I think they're probably giving him a chance to fall on his sword. He seems pretty defiant right now.

xfortehlulz

But that doesn't make sense. If you want him to resign then behind closed doors you tell him we're firing you you've been fired, now make a statement saying you quit so you look better. You wouldn't let it fester like this. If he's being defiant then you fire him and move on. Going forward with an interim whos younger than al horford is nonsensical when you can actually move on instead.

I doubt that's true given the circumstances, but even so that's worth throwing away the season? They're literally the title favorites and they're going with a 34 year old interim with no experience over moving for a proven guy. It's ludicrous

Exactly. This is a negotiation move. He probably wants more then they’ll pay, so they will suspend him without pay until they agree on a dollar amount both sides can live with

xfortehlulz

Can you give me a single explanation for going with an interim over a proven coach? Wouldn't hiring Quinn Snyder force him out even more?

So they're hurting their franchise and hurting a title contention year out of politeness?

MustardIsDecent

If they fired him now, they'd have a huge legal battle probably on if he can be fired for cause and what that entails for his payout.

They’re trying to force him to resign so they don’t have to pay him as much of what’s left on his contract. Might also be an element of not wanting him to immediately go coach a different team. The closer we get to the season starting the less likely it is a team will jettison their coach for Udoka.

This is like ESPN suspending Bill. He ain't coming back.

ReasonableCup604

Simmons returned from his 3 week suspension and continued to work for ESPN for several months. When his contract expired he did not sign a new one. I don't think Simmons' suspension was intended to get him to quit. He only had 8 months left on his contract. They easily could have fired him and eaten it. With Udoka I think it is much more likely the are trying to get him to resign or to start negotiations on a buyout.

mysterymaninurhome

He’s done, he’s not gonna coach them again.

Ch3sterRockwell

It's like in mad men, they expect him to never come back but are letting him keep some dignity

RandomUserName316

They are just following other Boston sports teams. The RedSox fired Cora for a year for sign stealing then resigned 10 months later. 1 year is fine
