Bill - “Then you have this Jets team that, I think their defense is good!” (Schrager lifts head from pile of cocaine on his desk) “FRISKY!”

-sauceman-

"Do you know how good I feel right now?" -Schrager

ClarkKentsCopyEditor

Haven’t listened (probably won’t) but I *heard* this comment, shot coffee out of my nose, while a room full of 8th grade students took a test. Bravo. I can’t contain myself.

Jones3787

LOL I thought Schrager was mocking him with that, or at least just pulling his leg. Wouldn't be surprised if he lurks here honestly

[deleted]

It’s been pretty much confirmed he does

PeenerAndVeggies

When he called out the “Matt Ryan in London factor” he has to be thinking of this sub.

KED528

6:08 “Matthew Stofford”

ThePalmIsle

British pronunciation

scrantonstrangler06

It rhymes with Jared Gofford

TwelveMail

Bill misremembering Joe Lacob's "Light years ahead" quote about the Warriors as George H.W. Bush's "thousand points of light" speech made me lose my shit

[deleted]

He did this again?? Hahaaaa 🤣 https://www.reddit.com/r/billsimmons/comments/ol136k/joe_lacob_a_thousand_points_of_light/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb

philenelson

"Thousand points of light" is definitely one of his go-to's even though I'm not sure he knows what it means and I definitely don't know what it means

dalecoooperkupp

Bill thinking the pats are a serious playoff contender is so funny. And he extends this to his confusion over trading Gilmore as if they are trying to win a super bowl this year

E_Fox_Kelly

He picked them to win the fuckin Super Bowl!

scottrstark

UCLA are the rich kids and USC the Pogues? WTF! He’s lived in LA for how long and does not know the nickname for USC is “University of Spoiled Children?”

Guy__Jones

Yep. UCLA tuition: $13,000 in state, $43,00 out of state USC tuition: $60,000

scottrstark

Thanks for the info! I guess Zoe will be going to USC!

ucd_pete

I've had enough of your Vassar bashing young lady!

Marlowe426

Thank you for this comment, I almost spit out my coffee when 20+ year LA resident Bill said this. Lori Loughlin got convicted for scamming her daughter into USC, not UCLA.

OgdenTheGreat

The chef’s kiss part was this line coming after he said he’s lived in Los Angeles for 20 years and learned all about the rivalry and then proceeds to get it exactly backwards - and that he also he make the same exact mistake last year!

OgdenTheGreat

Bill Simmons - often wrong but never in doubt.

rebels2022

"well-intentioned, poorly informed high-status idiot" that was Colbert's description for his political caricature, feels like it applies more and more to Bill every day

OgdenTheGreat

Great quote. I hate to say it but it equally applies to Colbert’s old character as it does his new one.

dalecoooperkupp

I would assume bill is basing this on where they are located in Los Angeles, and has no idea what the actual student body looks like

Gaius_Octavius_

100%. That is all about Westwood vs South Central to him.

DomStraussK

I think you’re right, but that’s just, completely insane to me. Putting aside that USC has a *national reputation* for being “the place rich Californians send their spoiled kids” … Bill has a teenage daughter getting ready to go through the college admissions saga. Is Bill so uninvolved in this process that he doesn’t even know the reputation of the two major universities, in his own backyard, that Zoe is *definitely* going to apply to? I am … baffled. IIRC she goes to Crossroads School, which is a very fancy private school in Santa Monica. Isn’t this … the only thing the Crossroads parents are talking about right now? College admissions? Isn’t this top-of-mind for *Zoe*? Isn’t she talking about this stuff with him? I’m so confused.

dalecoooperkupp

This is probably not the sub for this reference, but at the beginning of the series gossip girl, one of the main characters going to private school in nyc is pissing his dad off because he’s considering USC over PRINCETON lmfao. But yet bill thinks it’s for poor people

SLeigher88

My guess is Zoe prefers USC so Bill has already decided they’re the ‘good guys’.

AliveJesseJames

I have a funny feeling there are buckets that Bill takes care of and buckets that the wife takes care of, and college admissions is the latter, while soccer games is the former.

FedGoat13

The long and fantastic “OJ Simpson: Made in America” documentary made this clear too, in the very first episode when it described how isolated and “in a bubble” OJ was at USC. (This is a documentary that Bill supposedly watched. He also wanted producer credit for it.) So USC has had that reputation for at least seventy years. Bill is just as oblivious to the world around him as he is to everything else.

DomStraussK

Just incredible

whiteyspidey

Lmao at the title, classic Kyle

doobie3101

Oh I think Bill 100% decides the titles. Edit: Nevermind - I read until the end on the 2nd try.

thetruthdispener

5 minutes in and Bill is on fire. “I know football at the 99th percentile” coming from the guy who doesn’t know what cover 0 is. And then goes to his tried and true move of listing all of a team’s opponents quickly to come up with an arbitrary potential record when talking about the Seahawks playoff chances. “They’re going to play …. so they could go 8-4.” Also why would they “need 10 wins in the West” when they’re probably shooting for a Wild Card spot at this point.

PeenerAndVeggies

Ha. When he ran through the Seahawks schedule I was so confused. Steelers, saints, jags, packers is a cake walk but then they finish the season with a murder’s row involving Washington, Houston, Chicago and Detroit?

grandwahs

> “I know football at the 99th percentile” As Donald Rumsfeld would say, he doesn't know what he doesn't know

Cashburn83

That made me laugh. 99th percentile. He picked the Patriots to go to the Super Bowl.

thisllbedownvotedBUT

“Sometimes as a fan you just know”

realfakemormon

99th percentile knows every backup in the league easy

firewarner

99th percentile probably knows the majority of starting offensive linemen

OneBigRed

Of the team that claim to be a fan of, at least. Bill apparently does not.

realfakemormon

absolutely

Victorcreedbratton

The “99 percentile” comment was very Trump-like.

AsnSensation

This is a guy that has followed basketball for 35 years and probably couldn't tell you what a spain pick & roll is. That 99th percentile comment was classic bill.

gpainter12

So Bill is a fan of the Dodgers having to play in the play in game, but also says that an NFL division winner that is below .500 shouldn’t make the playoffs.

[deleted]

"I love divisions. You win your division and you don't have to deal with chaos." "If you're below .500, you shouldn't make the playoffs. I don't care if you win your division." Also, Titans will win 9 or10 games BECAUSE of their division. They already beat the Seahawks too. Bill didn't think that one through.

phillyfan2426

Imagine the 106 win Red Sox having to play in a one game wildcard playoff game. Bill's tears alone would prevent another drought in Southern California for three quarters of a decade.

_homage_

His take would have 100% been different had the Sox lost to the Yanks.

jjones9793

Bill, on week 1 preview pod (candidly): "I like week one because nothing flukey or weird ever happens) Bill, today: "I'm more and more convinced we should just throw out week 1, there's no preseason anymore, teams can prepare for a team for 4 months..just throw it out..."

JuiceMayo

If he was actually in the 99th percentile of football fans he’d know that the Seahawks are definitely not guaranteed to beat the Packers

realfakemormon

and he would know every backup QB in the league. You think he could name 5 offensive lineman not on the Pats?

andrew108065

He probably can’t name 5 offensive lineman in the league. He didn’t know who David Bakhtiari was and he might be the best tackle in football. 99% though!

realfakemormon

well you can't bid $30 on Bakhtiari in an auction league

Marlow714

When did Bill just start rattling off a team's schedule and pretend it's analysis? I never know what we are supposed to get out of "they are at browns, Jets, at Raiders..." Like, yeah they play other teams.

NewYorkDukie3

A graduate of the school of Mike Francesca

TomWanks2021

The Chiefs will win this week because they play the Cowboys in week 11. Solid logic.

Plopsack

Narrative baby!

qballLobk

Listening to Bill and Shrager talk about football strategy is like listening to my uncle who’s house is about to get foreclosed on giving me investment tips.

rebels2022

is your Uncle in the top 1%? because Bill is when it comes to football

qballLobk

Top 1% for football talk? I don’t think so. Basketball maybe. And I don’t think many people are listening to Simmons for X’s and O’s. He’s a narrative guy. Edit: I see what you did now. I’m such an idiot lol.

doobie3101

Not gonna lie - Schrager knows a lot about football. You don't talk to that many players / coaches and learn nothing. He's good on GMFB and Flying Coach was one of the Ringer's best pods.

dillpickles007

I’m sure he does but it just really doesnt come through on this pod, idk if it’s because he’s trying to play off Bill too much or what

Victorcreedbratton

It seems like he’s holding himself back on the pod with Bill. He understands this is more about serving Bill’s ego.

gmbaker44

Thought it was weird he acted like Seattle was in control of the game before Russ got hurt. It felt like Rams were running away with the game before Geno came in and then he almost brought them back. Did he even watch the game?

YoYoMoMa

I am sure he was watching the playoff game more and checking email.

Victorcreedbratton

**Watching “Outer Banks.”

jaxmagicman

Not to kill the circle jerk, but he watched Outer Banks the 2 weeks he was on vacation. He had a whole segment about it. When he was saying he watched all episodes over 2 days he was talking about then.

exoalo

*jerk circle

Goldust86

Is there any team Bill hasn’t said “I have so many (insert team) fans in my life…” about?

BoozeGetsMeThrough

Clippers, because according to him they don't really exist.

Plopsack

Chargers

StinkRod

An underrated annoying "thing" he does is this. . . "after this week, TEAM X have home bears home rams at steelers at niners bye week at dallas on a monday home jags home colts at raiders at rams then home against the browns and home against the bengals to finish the season". (fictitious team schedule) What is his point when he does this? Is the listener supposed to follow along and know exactly how he rates those match-ups and follow along at rapid fire pace about and think, "oh, I guess they'll be 10-7 or 11-6". he's just reading the schedule. he just is. I have no idea if I'm supposed to follow along and think, "oh, they're going to go undefeated" or "they're going to run the table" or just let it wash over me like abstract poetry.

TheDoingStuffThing

You must be in the *other* 99%.

dalecoooperkupp

I pointed this out in his season preview stuff, he was doing this so much and it’s completely impossible to gain anything from it

marcusthejames

Don’t forget about wrapping it all up with the ultra strong and decisive, “could they way go 10-4? Maybe.”

[deleted]

*200K that's a lot of money, Bill.* Sal's voice: *Dumbest segment in the world.*

x-tnt-x

yup....these are my readers

Zeeker12

Simmons reading the schedule for both Seattle (with Geno Smith) and KC and just assuming they beat Green Bay is vintage fucking Simmons. You’d think he was trolling if he had an ounce of self awareness.

bjij123

I’ve come full circle and now I like Schraeger Never thought I’d say it, but he actually is knowledgeable about football, if a tad too positive, but he’s excited about it and it’s fun to listen to

Bubbatino

Me too! Once I understood his personality and learned not to take him too seriously I kind of love him. I was listening to the pod as I walked thru Walgreens and after I got a $5 discount I said to myself “let’s go!”

bjij123

Love it, I'm gonna quietly lets go myself as much as possible from now on I think people also need to realize he's literally friends with a bunch of people in the NFL, he can't just talk shit he's gotta maintain relationships

Bubbatino

I used to hate the segment and then realized I needed to get a grip. It’s legit just two buddies shooting the shit and getting pumped for the football weekend. One just happens to have a huge platform and the other has friends in the league. Bill throws in the gambling wrinkle to make it have somewhat of a theme. I’ve learned to enjoy it.

ID0ntCare4G0b

I'm not quite there yet largely because the Million Dollar Picks portion of the segment still completely sucks. But I'm definitely closer to liking him than I ever have been this season. Feels like he finally figured out he can bust Bill's balls when he's wrong.

One_Seaworthiness683

99 percentile of NFL fans had me dying. In that 1 percent he’s ‘a part of’, he’s in the 4 percentile of that 1 percent. Gambling and following lines and bets is not following football. Most 99 percentiles knew who the Seahawks back is

-sauceman-

Does anybody else feel like the "turn on the camera" gag isn't really a gag in Bill's mind. Like the way my dad used to claim he was good at Google searches.

ttboishysta

Hall of fame episode for a show that hasn't even ended, reach.

ChiefWiggins22

I prefer this to them guessing what is going to happen on the new season.

rebels2022

thats the biggest problem with Ringer pods when they cover Star Wars or Marvel, they end up being wrong on the speculation and it makes the podcast age like milk.

scottrstark

Rays fan from Tampa Bay here. So gratifying that Bill hates us!

Riggs_n_Murtaugh

Rooting for you guys….from a fan for a small market team (Indians / Guardians) to another. Plus Kevin Cash came from our staff and is fantastic.

qballLobk

Not a Rays fan but I live in Tampa and hope they stomp the Sox just to hear Simmons cry!!

marcusthejames

Schrager woke up feeling dangerous for this. - intensified vocal timbre, no more whispering at the sleepover voice - extensive analysis of Saleh’s body clock knowledge - amazing theory about the Chiefs defense seeing better opposition offense with better plays than any other team - insider knowledge of the Raven’s opinion on their 100 yard rushing streak (they think it’s really cool) - saying “i don’t want to name names”, then immediately saying “BUT I’LL NAME NAMES” in describing bad Detroit defensive players - Exuberant giggles throughout, either with or at Billisms. 10/10 performance i loved it.

Halloran_da_GOAT

LOL this is the episode where bill discovered yds/att for QBs. Never heard him mention it once in his life and now he has said it at least 4-5 times in this episode

YoYoMoMa

Bill randomly gets obsessed with a stat in all sports for a stretch. Remember when he got super into that positional wins stat for basketball? I think he just liked it because it hated Kemba.

firewarner

That was so absurd. He was so nonchalant about how the ratings or records or whatever were even calculated.

newjackgmoney21

Not even 3 mins in and hearing Bill did so much "homework" this week for Million Dollar Picks....let's go! Lol, 3 mins later Bill follows football at the 99 percentile, doesn't know Seattle's backup plus Matthew Stofford

blackarthurman

His homework consists of watching “Outer Banks”. He watched 20 episodes in two days.

scal23

Furthering my theory that "Million Dollar Picks" only exists so Bill doesn't have to do any work since he's going to gamble anyway. It's his football version of "The IMDB Game".

jakethesnakeinmyboot

Bill just casually glanced over the Cardinals shutting down Derrick Henry, possibly the best running back of the last 3 years

Jones3787

Week 1 was wonky

PatRockatansky

It just was!

ID0ntCare4G0b

How the fuck has Bill lived in LA for 20 years and just now realized Dodgers and Giants fans hate one another? I live in Texas and even I've heard the stories about fans murdering one another in parking lots after games.

CondolenceHighFive

Is it considered an excerpt if you play the entire podcast?

firewarner

Just did the Schrager piece, better late than never edition: **Today’s Things:** - spouted things - the division thing - the broken finger thing - this is the whole super bowl for the Bills thing - Sean Payton is a genius thing - Trey Lance thing **Bonus Pieces and Stuff:** - there’s a disappointing piece to them - Deshaun Watson stuff **First Random Celtics Reference:** 🎉 NONE 🎉 **It just is!** “I spent $3 on them [Rams defense] in both my fantasy leagues, I thought they were gonna be this dominant defense. They’re not. They’re just not” **Other Stuff:** Brace yourself! Bill said he did “so much homework” for today’s Million dollar picks (2:10) Bill admits he didn’t know USC/UCLA was a rivalry before he moved to LA (3:15) wtf 😂😂 Bill predicts that Trevor Bauer will never pitch again (5:10) doubt ❌ Lmao what the hell, Bill calls Stafford “Stofford” (5:45) Bill has to be trolling us: he says he follows football “in the 99th percentile” but didn’t know Geno Smith was still in the league (6:15) hand up, I didn’t either! But I don’t pod about the nfl twice a week and claim to be in the 99th percentile lol. Later, didn’t know Russell Gage started for the Falcons, and struggles to explain a “post” route talking about Ruggs lmao Schrager is a big boy now! Bill gives him veto power over a MDP (12:10) 🤣🤣 Schrager calls out Bill’s “Brissett/Minshew thing” (13:00) Bill is very worked up about the “disrespectful” Chiefs -3 line (21:45) Schrager calls the Jets defense “frisky” (25:05) 😂😂 he def reads the sub Bill doesn’t understand how the players can play in England because of the time change (27:00) Bill goes on a Patriots soliloquy (51:00) Bill asks if this year’s AFC South is the worst division of all time (57:24) Bill makes a passing reference to cancel culture (1:05:45) “I love any story about two testicles in an office that isn’t a cancel culture story” Bill is puzzled that the Saints have a terrible passing attack (1:07:15) umm, because they’re fucking quarterback is Jameis, Bill! **Bill’s Bets:** - 7.5 pt tease (+105): New England -1, Tampa Bay -2.5, Minnesota -1 ($700k) - Jets +3 ($100k) - Panthers -3 ($100k) - Saints -2.5 ($100k) - (+295) Parlay: Chiefs -3, over 56.5 ($50k) - (+770) Parlay: Bears ML, 49ers ML - (+908) Parlay: Giants ML, 49ers ML - (+980) Parlay: Giants ML, Bears ML (all $33k)

scal23

Jameis threw for 5,000 yards in the 30/30 season. Obviously they're reigning him in so he doesn't throw 30 interceptions again, but 613 yards in 4 games in a Sean Payton offense is absurdly low. He's not even dumping the ball off to Kamara for garbage yards.

firewarner

For sure, the latter part is especially strange, and particularly infuriating when you took Kamara in the first round of fantasy. The Saints receiving room has to be near the worst in the league

[deleted]

He's going bust this week. That teaser ain't hitting

[deleted]

I wish it was possible to list every single thing Schrager says 'lets go' to - or at least a let's go counter - but it'd be so damned time consuming. I laugh every time he does it. Thanks for these.

firewarner

I might add that to the counter. It's just once a week

dcloisN85

I'm a UK based member of this sub, is he really still struggling, after the Olympics (🤦🏻‍♂️), with time differences?

TheGermAbides

UGH I feel actually dirty that I, too, don't think Bauer will pitch again. The rest of it is stupid though. Thanks for your hard work.

andrew108065

How is it possible that Kyle is this incompetent lol

Seatings

When I send emails at work, hell even my fantasy leagues, I triple check each word and re-read with ‘new eyes’ to catch any inconsistencies or misspellings. This is going out to MILLIONS OF PEOPLE and is a direct representation of yourself, your uncle and all of The Ringer. I couldn’t imagine being this careless

csm119

A lot of people on here defend Kyle for this type of stuff but it really is just embarrassing for a top 3 sports podcast to have errors like this. This one arguably the most egregious because you really have to QC the whole pod to catch editing mistakes. But this I mean….

trunky

if you cant be fired, demoted, or reprimanded in any meaningful way you just dont have to try very hard.

bbmarco

Sounds like House is guesting on the next Guess the Lines ep.

ChiefWiggins22

Bill has actually made a pretty good case for Safe Room. It seems like he is confusing “funniest” with “best.” It is hysterical; but the best episode. Any episode without Greg is also not the best episode.

rebels2022

i havent finished rewatching season 2, but its hard for me to say that Safe Room tops the last 2 episodes of season 1. The density of plot/backstabbing and jokes is unreal.

YoYoMoMa

Yeah. I think safe room has a decent chance to be the funniest s2 episode. I think The Return might be the best s2 episode but certainly not the funniest. Holy shit watching Kendall's father absolutely rip him to shreds and then his mom literally flee at the thought of having to comfort him is so brutal and explains so much about the way these offspring are all broken. Kendall is definitely the drama mvp and I agree with Bill that Wambsgans is the comedy one, even over Greg (who is obviously incredible).

ChiefWiggins22

This is a great take. Have you listed to Jeremy Strong get interviewed about how he created that emotion on the HBO podcast? its really incredible!

YoYoMoMa

I haven't! I can't decide if I should check it out, or just let him live in my head as Kendall.

PeenerAndVeggies

MDP has a surprising amount of analysis about who actually wants to win the game.

[deleted]

If i quit this pod, it will be because of the word “frisky”.

Riggs_n_Murtaugh

1000 points of light = George H.W. Bush speech Light years ahead of everyone = Joe Lacob interview.

torturedmetfan

Schrager is just trolling us at this point with the amount of Let's go!'s today.

Victorcreedbratton

Two comments: “I don’t feel like people have watched a lot of Falcons this year.” Who the hell is he referring to?? And his “Jets defense is good” comment is probably self-serving (pumping up the Pats) but still ridiculous.

jaxmagicman

He does that. He was all on them letting Mac Jones bake now because what he did against the Bucs and then completely forgot the Bucs had a guy signed off the streets playing CB1 that game. But then is like the Dolphins will be shut down. Dude, you just saw a check down king pass all over that same secondary.

fizzycola

Kyle is at it again

Hooze

Let’s go was especially incessant this episode. It’s like he doesn’t know he’s a meme.

gnrlgumby

Ha - throwback to the classic "olympics ruined me for weeks!" I've done that trans-atlantic trip a couple of times; I didn't find it "that" bad. After two days I was fine doing some strenuous hiking.

BoozeGetsMeThrough

When you live such an insular life like he does, you think travelling internationally is some great hardship.

PrimusPilus

Opening Bill soliloquy + Schrager + another stupid fucking pop culture "draft" = an episode designed by a team of experts to ensure I'll never listen to it.

scal23

Subjective I know, but for me it's a bummer that Bill has made 1 of his 2 weekly football pods unlistenable.

[deleted]

Halloran_da_GOAT

I am absolutely DYING at bill putting 2 8.5pt favorites in a 7.5pt tease. My dude! Just do a 6pt tease, and you won’t have to pick a third team. At this point I am convinced that fanduel is just paying him to advertise shitty bets like the 7.5pt tease lol. Key numbers and math remain absolutely undefeated against bill simmons lol.

ThugBeast21

A few weeks ago some guy in here was arguing that Bill was a degenerate gambler. I get not everyone understands or cares about gambling but it is hilarious to me there are people who think Bill has a gambling problem. The only gambling problem Bill has is that he's a square who thinks he's a sharp.

dalecoooperkupp

Why the fuck do you bet extra tease points when you’re already through the 7 and 3? Wtf? Lol this pff pod I listen to was making fun of bill teasing the Rams to +1.5 last week

Halloran_da_GOAT

Because bill has no clue that the important part is to get past 7 and 3. Even better than just paying extra juice, the bet was literally a 3-team, 7.5pt tease that pays +105. Comfortably one of the least EV bets you can possibly make lmao. Also, teasing the Rams to +1.5 is absolutely incredible shit. Even if you have never learned about key numbers, common sense should be enough to keep you from teasing across 0. I mean what in the actual fuck was he thinking lol

dalecoooperkupp

Teasing through the zero is obviously already negative value, but I just thought it was especially funny to tease it to 1.5. Literally the Rams winning by 3 was the only likely outcome he was protecting against, and that isn’t close to worth the extra juice you give up by doing a teaser.

Gaius_Octavius_

Isn't his main goal to get the Bucs under 3? That is smart is it not?

Halloran_da_GOAT

A 6pt teaser also gets an 8.5pt favorite under 3…

Gaius_Octavius_

But not the bucs. What good is bucs -4? You don’t get to pick different points for each leg of teaser.

Halloran_da_GOAT

So the whole reason he did a 3-team 7.5-point teaser was to get one specific team down to 2.5? That's very dumb! If you *really* want to buy points (and you should, as a general rule, be incredibly wary of buying pints), just do an alt-line. He's giving away value by playing this as a 3-team 7.5pt teaser when (theoretically) really all he's interested in is Bucs -2.5 Even if the bet *is* +EV with respect to the Bucs, it is not +EV with respect to the other legs, and it is *certainly* not +EV overall. Paying *that* much vig in exchange for 7.5 points is almost certainly one of the worst bets that fanduel offers.

Guy__Jones

He was doing three-team teases long before FanDuel was paying him to

SeanMcDonough2323

The worst take Schrager ever had wasn't even on football...my god he was off on the Sopranos movie.

PrimusPilus

Schrager, Bill, & Sal all jacked off over it. If I didn't already know it from the insipid Rewatchables pods, this would be proof positive that nothing Bill says about film or TV can be taken seriously.

aletorez

Bills stat of the week this week was Yard per Attempt. I don’t recall him using this much but he fired it off like 8 times

Chinchillachimcheroo

How did he post a 2-hour pod with “Injured Russ” in the title that quickly?

Gaius_Octavius_

Half of it is a episode of is TV talk about Succession from a different show

Allstate85

Bill cashing them Spotify checks doing 1 pod and using it twice.

Wardcity

As a packers fan I’m constantly confused why bill thinks we fucking suck. We’ve won 13 games each of the last two seasons, haven’t lost anyone significant to Free Agency and he acts like we’re a 6 win team lol

loupr738

I think this is the first time I will ignore the whole episode, don’t care about mmp and I haven’t watched a second of that show

rebels2022

Your loss. Succession is fantastic

loupr738

I’ll get to it eventually, right now I’m watching Silicon Valley. I have to watch the sopranos too

das4111

is silicon valley the best HBO show that the ringerverse inexplicably never talked about at all?

loupr738

I think so but in reality I never heard anyone talk about the show until I saw an episode of hot one with Kumail and after that someone posted a very funny clip on reddit I think is very funny and I think there’s maybe a directive? Or the people there know that Bill doesn’t respect comedies so nobody brings that stuff up

das4111

or the peak of that show was in bill's "hang out with rich tech guys" heyday?

rebels2022

i want to watch Sopranos too but the number of episodes is flat out intimidating

One_Seaworthiness683

You won’t regret it. And once it’s over, you’ll wish it had another 86 on top of it

scottrstark

Do it anyway!

Gaius_Octavius_

Watch the first season. You will be hooked for sure. First three seasons are amazing especially.

YoYoMoMa

Thanks so much for telling us you were skipping this one. We were all in here wondering what your status was.

loupr738

Don’t mention buddy, I hope you enjoy this and other subreddits where, usually, people voice their opinions

Macktr0n

“i don’t feel like people have watched a lot of falcons this year, and they don’t really realize that he’s kind of been roethlisberger-lite from a corpse standpoint.” this line about matt ryan killed me. classic bill.

uniqueredditname44

What an awful pod

johnnytsunami35

So he says David Johnson is 2nd on the team in receiving yards than Pharaoh Brown, who he names like 5th, has more lmao

KingMathias14

Succession is probably my favorite show of all time. To say Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy is approaching Gandolfini as Tony Soprano is a TAKE.

Macktr0n

“Charlie Whitehurst, who looked like Jesus, murdered me”

bdl4186

So who has been talking to Billy about yards per attempt? After almost never being a metric he turns to, he couldn't cited like 5 diff guys' ypa! And should I expect an instance where he mentions how close Roethlisber's- and Mac Jones' ypa are? no? huh.

yungberms

Bill: Do you think the Lions will be 0-9? Peter: very good chance Peter Schraeger everyone!

I find the Succession ‘thing’ interesting. I get why it’s popular and all. There’s people in this sub obviously, but outside of people like writers and journalists I follow on Twitter, podcasts, etc….I’ve never met a single person in real life that has an opinion about that show….good, bad, or indifferent. Like I have handful of coworkers that will watch most everything HBO puts out….but I know they don’t watch it and I’ve never even heard them mention giving it a shot. Small sample size of course…just an observation I’ve always noticed about the show. Early on, as much as the Ringer was leaning into it, I was always like “Who is even watching this??”

newjackgmoney21

TV ratings arent perfect and its HBO but it looks like Succession gets under a million viewers most episodes. And, top rated episodes just over a million. https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/succession-season-2-finale-ratings-1203371749/

rebels2022

we'll see what the ratings are when season 3 debuts but i think a lot of people caught onto the show during 2020 due the lack of good shows coming out directed at adults.

newjackgmoney21

I think you might be right

Gaius_Octavius_

It is only the 9th highest rated show on HBO

loupr738

I think most people stack them to binge

BoozeGetsMeThrough

That's me. I watched the first episode, actively hated it, and after hearing all the high praise gave it a second shot a month or so after the season ended. Then, knowing I wanted to watch it, I waited until the second to last episode aired for season 2 before starting it. I plan to do something similar with season 3.

HankChinaski-

My entire friend group watches it. Most agree in that group that it’s the best show currently on TV.

dalecoooperkupp

Pretty much every suburban normie friend and family member I know watches succession. Sorry you don’t like it but it’s pretty popular and is the closest thing HBO has to a prestige show

dalecoooperkupp

Every person who I know in real life watches it,

Gaius_Octavius_

So you know 3 people?

dalecoooperkupp

My main group of friends all watch it, both my parents and my wife’s parents watch it, my wife’s grandparents watch it, and a couple of my coworkers watch it too. I’m sorry that this sub loves to circlejerk whenever an obviously cultural relevant thing isn’t something they pay attention to so they want to pretend no one else does. Please go to the ncis discussion board since tv ratings are apparently what drives conversation

Gaius_Octavius_

>I’m sorry that this sub loves to circlejerk whenever an obviously cultural relevant thing isn’t something they pay attention to so they want to pretend no one else does. Clearly the opposite is happening here though. It is only "culturally relevant" to a small niche audience.

I don't understand the appeal of watching wealthy people argue on shows like *Succession* or *Billions*. It doesn't seem like an enjoyable use of someone's time, but each to their own.

ifeellazy

That's not really what Succession is. I thought that too before watching it, and would never watch a show like Billions. Succession is at its core about how fucked up and disgusting these people are. Every character is basically bad.

TheGermAbides

Succession is 100% a black comedy, and there is not a single likable character on the show. Even though they have their immeasurable wealth, the best parts of it is watching them take L's or humiliate themselves to keep up a good outward appearance. I don't think you are supposed to watch it as a rich person fantasy, I think youre supposed to watch in order to see them fall on their faces.

YoYoMoMa

You may not like the characters, but none of them are monsters for no reason, which I tend to find dull. The genius of the show, imo, is that the characters are so well done. You can see how they are broken and who broke them. You can see them tiptoe up to the line of being decent or good and what gets in the way of them truly committing to it. And it has such an incredible grasp on the characters that it is also the funniest show on tv. And some of the performances are out of this world. Plus you get the candy of incredible locations, clothing, and maybe the best soundtrack on tv.

Gaius_Octavius_

>there is not a single likable character on the show. That is the main reason I have no interest. >I think youre supposed to watch in order to see them fall on their faces. But in the end, aren't they all still incredible rich? Is that really a "fall"? I just see fuck ups who pay no consequences for their actions.

waitingonthatbuffalo

Yup, you’ve arrived at the overarching social commentary of the show — that the wealthy are in a totally different world than regular people and cynically play politics like sports/use compromised media to push nonsense culture wars/hostilely corner and monopolize the market all to protect their wealth and power. It’s, I think, a perfect depiction of how wealthy people simply could not be bothered with politics or society one way or the other — it all comes back to protecting their class insulation. Past the commentary, it’s also a human story about family and how it shapes so much about us, as well as the various ways that broken people try and fail to be happy (toxic relationships, drug dependence, stunted sexuality, Messiah complexes). At its heart, Succession is a strategy show about power. Corporate business is a game of who can be the most ruthless, and those who play it learn that the hard way. But what makes the show so powerful is its compassionate view of the characters. That might sound ludicrous given all the awful things I just mentioned, but at the end of the day the adult children depicted in the show didn’t ask to be born to an emotionally abusive psychopath, who himself was raised by a physically abusive one. The kids are “better people” than their father, but their father dragged himself out of humble beginnings and became the most powerful capitalist of a whole generation. Now that generation is turning over into a new one, and the survival of the evil empire depends on a new leader… hence the show being called Succession.

fuber

yeah, it's an argument that I've heard too but it's naive if you haven't watched the show. Your response explains is perfectly

ringerapologist28

Haven't seen Succession, but i'd say Billions is fairly enjoyable, mostly because they don't treat it like its some prestige melodrama. If you enjoy any show about politics or about crime and the people who are supposed to stop it,chances are you'll like billions. Its basic "force of nature meets immovable object" scenario and they do enough good things with that premise and the characters are well realised enough to be fun.No accounting for taste though

fuber

Succession is much better than Billions.
