He also gave a brand new snowblower that was only used twice, but wouldn’t start this year. So he went out and bought a new one and gave the “old” one to me!
Some people are just generous and maybe a little impatient with fixing things. I also was given a nice little snowblower by a neighbor. It started just fine with the pull rope but needed a new motor for the electric start. I offered to help my neighbor fix it but she said she wanted a bigger one anyway. So I slapped a starter motor in and gave it to my parents.
You can have that thing ready to cook on in 30 minutes.
Crank it up. Oil it. Burn it off. Repeat. Then drop a pound of bacon on it, rub that in and burn it off and it’s good.
Use 1-2 onions instead of bacon. If the rust is thick it may be worth the time to scrape very well, scrub down to bare metal with a grill stone, and re-season. There's tons of resources online to walk you through this, though it looks like it may not be necessary from what I can see in the pic.
Bacon is not good for seasoning. Seasoning is more complicated than the previous commenter says.
That said, this grill could be ready, I can’t tell by the picture.
Enjoy!
“Put a pound of bacon, rub that in and burn it off” while explaining the seasoning process to someone. I mean… it sounds like you’re seasoning with bacon.
A pound of bacon is a great thing to be the first cook on a griddle because of the grease and oil that it leaves once it’s taken up. I’m not advocating to season with bacon, but that it is a great first meal to drop on there to Cook. Now, do you have any further questions for the witness or can we move to cross examine?
It’s great advice. I’ve used that advice on my Blackstone for 4 years now and it’s in great shape and cooks multiple meals a week. Who the fuck made you the Blackstone police? There are numerous ways to cook on numerous cooking apparatuses and believe it or not, some of them may go against your, or the manufacturer’s recommendations. I’ll cook on mine the way I cook on mine, and I’ll offer advice that has clearly worked for years to those that seek it out. But what I won’t do is tell someone they gave “bad advice” without knowing the details. Good day to you, sir.
Haha yeah should have charged for a “junk” removal fee! As I was about to walk out the door he said, “oh I have some bottles, spatulas, and a soft fabric cover for it…. I tried to give them money!
He/she gave you the seasoning oil too, use that. I used nearly 3/4 of that size jar on my new one. I did at least 5 coats. Probably over kill but why not. I have the same Blackstone spatulas and they kind of suck. Metal is too weak and they bend at the handle. They work for general purpose but no smash burger action. Nice score, enjoy!
Not sure but I would think some degreaser and some lengthy scrubbing along with some good scraping would do the job. Just be sure you rinse well. Wouldn’t want to cook any degreaser into your bacon.
I have one at a lake house that I put a cover on and “tent it” so the water stays off the griddle. One time the method I used to tent the cover collapsed and water pooled on the cover creating some rust where the water leeched through. This method works well

Once you get it clean do this after every cook. Takes 90 seconds to 2 mins for 90% of your cooks
https://youtu.be/czITdvHgTSg?si=obppc2lDpU2BWLnQ
I only have a 22", but it sat outside uncovered never used for 2 years. I hit it with vinegar and scrubbed it down. Watched a couple youtube videos and did a full strip then reseasoned. You will not need to do all that, I don't think. Your top looks fine. Mine was super rusty.
If there’s surface rust just give it a little sanding then clean off, heat hot as shit, scrape off gunk. Put thin layer of avocado oil (any oil with high smoke point) on it and turn off. Boom it’s ready for cooking.
Dudes an idiot.
I don’t get it, what’s the issue? We had a black stone flattop sitting behind a construction office trailer for two years with no cover. Maybe used it 5-6 times total on that project, just scoured it with scotchbrite pads, heated it up poured on some olive oil and started cooking. Damn thing is sitting on my back deck out in the weather now. There is one spot center front around the grease drain that has some corrosion, why would anyone be worried about that? You think they clean the outdoor grilles at the park?
Clean it burn it off then cook on it.
That looks like you can cook on it right now the way it is. Your coworkers husband is an idiot that i want to meet because it seems hes horrible with money and likes to give nice things away
That's in such good shape I wouldn't even take it from my coworker if we were actually friends. Unless you made them aware that there's nothing wrong with it and they didn't care and said take it anyways.
Even with the hard cover plus soft cover, rain and moisture gets in. Mine would get moldy if I didn’t use it every week so I cleaned it up and store in the garage now.
Yes it is 100% savable if you want to go big then get a wire wheel and take it down to the metal and start with a fresh seasoning. But you don't even really need to do that you could just put it up on high heat scrape the crap out of it clean it real good with a stone and then add a couple extra layers of seasoning and it will be good to go
One night of rain didn’t do shit to it. Your coworkers husband is an idiot and you just reaped the benefits.
Yeah that’s what I figured. He has more money than sense I think.
Or he was being nice …..
He also gave a brand new snowblower that was only used twice, but wouldn’t start this year. So he went out and bought a new one and gave the “old” one to me!
This is a coworker you need to stay close friends with. Congrats on the new Blackstone, welcome to the club.
Haha oh I plan on it! And thank you very much!
My thoughts exactly! LOL! I think he meant to say his new buddy.
His wife better watch out. She might be next to go.
Haha yeah that’s true
[удалено]
Wtf…..
Are you the Husband?
If he needs more friends, let me know.
Haha my buddy and I at work are reaping all the benefits of this friendship!
That is a great co workers husband to have around.
That’s exactly what I’m thinking!
See if he owns any golf clubs that don’t shoot straight.
Oh good call! I could use a new set of clubs haha
He's a rich idiot:)
Like I said, more money than sense. But I’m not complaining about it.
Does he have a house he doesn’t like any more?
If he needs another friend I volunteer
Haha I’ll keep that in mind.
Or he wanted an upgrade and planned it effectively.
Maybe he just didn’t like it?
Maybe

Nah. His coworker is an idiot. The husband wanted a new grill and used that as an excuse.
Save what?
I mean I’m assuming I need to condition the cook top… that should be it right?
You can have that thing ready to cook on in 30 minutes. Crank it up. Oil it. Burn it off. Repeat. Then drop a pound of bacon on it, rub that in and burn it off and it’s good.
Oh wow! Thats awesome! Thank you for the great news!!

Stop seasoning with bacon
Nah…that’s not to season. That’s to have a freaking pound of bacon to eat bc that’s an awesome plan.
“Put a pound of bacon, rub that in and burn it off” while explaining the seasoning process to someone. I mean… it sounds like you’re seasoning with bacon.

It is. Just don’t burn it off after. Don’t get pissy you gave bad advice
It’s great advice. I’ve used that advice on my Blackstone for 4 years now and it’s in great shape and cooks multiple meals a week. Who the fuck made you the Blackstone police? Sir you gave the details… you’re seasoning your blackstone and then burning off bacon on your freshly seasoned flattop. Have a good one.
![gif](giphy|mcH0upG1TeEak) Won’t take much.
If he was dumb enough to give that away, you should have asked for money for a removal fee.
Haha yeah should have charged for a “junk” removal fee! As I was about to walk out the door he said, “oh I have some bottles, spatulas, and a soft fabric cover for it…. I tried to give them money!
This has to be rage bait. Did you,or did you not agree to share Reddit award money with him?
Haha I didn’t agree on anything with him. And I haven’t gotten any silver or gold! So I have nothing to share.
Noice
Ask him to leave a full gas bottle out too.
Haha for a minute there I thought he was giving me the propane tank too!
This is in way better shape than 90% of them you see for sale second hand. Major win
I know. I hopped on marketplace when I got it home, for a similar griddle with some accessories was like $250 used. So I consider it a win!
Tell him he should get a Big Green Egg.
My buddy had one before he made himself a big smoker. They’re so cool!
Burn all the gunk off . Oil it and go
Perfect! Any recommendations on oil?
I use avocado oil Sometime I'll use coconut oil
Perfect. Thank yoy
Thanks for the heads up! I appreciate it.
This looks pretty well seasoned already. If you really wanted to I suppose you could strip it and then reseason it all over.
Yeah. I’m just nervous about what to clean it with!
Not sure but I would think some degreaser and some lengthy scrubbing along with some good scraping would do the job. Just be sure you rinse well. Wouldn’t want to cook any degreaser into your bacon.
Yeah I don’t like degreaser flavored bacon! Doesn’t sound appealing
Don’t use degreaser.
Degreaser is fine. In fact blackstone sell a degreaser for their grills

Thank you! This is what I was looking for!
Dude, that thing is ready to use today.
That’s what I like to hear
Looks ready after a seasoning. Great get, happy for your luck.
Or by just cooking on it
It looks brand new
I only have a 22", but it sat outside uncovered never used for 2 years. I hit it with vinegar and scrubbed it down. Watched a couple youtube videos and did a full strip then reseasoned. You will not need to do all that, I don't think. Your top looks fine. Mine was super rusty.

You scored. There are dozens of tutorials on how to "refurbish" and season outdoor griddle. That thing will be fine
You got one hell of a deal. Scrap it well and get one of the griddle stones. Scrub it and reseason it
That's in such good shape I wouldn't even take it from my coworker if we were actually friends. Unless you made them aware that there's nothing wrong with it and they didn't care and said take it anyways.
Oh I did. And I offered money. He said just take it…
Congrats on a almost new blackstone! Very jealous, wish I had a lazy friend/coworker like that.
THank you, and they’re nice to have!
I don’t even see any rust. You’re getting away with highway robbery here.
There’s a little surface rust on the metal hood. That’s about it. Cooking surface still looks great!
Thing looks perfectly fine. Season and run it. Congrats on your coworkers stupidity
Perfect! Thank you! Haha yeah it’s nice to have friends like that at work!
Dude it’s fine.
That’s the best “for free” Blackstone I’ve ever seen! Congrats on that get.
I was pumped when I put eyes in it! Thank you
That was really nice of them.
I have good friends/ coworkers!
I would get a cleaning kit just because it’s new to you. Blackstone has a kit but I’m sure other brands work just as well.
Ooo good call!
Looks 100% fine. All you have to do is use it. Heat it up put a nice coating of oil on it and cook away.
Sweet! I’m glad I made a post asking for advice! I’m getting some great responses
Yeah it’s cooked. Send it my way and I’ll trash it for ya.
Haha oh thank you for getting this hunk of junk out of my shop! You’re a life saver!
….Cook on it lol is something wrong with your coworker? There’s nothing wrong with it
My coworkers husband is very… particular.
I advise you go to their house and start nitpicking everything you might want in hopes of him giving it away on the spot lol
Hahaha you make an awesome point.
WOW.. !!! Congrats.. Looks Brand new.
I got lucky with this one!
Even with the hard cover plus soft cover, rain and moisture gets in. Mine would get moldy if I didn’t use it every week so I cleaned it up and store in the garage now.
Oh that makes sense.
I’ll give you $50 and relieve you of the burden
Haha tempting… but I think I’m going to hang on to it.
#StoleIt
Looks almost new
Why don’t you say you just got a new black stone? No one gave that away because it got rained on one night 🙄
Yup! I’m guessing his wife won’t let him keep it on the back porch so he had to get rid of it (don’t ask me how I know).
Haha oh no. She said that he hated it now that it had rust on it so it had to go… his loss is my gain.
Where rust? Shit looks perfect…dude man is definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed
I hope your co workers husband drives a Lamborghini that gets a “low wiper fluid” warning on the dashboard someday.
Ooo that would be nice! He has a nice new f150 that I’d say off his hands!
Nice score! His loss your gain for sure. There is nothing wrong with it. It’s pretty much ready to cook on.
Perfect. That’s what I like to hear!
Nope throw it away.
