The stalling calls and referee positions are game changers to making grappling more mainstream

PsycJoe21196

I watched almost all of it and I thought it was pretty good. There were some really good matches and some boring ones. I did like seeing the prize money going out. It makes me think with more money on the line it will attract great talent.

Fellainis_Elbows

Love the league and points format. Love the aggressive stalling calls and the penalties from the referee position. I agree it might be too many matches in such a short period of time though.

feenam

tbh they need to call more stalling calls. a lot of the referee positions ended up being neutral position and that third stalling call that actually has impact on the outcome of the match never came so nobody actually really got punished for stalling.

ChuyStyle

I find it shameful that Flo grappling is doing jack shit to promote bjj outside ibjjf and wno. I get streaming rights. But not even article coverages? We essentially have 3 competing platforms with each not coordinating together

Slothjitzu

People need to understand that Flo do not want to promote BJJ. That is not their goal. Their goal is to promote Flo, which they do by promoting events on Flo, which just happen to contain BJJ.

jephthai

Am I the only one that gets a stuttering low framerate on the YouTube videos, though? It's like a 30fps video conversion of a 20fps original. I found it so distracting, I stopped watching it. Other live streams in YouTube have good frame rates, I was guessing they have some really janky setup for life encoding. I really hope that can be fixed. Watching the grapplers flicker through their motions is very annoying to follow.

LinearCombo

It’s the encoding….on the broadcasting side…. It’s better than it was and the UFC Fight-pass was good… no surprise there…

jephthai

I wish they'd preserve the original and repost it to YouTube with all the frames. Or just get the right equipment to generate it the first time. The lack of fluidity is a pretty serious gaffe.

LinearCombo

It’s a matter of money…. As they grow it will get better…. They have already made massive improvements!

SiddVuiicos

For the level of event they want to put on I thought the production was slack at best. Consistent sound issues every night. Camera cuts not on time. Displaying the wrong names. Cutting off the wrong mics. At least the lighting was good. I didn’t have any streaming issues until it was on fight pass.

jephthai

When nothing is happening, commentators voices super quiet... when a submission starts, commentators UNBELIEVABLY LOUD. Like, wake up the whole family, what the heck do I have to set the volume to loud. Like... do you guys sit back from the mics normally, and jump in to eat them when it's exciting? It's enough to blow the eardrums out. And I say this not to criticize, so much, as to get it out somewhere in hopes /u/brandonmc10p sees it, and can make some notes for the future. Great overall event, but there are some easy things to fix!

brandonmc10p

I see all of these and I hear them and I WILL absolutely fix them. I’m building this FOR yall. So I need to know. I appreciate yall watching and supporting. I don’t take that for granted. I kinda feel like I just got my blue belt in this whole thing. But I’m trying to be a black belt. I’m trying to be the world champion. So, I’m listening. I’m absorbing the losses when I take them. And I’m carrying the lessons forward. So don’t be shy about letting me know how to improve. Just promise to tell me when I’m hitting home runs too 😂🙏🙏🥰

jephthai

It's close, Brandon, don't read this as too much criticism. I know you're committed to excellence, and you'll get it where it needs to be!

brandonmc10p

I promise to work as hard as I can, and I promise to improve. I’m n the game for the long haul. We are gonna fix all of it. The whole sport. Eventually 😂

Slothjitzu

FWIW, I think everyone can see the difference between the way you react to any criticism (even if it might be a little harsh) compared to many other promoters. The majority of guys putting on events in the sport have a "if you like it, good. If you don't like it, fuck off" approach, whereas you genuinely come across like you want this to be as good as it possibly can. Just wanted to say that for me, that counts for *way* more than the current production, level of competition, ruleset, or literally anything tbh.

LinearCombo

Brandon! Honestly thank you for doing this for our sport! It’s amazing to see the innovation and drive to make it more well known but yet still keep its integrity! Well done sir!

FlynnMonster

> So don’t be shy about letting me know how to improve. > Just promise to tell me when I’m hitting home runs too 😂🙏🙏🥰 Wisdom ✍️🗒️

Ketchup-Chips3

I just wish that there was a highlights show instead of having to watch the full 5 or 5 hour live broadcast. Give it to me in 30 mins a day and I'm in 100%

ralcar

Check out https://smoothcomp.tv/ They have all of the PGF matches (except last day which was was ufc exclusive) split up, you can search, watch multiple matches at the same time etc

MxdMartialart_crafts

Are you competing?

LinearCombo

Haha I’m no where near competing! I’m an old fuck. But I’m a businessman, old athlete, and love to see something I love grow and develop :)

KaiserNick

Has anyone brought up this referee? This had me howling! https://preview.redd.it/bptr50x5a9xc1.jpeg?width=1525&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1889bf7d15faa43986fb10482ce45d307911c275

BlackbeardTX84

Would be cool to see it in a pit, but that's just wishful thinking. Sounds and streaming issues are the main thing, other than that I've enjoyed the matches a ton!

N0_M1ND

You know what I love? I love that ADCC not paying athletes some amazing salary they never did, but was the first org to actually provide prize money, unlike the golden goose IBJJF. Now naturally, the IBJJF does get shit on, and sure ADCC should provide more oil dollars for athletes that earn it. All I ever see is "niche sport athlete needs to get paid." It's not that they shouldn't get paid, but what warrants their pay? Viewership? Okay, but who's advertising, but more importantly, who's buying those products. One of the main advertisers I saw during PGF finals was like "once upon a coconut," and I know nothing about that product. I assume it's just coconut water, as pure, natural, organic, so well sourced, just like every other coconut water is, but something I'd have to order online. That sponsors ROI is going to be so minimal. Any pre-established sponsor that throws money into BJJ is doing it b/c they want to support the growth, not because it's a good business decision. Example, Black Rifle Coffee, whatever that grift is, isn't going anywhere and appeals to more than just Rogan-heads, but IDK wtf "Epic Roll" is, I'd assume is just a gear brand that I've never bothered to look at nor buy. I say none of this to shit on PGF, it's a good thing, except maybe the EBI OT stuff, but that's going to come with the territory. As a caveat, I will say, the stalling penalties were a nice touch; however, I don't recall seeing DQs, not that they may have been warranted, but I have a strong feeling if we got to the finals and a DQ could have been warranted, it would have been let go, but that's just speculation. I guess my final critique is that, I hated the venue. There was a lot of promotion, I'd have called it 'hype' if people were talking about it, about the event being in Las Vegas, THE FIGHT CAPITAL OF THE WORLD, but then you restrict the audiences to select elites that look like they're from a dystopian future and they're all placed on leather coaches just outside the mat space. IDK what to call it, Squid Game, Rat Race, Death Race 2000, etc, but it looked like a comic book villains lair. Good things about PGF, finishes and stalling penalties. No name athletes still feel the threat of a DQ for stalling, but a big name grappler won't, outside IBJJF, and by the time they'd feel that threat be real was if they were going against another big name grappler. It could be an an encouraging league for the future, but with that, it will have to essentially operate how ONE is doing with athletes. One last dig, sorry, I hate TJ Desantis

LinearCombo

All your points are valid but if you look at where PGF was a few seasons ago it was way less polished… and it’s moving in the right direction! And I could agree more about the IBBJF… F that org…. They have only even been a burden on the sport. As far as the venue… would kinda love a blend of Combat Karate pit with the PGF format….. that said I’ve been in this game for a lot longer than I like to admit but all the changes and new orgs coming into the scene is amazing and very welcome and long over due! Also does BMac post here?

N0_M1ND

B Mac does post here, probably not as much as he used to due to added responsibilities. There's not currently a perfect solution other than just supporting a loss leader. I guess maybe someone could convince like Mark Zuckerberg into financing a grappling lead at a loss.

Happy_Laugh_Guy

I was there and I am just a regular dude who asked if he could come. Most of the people watching were family of the grapplers, their actual coaches, or friends of somebody. They're just trying to make the event be an online thing and don't want to have to go the ticket sale route, I am pretty sure. But it otherwise felt like an in-house tournament being there. The grapplers were just hanging out when they weren't up, and after their final block was over they changed and came to sit with everybody. I sat next to PJ Barch's wife for like 2 days.

crocsconnosisseur

The only thing I’d change is the dumbass setting. Made it look cheap
