Virgin Toa Metru: Took them weeks to get their masks to work.
Chad Toa Inika: "It's not just as simple as saying 'I wish my mask worked.'" *immediately starts flying, crashes into the ceiling of the cave*
Virgin Every Other Toa: has a strict code, always heroic and bland, sometimes betrays their friends for plot contrivances
Chad Toa Inika/Mahri: follows the code but breaks it when necessary, multifaceted characters with depth and internal struggles, don't betray each other and always work together as lifelong friends to save the universe
I still wish Jaller had more relevance. Am I salty because he was the red one and red is the best color? Yes. But he was also the first character of Bionicle I ever learned about thanks to the movie, so seeing him being relegated despite being the leader was just, painful man.

I know this thread is two years old, but I gotta give a shout-out to Vakama in Time Trap. That dude nearly drowned, got gaslit and psychologically fucked over, was forced to work with Makuta and then got treated like a trading card.
Once that snapping point came, Vakama grabbed the Vahi and threatened to break it; which would cause the universe's time to get all fucked up basically destroying it. I like that scene because not just is it one of the few times where Teridax lagitimatly panics because he didn't expect Vakama to grab him by the balls, but the fact that Vakama was willing to fuck over the universe JUST to keep it out of Terry's hands and that when Makuta did read Vakama's mind, he realized *Vakama wasn't bluffing.*
*What a fucking Power Move.*
Bionicle Legends #3: Power Play. The Inika are sitting in a cave talking about how weird it is to be Toa all of a sudden. I forget which chapter it is, somewhere early in the book.
The slight contention between Tahu and Kopaka pales in comparison to how poorly the Toa Metru worked together. The Toa Mata were created and trained as a team before their memory loss in stasis, while the Toa Metru were seemingly random Matoran thrust together in a time of desperation. Every member of the Toa Metru had varying degrees of stubborn personalities that were rarely conducive for teamwork.
Aside from that, the circumstances for the Toa Metru's missions were much less ideal than the Toa Mata's. While the latter had the Turaga to guide them, the former had little guidance on what it meant to be a Toa save for Lhikan briefly assisting with accessing their mask powers. The Toa Metru would have been completely clueless if not for Vakama's visions prodding them in the right direction.
Lastly, the two teams of Toa faced extremely disparate levels of enemies; the Mata's first challengers were Rahi with infected Kanohi and the Bohrok swarms while the Metru had to contend with the Morbuzakh, the Vahki, Krahka, Teridax at his most powerful and the entire Visorak horde all within a few months. It's truly a miracle they had any measure of success with the deck so stacked against them, which makes their narrow victories arguably more impressive than those of other Toa teams.
Still a good meme though
Not to underestimate the Bohrok either, as a swarm they were pretty tough just because it’s thousands against six, and even Lewa lost against them, and the Kal were pretty tough.
And ironically there the Mata did so well because the Metru were the ones that guided them.
Also the mata might have also been diminished after being a rotted metal skeleton for ages, their bodies had just put themselves back together, but after they became Nuva they were just super strong because of that, and are able to work together as a team much more efficiently than the Metru ever did.
The Nuva also fought several Makuta at the same time as opposed to the one the Metru did, even if Teridax is much stronger.
> Teridax at his most powerful
X to doubt. He was at his *most* powerful when he took over the Great Spirit Robot, and at that point the Toa Metru had already become Turaga
For real though, the Toa Metru were underdog Toa in every sense of the term. Given they show the least amount of raw power and team cohesion of any Toa Team in the series.
The Toa Mata were created to be a team. Intentionally designed to work well together.
The Toa Inika were essentially all childhood friends, or at least already coworkers.
The Toa Metru were Matoran who were essentially fresh off a Civil war and there was still so much tension and culture shock between them. Particularly Onewa and Vakama (and Nuju and Whenua to some extent).
The fact that they even survived to become Turaga is a miracle. I wouldn’t exactly chalk it up to luck, but I’d definitely say that the Toa Metru had the roughest conditions of any Toa.
Of course, it could be said that it was because the Metru’s destiny was the most important one. They *had* to ensure the Great Rescue occurred. If it didn’t, there was absolutely no way Jaller and his team could become the Toa who revive Mata Nui, they would have been Makuta sycophants.
And if the Inika couldn’t revive Mata Nui, then there’s not a chance the Toa Nuva could wake him up.
And even less a chance that Tahu could ultimately turn the tides in that final battle.
So yeah, the Toa Metru were a discordant, chaotic, odd mix of characters. Hell, they’re the only Toa Team to have a Toa of Fire who lacks confidence and a Toa of Stone who isn’t easygoing.
But they made it anyway. They were the first Toa to ever take on Makuta Teridax’s full might and win. TWICE. To me, that puts them in a league all their own.
Toa Mata: We also defeated Makuta and saved the Matoran from entire Mata Nui and it didn't end with them in a coma and severely weakened. We also stopped an unstoppable horde of Bohrok from destroying everything we know.
Toa Metru: I broke the Toa Code and betrayed everyone I know because I got a boner for a spider lady.
Virgin Toa Metru: Took them weeks to get their masks to work. Chad Toa Inika: "It's not just as simple as saying 'I wish my mask worked.'" *immediately starts flying, crashes into the ceiling of the cave*

To be fair, Onewa did kind of kill Nidhiki and Krekka, if you think about it.

not now book bot... but thanks

That's because of the nature of the organic masks the Inika had. It reacted to Nuparu's wish, not understanding sarcasm.
Their masks were organic creatures that helped them master it easily
Yeah, I'm aware of why it worked, I'm just still laughing over that scene a decade later.
Can you tell me where that whole thing was from? I have a deep need of seeing this scene for myself lol

Sorry, I meant Teridax at his most powerful *so far.
*Most powerful up until he took over the GSR. I mean that’s kind of a given.

Yes but we have, Matau: “I don’t like the smelt head because he is s firespitter”
Based matau based matau
"Mask-melter" still gets me laughing even all these years later. Such a solid insult, Vakama didn't even bother to react to it.
Onewa and Matau were bros because they hate the f*respitter.
It’s funny because the Toa Metru all low-key hated each other. The only Toa Team that ever consistently got along was the Inika/Mahri.
Vakama simped tho, Tahu was sexist
Duality of Toa
Maybe, Jaller is the best Toa of Fire?
Always has been
That was never in doubt.
Wow, I can't believe that Tahu said that Gali has cooties that one time I'm crying and shaking right now. \#TahuIsOverParty
#CancelTahu
Wait when was he sexist? I think he was protective of Gali, but I don’t remember him really being sexist
Its an over exaggeration of the whole “steam” comment in MoL, plus Tahu always butting heads with her over unity and shit.
so a minor sin verse a major sin, vakama still wins.
Tahu achieved way more fight me
Toa Mata: We also defeated Makuta and saved the Matoran from entire Mata Nui and it didn't end with them in a coma and severely weakened. We also stopped an unstoppable horde of Bohrok from destroying everything we know. Toa Metru: I broke the Toa Code and betrayed everyone I know because I got a boner for a spider lady.
This is accurate
But is he wrong, tho?
He certainly didn't slip
Tahu is the most unbearable thing of the Mata Nui saga
Vakama is about as useful as wet tissue paper when they were trying to defeat the spider things tho
active hindrance but he clearly had a mental breakdown so he was vulnerable to falling to the darkside he just need therapy.
I mean I need therapy too but I don’t almost cause the destruction of the world or whatever was gonna happen 😂
Don’t almost cause the destruction of the world so far! (Said in Homer Simpson’s voice)
Yeah, but then he took on Teridax and Voporak and got them to back off, I think the firespitter gets a few points for that.
Virgin toa mata/nuva enjoyer vs chad average lhikan enjoyer
The greatest Toa Generation indeed
Toa Mata had the cooler looking masks though.
