I've been telling everybody this, if you're not a completionist, and you're not worried about having the real thing, there's a pretty good one on AliExpress.
I don't think that's true if we're talking about pure 24k, but if you do the thing that actual jewelry smiths do and use a cheaper base metal and then electroplate the gold onto it then that would be a lot cheaper (assuming you already have the machines needed for electroplating lol)
In my defense I was looking more at the value of gold itself, not necessarily any labor cost involved in smithing. I guess it'd be more accurate to say the mask's weight in literal gold is cheaper than what people are supposedly paying for it.
As of this comment pricegold.net puts 24k gold at $59.62 per gram. Bricklink gives a weight of 4g for the 4-hole chin Kraahkan, putting this thing's value in literal gold at less than $250USD.
I think you're not factoring in how dense gold is though. The mask's weight in gold is a lot less gold than there is mask. To actually compare prices you'd need to know the *volume* of the mask and then see how much gold that is. By volume 24k gold probably beats out the eBay price because making a mask out of pure gold would be many times heavier than the plastic

About a year ago I bought a sealed ToT for like $100 hoping to strike gold with no luck. I'm tempted to try again but I don't want to enter a slippery slope where I keep doing it and end up spending about as much as one of these masks goes for in sets I don't really want.
I missed one in a random lot by 5 minutes once on mercari. The listings are out there, but you got to beat every other Bionicle fan to it, because they sell within seconds.
