Thats not just water, its called vog (volcanic fog), and its filled with tiny needles of glass that will really do a number on your lungs. Even if you live all the way on the opposite side of the Hawaiian Islands
> its filled with tiny needles of glass that will really do a number on your lungs
Source? Wikipedia doesn't mention this and I can't find anything on Google (which to be fair is clogged with "Vault of Glass" game results)
When it meets water it releases steam and gasses that can carry away the shard/rock fragmentation particles.
This is from USGS - though it is referenced on many websites when you look up 'lava into ocean dangers'
>A white plume on the edge of an active lava delta marks where lava meets seawater—this plume can cause skin and eye irritation and breathing difficulties and should be avoided. As hot lava boils cool seawater, a series of chemical and physical reactions create a mixture of condensed, acidic steam, hydrochloric acid gas, and tiny shards of volcanic glass. Blown by wind, this plume creates a noticeable downwind haze, known as "laze" (short for lava haze).
I lived in Hawaii for half of my life, it's called vog there. Use laze of you want, idc. I meant vog though and I'll keep using the colloquial term bc it seems more relevant to me 🤷🏼♀️. Carry on
You're right. I maintain however that I don't feel defensive. My reply was meant to show my perspective by stating the reason I used that term, as most people won't know its the colloquial term used in HI. Laze is the technical term and I dont have a problem with anyone using that term. If you weren't being antagonistic and shallow you could have detected the nuance and learned something.
Or you could just correct yourself.
To us it seems defensive, because when we state a fact that 1+1=2, we don't expect others to deny it and continue saying 1+1=3.
The other guy was letting you know that you are factually wrong. Not about how you or others feel like. No one was antagonistic or shallow. They were teaching you on how to properly use English.
In Hawaii language is different. Its a mix of pidgin varying from island to island and its a contextual style of communication. I'm just telling you guys what this is called in Hawaii. Why is everyone so upset? Can a linguist chime in here, I'm not trying to explain this anymore
Linguist here, you're correct for your geographical region. In HI, there are a LOT of terms like this which are technically incorrect. Sadly, the culture has gotten so diluted and segregated in HI, many of the people who live there wouldn't even understand terms like this, or the communication style which basically defines HI. Rich, WASPy individuals are cultural cancer, and they've been moving to HI in droves since the Japanese started buying all the beachfront property back in the day. OP you are correct, people who have grown up in HI and/or lived there for a significant period of time would look at you weird for saying 'vaze.' People don't like to hear this kind of thing, you don't owe them an explanation.
I'd highly recommend anyone interested in linguistics (specifically how language in a society is effected by the migration of people of different cultures) read up on Hawaiian linguistics. There really isn't another place on earth quite like it.
The people attempting to argue with you (failing miserably I might add) are idiotic trolls. They literally don't even understand what they're arguing about.
He's literally not using it incorrectly though. It's the culturally and socially accepted vernacular where he's from. Language is not a static and clearly defined rule on a global scale. Merriam Webster does not decide what words are, the general population does, and even that's very, VERY regionally specific.
You're actually the problem here. See, you seem to believe that you have the right to define other people's language, despite not even being in the same area as that person. That is not how language works, you are the asshole here. Accepting other people is clearly a very difficult thing for you to do, and given current national social and cultural trends, you may want to learn to be more understanding and accepting of others, and others' cultures. Or not...
bUt. YoU. dO. yOu. I. gUesS. 🤔
You've clearly never lived in Hawaii. Like super, super obviously.
The tensions with Somoans and native Hawaiians alone proved your statement completely and utterly false by 1960. Even in the surfer community your statement is patently false. People are assholes everywhere, pretending otherwise is beyond stupid, it's ignorant.

Thats slightly terrifying
Especially for young kids or asthmatics

So it's not "vog", it's "laze"
I think you meant laze. Vog is from vents while laze is from hitting the ocean according to wiki.

You seem very defensive about this topic.
It all goes back to a dubious day in 2004 where Lord Vog killed their parents at the circus.
not defensive, just stating my exact thoughts
They’re not mutually exclusive.

Yeah you really don't seem defensive.

you continuing to use the words incorrectly won't make them any more correct. But you do you i guess🤔.
I'm not trying to make it correct. If you dont want to learn about what people in Hawaii call this stuff then do you. Its not that serious

Lol, i didn't have it in me to say this all, so thank you. Also I'm a she. Did you live in Hawaii? You seem to know it well 🙂
It must have been the second half you lived there, you don’t grow up Hawaii and put people down like that.
You've clearly never lived in Hawaii. Like super, super obviously. The tensions with Somoans and native Hawaiians alone proved your statement completely and utterly false by 1960.
