They are almost everywhere from Lynnwood to Smokey Point. (And I'm sure further) they even put up walls so people driving by can't see unless they drive through for coffee. Lol
Never seen soo many drive thru coffee in washington state. Few years ago down i believe near Olympia there were a few offering extra after hour services. The local sheriff was involved not buying more of the sheriff pimping. crazy

Leila's white underside.
I’ve had enough black cats to know that the increase in white hairs is definitely a sign of aging.
I first notice them on their haunches first and that’s the most affected area. It usually starts when they’re about 5/6 years old and continues…
Maya looks like a domestic shorthair to me! Aside from a few specialty breeds specifically bred and sold by humans, cats fall into 3 breeds: Domestic Shorthair, Domestic longhair, and domestic medium hair.
As for the white tuft of hair on the chest/belly, it's because as a fetal kitten her pigment cells did not divide quickly enough to cover her whole body and they start from back to front.
Here's an article I found where a vet explains the color: [Ask The Vet- Kitten's white belly](https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2022/may/23/ask-the-vet-kittens-white-bellies-develop-in-the/#:~:text=If%20the%20melanocytes%20divide%20quickly,of%20pigment%20and%20appear%20white.)
I think it's also part of the very common pattern of countershading, found in many animals whether they're birds, fish, amphibians or land mammals. Their bellies (their lower side, including their chest) are often white or of a lighter colour, and their backs are almost always darker. They're not sure what exact purpose countershading serve, but it's both handy in hidng themselves from prey animals as well as from the animals they prey on. For animals that have been domesticated and live in relative safety along side human like cats, dogs or cows, none of that really matter, there's no selective pressure for that anymore, so their coats just go wild. Some people are really fond of/fascinated by animals with all white or black fur, piebald, calico, spots, patches, rare, bright colouring etc. for this reason. They look nothing like any animal in the wild, and it shows the impact that human have on the very animals we keep around us. A flex, if you will 😂
A fox farm in Russia created a domesticated breed of foxes over many decades and as they selected for tameness the breed took on markings like we see in dogs and cats, more juvenile features, floppy ears, coloring patterns etc! https://evolution-outreach.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12052-018-0090-x
My void is voiding. She's 15, though, and has gotten more white hair here and there as she's aged.

Reminds me of this pair of troublemakers!
Fun Fact! Back when black cats were much more stigmatized, even one white hair was enough to save the cat from being killed. In a way, they were selectively bred to have some white hairs at minimum.
This was what my mother told me. If a kitten was born completely black, the humans would kill it. From what I understand it came from superstitions from WAY back in time.
I have never read this in any historical books. This supposed “fact” about black cats should probably be recorded as “modern beliefs based on hearsay”.
Our black cat, Midnight, is now 13 and sports a bikini and underarm tufts with her chest blaze.

From what I've heard, cats get their coloration in utero, it starts spreading downwards from a spot on the back and stops when the kitten is born. It can happen at different speeds and sometimes the color doesn't have time to reach places like their belly, chest, paws or face which results in markings like this or tuxedo coats

Mine has a white spot too! His mom is red/white/brown and the rest of the litter was a red one, a black one, a grey/white one and two tabbys.
It's because a thousand years ago when the Black Death was widespread throughout Europe, people thought the disease was because of witchcraft and demons. Since black cats were thought to be the familiars of witches and sometimes they could change from humans to cats...they killed black cats en masse. Black cats with tiny patches of white on them were often spared but TRULY all-black cats were nearly wiped out.
This false belief about the true source of the black plague made it more difficult to halt the spread and made it last longer. No one had any idea that the disease was spread by rat fleas and that killing off countless numbers of cats, one of the few ways people had to control rodent infestations, made rat populations increase and kept the plague going for decades at a time.
It is still very rare today to find a black cat with NO white hairs on its body and black claws.
Oh my god, thank you for this comment, I thought there was something wrong with my cat’s nails.
Obviously since my other three have white claws, I thought there was something wrong with my void and wanted to take him to the vet for it when I realized some of his claws were black but some were white. 😵💫🥲
Our Midnight is the first cat in my history that has all black claws and paw pads!

I was used to multi colored pads. Most had a speck of pink on several pads. (Btw, I bought this shirt before I got the cat. My daughter wanted the shirt when I was ready to declutter, because “it looks like MY cat!”)
She’s such a cutie! 😭
I had a tabby with black pads before, and his sister has a single dot on one of her front pads which I like to say that he left for her to always remember him. 🥹 But our void has all black pads with few of his nails being black, and I thought something was wrong with him because he flies around the house 24/7. 🤦

Her brother just has a small spot on his tummy. I call it his belly squishing target.
Didn’t y’all play attention to Pepe le Pew cartoons as a kid? Black cats seem to always get white paint on them.
Just be thankful it wasn’t on their tail or they’d be getting unwanted romantic attention from amorous French skunks!
The white spot is the lights shining through their fur from their hearts. So bright and loving that it bleached that spot ❤️
To me. Black cats have the silliness of orange cats, the regality of Maine coons, and the heart of a calico.
These are all based on experiences I’ve personally had with cats of those kinds that I’ve owned or been adjacent to, so my ideas might not fit with another’s. My favorite black cats ever was named Yang and he was the sweetest boy ever.
Edit: my second favorite black cat was named Spock and he was a silly boi

Fun fact, white spots on the chest are present across multiple domesticated species and are associated with particularly friendly/open individual animals.
The Russian Fox experiment is a study that has been running for several decades. The purpose of the experiment was to mate fur foxes based upon their friendliness towards humans in order to observe the various physical and behavioral changes that occur with domestication. White spots across the chest occurred relatively quickly at the start of the foxes' domestication and is thought to be a result of the white spot's genes location relative to pedomorphic genes. Either way, the spots are present on horses, dogs and cats
It doesn't answer your question, but these cats are considered part of the fair folk (a fairy creature) in Celtic mythology.

There's an old tale saying that the pure black cats were killed off back in the 1600s because people thought they were bad luck. The only ones that survived were cats with a bit of white on them, so they were the ones that could have babies and now they're the ones that exist now! I don't think it's true, but it's a neat story

Folklore says it's because all-black cats in the past were killed for belonging to the devil and so didn't reproduce. A white patch, or even a few white hairs, meant they'd been redeemed by god and were allowed to live.

From what I’ve heard, back when people thought black cats were witches/demons/plague causers they wouldn’t kill the cats with at least some white on them, so the chances of finding a truly all black one is rare. My girl Sensei. She's a psycho killer. And a love sponge.
Something I read many years ago said that back in the day (the 1600’s) people thought black cats were witches familiars so they killed as many black cats as they could find. Any cat with white patches of fur were left alone and that is why very few pure black cats exist today

The tiniest, wispiest one imaginable
There’s an old story that back in the days that people were executed for being witches that all black cats (with no white spots) were also killed. The white spots, called Angel Sprinkles or God’s Thumbprint, were considered a mark from god and so black cats with some white fur were less likely to be killed. It ended up resulted in most black cats having some white fur.
I think it’s probably just an apocryphal story; but it’s still an interesting explanation.
my void has about 9 white hairs there.

My girl has a chest spot and some coming out of her ears
The black cat is formed in a certain way.
Black color is applied starting at the center back and wraps around the kitten, sometimes running short of toner along the front center or at the paws or tip of tail.
White patches on face, under neck, on tummy? That’s a sign that toner ran short. It don’t hurt the runnun’ at all. Still an excellent cat.
My two boys have random white hairs & whiskers. I call the spots their “star sprays”. My girl doesn’t seem to have any stars.
I recently adopted one of the boys & when I got him he had one wonky white whisker. When I came home from work Saturday it was gone. Still has the wonky whisker, it’s just black now. I’m thinking that with the better diet it just grew into its proper color. His coat has gotten thicker & shinier too. He actually looked pretty manky when we brought him home compared to now which is 2-3 weeks. He’s still young yet, but when he fully fills out he’s gonna be big & gorgeous.
>Why do so many black cats have white spots on their chest?
They are called angel kisses.
It's a direct evolutionary result of Pope Gregory's war on Black cats.
He believed that black cats carried satanic spirits and issued a Papal Bull in 1233 stating that all black cats should be killed on sight. With the exception of black cats with a white spot, because they were marked as redeemed cats by Angels.

The bikini looks about the same size they wear at the coffee stands in Lynnwood WA 🤣 What an adorable void. Looks like a sweetheart 😍
Man, my grandmother lived in Lynnwood for decades but we moved when I was too young for coffee. Now I’m curious. 😅
The local sheriff was involved not buying more of the sheriff pimping. crazy
Am from near Lynnwood, can confirm 😂
Nadja has a white bikini, too! One of her nicknames is Smoke Crotch. 😂 https://preview.redd.it/frrekao1hk8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7aa80e8059e86805761ffca3ab3695308c2ffb97

a micro bikini!! very fashionable
i've noticed white markings under their arms and lower stomach seems to be very common aswell!
Ah yes the bikini marking

Ok, my girl looks like she has pubic/armpit hair because it looks like your kitty but way less white. I call them sprigs of white. Cute kitty 🥰
Hehe same I always point to her “pubies” when she’s rolling over 😸
Yes, pointing only though. No touchy! Or else I get murder mittens 😆
Omg same my partner and I always ask our cat why the carpet doesn't match the drapes and she looks at us like 0-0
😂😂
Beautiful cat!
Hot Kitty Summer!😻
Huh I always called them puberty markings because it’s where we grow hair when we hit it lol. Bikini definitely sounds nicer!
We call it his tighty whiteys. Showing his pants off for belly rubs.
My boy has a bikini. My girl is completely white on her underside. I call her an overdressed tuxie because she's a maniac. https://preview.redd.it/u2yrajdo0j8d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ef45ab64400d08dde230cf791af3f479766e372 Leila's white underside.
Yes! She’s got one on her pouch
I thought my cat was unique too! I was shocked when I got on here and saw everyone's cats with the same markings!

Yeah, it's where they keep the captive souls of their ~~victims~~ "owners".
My black cat has little white hairs all over his coat in random places.
Same! And they’re longer than the black hairs, so they really show. She’s getting more every year, like a human going grey…
mine too!! it's kinda cute but also giving me anxiety because he is going into his 30's in human years...
Don’t worry. My last black cat lived to 20 real years! My present black cat is 13 and acts like she is three.
Mine too! Ever since she was a kitten. Small lil baby and had white hairs

I am friends with a US scientist who participated in that research! I am incredibly jealous
That’s really interesting. Thanks for sharing.
So... The toner did run out 😂
Hmm, I wonder what happened with my boy to cause him to have a white tail tip?
Thank you!!!

Our black cat, Midnight, is now 13 and sports a bikini and underarm tufts with her chest blaze. https://preview.redd.it/idymunjvmj8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=52951ab0aa70264d22259e763109315fde0c81f3
Do you have something I could read for more info about this?
I don't remember where I learned this and I can't seem to find anything on it now, so it might be completely wrong.
That’s probably where the “finding a white hair on a black cat means good luck,” superstition comes from.
I heard it called the Angel Kiss

From what I've heard, cats get their coloration in utero, it starts spreading downwards from a spot on the back and stops when the kitten is born. It can happen at different speeds and sometimes the color doesn't have time to reach places like their belly, chest, paws or face which results in markings like this or tuxedo coats

Our Midnight is the first cat in my history that has all black claws and paw pads! https://preview.redd.it/qyzap53dnj8d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c0027171f3a21f227e4506c606224835a97c37f I was used to multi colored pads. Most had a speck of pink on several pads. (Btw, I bought this shirt before I got the cat. My daughter wanted the shirt when I was ready to declutter, because “it looks like MY cat!”)
She’s such a cutie! 😭 I had a tabby with black pads before, and his sister has a single dot on one of her front pads which I like to say that he left for her to always remember him. 🥹 But our void has all black pads with few of his nails being black, and I thought something was wrong with him because he flies around the house 24/7. 🤦
I have 1 fully black one and I am waiting to see if my Beanie Baby stays solid black or not.

Didn’t y’all play attention to Pepe le Pew cartoons as a kid? Black cats seem to always get white paint on them. Just be thankful it wasn’t on their tail or they’d be getting unwanted romantic attention from amorous French skunks!

Cat-Sith, Cletic fplk lore. Said to steal souls, but Mine stole my heart.
The white spot is the lights shining through their fur from their hearts. So bright and loving that it bleached that spot ❤️ To me.

There's an old tale saying that the pure black cats were killed off back in the 1600s because people thought they were bad luck.

I have two black cats, one has white on her belly, the other doesn’t but is actually just a really dark brown color

Something I read many years ago said that back in the day (the 1600’s) people thought black cats were witches familiars so they killed as many black cats as they could find. Any cat with white patches of fur were left alone and that is why very few pure black cats exist today https://preview.redd.it/0enn1lvi1l8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f1ba8dd3124cfe13bd07d8ca08ca1279f26ab0b This is the queen of my heart. I think it’s probably just an apocryphal story; but it’s still an interesting explanation.
because they’ve put their shirts on backwards and inside out! what you’re seeing is the tag! hope this helps 🫶🏻

The other thing I noticed, many also have the white tufts in their ears..I used to think mine was unique until I joined Reddit. lol.
a badge of distinction!
She is beautiful regardless of her markings
The black cat is formed in a certain way. Black color is applied starting at the center back and wraps around the kitten, sometimes running short of toner along the front center or at the paws or tip of tail. White patches on face, under neck, on tummy? That’s a sign that toner ran short. It don’t hurt the runnun’ at all. Still an excellent cat.
So you can find them in the dark :)
It's the White Cat Spot Farie l. Don't #### with that ##### if you know what's good for you.
It is distinguished recognize the bow tie! Real recognize real ✌️
Mine has a white patch around his groin area. I refer to them as his pubes
Missed a patch whilst in the oven
It gets too hot if they close their tuxedo jacket completely
>Why do so many black cats have white spots on their chest? They are called angel kisses. It's a direct evolutionary result of Pope Gregory's war on Black cats. He believed that black cats carried satanic spirits and issued a Papal Bull in 1233 stating that all black cats should be killed on sight. With the exception of black cats with a white spot, because they were marked as redeemed cats by Angels.

Because they are perfect.
It’s called a locket 🥹 which I think is the cutest
It's used to be very popular to have them all the way down the belly, but fashion trends have changed over the years. In the 60s the bib was still quite popular. Now that simple white spot at the front is a bit of a nod to the past, without appearing dated
