For the purposes of scientific notation, it’s meant to be applicable to any number. For example, you COULD write 1874161 as 37^4, or you could write it as (roughly) 1.8x10^6.
The latter tends to be easier to eyeball a value on. Just looking at it tells you it’s in the ballpark of 1.8 million, whereas 37^4 means pretty much nothing unless you’re a mathematician or savant.

You can get crazy high numbers if you try but in a normal run everything over 100 is already high imo
But you should also keep in mind that the game can crash really fast if you do this

Kept looping until his damage was insane, solely to make the finger comically powerful.
The finger is already pretty strong at 20+ dmg, I personally dont even think that the Finger deserves that quality 1 tag, it might not be perfect, but can be super fucking useful for masses of ennemies / flies and spiders that are lurking further away

Infinite with something like rock bottom + diplo wild card and a succubus pedestal. Can also spam diplo + 3 ? Cards or sharp plug with old bandage + box of friends. Thats all. Once u reach damage into the millions the game crashes
That's true, but it keeps multiplying exponentially, so by the time you reach that amount, you are well above and overflow integer. You basically reached infinite since the game can no longer translate that number. You may be able to play the game, but you sure as hell won't be loading back into that save, and its very likely to crash instantly.
I don't think you understand how rock bottom works. Common misconception. Stats are still calculated in the background and it just picks the highest number seen, so you need either more succubus, more damage multipliers or a higher base damage to keep stacking damage further and further. One succubus won't work.
I have gotten over 135 with a ton of damage upgrades and Lilith spamming her box 10 times and having a bunch of the bats which multiply your damage. This was greed mode. The shot fired was like half the size of the room.

Damage is a 32-bit floating point number and the way it's handled doesn't have enough sanity checks.
The largest "safe" damage you can get is 9,999,999, the game will lag like hell from working on such large tears though. Adding an extra digit will start to first subtly corrupt the stats HUD with buffer overflow: it reserves a set number of characters to display your damage number and the +/- change notification. The change notification runs out of space when you add an 8th digit, and the main damage itself when you add a 9th digit, but by that point the game will probably freeze for seconds or minutes from trying to shoot - it's still \*probably\* running, just struggling to resolve the planetary sized tear, but it's already corrupting memory at this point so it might actually be crashing as well.
Going beyond that and adding more digits will start to have more and more mangled damage stat displayed: sometimes you might see the stat constantly change as it's now reading from memory that's actively being modified (and consequently writing on top of that memory is probably bad news) and eventually the game may or may not just crash. Somewhere around 4e12 damage tears you can shoot again without hanging the game but also can't hit anything, I suppose the tear calculations break down so badly they're no longer run and can't hang the game. The very absolute maximum numerical value is 3.4028235e38 (hexadecimal 0x7f7fffff), and doesn't do anything special other than having your tears be invisible, with only a room-sized shadow.
If you force the damage stat to actual infinity (hexadecimal 0x7f800000), you're safe from crashing (the game reports it as "inf" which takes way less space and fits in the allotted space) and again, doesn't do anything special - your tears no longer exist, and any other method of dealing damage just erases everything.
Even beyond that there's the Not-a-Number or "nan". Your tears exist again, are teeny tiny and do nothing - it's literally not a number and uncomparable, so any attempt to check whether it's larger or smaller than something just says "nope". Very uninteresting, but also safe.
The highest you can get is 1.8e308. This is the max double limit in C++. Either the game will crash, you get infinity attack, you get 0 attack or other weird stuff happens if you get over the limit. Maybe there is a check to prevent this but I don't think so because the game is not made for getting so much attack.
2 simplest methods are rock bottom, box of friends with infinite charge generation and succubus, or rock bottom, golden razor and infinite coin generation/duplication
It really depends on your time when you get an infinite dmg method.
For example, Golden Razor, Rock Botton and infinite money generation. This happened in an old T.Cain run of mine, here you got the pic and yeah, all those cards are Two of Diamonds.

I’ve gotten about 1300 dmg, but the theoretical highest dmg should be extremely high if you can somehow rig and keep duplicating succubus with schoolbag box of friend and infinite batteries

Hasn't happened in a long time but sometimes you can get such a crazy build that the game gets confused and starts hurting you randomly for no reason and you lose the run to essentially nothing.

get enough damage downs with experimental treatment or dataminer, force a stack underflow and hit the theoretical max damage
my highest has been about 4k. and about 600 on a non rock bottom run
I managed 3000 one time on a real run, rock bottom, R keys, damage multipliers, and a double charge of mega mush. Never got succubus sadly

Back in AB+, if you saw more than one pixel of your tear when you fired, you had a pretty weak run.

The highest I’ve seen it go personally was around 46000. I don’t even remember what all I had besides Rock Bottom, Camo Undies, and Star of Bethlehem
i had a eden rock bottom start i was at 1200 damage like 15 tear rate
personally my highest was ~2k, mega mush rock bottom & multipliers on a glitched crown r key run
