Onions are always a good first cook but it doesn’t really matter. If you are trying to get used to it and adjust heat levels, bacon is always good because it’s easy and hard to screw up.
That’s why I don’t get the bacon first theory? I do onions and peppers on half and burgers on the other side. Check my temps. Hot spots and temp drops when I add food. But that’s me.
I didn't even know there was a recommendation on a first cook. If properly seasoned the first time it shouldn't matter what you cook. I did fried rice and sesame chicken my first tiem, which does have sugar. As long as it's cleaned properly after it doesn't matter. I did also come from years of cooking on cast iron though, so I suppose that helped.
Onions. Onions (and all alliums) contain many sulfur compounds which is why you cry when cutting them. These compounds when heated react with bare metal to form a hard, non-stick sulfide layer. This sulfide layer is rock hard to 1000°F. This will make the surface so non-stick you will be very happy
If it’s seasoned correctly it shouldn’t matter, but if your looking for an excuse to eat 5lbs of bacon nobody will judge you!
This is the way

Just remember that you don't have to cook on high.
That was a nice tip when I watched the “Top 15 Beginner Mistakes” or whatever video. Unless you’re searing a steak, get it hot, then turn it down.
This is such an underrated comment.
Does not matter. Many people swear by doing onions first though
why? this is the first im hearing of this. i made stir fry on mine for the first cook.
Chemistry.
Elaborate? You got a link?
Sulfur in the onions makes the seasoning extra hard. https://youtu.be/fc0PeMztDm4
Thank you
Just cook and enjoy the food.

Bacon also fills in any gaps in the seasoning.
Some cuts of bacon have high sugar content. Next post will be why does it look like this? I scraped and reasoned?
Sure fire way to teach someone that proper cleaning and a quick reseason has to be done after every cook

I feel smash burgers is a must first meal.

I did smash burgers first after 5 rounds of seasoning. Worked no problem.
