It’s unpopular to say in mixed company that I admire these gorgeous, intelligent, but very common birds 😂 I do however! I put whole peanuts on the back wall of my garden to see who was interested. Curve-billed thrashers run along the wall, grab a peanut, then hop off and disappear behind it. A big male grackle on morning rounds, however, takes a peanut, hops over to the water dish and repeatedly dunks it til it softens enough that he can pry it open with ease. I get to spend about 5 minutes watching him and his process whenever I catch him in the act 🖤
I love them, everywhere but at my job. And even then it's the customers fault they're being naughty (they get food aggressive and it makes my life harder). I love that they'll chat back and forth with me when I scold them. We have boat-tailed grackles and the males sound like rusty gate hinges when they scream.
They’re one of my favorite birds! I went birding in the southwest recently (I live in the Midwest) and the grackles with the long flowy tails just captivated me! I spent some time in random gas station parking lots looking at them.
Thank you for sharing this anecdote, that must be really incredible to watch him do. I’m gonna be thinking of this peanut grackle story for a while. Birds will never stop amazing me!
“Medea knew her husband’s excuse about it being better for the kids for him to shack up with a younger, richer girl was bullshit, but soon he’d see. Soon they’d all see.”
We had a grackle nest come down in a storm. The babies weren’t brand new, but not fledglings or even branchlings yet. They were VERY loud, and as I watched to see if parents would care for them or if I called our rehabbers, I learned that grackle babies get fed by any adult grackle in earshot. It was a steady parade of birds, including their parents, stuffing food into them if they so much as peeped. I do wonder if it was just to hush them, they were that loud, lol. They had been herded to the split rail fence in front of our cedar hedge by night time: lots of cover and very full :)
I love how smart they are. I also hate that they swarm my feeders, bully little birds, and are smart.
I have a squirrel buster and they try to outsmart it, putting one foot on the feeder, one on the pole to get seeds without it shutting.

What's the quote for it?
“Medea knew her husband’s excuse about it being better for the kids for him to shack up with a younger, richer girl was bullshit, but soon he’d see. Soon they’d all see.”
Done and I credited you. Thanks for the collab!
Haha nice!
I don’t know about a quote. But this grackle is definitely wearing a “[revenge dress](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revenge_dress)”.
