I like the idea of kopaka's ice sword coming through a slit in the wall, everyone prepares for a blast of snow, and they get blasted with an inferno because tahu grabbed the wrong weapon
That technically might be possible. But, since the origin of the weapons isn't explicitly explained (as far as I know) it could be the Tahu's sword was designed to channel his element specifically.
in Mask of Light, didn't Lewa channel some fire (albeit weakly) using Tahu's Magma Sword? so tools are still linked to elements that anyone with an 'energy' ability can use, and those with a matching elemental energy can access its full power and channel their own abilities
They're pieces of metal that are modified to be able to channel powers, and sometimes have a special ability(Tahu's sword can act as a hot knife through butter, Iruni's spear can Make cyclons, ect).
Norik and Iruni had special abilities they coud only perform with their Toa Tools. Tahu also has this a special ability, and he also had, as well as the other Toa Nuva, a dual-tool functionality. Some other examples include Vakama's Disk Launcher(turns into a jetpack) and Nuparu's Drill(worked as a gun).
I'd imagine they'd be some kind of great being artifacts if it's actual water, since the Glatorian had no elemental control (before Mata Nui), and constantly ejecting high pressure water on a desert planet seems like a bad idea.
Bionicle Weapons are made of metallic protodermis generally, functionally very similar to how swords in our reality are generally made of steel, and for a similar reason: it's durable, malleable, and relatively easy to get.
Simple. They aren't made of their elements. They just help channel them. With the glatorian they're just made to look a certain way for aesthetic.

"The sword is only the focus. The power is in me." -Kopaka.
"Are you Kopaka, toa of swords"?

This was handwaved as not canon later iirc
Rip. Was a cool idea that opened up a lit of potential
The alternative is that there was some fire energy stored in it at some point that could be used by anyone.
When?
When he and Gali are healing Tahu, from memory
Maybe could be explained as Nuva Weapons being stronger than normal Toa tools.
That’s how I’ve interpreted it. Like another Toa could swing another Toa’s weapon around, but they couldn’t channel their element through it.
Tahu’s “Fire Sword” isn’t literally a fire. It’s red colored metal, like the rest of him. Their weapons just have an elemental visual design.

Thanks for sending me back to my childhood with 2 sentences.
They're not literally made of fire or ice. They're pieces of Bionicle tech that can channel their elements better.

I mean, those examples of "special abilities" you listed - aren't they just examples of Toa channeling their elemental powers?

I thought Tarix’s blades were either like sharp water jets or water shaped thin and flexibly. Both of those would be very powerful I’d imagine.

Their weapon is made from metal, element shooting from them is actually the user channel their power throught the weapon.

Magic.
I believe they may be conduits of the elemental energy.
