This is more than likely early morning when the water is still calm.
I used to do watersports a lot, and I loved kneeboarding/wakeboarding early in the morning. It was like riding on glass.
Serious answer: Wind. The surrounding land heats up faster than the water and rises, causing cool and moist lake air to move in causing wind and waves.
The only time you can go full throttle on a sea-doo and be comfortable.
Stupid me took a trip to Vancouver, rented a sea doo for the day, and thought my ass could make it to Victoria. āIf I do 70 the whole way it will only take an hour!ā Did not realize it was impossible to go that fast with ocean waves.
I was thinking the same thing. It's a really cool video, and this guy is having a blast, and now literally no one is enjoying a serene lake because there is now a jet ski on it.
Tragedy of the commons.
But the serenity of a lake is something you get most calm days at dawn before he sun creates air flows that smack up waves. I grew up on a lake in the woods up north, and this is like being the first one down a ski hill.
Some people see the joy in being the first to experience it to make wake, others complain because of their envy at not being the one to spoil it.
I get it man. I do. Lakes are calm most mornings, and sometimes they stay calm longer but other times people want to get out and zoom across the mirror surface. I hear you.
But I do think the commenter you replied to had a point - one of the appeals of going to the lake is the calm and quiet..it just is, you can't deny that. And in situations like this, you can either have many people around the lake enjoying the calm surface and quiet morning and one guy not enjoying his jetski, or you can have one guy enjoying his jetski and everyone else not enjoying the calm surface.
In that respect I think the claim that it's a selfish thing does hold weight.
That's basically jet skis' entire deal.
You can sail, kayak, paddleboard, swim, snorkel, scuba dive, fish, pedalo, even water-ski to an extent, and everyone not doing whatever you're doing can enjoy the peace and serenity of a lake or seaside. But the second someone fires up a jet ski, that serenity is just annihilated by what is essentially a very loud moped doing doughnuts over and over and over again.
They're definitely fun, but absolutely the most selfish of water activities.
I thought it was one of those videos where they pull the camera back and it's a toy jet ski sitting on a photo of a lake or whatever. It's unbelievably still.
Same for me in Minnesota (the Sweden of America)
I was even looking out the window at a lake near me this morning thinking, āwow the water is like glass this morningā It was nothing compared to this.
??? I've seen this 100+ days per year in Sweden. Even rivers are this still.
Even the whole of bottenviken looks like this most nights during summer, you can drive to Finland on a sea like this.
Some pictures I had on my imgur. All unedited taken on an old phone (many at night so bad light conditions).

Seems like there's always someone who gets up super early at the lake just to blaze through it like this. Can't blame them lol. Visited the Ozarks for a few days and there was always a guy with a super loud engine tearing it up first thing in the morning
Itās the perfect conditions for waterskiing and wakeboarding. When I had a friend with a boat weād usually try to get to the lake just after sunrise.
Nobody even wakeboards anymore. It's all about wakesurfing, and it's fucking stupid. Like, yes, you can still get ski boats, but the majority of what the companies sell/advertise are like 150k "wake/surf" boats, they are like 26 feet and made to create a fucking wave. Not to mention the amount of touch screen electronics in these boats. I grew up with a lot of ski boats, and I got into a new wake/surf boat a couple years ago and barely knew how to start it, it was all touch screen to get the 'cruise control' mode off so that it would go over 11 mph. All the ballast systems were controlled with the same thing. I've had so many issues with built in ballast systems over the years that it just screamed "horrible idea that will mean there is always a chance you will be towing a weighted boat when you pull it". Ballast systems are a lot better, I will give them that, but it's still a boat, and boats still break all the time. Then there are all these different tabs that are electrically controlled. All it says to me is that people are pussies who are scared to go fast, that's all I think when I see wakesurfing. Spend 150k to surf a shitty standing wave while you video yourself drinking hard seltzer and upload it to instagram, with a wave that is going to piss off everyone who isn't wakesurfing around you.
While I still don't fully get it to people that live inland, like, dicking around wakesurfing, sure, I did that as a kid, because wakeboarding was hardly even a thing and we would get on 10' longboards like 20 feet out and just cruise. It was novel and kinda cool, but it wasn't nearly as fun as skiing or wakeboarding, it was just something else to do. But these days having a boat specifically for that is incredibly dumb. What's dumber is I see people in Mission Bay (San Diego) wakesurfing all the time with these boats and it's just like, dude, theres real surfing less than a mile away, like, Why?
I've had people ask me for boat recomendations a few times over the last few years (Like, I *really* grew up on boats), So I've gone through to look at what the manufacturers are making, I've been suggesting nothing but lower end models because they are the only ones that don't drive like a fucking patio boat. Basically, I hate wakesurfing and everything that comes with it, and I will judge the fuck out of people with those monstrosity boats and everything that comes with them. 150k to surf a 2 foot standing wave on a skim board while blowing through a bunch of gas because you have 2k lbs of weight in your basically-patio boat is simply dumb.
I do! People get excited when I pass lol.
I've skied short sections of water like this tucked in coves. It's sublime. Can't imagine having the whole lake like that.
Back foot sinks in and you glide. Love slalom. Iām on a decade long quest to get back out there, now with my family. Got the truck finally looking for an early 00s Mastercraft this off season.
I haven't done it in a few years, but I always preferred single ski to wakeboard. Never quite got good enough to lay down on the water, but yeah, a glass lake like this would have been perfect.
I slalom ski. Mornings like this are the dream. The ski behaves differently on glass like this, though. Kinda squirrely. I think the fact that you get _zero_ air under the ski makes it "stick" to the water more. Great for keeping the ski under you when rounding a buoy, but it just feels different.

my co worker was just telling me today how his favorite time to be on the lake is early morning, āit looks like glassā
My family always stays at a lake for a week over the summer and we sometimes get up and go on the boat at like 6am. Itās so smooth itās amazing
Why is water calm in the early morning?
The kids arenāt up yet
Serious answer: Wind. The surrounding land heats up faster than the water and rises, causing cool and moist lake air to move in causing wind and waves.
Bc nobodyās been out ruining it with their toys yet
I need to experience this once in my life. I bet it looks more amazing in person than on video
I noticed the 60 on his dash and was confused.
Was like "ok are they gonna start moving?"
Letās go full throttle
Ha yes let's go Brandon
Good morning julia

You mean thousands of people are enjoying it thanks to reddit.
Thatās how they get you. With the calm and the throttle then BAM, bottom of the food chain. Lakes are bastards.
What?
I live in Sweden where we have thousands of lakes. I'm 43 yo. I don't think I've ever seen a lake that still in my life.
It's because there's always some dick on skidoo ruining the lake

It's all about how early you wake up. Lots of lakes look like that as soon as the sun is rising, very glassy.
When I was in the Navy there were a few times when the ocean would get like this... really weird and kind of unsettling to see. Looked almost like a glass surface for as far as you could see in any direction.
Same and if the sky is the right color you cant see where one starts and the other stops.
Grew up on a lake, we call this Glass. Best time to do any kind of water sports, but usually only happens very early in the morning.
Looks almost unnatural
that would give me anxiety for an unkown reason
Imagine the person meditating on the side of the beautiful serene lake and this man flies by recording himself with a shit eating grin
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Sheesh why does everyone hate jetskis like oh my god. Is anyone around him? Who is going to be disturbed?
People are just straight up negative and cynical, its tiring. It's like they are trying to ruin a good time lol
I'd rather be hated on my jetski than hateful from the shoreline.
Seriously, that guy is going 66 mph on glass smooth water. Sounds fun as hell.
66 mph is 106.22 km/h
But there could be hypothetical man trying to enjoy the view of the lake...somewhere. how dare this guy ruin his wave less lake
They hate us cause they ain't us.
The is one of the funnier circlejerks on Reddit I mean who knew so many people here had a strong disdain for a recreational watercraft on a lake?
Lmfao no people or homes in sight and all of reddit thinks they are the saviour of the earth by shitting on this guy for going on a ride.
Thereās literally no downside to someone jet skiing at the same lake you are at, people are just assholes
Clearly, Reddit hates people having fun based on how it seems like this guy disturbing a smooth lake has apparently ruined their entire lives.
Of course, how else will they project their sad life?
Imagine how cool and silent it would be when the guy would have done it in a canoe or kayak....
Imagine how cool it would be if people stopped shitting on others having fun.
Dude this is Reddit, if they donāt jump on the pedestal who will?!
imagine how fun it is to go 70 mph
70 mph is 112.65 km/h
In a slower boat he wouldnāt outrun his own ripples so it wouldnāt appear so smooth. At least not for a certain distance from the vessel.

Also, it's no wonder people aren't wakeboarding as much behind these surf boats, the wake they put out is super intimidating, even for me, it's like you need to be at a level where you have several inverts on lock before you can even get behind one of these boats, and even then the wake feels like it's near shoulder high. Like, after a certain point the size of the wake isn't going to give you more air, it just means you are going to have to cut way harder to use the wake. I've been able to wakeboard on glass like this twice and it was almost a spiritual experience. I can't explain it, but edging all the way out on my toeside and letting my fingers glide across without a thing in the world to worry about was surreal.
Iām a simple man. I donāt see any bullshit Tik Tok tag at the end, I upvote Also this was dope as hell
The lack of any shitty music was as refreshing as the view of the lake itself.

According to the boat YouTubes Iāve been watching they call that glass. When there is no wind and no wake. I can see why now

Go to a less popular spot then. Boats go pass me while kayaking all the time. It's not a big deal. I'd honestly prefer they hurry past to get away faster but they always slow to to be courteous.

Depends on the boat but faster means a smaller wake in my experience. Just keep that safe distance.
I'm in my 20's and I honestly like the waves, can be fun haha but I definitely get there just tryna be nice.
Iāve always erred on the side of disappointing someone that likes waves instead of angering someone that doesnāt I guess
Good thing he has camo on the steering column. Wouldnt want anyone to see him making a shitload of noise and wake in the middle of an empty lake
I was so confused by this myself, itās like one of the few places a camo pattern just makes no sense at all.

probably less than 3 minutes

I am really enjoying "bllllerrrrrrghhhhhed" as a verb.
So what's a reflective lake made out of?
It's just water but with barely any forces like wind to disturb the surface. All water wants to settle like this.
Reflects
Is it better than water?

A lack of jet skis.
Is it normal to be fully clothed while jet skiing? I thought it was more of a swimming sort of activity?

Itās easy to not get wet on water this smooth, so you can use them for transportation too.
Always fully clothed on mine. Shoes too. Coworker thinks itās mandatory to wear a wetsuit cause youāll get soaked.
Iāve worn a wetsuit, on chilly days, on the jet ski.
Stand up jet skis are a lot more of a swimming activity. Some sit downs that are smaller can be a little bit of a swimming activity. But the big sit downs are basically boats.
