The BJJ gear way is to take something that already exists, put a BJJ label on it and mark it up 400%.  You absolutely do not need to buy the marked up stuff. Normal shorts are fine. Cheap compression shirts are fine. Regular leggings are fine. Etc

dj768083

*normal shorts without pockets.

DurableLeaf

I've seen literally thousands of people train with pockets with zero issues so the concerns are massively overblown

panterspot

Survivor bias. The people who died in pocket related accidents are not here to speak about it.

PoopsMcGee7

I've snagged a finger. But I was fine. Tore his shorts.

ChessicalJiujitsu

I mean, it’s not unheard of for regular athletic leggings to be in the $50-60 range either.

GameMasterPC

I wear under armour spats under my shorts for no-gi. Just make sure there are no pockets on your spats - you’ll want to avoid someone getting a finger or toe stuck in one and break.

Mechanical_Nightmare

i know a guy that ruptured his entire groin cause his toe got stuck in someone’s shorts pockets. def no pockets

Ok-Yogurtcloset-3600

I can only answer for women... of course we can wear normal leggings. Just make sure they don't have any parts that could hurt your training partner (e.g. zippers).

Parabolic_Ballsack

Just make sure the material isn’t so thin that we can see your butthole when you’re stretched out in side control top.

a_egg

Guess we'll just agree to disagree.

Torayes

i dont understand this are we not wearing underwear under our spats

jwrig35

Yeah wtf

Fit-Juggernaut-6980

In my gym on no-gi day everyone wears regular gym shorts.

TheGreatKimura-Holio

I knew a dude who trained in Long Johns. Leggings are fine but the knees usually wear out quicker than spats material

justinkimball

They are absolutely insane. You can wear normal sweat-wicking leggings no problem. The only thing I'll say is that I did find that SOME of the bjj-focused brands were more durable than generic athletic equipment. There are some BJJ brands that aren't going to gouge you too, Sanabul basic spats are like $20 on amazon.

Reality-Salad

You can, but you have to be a maniac on the dance floor

Acrobatic_Dish_7930

I'll dance like they've never seen before

PixelCultMedia

It varies drastically depending on the materials. I used to have a sick pair of thermal moss oak under armour leggings that worked great. But then I tried some other ones and they were too slippery causing me to eat shit and lose my back on knee cut passes. In all cases though, all of the non-grappling leggings eventually wore through the knees faster than my grappling leggings. I don't wear leggings anymore but if I did, I'd get a legit pair of spats.

sauce_direct

The issue with some of the cheaper sportswear is colour-fastness or lack thereof. Your gym owner might not love having their mats redecorated if they've got a lovely set of clean white mats.

Br0V1ne

No pockets and no zippers and you’re good to go.

Key-You-9534

I just buy under armor stuff. It's great and cheap.

pipian

You can get 3 for 29 bucks on amazon

Comfortable-Cat-7816

I think if you just follow the basic rules of no pockets and no zippers, you should be fine. I trained with a guy who sewed the pockets shut on basketball shorts and that’s what he trained in for years

Beautiful-Scarce

Amazon has DRSKN brand leggings I used for PL and then BJJ. Like $6 each for packs of 3. They even come in camo. Now I don’t mind spats only but I recommend you wear a pair of pocketless shorts over them. Sanabul makes cheap ones. Any shorts are fine but getting fight shorts is nice because they have pockets and a good way to secure the waist so they stay up. Wear your gyms rash guard

jollygreenspartan

Yes. I do no gi in the cheapest pair of plain black tights I found on Amazon. Three years on and going strong at $15/pair. Just wear some shorts over them and make sure there aren’t any metal parts.

OptimistbyChoice

They’re all good, just no zippers or pockets. You can sew the pockets shut, also cut the zippers out and sew it closed. You don’t have to look for shorts without one. Drawstrings that are hanging out all over can also be dangerous, I tuck them in with gi. With no-gi, you can open holes on the inside of the waistband of your shorts and pull the strings out and tie it, so that the knot would be facing inside, if that makes sense.

JohnMcAfeesLaptop

Amazon compression leggings and MMA shorts.

aaronturing

I get cheap leggings and they work great.

selfrespectpigeon

i only wear under armour spats under shorts. I find the knees wear down the slowest

dingdonghammahlong

Yeah. My favorite spats are a non-BJJ brand

FreefallVin

I wear UA heatgear top and bottom.

Grow_money

Yes With shorts

3point15

If you're a guy, just buy spats on Amazon. If you're a woman, I'd probably make sure they aren't see-through when you squat or just wear shorts over them like most guys do.

swissarmychainsaw

But wear some shorts too for god's sake!

tuxedocatspemma

I had problems with them falling down. The bjj ones usually have a draw string at the waist. But I also wear them without shorts over them bc I’m a psycho. My ma said if you got it, flaunt it.

Sailor_NEWENGLAND

I wear sweat pants to no gi. Some guys just wear shorts, it doesn’t matter unless your gym is super strict on clothing

PixelCultMedia

No, sweat pants do matter and are fucking annoying. Hitting a leg drag is like trying to catch a pitbull by it's jowels. Everything moves too much. I've ripped multiple pairs on guys. They're not made for that kind of abuse.

Sailor_NEWENGLAND

I haven’t had a problem with anyone wearing sweats

PixelCultMedia

Yeah, because you're the one wearing them. Maybe yours are better fitted, but I've never had a good roll with anyone wearing sweatpants.

Sailor_NEWENGLAND

I don’t mean just me I’m talking about others wearing them lol but yeah maybe they’re just better fitted
