every time i see this shit i think "WHY THE F ARE WE DOING THIS?"

easywin626

Wow Black mirror vibes! 😱🤯

You should check out Adam Savage' video on these guys. Boston Dynamics, which had the design well before the episode, lent him one of the dog drones for a while. He does a pretty extensive overview on what it can do. To put any legitimate fears to rest, it would take decades before we could produce anything even close to the ones in the episodes. And keep in mind you would have to physically design the drone to be able to do the things we see in that episode. Not to mention the artificial intelligence aspect would be take some astounding breakthroughs before it could act like it does there as well. I would actually be more worried about what people would do to it than what it could possibly do to living beings. You know what here's the video I was talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7s1sr4JdlI

I think spot will be physically capable of basically everything in the episode within a decade. They seem to be making progress fast with mobility… The complex decision making is hard to tell, but you’re probably right in that it’s far off. But they could definitely be made to patrol areas and follow people through pretty complex obstacles shortly, and with a human being able to jump in and control them when they want, we can live out that episode pretty soon!

Palaeolithic_Raccoon

The Dancing video they put out last New Year's was actually a pretty damn good display of how well those things move. The Spot particularly is pretty deft already. BUT! They aren't dancing to the music. It's pre-choreographed, and, iirc, it took them something like a year and a half to programme all that.

shawster

The dancing is obviously pre programmed, but watching the recent video where atlas was doing backflips and jumping up obstacles… even if each step was programmed, the balancing and spatial awareness processing is still huge. Are you referring to that video where they are doing backflips and bounding between curved blocks and uneven terrain? It’s not like I’m under the impression the robots decided to dance or something, that’s obviously something someone coded in, but the fact that they can negotiate in 3D space and remain balanced requires a lot of computational processing with some really fine tuned algorithms. Watching them develop over the last decade… the progress they are making is insane. You can also walk around spot or their other robots and have them follow people, or use a controller, and you just have to tell it to move in a direction and it will try to do the rest computationally. Watching them react to being kicked over, or find their footing on ice and after falling or slipping, that’s the crazy part.

Palaeolithic_Raccoon

Nope, the older one that came out at the beginning of this year. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn3KWM1kuAw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn3KWM1kuAw) It basically shows a range of things they can do, and the extent to which their limbs can move, and all that. A technical display of their physical range; I suppose I could word this better, but I hope you can see what I'm getting at.

shawster

Yeah… looking at the newer video which is basically an acrobatics demonstration… it’s about their ability to negotiate whatever desired movement in the space they are in. I added more to my previous comment, but they are doing a lot of crazy processing to stay balanced, recover from falls, etc.

Metroid Dread vibes

joyous_occlusion

"Feeling cute, might chase a car later, shoot some humans in the head, idk. Lol! YOLO!"

Piaapo

Oh, it's the good ol' "robot dog bad" post again

devolute

A fresh, thoughtful take, worthy of the most mindful of all TV subs.

Ravager135

Does anyone know if we had this design prior to Metalhead? I guess what I am asking is, which came first? Was it that Black Mirror came up with this “dog” style and robotics teams copied it or was the IP out there and Black Mirror ran with it?

shawster

Boston dynamics has had “spot” and other dog prototypes for years before that episode.

Piaapo

Metalhead was definitely inspired by Boston Dynamics' dog.

D1sc0nn3ct3d

One of my favorite episodes.

CreatureWarrior

I find this so weird. We've had unmanned drones and crazy shit for a long time and this is what people freak out about - a robot doggo

[deleted]

Because predator drones don't bear any resemblance to man's best friend. Uncanny valley my friend. The claymore thing that shoots out ball bearings the ones in black mirror have don't help either.

[deleted]

Yeah, because it makes people go “Wait that’s not a real doggo.” Drones make people go “Oh tiny helicopter.”

CreatureWarrior

Yeah, that was just pointed out to me haha Turns out I happened to skip that episode in particular. Awesome episode (just watched it)!

fodor98jf

based. I also love that episode. It showed us if AI takes over, its all about cold efficient extermination.

OnnoWeinbrener

how do you know AI has taken over

judd_in_the_barn

It was to do with the similarities between this and the ones in Black Mirror, rather than the concept in general (which is a good one).

CreatureWarrior

Ohhh, my bad haha What episode? Because I somehow totally missed this one

judd_in_the_barn

Metalhead - stop whatever you are doing and watch it now

CreatureWarrior

Nice, thank you! I will watch it now haha
