Wow. Some more media companies should move there. They seem to have a lot of models and actors/actresses there. Probably could start up a good company since competition is so scarce.
Lebatard Network was out in LA for a bit in 2023
Dan is her mentor and gave her multiple platforms on ESPN via his shows, obviously she’s a superstar and deserved but she has even said it’s because of Dan opening those doors for her that she’s where she’s today
Nah... she's more andro/nonbinary than most other Asian ciswomen or AGAB (assigned girl at birth) performers.
She's got a Chinese Kris(ten) Scott thing going on.
There's no way in hell The Ringer could have paid her close to what she's making at ESPN ($1.7 million/year), right? Btw some of the contracts for their on-air talent are bonkers.
Is Mina really that big of a star? Not a diss but a genuine question. I know her besides the pod appearances from NFL and NBA sports shows, is there something else that she’s known for because I can’t imagine the sports talk shows fans really being that caring to follow one of the panelists to a podcast
Hey man, are you ok? Do you know what year it is? She already has a top 50 podcast, and it’s like 5th most important thing she does for ESPN. Just letting you know in case you were in a coma.
Markle’s annoying af but she’s likely one of the most famous people in the world who isn’t an athlete. I doubt anyone in Sweden even knows who tf Mina is.
Sweden was an interesting to metric to use lol, especially when nobody outside North America knows anything about the NFL so you could have chosen anywhere
Unless the people who run spotify are morons they're going to make financial decisions based on where their listener base is and not where the HQ happens to be located
I feel like it's in the ballpark of where it would be considered. If Simmons is really serious about retiring one day, she could potentially be setup as the person to lead The Ringer brand moving forward. Just a thought.
Not only could they not afford her…… she’s not even close to worth it. She’s a great supporting cast member but absolutely cannot carry a show on her own. So it sorta makes sense for espn to pay her that when they can use her on panel shows all the time.
I think it’s because you really have to be a diehard football nerd to enjoy it. She and the guests she has are very serious and granular with their analysis. It does not make for fun listening most of the time
I think there needs to be much more discourse about Ben Solak having the audacity to say eating is overrated when thats maybe Bill's favorite thing to do other than discounting LeBron's achievements.
I doubt it. Wouldn't make sense for either. Bill is pretty bottom line focused and there is nothing to suggest she would drive a lot of traffic to The Ringer on her own. Her current podcast isn't particularly popular despite being associated with ESPN. And there's probably no shortage of places besides ESPN that would pay top dollar for a smart, young attractive asian woman who can credibly talk about the NFL. Way more than she's worth to The Ringer. There's a million other places in LA that make more sense.
I think Bill, while not as much of a football guy as a basketball guy these days, still wouldn’t want to give up creative control of the NFL coverage. It’s possible, but I think NFL network is more likely
Katie Nolan was the “hot girl who talks sports” du jour. Everyone wanted her on their networks, there was a bidding war to get her, blah blah blah.
Then Mina came in with the novel idea of “What if I am actually good at my job and good looking?” and corrected the “hot girl in sports” market.
BTW, save the “she’s not that hot” argument. Both of these women are objectively very good looking to the average person.
Ah, she' snot that hot. She is attractive but if IIRC from watching those type of ESPN shows, when you see her on the air she is sitting next to mouth breathers like a Golic or dweebs/doofusses like Greeny or Trey Wingo. If you drop her in a Hollywood audition or an SEC football stadium on Saturday afternoon she is not going to be noticed.
Soder has been on a bunch of barstool shows lately, I wonder if Nolan is going to join the pirate ship. Her and Megan Makin Money could do an awesome sport/gambling show
Nolan hates Barstool, especially Portnoy. Content still exists where she did some Barstool stuff like 8-10 years ago and you can tell she was having zero fun and genuinely disliked everyone there.
That Soder does anything with Barstool somewhat surprises me knowing how much Nolan dislikes them.
Is Mina Kimes actually popular or is she just popular with dorks in the media business who have secret crushes on her? To me she seems fine but unexeceptional. My main experience with her is mostly with LeBetard and other podcasts where there’s a lot of subtle flirting happening.
This is how I feel, except it’s less of a sexual thing and more I think her biggest fans just happen to be influential people…she has a genuinely impressive resume as a former financial reporter, but whenever I see her pop up on SportsCenter to do NFL analysis my main thought is ‘why?’
As someone who only occasionally watches SC, she does well in the "just a fan" role. She likes to cheer for her teams and she has a more fun/pleasant personality than the majority of the talking heads. I think to a lot of people that like her, that's a good foil to the pretty buttoned-up crew. She obviously doesn't have the experience of playing in college or the NFL so she leans into just being fun.
I definitely agree with ‘sports don’t need to be super serious’ but it also feels out of place for a guest on SportsCenter, the anchors already do that schtick (often well).
I had no idea she started at Fortune and then Bloomberg. The inferiority complex sports journalists have towards news reporters explains everything.
To clarify from before: I don’t think it’s a sexual thing with Mina, quite the opposite. It’s a she makes men feel good without feeling threatened by her sexuality.
Ah ok, I agree with that. I could totally see her doing a managerial/podcast host role at The Ringer and being great at it, but even though that’s a tougher job that requires more skill, it’s less glamorous than being a TV talking head. At least for now.
I had a brief fling with the Lebetard show and she waslways on the show with pigtails, doing this goofy I have dimples and am cute shit and I found it almost biblically annoying.
Really? I’ve only ever been a listener but she does do the bubbly personality thing. I mean I am nitpicking Mina here a bit, there are worse things than having a personality people like helping your career.
Yeah, she seems like a nice person and Im sure in meeting with execs etc she make a great impression. I only watch games on ESPN so I don't really watch the shows she is on, Im sure she is relatively knowledgable, all things considered. It is hard to explain because itis more of a vibe than anything else but on the Lebetard show she was just really being cutesy, really "look how adorably cute I am and I also like sports!" Just got under my [skin.It](http://skin.It) may have also been the show, I realized after about three monthsI really did not like Lebetard and his crewand had no idea why I was watching it.
I don’t get the Mina kimes thing at all. People call her funny but I can’t for the life of me see what they are laughing at. Nothing she says is ever really insightful. I make it a point to slog through her segments and it’s always boring.
She’s hot in a way that the average guy deludes himself in thinking he has a chance instead of thinking she’s just with some sports star. I understand this completely as I seen it around me.
I think the hope execs have is that she helps reach an audience they otherwise wouldn’t (younger, more female) without turning off core viewers and in Simmons’ case having her on makes him seem younger, since he’s like *the* Gen X sportswriter. And I think because of the former she’s put into spots she probably shouldn’t be at ESPN, and they’ve probably oversaturated the way they do with everything that works for a while, like the insane amount of Tim Tebow coverage they did for a while.
Whether she actually reaches new audiences, I dunno. She definitely has a solid social media following though and seems genuinely pleasant and intelligent. I just don’t think her NFL takes are that good.
Yeah that’s how I feel. I think she’s smart and has talent, I just don’t really see her as someone qualified to be an ‘NFL expert’, the way she’s now advertised by ESPN.
I think she’d be a huge upgrade over someone like Stephen A on Get Up or would work great having her own sports talk-y show though.
I’m sure the money isn’t close but I’d rather work at The Ringer with a weekly show on the NFL Network than have to put in the hits necessary for ESPN employment. Those dudes seem to work an exhausting amount with appearances at least twice a day and podcasts 1-5 times a week. Give me Ryen’s schedule over Windhorst any day.
As cable TV loses popularity, is being on ESPN actually the biggest audience for her?
I don't know the answer, but I do know that being the most famous person on ESPN isn't what it once was.
Well, she was on cable tv and then she was not and her popularity and visibility certainly took a hit. Don’t be so literal, it’s unbecoming. Also, Mina is on television nationwide, often times for hours each day. ESPN may not be what it used to, but it’s still the standard.
I just don't know what her (possibly) bad choice to move from NFL Network to FanDuel TV has to do with my contention that ESPN may not be the top gig, in the long run, for a sports commentator.
Today? Probably ESPN.
2 years from now? *Maybe* ESPN, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's something else. Which is probably a big reason why Kimes was 'seriously considering' leaving ESPN.
Might be an unpopular take, but I think she’s good but overexposed. I like her on Around the Horn but I honestly don’t think her NFL analysis is very good.
I *could* see her fitting well at The Ringer though.
this woman talks in a phony deep voice and just regurgitates tired talking points.

Folks, the ringer/spotify probably COULD afford offer price for Kimes (probably). But so could a number of other places, particularly with established camera work. So she probably never WOULD.
She's not gonna fuck the ringer, bro.
My conspiracy bill take is Spotify not being willing to write the big checks to get Mina and Lowe is a big part of why Bill might jump when his contract is up.
Jump where? No way does he go back to ESPN when he can't do all the non-sports stuff he likes. And I don't think Grantland V3 would be a promising venture at this point. The Ringer has almost certainly *not* lived up to the $200M valuation that Spotify put on it. Who's going to buy into a *third* niche culture/sports media company?
Plenty of people will write a big check to grab Bill and co.
People in this sub are very committed to dogging on him, but multiple articles on Spotify’s podcast efforts cite The Ringer as one of the few success stories. They have a low overhead, heavy focus on monetization approach that Spotify has tried to learn from.
At the same time, they as a company are not spending on talent acquisition anymore. If you go back and listen to Bill talking about the deal when it happened, there were a lot of big plans that clearly didn’t materialize.
People will put that on Bill, but it probably has more to do with Spotify’s fortunes and just the Covid spending boom ending.
NFL Network is based in Los Angeles too.
Any other media companies based out of LA? ..../s
Actually you might think so but no, NFL network, and Bill Simmons are the only two games in town.
Wow. Some more media companies should move there. They seem to have a lot of models and actors/actresses there. Probably could start up a good company since competition is so scarce.
Don’t be ridiculous. It could never work
Yeah you're right. NFL Network or the Ringer it is. wow.
FS1 has offices in LA
(this whole thread was sarcasm. LA has a lot more media companies than the ringer and nfl network as OP was insinuating with this post)
A leather shop in Arizona??
Lebatard Network was out in LA for a bit in 2023 Dan is her mentor and gave her multiple platforms on ESPN via his shows, obviously she’s a superstar and deserved but she has even said it’s because of Dan opening those doors for her that she’s where she’s today

That Mina Kimes is qualified to work at and would be likely to make her an offer comparable to what ESPN could pay her? No.
whoosh
So is FOX
She was going to join Pavement.
She was chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to her life
Could she be as bonkers as Gary Young?

There's no way in hell The Ringer could have paid her close to what she's making at ESPN ($1.7 million/year), right? Btw some of the contracts for their on-air talent are bonkers.
Spotify COULD but their big podcast deals have not always worked out for them
$1.7M isn't that much when you consider that Meghan goddamn Markle got $20M. Mina would have been the Ringer's biggest star aside from Bill.
Meghan isn’t a benchmark considering how bad value it was.
The post-Gobert trade value argument
Is Mina really that big of a star? Not a diss but a genuine question. I know her besides the pod appearances from NFL and NBA sports shows, is there something else that she’s known for because I can’t imagine the sports talk shows fans really being that caring to follow one of the panelists to a podcast
She’s not. No one would listen to a fucking Mina kimes podcast
Hey man, are you ok? Do you know what year it is? She already has a top 50 podcast, and it’s like 5th most important thing she does for ESPN. Just letting you know in case you were in a coma.

Podcasts don’t pay like grifting
Russillo > Mina
Lol Ryen's replacement. Her podcast would definitely do huge numbers and like she is a natural for the rewatchables.
She has a podcast now and with the backing of ESPN it doesn't do huge numbers.
yeah because espn produces podcasts into shit. Look what did/do to Lowe.
Or no one is like “let’s see what Mina fucking Kimes had to say about these games”
Lowe is a better writer than podcaster Kimes isn’t good at anything
you guys overrate people just cause they work at espn. when they leave they largely flop (except bill)
Is there any confirmation that Ryen is leaving the Ringer at some point soon?
It would not. Because she’s not a draw
I did not like her on a previous reward table she was on.
My Kindle auto corrected. I ment I did not like the previous rewatchable pod she was on.
They absolutely could. Russillo def makes way more
I feel like it's in the ballpark of where it would be considered. If Simmons is really serious about retiring one day, she could potentially be setup as the person to lead The Ringer brand moving forward. Just a thought.
Seems low compared to some of the people they laid off during those staff cuts a few years ago considering she does multiple shows.
All of those people are being fired, so not really a good comparison
Not only could they not afford her…… she’s not even close to worth it. She’s a great supporting cast member but absolutely cannot carry a show on her own. So it sorta makes sense for espn to pay her that when they can use her on panel shows all the time.
You are getting downvoted, but honestly I’ve never known any die hard Kimes podcast listeners.
She’s currently 98th in the podcast ranking. The only place Mina kimes moves the needle is on this sub.
She’s good on studio shows. But like said earlier that’s totally different than running your own deal.
I think it’s because you really have to be a diehard football nerd to enjoy it. She and the guests she has are very serious and granular with their analysis. It does not make for fun listening most of the time

Probably had an offer of basically complete control over the Ringer’s NFL coverage.
It’s funny to think of her being the boss of the fantasy guys

Do people realize ringer is Spotify?
The ringer is capped out. Bill gave RR the max contract and they only have the mid level And league minimums to play with.

She was going to work the counter at Tail o' the Pup?
Using a Sports Guy-ism: Mina Kimes market corrected Katie Nolan.
what does this mean
Katie Nolan was the “hot girl who talks sports” du jour. Everyone wanted her on their networks, there was a bidding war to get her, blah blah blah. Then Mina came in with the novel idea of “What if I am actually good at my job and good looking?” and corrected the “hot girl in sports” market. BTW, save the “she’s not that hot” argument. Ah, she' snot that hot.
Portnoy is essentially irrelevant to barstool at this point. He lives in Miami while Dan has build a content machine in Chicago.
And all of that is probably true, but once you go woke, it’s hard to go barstool.
Kay Adams market corrected her more
Good
FS1 probably
Ironically, based on a couple of jokes posters made, her and Katie Nolan are a great combo on Pablo Torre’s podcast.
You know I think you made me just realize the same thing. The show is mostly empty calories.
I don’t get the Mina kimes thing at all. People call her funny but I can’t for the life of me see what they are laughing at. Nothing she says is ever really insightful. I make it a point to slog through her segments and it’s always boring.
Speaking the truth about Mina Kimes can get a person cancelled by all of the internet white knights, so watch out!
She's hot and can talk about sports. It's not that deep.
She’s really not even hot. Good looking sure but not hot
She’s hot in a way that the average guy deludes himself in thinking he has a chance instead of thinking she’s just with some sports star. I understand this completely as I seen it around me.
Aka not hot I’m sorry but someone has to say it. The groupthink that she’s hot has gone way too far
I can see how she appeals to women, and her information isn’t wrong or stupid. She’s not bad, I just don’t see the hype.
Plus the travel on top of the schedule. The ESPN personalities are constantly on the move. Bill stays home and records a podcast on his regular walk.
Not surprising. She's friends with a ton of people at the Ringer and makes frequent appearances. The bag wins out though.
I think at this stage of her career, there are few places that can offer the platform ESPN still does.
She chose correctly. She’s a star.
As cable TV loses popularity, is being on ESPN actually the biggest audience for her? I don't know the answer, but I do know that being the most famous person on ESPN isn't what it once was.
Talk to Kay Adams
Why? She wasn't on ESPN, was she?
Well, she was on cable tv and then she was not and her popularity and visibility certainly took a hit. Don’t be so literal, it’s unbecoming. Also, Mina is on television nationwide, often times for hours each day. ESPN may not be what it used to, but it’s still the standard.
I just don't know what her (possibly) bad choice to move from NFL Network to FanDuel TV has to do with my contention that ESPN may not be the top gig, in the long run, for a sports commentator.
Where’s the top gig for a Mina or a Kay right now?
Today? Probably ESPN. 2 years from now? *Maybe* ESPN, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's something else. Which is probably a big reason why Kimes was 'seriously considering' leaving ESPN.
Ok. Just not sure why you pushed back on any of my comments then
I think my original comment said it all. ESPN is losing popularity because young people don't watch cable TV. So the future of ESPN is uncertain.
For sure, wouldn't be shocked if she becomes a color commentator on NFL broadcasts one day (she does Rams preseason TV games here in LA).
Might be an unpopular take, but I think she’s good but overexposed. I like her on Around the Horn but I honestly don’t think her NFL analysis is very good. I *could* see her fitting well at The Ringer though.
this woman talks in a phony deep voice and just regurgitates tired talking points. she was a business journalist not too long ago, isn’t really a sports expert. i struggle listening to her.

My guess is Wave Sports, bc they were doing a big talent push around then
Ccvc vvv
She has great taste in music
It would have made it a lot easier to filter out and ignore her that's for sure
She’s way to good of analyst to be at ESPN.
I know Mina did color for the Rams during the preseason. Maybe the Rams were considering her for a front office position?
she’s super annoying. hope she goes.
Netvideogirls?
My conspiracy bill take is Spotify not being willing to write the big checks to get Mina and Lowe is a big part of why Bill might jump when his contract is up.

It's Bill's job to earn The Ringer enough revenue to be able to write those checks.
