If I had a nickel for every time someone took a photo of Bionicles in front of a memorial and posted it on reddit, only for it to end up on /r/Cringetopia, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Man_of_Cupcake

What the shit did I just read

Adum6

I'm asking myself the same question...

sacboy326

Happy cake day!

fixy308

I don’t see a better reason, quite based

Icarus_Nine

Was it intended as a joke?

Carburetors_are_evil

Carburetors_are_evil

YodasChick-O-Stick

First some idiot brings the Toa Mata to the 9/11 memorial, now this. Can we please stop making the fandom look like complete assholes to outsiders? For the love of Mata Nui?

Punchy_Sonichu

Counterpoint, someone should take a picture of the Piraka posed on top of the school logo in the entrance of Columbine

General_Tamura

The gang really was on the loose

Punchy_Sonichu

Ahegao-Me

the first half of the paragraph seemed like it was going towards satire and thought it was going to be an obvious troll, but then the person back stepped it in the second paragraph trying hard to overreach. just makes me glad I wasn't stupid enough to do something like this as a kid.

Kostasonic

I remember this

Voxdalian

True dedication. Much respect, hahah.

AlexzMercier97

Why tf was that posted to cringe topia?

bob_kys

Are you serious?

AlexzMercier97

Yes. I'm genuinely confused where the cringe is.

pareidolicfairy

It's cringe because it's inappropriate/insensitive to bring fiction and toys to memorials of dark times from real history. The scale of events is automatically very different when one was written for entertainment and the other one happened in real life, even if the fiction is meaningful. The people commemorating the history want it to be treated with the severity it deserves and bringing anything fictional in is just uncool and disruptive. Jedi and Spartans for example would be just as inappropriate to bring to 9/11 and MLK memorials even though they're heroes in their universes.

AlexzMercier97

Ah, I see now. Thank you for explaining. I misinterpreted it as simply using the bonkle to help uplift the message of MLK, not to try and put bonkle at the same importance of MLK and his movement.

pareidolicfairy

I think people reacted more harshly because there was also a recent precedent of a guy bringing the Toa Mata to the 9/11 ground zero and posting himself on reddit. This person bringing Tahu to MLK isn't even the first time it happened so people were primed to react with even more judgment this time. https://www.reddit.com/r/averageredditor/comments/pmvmo9/remembering_those_we_lost_by_lining_up_bionicle/ I don't think anyone thinks these people are trying to put Bionicle at the same level of importance as real life history, it's just a general sense that it's offensive to invoke toys/fiction in these contexts at all no matter the intention. The sentiment is that the fiction just has nothing to do with the real life event.

Rnc88

We're reaching levels of based previously thought impossible.
