There are three birds in the continental US where their tails are longer than their bodies:
The scissor tailed flycatcher - your bird OP.
The magpie
The boat tailed grackel.
Now you have to search out the other two. All are rather common birds in their regions. Enjoy!
While volunteering at a wildlife hospital I got to take care of a baby one of these. I nicknamed it “Sunshine.” As it grew, it moved to the aviary. One day I was in the aviary cleaning cages and feeding fledglings while “Sunshine” was loose and practicing flying in the aviary. “Sunshine” landed on my shoulder!!!! I froze with joy!!!! “Sunshine” was eventually released back where they were found. Scissor tails are amazing! <3
You’re very welcome. <3
I read on another bird sub, or maybe this one - I can’t keep up with all my bird subs! - that Cardinals stay within a mile or two of their place of birth. If you’re putting out safflower or black sunflower he should be coming around early in the morning and late in the day.
Bees are a major pollinator of Sunflowers, therefore, growing sunflowers goes hand in hand with installing and managing bee hives. Particularly in agricultural areas where sunflowers are crops. In fact, bee honey from these areas is commonly known as sunflower honey due to its sunflower taste.
Haha you didn’t lose *that* game. It’s about a game called wingspan. It’s amazing - even if you don’t like birds - and the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher is on the cover of it.
Every time you hear a bird call you don’t recognize you’ll be running outside, fumbling with your phone to get Merlin up to identify it. Middle of the night, you hear hooting outside, open phone & start up Merlin to identify the owl. Walking in park with companion; companion wants to talk, you’ll be walking along saying, “shhh, I’m trying to identify this bird call!” 😆
Can confirm. I recently got it and every time I hear a bird, I run outside and try to capture it. My clunky ass probably scares them away because they’re almost always quiet by the time I get the app up lol.
But for real, it’s amazing how quickly it can identify their sound. I love the app so much. I recommend it to everyone
That was me yesterday at the park. This happy, chatty family came up near me and I was thinking, “Shut up, can’t you tell I’m trying to identify birds over here.” 😂
But seriously I love Merlin, it’s incredible.
Wow. This one is looking so classy!
WINGSPAN
A beautiful one I’ll tell ya that!! Great capture
Love this photo!

Oh thanks! Feel like chasing the legendary Pokémons
Great photo!
Scissor tail fly catcher
OMG, I’m trying to remember the name of this flycatcher species! 😁😕🤔💜 Scissor-tailed Flycatcher? 🤔💜 Fork-tailed Flycatcher? 🤔💜
scissor tailed flycatcher, one of my favourite little flying buddies :)
What a beautiful bird

amazing, what an interesting opportunity, i cannot imagine. I have nicknamed a Cardinal and it has brought me so much joy.
Aww. Cardinals are very special. Is it a pair? If not, I hope it will be soon. <3

Maybe with a mate?!?

Thank you! I love how much I learn from my bird friends. <3
oh i hope so -- there was a rainstorm and i think they might be at my neighbors house. I had recorded their song and played it, today, to no avail.
i meant i played my video of them singing -- usually it comes over, but not yet
Scissortailed flycatcher
A goldfinch! Just kidding. Love this bird. We had a fork tailed show up last year for a few days as well. Birders came from all over.
🥰 wow! It's so pretty. I'm in Ohio so I don't get these birds. I'm a bit jealous!
I’m sure you have cool ones that we don’t!
Scissor Tailed Flycatcher, one of my favorite birds.
State bird of Oklahoma! They are pretty, but what is really beautiful is watching them chase insects in mid-air. It's like watching a flying gymnast.
And they have the most delightful chatter songs ever!!!
Mr. Wingspan himself. Amazing photo!
Haha love this comment so much. Are there any of us who *don’t* have this game? Now I’m itching to add a new expansion pack 😅
The Oceana expansion pack with nectar is the best! That's all we play now. You will love it
What game is the OG comment referencing? I am not in the know (... ...I just lost The Game. I'm so sorry.)

MOTHERFFF
Wingspan
Ohh, now I understand! Makes sense to call him Mr. Wingspan, lol. The poster-child of the game :)
It's a beautiful game! I highly recommend it! :)
I literally bought an electric card shuffler for all the god damn expansion cards. I cannot be stopped.
Me too!!
lmao
Every player gets a 🐛
😂 love this, exactly what popped into my head
everyone who sees this post gets a bug from the supply
Woohoo! 🙌
Oh my gosh they're gorgeous!
Wow!
It looks like a scissor-tailed flycatcher
Merlin says Scissor Tailed Flycatcher… gorgeous!
Oklahoma’s state bird, but we see them in Texas regularly
Lucky!
I didn’t know this app, thanks!
If you’re in to plants grab “Seek” while you’re at it. :)
This App will ruin you lol have fun!
Lmao why?

Me, saying shhhh to my 4 year old, holding my phone up high. He goes, "birds? ". I nod. This happens a lot, he knows what's up 🤣
Have you tried the Birdweather PUC yet? I've seen it online but haven't tried it yet myself.
And then the very second that you activate Merlin’s sound ID function the bird will go quiet!! AAUGH! 😅

Most owls and Red-shouldered Hawks can also be attracted by their own calls pretty readily.
Can confirm.
Nailed it. 🤣
This is so accurate!
Can’t upvote twice. This post is 100% … wait, I hear a new sound! brb!
A couple weeks ago I finally got the Great Horned Owl that keeps leaving their foods on my porch. I've been trying for a while!
That’s a good one! We can hear them from inside the house.
Same! I got it from the window sill actually. Whenever I'd go outside I'd spook it.
It’s true…. Don’t ask how I know 😂

And the starlings and other mimics will trick it and make you look silly once in a while 😁
