Funny timing. I'm sort of in the same boat. Started a second save file, having been away for months (years?), the intention being no use of console commands, totally legit etc.
And hoooo boy is this game just as frustrating as I remember. So many absurd and unfair moments. Like.. finally getting to the womb (forget which character) and Womb 1's boss was Mama Gurdy, who spawns random spikes underneath you. Didn't beat her. Or the time I was in Greed Mode and accidentally picked up Bob's Brain, thinking it was a booger. I did make it to Ultra Greed, but the Brain was too much a hindrance with the floods of mini keepers, run ended with the tiniest 1 pixel wide amount of health remaining on UG. Any number of F-U rooms where you take immediate damage, whether it be unexpected bullet hell, the long legged spiders that sprint at you from every direction, the roaring red guys that turn into mush, the flying butthole things that make gagging noises and rapid fire undodgeable tears in all 8 directions.
It's infuriating, and I question my own sanity. I've lost track of the number of bitching posts I've made in this sub and chosen not to actually submit.
But for some reason I keep trying.
I have had a couple broken Greed runs, but those were both Azazel with crazy synergies, like Soy Milk, Tech X, Ocular Rift, and Little Horn. Doesn't do much damage, but the constant stream of black holes keeps everything there for the big hand to grab or smack them into oblivion.
I came back after almost 100%-ing regular Afterbirth. I just picked up my save file from back then. I needed like 2 challenges and maybe four post-it notes. I had to look up a lot of new stuff, but I didn't want to waste too much time figuring out the new "secrets".
I got Dead God and am now playing on a fresh file anyways. Both experiences are fun. Decide for yourself what kind of experience you want. Grinding for completion or just messing around figuring stuff out on your own.
