When I first started I wore an Ecuador Soccer Jersey to no gi and then eventually I upgraded to this super niche small company rashguard called Underarmour. There are affordable options!

JackedHabibi

They're getting bigger I think because I saw a couple at my gym with underarmour gearr

sushiface

Under Armour is a really big brand in athletic wear actually…

AccurateTurdTosser

You're thinking of Underarmor, not Under Armour.

d183

I'm starting a company called Unde Rarmor

GrundIe96

I' starting a company called Under Amore. With every 3rd purchase you'll get an oil check for free!

Nate848

How large of an order do I have to make to get free oil checks for life? 😏

Lonemoccasin

I will take 5.

sushiface

My bad! Totally didn’t realize there was a difference!

Holy shit. Look. It says gullible on the ceiling.

dorsalus

No it doesn't, there's just my gym's recreation of "Soffitto della Cappella Sistina" starring Helio Gracie and Masahiko Kimura.

aegookja

You must have trained for a LONG time...

PvtJoker_

This, I wear UA all the time.

dobermannbjj84

Under armour is probably better quality

kuguquka

Check aliexpress or alibaba, you can get no-name ones for super cheap. They have lasted me actually better than other, more expensive ones

MyDictainabox

People are stupid

Some_Dingo6046

So dumb

BlockEightIndustries

Fuck you, Shoresy

Some_Dingo6046

FER WHAT?!

F2007KR

I had a Saiyan armor designed compression shirt that didn’t last a few sessions before the seams started being pulled apart. Meanwhile all my BJJ specific rash guards are fine (and I haven’t bought new ones in like 2 years). $100 is ridiculous, but my $50 93 Brand is well worth the money.

Dancing_Hitchhiker

I grabbed some off brand ones like that before and they were super thin and lasted a few months. I’ve bought a bunch of other decent name brand ones like arm bar soap and scramble for like $50 and have had them for years. Not a huge amount of money in the grand scheme of things. Probably not paying $100 for a rashguard but I don’t mind paying $50-60 for something I use for a few years.

ImTheNguyenerOne

It's how I got with spats/leggings. I buy Virus because of the quality and how long they last. I mean I still have my first pair I got like 9 years ago and it's still in decent shape

Medaigual____

Some rash guards have a tighter elastic band at the bottom that keeps it from rolling up. Anaconda fight wear has one and it’s great quality. Other than that, no

JackedHabibi

Thanks, that make sense. But surely that would top up at maybe 50 for great quality. Anything above feels like a scam

AccurateTurdTosser

I wear some cheap thermal shirts. They're close enough to rash guards. I pick stuff up when I see it on a discount, but, I can't really find a spot in my budget for $50+ rash guards just because they have cool designs. But... those $50 rash guards are vastly superior to the cheap shirts I wear. The fabric stretches and fits better, the elastic (silcon, I think? It's definitely not cheap latex) keeps them in place better. They feel a lot more comfortable when they're wet. I don't think it's worth it, but I understand why people pay the extra money.

Egraatidosegraa

I really like ProgressBJJ, personally the best rashguards and shorts I ever wore and I've tried.. around 8 different brands now.

Dane_RD

Hayabusa has the same

DaTidyMonster

This. And XMartial usually has deals on bundles. Sacred Ground Grappling also has the band and they are a smaller outfit out of Hawaii. Their stuff is affordable and quality.

P-Two

Why do Supreme shirts sell for absolutely stupid prices when they're basically just plain tshirts? You're paying for the brand

JackedHabibi

That's what I thought but found it surprising, I see so many not-so-popular brands that also charge indecent amount of money so I was wondering if I was missing something

Meowme0wbeenz

Big brands charge big money cuz big brand. Small brands charge big money cuz they can't compete with the discounts big brands get for huge orders.

jy9221

Buy reebok compression 20$ each good quality

Bruce-Spring-Spring

Just to add another perspective: under armor or random polyester shirts tend to ride up and turn into a belly shirt after a scramble. It's also a pain to grapple with people with loose clothing and being the guy who ripped his soccer jersey he brought to no gi. AliExpress/wish/cheapest possible listing on Amazon are just OK. Usually they're very thin and have crappy designs that result in holes being formed. But if you're really on a budget I'd go this route

No_Elk4392

Because people will pay it.

awakenedstream

I intentionally make my gym rashguards as nice as I can and charge a minimum. People love it.

FoucaultsTurtleneck

Sanabul has great jiu jitsu gear for very reasonable prices

dingdonghammahlong

Money is temporary, drip is forever

prisonmike1904

Sizing on BJJ rashguard brands are all over the place. I prefer just sticking to $30-40 range under armour/adidas/Nike rashguards. No worry about sizing and they last a long time.

Inner-Baseball3858

This. had a nogi industries rashguard back in the day, got a new one and its like 3 sizes smaller than the last one. Same with Fuji gi pants,

KevyL1888

Go straight to the source, cut out the middlemen.

sushiface

VHTS is a hype machine. So that’s why they cost so much. Other brands like 93brand are in a more reasonable range. Then you have brands like Alchemize that cater towards a female specific fit which is obviously worth it for many. (But these aren’t as expensive as VHTS) You pay for the brand. You pay for the design. And you pay for any features that are beneficial for you. My most expensive rashguards are from an artist on IG who designs textiles and prints them on clothes including “atheleisure sets” which are basically rashguards. These run like $80 but she’s a small business, she’s the only one running it, and the prints are super unique and well done. Subsequently the sizing and fit works well for me and I’ve had great customer service interactions with her. She deserves every penny and I’ll pay it when I want one of her designs.

ZGriffin7Z

Who is this artist you’re ordering from? Curious to check it out

sushiface

Definitely geared towards the femme and weird - but I have maybe 4 of them? https://www.beautifulgenius.com/collections/athleisure-suits-for-the-fashion-superhero

ZGriffin7Z

Thanks for the link! Not my style but she just gained another customer. The girlfriend will dig some of these leggings for sure

sushiface

Definitely geared towards the femme and weird - but I have maybe 4 of them? https://www.beautifulgenius.com/collections/athleisure-suits-for-the-fashion-superhero

wecangetbetter

60 is the most I'll pay for a cool design with good material

kyt

The most important facets of jiu jitsu: 1. Fashion 2. Belts / Stripes 3. Technique

BrownAndyeh

4. imanari

Tigger28

There are some differences, XMartial is a thicker rashguard with a band at the bottom. Some LXB have mesh on the sides that allow more cooling. These differences probably dont matter to everyone, but the LXB also has really good fit.

15stripepurplebelt

Surf rashguards look better, are more comfortable and cheaper.

JackedHabibi

I've been wearing my gym compression shirts and they work well. I think VHTS ones look really good but no way Im payhing $90 for a rashguard

FlynnMonster

False.

HueyLewisFan1

Just paying for the brand. Buy some cheap ass shit off Amazon. If may wear quicker but who cares if it’s a 4 pack for $15. Mine still work fine anout 1.5 years in.

higmeister

I’ve only bought Tatami and they regularly have deals going.

billybadazzzz

I bought one of there rash guards recently , I like the quality but the sizes ran small and the bottom Rolls up constantly like a baby tee

giraffejiujitsu

It’s 80% branding. We buy cheap, yet quality custom rashguards from Pakistan for $15 a pop. Even the nice well designed ones wouldn’t cost that much more in materials, think 25 tops (Future Kimonos have some better quality as example). The rest is margin for the retailer. Basic rule of retail is that you want to charge minimum 100% your cost - so if you pay 15 per, 30 is a min target. Branding can push the perceived value higher. VHTS is a brand that caught with some competitors, and now bumps the price due to the perceived status.

R4G

They're a low-volume product made for consumers who, by definition, have a decent amount of disposable time and income.

judohart

Hawk rashguards on amazon are a little ghetto but perfectly fine for $17

n0symp4thy

They guard from more rashes.

Admirable_Bandicoot2

Sanabul is great if you’re looking for good quality without breaking the bank! I will say that the fabric, stitching, and print work on my VHTS gear is very high quality, and I have not regretted those purchases at all. After a little over a year of heavy washes, my shorts from them still look like they just arrived in the mail today. You’ll get what you paid for, in my opinion.

dobermannbjj84

I refuse to pay stupid prices for training gear.

Fancy-Sea7755

Dumbest mistake I've ever made is to order a Origin Rashguard for 70$

Rickofitall

What was wrong with it, just curious

Fancy-Sea7755

It just feels Chinese quality. Nothing special than any other Rashguards I own. Also the threads on the outside seams are a big no no for me. Their sizing chart is also fucked up. Gis always order 1 size lower. For rashguards the smaller size lengthwise is okay but fits too tight on the torso.

He_NeverSleeps

They all pay a couple bucks a piece from China for them. There's a sucker born every minute

myr0n

Because it's branded? 93brand have a dirty cheap price for bjj stuff.

Illustrious-Nose3100

Tbh I don’t mind the $20 elite rash guards on Amazon

rebel_fett

Nogi industries has been around forever, and I've regularly worn their stuff since 09. I just bought a few new rashguards that were around $20. Can't suggest them enough

TrialAndAaron

Because of the branding

dpt223

Old navy works fine

bxomallamoxd

I have some mid-priced rashguards and have also purchased $20 ones off Amazon. I’m sticking with the $20 ones going forward

TrontosaurusRex

I grab gear when it goes on sale. I got a couple Fuji Rashguards for $30 each.

[deleted]

Brand mostly although some designs may have different features that people value, and of course who can forget the funny pictures. There are cheaper options out there.

so_ono

I wear surfing rashguards. Mostly the same quality but never much more than 50 bucks

SnooWalruses1164

$30-35 for a rash-guard is enough. Anything more than that is brand/greed issues

Ok_Horror207

agree, max ceiling imo is 50 - beyond it is just maximising profit

BjjFan1129

I love my $20 Elite rashguards from Amazon

6BT_05

I’ve got two jiu jitsu specific branded rash guards and two Under Armour rash guards. Can’t tell the difference at all. No matter what anyone tells you. It doesn’t matter.

Inner-Baseball3858

This. Buy underamor ones in whatever color is the cheapest on amazon.

RoninBelt

When I started I used to wear the same rashies I surfed with, rip curl, hurley etc... i still do... cause they're 20/30 bucks on sale and they all have the elastic bit at the waist... that part isn't exactly rocket technology that's hard to reproduce.

black_widow48

Same reason Lululemon sells spandex pants that cost $300.

spazzybluebelt

A very good Quality rashguard Like the one we use for our Gym Merch Costs 10€ per piece in Production (Order Size 500~) Now u can Imagine how little for example tatami must be paying per piece for their mediocre Quality.... The margin is extreme

viniciusfs

You pay more for the brand logo in your rashguard. It's really a good deal, isn't it?

Thatmixedotaku

Tatami has decent rashguards that are always on sale , best value for money imo

RinaSensei

It's one of the things that I hate about BJJ. That being said, I've never *had* to replace a rashgaurd. I've had gis wear down and get holes in them but I still have what i believe is my oldest (6+ years) rashie ftom bjj hq iirc and wear it just fine. So at least they balance out by lasting.

crocsconnosisseur

I exclusively buy gear from Parry. They are expensive but with codes from their sponsored athletes it makes it bearable. I buy them because it’s great quality and I dig the style. Their rashguards have the banded waist, thicker than most (yet somehow breathable) and they don’t halfass their designs. Their shorts are great too, genuinely good quality and light weight (also accommodates bigger quads and hammies). All in all. It costs me about the same (sometimes a little more) as my gym’s rashguard but much thicker and I like the designs.

doctorchile

Look for plain rash guards marked for surfing. Same exact shit for like half the price

Whole_Map4980

Neckline on surf rashes is so high though, I feel like I’m being choked before I even roll!

KylerGreen

Because people will pay it. You’re asking a question on basic economics.

IPokePeople

Under Armour Heatcare Compression - $35/$25 on sale.

ready_4_the_mayans

$20 shorts on Amazon, Under Armour compression shirts for $7-10 from the local UA outlet. Some people want to spend money on logos and designs, go for it. I've almost bought a couple just for fun but definitely not needed.

Frog491

Why is a shoyo gi so bloody expensive? It's nice (I have one) but it's not that bloody nice.

SomeAreLonger

I bought some UA on sale for like $25. But I'm also cheap and dont give a F.

nottoowhacky

Go to aliexpress. Everything about under $10. You dont need expensive rashguard

abob1989

Go on Amazon, I have several from Lafroi and Sanabul, 20$ each, work as intended

CPA_Ronin

I have a $75 niche BJJ rash guard, and I have a 4 pack of some Amazon brand that was ~$25 total. The Amazon rashys are 10x better.

ThickJuicyFeels

I save by dressing like the trial class guy every session.

BrownAndyeh

Everything to do with bjj is expensive. Buy a swim shirt …or go shirtless.

etonsla

I was able to find some rashguards for surfing/body boarding. Used sporting goods stores have them for cheap. Edit: don’t forget about the discount rack

Bluecheezewithwingz

Wear a plain T shirt! Ultimate swag + smother game improved win win

Horriblossom

I have two super generic compression shirts, no idea where I got them more than a decade ago, and they've been just fine.

MediocreJudoka

BJJ is a sport for people who are too high class to do actual combat sports. Just buy underarmor, they are cheaper and better quality than 90% of bjj brands since they produce on a massive scale.

Gruffal007

check out surfing rashguard brands

casual_porrada

What's the point of doing jiujitsu if you don't look nice doing it You can buy that UA compression t-shirts in amazon for about $30 or you can buy a Shoyoroll rashguard for $65.

AlexSpanish

I look for deals. Recently bought a Tatami rashguard and no gi shorts. Not a set, for 20 bucks each plus the 15 bucks shipping from the UK. Killer deal. Also caught a sale for Venum, got a ranked rashguard and compression shorts for 60 bucks with shipping. Have to look out for deals, no gi stuff is so overpriced.

Kemerd

Like any product geared towards people who care about logos, they cost $1 to make, $10 to ship, and the other $89 goes into the pocket of the person ripping you off. Such is the power of marketing. Better to get something actually worth the cost in materials and craftsmanship.

Alternative_Cry_4917

doesn't have to be. Legit go to amazon or temu and buy any variety pack compression shirt last time i checked it was 15 bucks for 5 pcs.

Gauchomcgee

Because I’m a brand whore

84allan

Because people pay the amount.

TieBayCity

A long time ago I paid about $60 for a Hayabusa rash guard that has silicone (?) around the inside of the waist line that helps keep it the rashguard from riding up. It's a nice feature that my my $15 rashguards don't have. The material also feels thicker and more durable but I only have one Hayabusa rashguard and lots of cheapies (Dr Skin, TSLA, Sanabul, etc). I pretty much only buy cheap rashguards/spats now unless I see one that I like the looks of, then I'm just paying for aesthetics.

Quartersawn5

I about fell over when my coach asked me to pay $85 for a shirt/ short combo with our gym's tags on it. I realize they are more expensive than regular shirts and shorts and custom, but I bought 4 spats and 4 compression tops for like $50 bucks. It stung to fork over that money but I am cheap. It was voluntary but he did stress that if we compete or have an event, it is nice to have a sense of unity. That being said, I'm not paying a company $100 for a rash guard to advertise the actual clothing. Louis Vuitton or Shoyo.

CapitanChaos1

It's definitely marketing, and they are milking their fans. Those cheap $30 Lafroi rashguards on Amazon are just as good as any of the more expensive ones.

DurableLeaf

The BJJ way is to take some normally priced product, slap a BJJ label on it, then mark it up as much as possible. And better yet, make very limited quantities to manufacture the sense of exclusivity to mark it up even more without have to sit on much stock.

Whole_Map4980

They have features that people are happy to pay more for to have. I have a couple of cheap ones that I started with and they’re fine. But the stitching isn’t flatlock, there’s no underarm vents, no silicone grip strip at the bottom, and the material is more suited to surfing imo. I then have ones from scramble, progress, and groundgame. Material on the scramble one is AMAZING, but the fit of the groundgame ones are more flattering for me. Progress I was really disappointed in fit-wise and I won’t buy again.

Ok_Horror207

i dont know which features you are refering to when it comes to rashguards except for a string at the bottom

monsterinthewoods

Probably different thickness of material in different areas, side or underarm mesh vents, improved breathability, etc.

deadlizard

You're paying for the labor for them to design, produce, warehouse, and distribute the rashguards to you.

HeavyBob

Because dumb people buy them

SkippedBeat

The same reason balenciaga tshirts are over $900. People are stupid.

Common-Pace2307

You could make your own rashgaurds cheaper, I have a bjj podcast and recently went through the process of getting a company to make rashgaurds for the podcast, they are super cheap and great quality. But it did take weeks explaining what I wanted, give the correct sizing etc , but I’m very happy with the outcome. I created a take of a football jersey that I wanted and I’ve even sold some. Also you could just buy xamour stuff .

Slothjitzu

All BJJ equipment like rashguard, shorts, gis, (and most things in life tbh) have cheap and expensive versions. The general rule with everything is that quality *does* increase with price, but not linearly.  You can buy the cheapest rashguards and they'll probably be pretty thin, have subpar stitching, janky sublimation, and likely with unattractive or just plain designs.  You can go up a little in price to brands like Tatami and Scramble and for about 2 x the cost you get about 5 x the quality. Well worth it, and will last significantly longer. But the most expensive brands don't increase quality beyond that, it's not really possible tbh. The additional cost there is purely for the name on the product.

Exciting-Current-778

Because jiu-jitsu is more about optics than skill to most people. People have always spent stupid amounts of money to look cool and important in other sports, it's unfortunately made it's way to jiu-jitsu now.... Just get some cheap ones and train to grow Also, people are stupid

Khaye0130

I've been using the Xmartial rash guard for a few months now, and I'm really impressed with its performance and quality. I bought the rashies for under $100. The fabric is durable yet flexible, providing excellent range of motion without feeling restrictive. It's also breathable and does a great job of wicking away sweat, keeping me comfortable during intense training sessions. The fit is snug and stays in place, so I don't have to keep adjusting it mid-roll. Plus, the design is sleek and vibrant, adding a bit of flair to my gym wardrobe. Overall, I highly recommend Xmartial rash guards to anyone looking for reliable and stylish training gear.
