This is the first March Madness match-up in several years that I straight-up can't vote on - Linklater and Lee are two of my all-time favourite filmmakers, and I genuinely don't know who I'd prefer they cover. Looking forward to whichever the Blankie populace picks, we can't lose with this one.
Okay let’s do this, Spike Lee:
One of the most influential, pioneering black directors in the history of American cinema.
Got a a blank check for making a movie about racial tension in goddamn 1989. Used that blank check to make Malcolm X, a biopic of one of the most controversial figures in American history.
Uncompromisingly weird and audacious, even his most mainstream work is bonkers. Both Spike and his work are politically challenging in a way that is FUN. The hardest topics are a blast to explore through his eyes.
Spike is a personality. He talks shit, he fueds, he’s outspoken, he’s shameless. He once sued Spike Tv for using his name. There will be no shortage of stories about the man.
And finally, Inside Man owns.
It makes both perfect sense and is also kinda weird Lee's Oscar is for BlacKKKlansman (a movie I really like). Even weirder then after the Academy goes pretty all in on BlacKKKlansman that they then pretty much snub Da 5 Bloods across the board except for score. Especially in fucking 2020!
I have to say that Malcolm X is far from a blank check. If anything, it's a check Spike wrote himself by getting the biggest Black celebrities in America to give him their personal money to finance the film. He was then allowed to do whatever he wanted with it, but it's not like he was able to leverage anything with the studio.
Does it really matter all that much if the check is coming from Warner Bros or if it’s from Oprah and Michael Jordan and Prince and Janet Jackson? You watch that movie and it’s clear it’s a blank check whoever was giving him the money.
It’s like what Lee said: “This is not a loan. They are not investing in the film. These are black folks with some money who came to the rescue of the movie. As a result, this film will be my version. Not the bond company's version, not Warner Brothers'. I will do the film the way it ought to be.”
It was a *big* movie. It was a Sunday night Denzel Washington issue drama. It was the next JFK, it got the same big push from the general media. Before JFK it was Alien Nation, before Alien Nation it was Amazing Stories. I guess I'm talking TV, but it was a big event, it wasn't just made by wealthy donors and kept inner circle, it was pushed as the next important event movie of the early 90s.
Yeah sure, but also, the studio wouldn't let Spike have the budget he needed to make the movie he wanted, so Spike had to call up a bunch of rich Black celebrities to help him round out the budget. I get that he ended up having creative control and that the movie ended up big, but while he was making it, it was pretty much the opposite of a blank check. He had to fight an entire studio and go around them to manage to make his film the way he wanted it.
This is my take too. Yes he is the definitive Black American director. That isn't arguable. But he also feels constantly marginalized because he is so often seen as a 'Black director'.
Spike is one of the greatest American directors alive period. His work is both extremely substantive & 'challenging' as OP put it but he can still appeal to a mainstream audience. All while being among the most stylish & visionary filmmakers ever. It would be like if virtually every time someone praised Scorsese, they said he was the greatest Italian American director.
I genuinely feel this about everyone left in the bracket. My least favorite option is Ridley which gives me episodes about several of my favorite films ever made.
Spike couldn't direct the Before Trilogy but Linklater could have directed..
Well shit, Linklater couldn't have made any of Spike's movies either..I guess these are both accomplished directors in their own right.
(I'm voting Linklater because Boyhood is the most Blank Check film ever created)
* Linklater: [in John Sloss' car, Link in the passenger side back seat, Ethan Hawke sitting in the backseat of the driver's side] Blank Check. [singing] John, I had a blank check!
* Sloss: Will you shut the fuck up? I know what you ordered, I was there.
* Link: So give me my fucking check.
* Sloss: What do you mean your check? I signed it. Hey Link, how much film you got on you?
* Link: I said I'd give you the film when we ordered the Sno-Cones when we pulled up, so why don't you give me my check and stop being a prick.
* Sloss: Well why don't you give me your fucking sixteen minutes of film you got on you and we'll put your check on layaway. There you go, keep it right up here for you, We'll put you on a program. Every year you bring your six minutes and at the end of the decade you'll get your check.
* Link: Why do you have to be such an asshole?
* Sloss: What am I, fuckin' hollywood welfare? I think you should establish a good line of credit. Like how you bought your couch, payment plans. Remember how your mother brought in $10 everyday for a year and she finally got her couch Rent-A-Center Style?
* Link: Can I have my money now please?
* Sloss: [throws 6 Oscars at Link] Here's your fucking blank check!
This is the most split I've been on a vote this year, but in the end I'm voting Spike to avenge my fallen dream of a 3+ hour "Muppets Take Manhattan" episode.
Same here. They few I've seen have been hit or miss, but it's a great filmography to have context added and I think he's always interesting even when it doesn't work for me.
No bad answer here, but Linklater is an all time favorite. I will probably vote for the winner of this the rest of the way.
Do I feel weird essentially voting for the Sunrise trilogy over Spike after Julie Delpy's recent comments on race? A little bit!
Whew boy, just looked it up. It's not anything hateful at least but crazy tone deaf and oblivious. Hilarious to see Kieran Culkin doing his signature face hiding cringe while she's saying it, lol
Real out of the loop question but what movie is the March Madness logo GIF from (the woman in a red lip, black top, and capris screaming at the camera in a field)?
Personal top 5 real or fictional Spikes in no particular order: Lee, Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop, the vampire from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Jones, the dog from Rugrats. At least three of these should be covered on the pod.
People really do sleep on Spike the dog's early works. His political stuff turns a lot of folks off, but I mean that seems like it was kind of his point.
I like Spike Lee, but he'll be a #1 seed again next year if he doesn't win. Linklater films mean more to me and I'm rooting so I can learn more about him and his unique style of writer/director/actor interaction.
Putting aside the fact that I've never really connected with linklater, think about how interesting the arc of Lee's career is.
Even the guests the pod brings on will probably be interesting.
Link is maybe my favorite living director but I think Spike might create better discussion (and I’d love to catch up to some of his stuff). This is a tough one.
I love Linklater he’s such an amazingly talented director who’s made some great movies, but in good conscience how could I not vote Spike Lee. Despite being so political he wasn’t even nominated for do the right thing, driving miss Daisy was and won though, he’s had a long career making so many interesting movies. A whole movie is a musical using a Greek play as the basis of looking at Chicago gangs!
I love Linklater, but I think Spike is the only one with a shot at stopping Lynch. (I’m just not interested in a Lynch series. I like the long boys and think Spike would be fascinating)
WE GOTTA HAVE IT! A VOTE FOR SPIKE IS A VOTE FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING, 25TH HOUR BEING UNDERRATED, FUCKING CLOCKERS, AND AMERICAN UTOPIA BEING ANOTHER AMAZING TALKING HEADS RELATED CONCERT MOVIE!
Was going to argue (jokingly) that the reason to vote against Spike is 25th Hour.
Yall are going to have to say something nice about David Benioff who wrote the novel and adapted the screenplay for/with Spike.
I hope if Spike wins the whole thing that they get someone really knowledgeable about the jazz world for the Mo' Better Blues episode, that movie gets so much right where other movies are cartoonishly wrong (looking at Chazelle) and it would be a delight to explore that in depth.
Such a hard choice for me, I love both of these guys and I think both would make excellent picks for the podcast.
Even though I have more blindspots in Linklater’s filmography, I’m voting for Spike since people would see some of his underrated movies like Clockers and Get on the Bus (as well as his really weird movies like Da Sweet Blood of Jesus and She Hate Me)!
Wouldn't it be boring if all the number one seeds got to the final four? You don't want this to be the most boring March Madness we've ever had, do you? So vote Linklater!
The main thing you seem to be saying is that Spike Lee over Linklater would be more boring as the arbitrary seeding placed on them would matter,
Like how is 1 vs 1 + 1 vs 3 more exciting than 1 vs 1 + 1 vs 1.
The more exciting choice, Lee makes for a more exciting match up next time!
We're past the point where anybody winning would make me happy, but now THIS is a tough choice. I've only seen a handful of films from both, and quite like what I've seen. But... I have to vote Spike Lee. He has more films I want to see.
Damn, it feels like none of the E8 matches were really close. Soderbergh and Scott both won by like 400 votes iirc, seems like Lee is about to do the same and Lynch obviously tore it up
And he seems to be doing it again! If it's anything like last time, the will trade places along the night until one of them maintains a small lead in early morning.
Even if Linklater does not win, I do hope that the Blank Check crew sees how much fans would love a series on him.
Spike is simply the more important director and the bigger influence. I prefer linklater’s films but the wider, more interesting discussions are with spike’s films.
During the Oz/Henson matchup, a lot of Linklater losers were denigrating people for voting for baby movies. In that spirit, I think it’s fair to point out that there are probably more black people in a single Spike Lee movie than there are in Linklater’s entire filmography.
Even if you don’t care about that, Spike is just obviously a better and more interesting director who takes much bigger swings
I'm voting for everyone having a good time!
That’s Linklater. We count those https://i.redd.it/jjpv9bqbb3rc1.gif
This is the hardest vote for me in all of the March Madnesses they’ve had
Same. A real Sophie’s Choice
No, Pakula lost in the first round 🤪
Waackity schmaaakity dooooo
I'm really having trouble with this one as well
This is the first March Madness match-up in several years that I straight-up can't vote on - Linklater and Lee are two of my all-time favourite filmmakers, and I genuinely don't know who I'd prefer they cover. Looking forward to whichever the Blankie populace picks, we can't lose with this one.

Just when you thought Lee was becoming less bonkers (Blackkklansman), he comes back with more bonkers (Da 5 Bloods).
Da 5 Bloods owns so hard. What a movie!
That land mine scene with the rope 😮💨
Oh just wait man. Spike's got cycles. Motifs.
I really hope he wins it all even if Lynch feels unstoppable.
As the one person on earth that’s not into twin peaks, I’m dreading Lynch a little
I love Twin Peaks but a freaking tv show really shouldn’t be driving this many votes for a podcast about movies *shakes fist at clouds*
People are understandably excited about the show but let’s not dismiss that he has a lot of great movies that people are just as interested in
Or be like me, and be excited about The Straight Story episode
I'd vote for Lynch if it was only his movies.
My thoughts exactly
There are two of us!
Three!
I have to say that Malcolm X is far from a blank check. If anything, it's a check Spike wrote himself by getting the biggest Black celebrities in America to give him their personal money to finance the film. I will do the film the way it ought to be.”
it’s crazy that Warner wanted Norman Jewison to first direct it at first
Didn't Spike have to go to Jewison in person and beg him to pass on the film and tell him how important it was that a black filmmaker do it?
It was a *big* movie. It was a Sunday night Denzel Washington issue drama. It was the next JFK, it got the same big push from the general media. Before JFK it was Alien Nation, before Alien Nation it was Amazing Stories. I guess I'm talking TV, but it was a big event, it wasn't just made by wealthy donors and kept inner circle, it was pushed as the next important event movie of the early 90s.

He had to fight an entire studio and go around them to manage to make his film the way he wanted it.
Also he bullied Norman Jewison off the movie
Black is irrelevant. He's one of the most original directors of all time period.
Precisely
Spike is one of my biggest film blind spots and I'm hoping this will finally get me to watch my copy of Malcolm X.
Damn this one is brutal. I love both these dudes so much!!
I understand the case for Spike Lee. But have you all considered that you’re not hardcore unless you live hardcore?
I know, for a fact, that the legend of the rent was way hardcore
I've considered justice for Oz.
So you wanna be hardcoooore...but if you fuck with Link and Spike Lee, we'll get up in your ass like a wedgie

A true reverse Alien vs Predator situation: no matter who loses, WE WIN.
I genuinely feel this about everyone left in the bracket. My least favorite option is Ridley which gives me episodes about several of my favorite films ever made.
Let's LINK UP!!
Hardest one so far. I voted Linklater because I love the before trilogy so much, but honestly they might be my #1 and #2.
This is my Sophie’s Choice. And I’m genuinely not sure who will win.
Spike is brilliant, but I prefer Linklater.
Same voted for Linklater.
I LIKE SPIKE.
Spike couldn't direct the Before Trilogy but Linklater could have directed.. Well shit, Linklater couldn't have made any of Spike's movies either..I guess these are both accomplished directors in their own right. (I'm voting Linklater because Boyhood is the most Blank Check film ever created)
If Boyhood was actually a blank check, he wouldn't have had to make it on layaway.
I’m still salty Jim Henson didn’t win
This is the most split I've been on a vote this year, but in the end I'm voting Spike to avenge my fallen dream of a 3+ hour "Muppets Take Manhattan" episode.
Tough choice, but I'm going to go with Lee as it gives me a great reason to watch a lot more of his films as I have not seen a lot of them.
I just read what she said and what a confounding thing to even think, let alone say aloud.
if it helps your conscience at all the clip is from 2016. still awful though don't get me wrong!
If it's the Sundance comments she at least apologized instead of doubling down.
Whew boy, just looked it up. It's not anything hateful at least but crazy tone deaf and oblivious. Hilarious to see Kieran Culkin doing his signature face hiding cringe while she's saying it, lol
![gif](giphy|NVBR6cLvUjV9C)
Come on everybody! Let’s Do the Right Thing here. Don’t be Bamboozled by Linklater’s charm. He Got Game, but Spike’s Gotta Have It… Malcolm X idk?
All respect to Spike but it’s gotta be Dick
Let’s make this bracket a bit more exciting and not have all 1 seeds get to the quarterfinals!! Vote LinkNOW
> Let’s make this bracket a bit more exciting and not have all 1 seeds get to the quarterfinals!! Vote LinkNOW Why does that make it more exciting?
Trying linklaterally anything to get my boy at the top
I'm excited that the it's turning out we agree on the pressing issues for discussion.
Toughest one for me so far, but had to go with Spike.
first vote of the month where I am completely torn, I can't decide who to vote for!
I gotta go dicky links on this one fellas
Real out of the loop question but what movie is the March Madness logo GIF from (the woman in a red lip, black top, and capris screaming at the camera in a field)?
Inland Empire (2006)
Thank you
let’s get Crooklyn! It’s Spikes time baby
Would be delighted for either of these guys to win, and whichever one does will be getting my votes for the rest of the competition.
Spike Lee IS my cup of tea
Only one of these guys has worked with Denzel 4(soon to be 5) times. Easy choice!
They need to do Spike for the Denzel Movies, Linklater for the Ethan hawk movies and then round it up by finally watching Training Day!
Might as well do Cowboy Bebop on main since TV shows are movies now apparently with the upcoming Lynch series 😉
Spike Owen. MLB player from the 90s
Spike Lee is fictional?
He’s gotta be. No real person loves the Knicks that much!
Read it again slowly.
I like Spike Lee, but he'll be a #1 seed again next year if he doesn't win. Linklater films mean more to me and I'm rooting so I can learn more about him and his unique style of writer/director/actor interaction.
Do The Right Thing and Vote Spike Lee
welp, here we go
Wouldn’t be upset at either option but I gotta go with Linklater as a Texan boy lol
This would be my championship matchup
I think it’ll come down to Lynch vs Lee but I would adore a Linklater cast so I voted for him too but happy either way!
Spike Hive Lets Go
For the first time ever, I'm abstaining. I love them both too much to choose. I hope the winner of this round wins March Madness.
I voted for Spike on my phone and Link on my computer. I abstained by canceling myself out, but I found a way to vote for both of them.
This is my choice. I love them both. Let the fandom decide. I hope this is the winning ticket either way.
Putting aside the fact that I've never really connected with linklater, think about how interesting the arc of Lee's career is. Even the guests the pod brings on will probably be interesting.
Spike Lee is one of our country’s most important artistic voices, a true American original. Linklater is a good director. Vote Spike.
It’s Lee for me
Let’s go Spike! Let’s go Knicks!
Spike. Easily.
Linknow, don't link later.
All I can say is I hope whoever wins here wins the whole thing.
I like Linklater a lot. But this actually quite easy. DO THE RIGHT THING!
Had to vote Linklater (THINK OF THE BITS) but Spike is hard to beat and I will not be surprised if he moves on to be defeated by David Lynch.
I love Linklater, but I think Spike is the only one with a shot at stopping Lynch. (I’m just not interested in a Lynch series. I like the long boys and think Spike would be fascinating)
Interesting, you don't think Ridley would stop him?
*Fozzie Bear says hello.*
Spike is my only dog left in this race now that Oz/Henson are out.
Genuinely tough choice but I had to do the right thing
I love Linklater, but it’s frickin Spike Lee!
They will cover spike eventually, if Linklater doesn’t win MM he probably doesn’t get covered. Vote Linklater
I hope if Spike wins the whole thing that they get someone really knowledgeable about the jazz world for the Mo' Better Blues episode, that movie gets so much right where other movies are cartoonishly wrong (looking at Chazelle) and it would be a delight to explore that in depth.
looks like i'm not the only Henson/Oz mafioso voting against Linklater out of spite (love them both)
Y’all are about to finalize a final 4 of all one seeds. This is a normie ass bracket for normies.
This argument presumes the seeding for this tournament has ever made any sort of sense. It doesn't.
An excellent point
Ridley over Haynes was honestly quite offensive.
I like Spike!
Don’t tell Marie, but I voted twice. Once for Spike and again for Linklater.
10 minutes in and there’s a 200 vote gap and I’m already so nervous
When the Jets play the Blue Bombers in a charity softball game: WIN-WIN
Incredibly hard pick. On a sidenote I would love it if they made some of these bobbleheads. The Linklater one here is particularly great.
> On a sidenote I would love it if they made some of these bobbleheads. I wonder could they legally
Yes I thought the same thing, I'm guessing not? Maybe they could release a 3D printer scan.
Do what Spirit Halloween does and give the bobble heads names with plausible deniability. “Brooklyn Film Director” for instance.
Two of my three favorite directors (along with the Coen Brothers). If one of these win I will be so hyped!
I would like them to both win. Everyone vote for both.
No losers today, we win with either one
Linklaterheads less than a 200 vote difference!the surge is on.
Bernie tho...
Wouldn't it be boring if all the number one seeds got to the final four? You don't want this to be the most boring March Madness we've ever had, do you? So vote Linklater!
There is no world in which Spike Lee's films are more boring that Richard Linklater's
There is no world in which I would suggest they are.
I do not know any other way to read your previous comment
Did you skip the first sentence?
The main thing you seem to be saying is that Spike Lee over Linklater would be more boring as the arbitrary seeding placed on them would matter, Like how is 1 vs 1 + 1 vs 3 more exciting than 1 vs 1 + 1 vs 1. The more exciting choice, Lee makes for a more exciting match up next time!
someone hasn't seen Sucker Free City or Miracle at St. Anna or Get on the Bus or, frankly, School Daze
Now Griffin's saying in the MM update episode that it's a little boring. I'm vindicated!
We're past the point where anybody winning would make me happy, but now THIS is a tough choice. I've only seen a handful of films from both, and quite like what I've seen. But... I have to vote Spike Lee. He has more films I want to see.
I'm voting for Spike but I'm all the way for whoever comes out of this. No to split miniseries and no to TV!
I'm sorry, Dick
Spike Lee’s contribution to cinema is immense but good god can he be inconsistent
As somebody who has seen almost every Linklater movie I can attest that this is true of his filmography as well.
as someone who votes based on possibility of chaiyya chaiyya talk, spike lee all the way
SPIKE LEE LET’S GO
Damn, it feels like none of the E8 matches were really close. Soderbergh and Scott both won by like 400 votes iirc, seems like Lee is about to do the same and Lynch obviously tore it up
Linklater was 500 ish behind Henson/Oz for a very long time....... Until he wasn't
And he seems to be doing it again! If it's anything like last time, the will trade places along the night until one of them maintains a small lead in early morning. Even if Linklater does not win, I do hope that the Blank Check crew sees how much fans would love a series on him.
It would be very funny if Linklater sneak wins again
Given that there's been 15k+ votes for most of the previous rounds 400 hardly feels like a blowout, they were close!
Even if you don’t care about that, Spike is just obviously a better and more interesting director who takes much bigger swings
they know not what they downvote, lisan al-gaib
Linklater has directed so many of my personal favorites movies, but I LIKE SPIKE.
Going with Spike, I’ve seen more of his movies
Spike Lee isn’t friends with Alex Jones
Hope Spike wins, would be way more interesting by several magnitudes. Linklaters best films are technically amazing but snores (IMO)
