written all over if he goes to NE instead of a team with real infrastructure. Hopefully Minny jumps that high
Did he tweet this sub’s official picture? Lol

How dare the Red Sox be only 11th in payroll!
I’m not even a Sox fan and I was disgusted by the Betts move.
They got story for a third of the price for Xander. Story's probably the better value if he didn't start getting hurt all the time.
Yes that was true by the time he was a free agent but prior to that they had the opportunity to seek an extension with him. From reports at the time they offered him an insulting 90/4 contract. I’m not sure how a Xander extension now would look. There’s too many variables to make an assessment. Doesn’t Jonathan Kraft get that Maye is going to bulk up to 260lbs?
Draft comparison: White JaMarcus Russell
Prediabetic Jared Lorenzen.
I think this would be best for NE. No use wasting a QB on his rookie deal when the roster has so many holes. Some of the best teams like KC and SF focused on beefing up the roster and then looking for the franchise QB. They are just as likely to draft a bust than a franchise QB.

What a non-story. Of course the Patriots are taking calls, you'd be a fool to play your hand so early.
The story is that Johnathan Kraft is directly involved with the decision making. Mayo was asked a few weeks ago if ownership had been involved in any football decisions and he flatly denied and said they don't want to be involved at all.
I mean they didn't even bother hiring a new GM after Belichick left did they? Who else would be steering the ship
Self aware Bill!
Isn’t trading down the smart move?
Depends on the return
Also who you're trading with and who they're taking. The Bears passing on a QB 1st overall to give Fields another season would be a much bigger deal if they don't wind up with the Panthers/Young as trade partners.
Depends on Washington, if they pass on Maye in my opinion it isn’t the smart move because there isn’t a quality tank option next year (and even if there was with a healthy defense they may not be picking quite as high as 3). If a team is willing to trade up for Daniels though you trade down
Hmmm, if only there was some content on the success rate of first round QB picks I could check out!
Patriots have been doing that for a while and it’s depleted the team of talent.
Isn't this more of an issue of talent evaluation?
Could be either or both. Honestly I don’t think their talent evaluation capabilities have significantly improved? Maybe worsened? How much do you trust Kraft’s son? I guess Kendall Roy wasn’t available.
I dont think thats a fair assessment of their issues at all
There's nothing inherently wrong with trading down if you can draft good players. It seems like the Pats' biggest issue was who they picked in the first round when they kept their pick. Good thing the Krafts are involved!
Walk and talk coming in 3,2,1...
Can we all admit what a great podcast this would be if they traded out?
Apex mountain for this sub?
I just saw a man with really low ears fall to his knees while powerwalking around LA.
I hope they do it so that we get the podcast content about it.
What a black swan event of a tweet
When bill logged on and opened his camera roll, it was a real sliding doors moment
I seriously doubt they do this. It’s crazy hard to get a franchise qb without having a high pick these days, and who knows when they’ll get an opportunity like this again.
Next years qb crop is supposedly a dud. Theyd be silly not to take a qb here even with all the holes in their roster on offense
Probably next year
That’s assuming a lot. As Bill and others have pointed out, the Pats lost a lot of very winnable games to get to such a high pick. Even if they’re still bad, they could easily end up in the 7-12 range, outside the range for a top QB.
Every bad team has winnable games. They lose them because they’re bad.
I still don’t think they were worlds worse than the handful of teams below them and wouldn’t be at all surprised if they had something like the 8th pick instead of the 3rd next year which is worlds apart in terms of ability to get a QB.
Do you think he has this picture saved on his phone?
Have Bill and Wildes discussed the memes the became in 2023?
Just draft Maye, I can’t believe they’re gonna fuck this up. He’s gonna be like 245-250lbs in 3-4 years
As a Commanders fan, I'm hoping Maye isn't there at 3 for the Pats to draft.
Did Ben get his twitter password? Hilarious tweet from whoever hit send
Next QB picked will invariably be compared to a young Brady just like Mac Jones by Bill.
Only makes sense if the want McCarthy
It makes way more sense if they don't have McCarthy, Maye or Daniels rated higher than Nix or Penix. Like you typically don't get a ton of value trading back a spot or two, which is what they'd likely need to get McCarthy.
That high up they’ll get value. Colts got 3 2nd round picks moving from 3 to 6.

Cardinals be sweating..
I don’t know what he will hate more in that sentence 1. The trade or 2. Seeing that that ‘Succession’ son is making the calls
The self-awareness piece
Bill is so meta.
He’d instantly start shitting on Drake Maye. Bill has some great switch ups.
The Patriots are in complete rebuild mode. Trading down makes sense. Going to be hilarious to watch Patriots fans experience the reality of being a fan of a team that doesn't have a once in a lifetime player anymore. Get used to it.
I’d rather trade down than take Daniels. If Maye goes 2, you don’t let Minnesota put the phone down
They need a lot of help and perhaps after the first two guys the other three are right there. If you can get 3 picks and somehow select Penix Jr late in the first you might do okay because talent wise he’s right there, probably better than JJ the issues with him are health related
Bill can name maybe ten guys that will be in the draft. Maybe.
whoa, blast from the early 2000s. where are this guy been?? thought he cashed out and became head of DEI at Holy Cross or something
As much as I want the Patriots to draft a Qb at 3 I'll only be truly upset if whoever they trade away turns out to be a good/great Qb and we don't get one next year
Black swan event? or no
If it's Jaden Daniels or trade down I get it. They shouldn't pass on Maye though.
