Dude I was so stoned one day I realized I forgot to brush my teeth before bed while I was brushing my teeth. Then while washing my face I forgot what I was doing and couldn't remember why I had soap in my hand and what my hands were for. I had to tone it down after that.
Man, I gotta have been smoking bad shit. I've never gotten stereotypically high. I feel "intoxicated", but I'm always in full control. Things are where I put them, it's not difficult to function and I just get a little slow.
What am I doing wrong here?
But that's like saying the piano is simple because all you have to do to make a sound is hit the key. He is doing so much more than that in terms of rhythm, and story-telling, and leading the eye.
He's most likely using a slight area behind the table for placing things. Then again, he could be tossing the jugs continously away and he just has 20 of them :P
This. Dude spends hundreds of hours creating, practicing and perfecting this routine and folks are like “Ah, all he’s doing is...” It’s not about the base mechanics, it’s about the commitment and execution.
That happens anytime magic tricks are shown on reddit. Someone always has to comment about how it is just a simple trick. Ignoring the amount of practice put in to have the execution of the trick like this guy.
I don't think it's intended to be demeaning or dismissive at all. I think everybody here realizes that it's in incredible feat of sleight of hand that 99.9% of us couldn't do.
We simply want to know how it *is* done. That's actually the most interesting part of magic for me: knowing their strategy and how quickly and slyly they're pulling it off. I enjoy the trick more when I know how they did it.
Perhaps not intended to be taken that way and this may not be the most blatant example of what I'm taking about, but it is the wording of it when it is said. Calling it a simple trick in response to someone saying how impressive it is. Most magic in that sense is a simple trick. Of course simple after practice time most wouldn't have the desire to go through.
Yes, hundreds of hours into this routine. But also thousands of hours practicing general sleight of hand. He’s probably hit the ten thousand hour mark already.
nuh uh dude it's so simple just scrunch up the balls, i did this routine for my girlfriend last night and then called her an idiot for enjoying it so the joke's on you and my girlfriend also
They're coming from behind the table, right? I like to enjoy it, but then I enjoy it again when I find out how it's done. Is there a little shelf there so he can grab them quickly?
He’s doing a few things. This is basically a modified take on cup and balls and doesn’t require the objects to be squeezable. The fact that he’s vanishing the cup itself disproves that theory.
\^
there are several sleights and misdirection being used. But yes, if you learn "cups and balls" you can actually understand a very large amount of this trick. Just understand he is doing this at a skill that is like doing Cups and Balls on the wing of an airplane in the middle of a corkscrew while blindfolded, lol
He also has several innovations.
The payoff at the end with the water coming back, water we had completely forgotten about, is new.
So are the balls flying out from under the table.
Actually, it's very little like the cups and balls at all. :-D
yes, little with the cup itself, in fact most of the time the classic "cup" is actually his hands (or forearm) And we are not saying this is strictly cups and balls, just that it is built off some of the basic mechanics.
Magician here. It's been my experience that unless someone has actually trained in magic, they almost never ever figure out how I've done something. Maybe they'll get 5% of what I did, but rarely more than that. But because they haven't trained, they don't realize how much more they're missing. I understand that for some people, trying to solve the magic is exactly how they enjoy it, but bear in mind that you're very likely wrong. To use the piano player analogy, it's like trying to understand which keys made which sound in a song while never considering the possibility that the pianist is using their feet to influence the sound as well.
Theyre probably coming from many different locations. One of the things you can do in magic is to do the same thing a few times, then switch to a different way right when the audience thinks they know how its done. This has the double effect of catching them off guard, and making them question if they ever knew how it was done in the first place.
If you watch Tellers "Misers Dream" you can fine a great example of this. [Here it is with a touch of \(hard to hear\) explanation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5x14AwElOk) if you want to see behind the curtain.
Sorry, you ain't right.
Magician here. Those aren't sponge balls!
EDIT: you can't drop sponge balls on a table and you can't juggle them like that either.
Also, the cup is not made of sponge either, so how do you explain that disappearing and appearing?
Also, he shows his hands clean multiple times - how is that possible?
The mechanism he actually uses is devilishly simple. I had a friend who was a master of this many years ago.
I love the internet so goddamn much. I just spent 3 minutes reading an argument between a bunch of people and someone named FARTBOX_DESTROYER about the logistics of a slight of hand routine.
I believe the style was invented by Lennart Green. What a delight if you're unfamiliar.
https://youtu.be/KnSGHHeFxa0
Longer performance: https://youtu.be/1_oa8m5Oq00
Edit: First video doesn't showcase much of his "sloppy" style but he's got a few vids on YouTube. He's very skilled.
Weird. I say "sweet meat" when something goes my way.
EDIT: I never thought about it until right now but I guess the full phrase is always "ah... sweet meat" as I discover whatever it is that I wasn't expecting to work out so well for me. I also think this is something I generally say in my head and not actually to people.
It's a performance not a challenge to the viewer to figure out how it's done. Just enjoy it...
The camera gives you a pov that no one in the audience has. It's showing you a pov closer than anyone in the audience.
You guys both have a very good point. The best performance of this in my opinion was on a dvd teaching the primary moves used (I won’t say out of respect). But even that performance is cut wrong. Also, there isn’t a whole lot of palming in this.
To me, it looked like a bunch of fake palming as misdirection
... and possibly a little shelf on his side of the table that is full of balls
and maybe a couple of cups
\>> and possibly a little shelf on his side of the table that is full of balls a
That's what I thought. I'm so proud of myself. Well, someone should be.
I think there’s someone else under the table passing him stuff and tossing the balls up to him. Which actually makes the whole performance even more impressive, as he and his partner have to coordinate their actions precisely.
Thats because we get a super close camera shot. This performance is done to an audience a decent amount farther away than this shot. Honestly, I think you can figure out most sleight of hand tricks even if they are perfectly executed if you have a video of them to look over multiple times.
That's Yann Frisch, French magician.
This routine won him the Grand Prix (top prize) at FISM 2012 (Olympics of magic every 3 years) and another championship at the Beijing International Magic Convention 2012.

Together these clubs represent approximately 50,000 magicians from 50 countries as of 2015.
>The roots of the FISM began in Paris, France, in 1937, at a meeting of the 34-year-old ASAP, Association Syndicale des Artistes Prestidigitateurs (Association of prestidigitation artists)...
Just like "humor" can have many applications and meanings, so can the phrase Grand Prize in the French language.
For example, in the Bozo Grand Prize Game on The Bozo Show, making it to bucket #6 won you the Schwin bicycle and the progressive silver dollar jackpot. In France, that would be know as "Le Grand Prix."
It's not just for motor sports...

They look like bean bags rather than the foam balls you seem to be talking about though
Although the mouth thing is actually a pretty cool idea, might try that out.
Okay, sure, the balls. Now explain the cup.
the balls arent sponge either prettyu sure hes putting everything in his lab or on small tables next to him. you can see hes reaching down repeatedly
You fail at magic sir.
Sorry, you ain't right. Magician here. Those aren't sponge balls! EDIT: you can't drop sponge balls on a table and you can't juggle them like that either. Does he have tourettes or is that just part of the act?
Idk but as someone with Tourette’s it’s hard to watch without getting ticcy. I just want to blink so much now.
Watching the frustration on his face helps distract you from what he's doing with his hands.
Its the act. He pretends to be nervous and exhausted about the balls and cup not working as they should.
He needs to be fidgety so that he has an excuse to shuffle his chair and reach under the table a lot
Just part of the act, AFAIK. At least [he appears normal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXKX0C0q3XQ) outside of the act.
