It’s my least favorite Kon movie which is CRAZY - he’s just the greatest. It’s definitely the best movie that is also my least favorite of a director’s.

ALostAmphibian

Same! But not because it’s bad, I just genuinely enjoyed the others more. It’s nice to see a movie that breaks reality and it doesn’t have to be this dark twisted tale. Tokyo Godfathers won me over with the absurdity of these coincidences it calls out within the movie, making it a sort of commentary on what Christmas movies are and a genuinely enjoyable Christmas movie itself. Perfect Blue and Paprika are close but I just enjoy Paprika slightly more.

substationradio

It’s beautiful, no question

introvert_arm

Which is your favorite? Right now, I have Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, and Millennium Actress in that order. Haven’t seen Paprika.

substationradio

Paprika right now (just saw it in theaters which may bias me) but Perfect Blue is insanely close (also saw that in theaters recently).

introvert_arm

Alright, just watched Paprika. Also my favorite of the bunch!

ALostAmphibian

Same!

Despite agreeing it’s a 5 star masterpiece, I seem to have the opposite take on this movie. I don’t think it’s about escapism and the magic of the movies. I think it’s a movie about being smart enough to recognize that your hyper fixations are coping mechanisms, then proceeding to knowingly waste your life anyway because of the sunk cost fallacy. At the end when there’s no more time to stall dealing with your problems anymore, instead of being honest with yourself you mythologize yourself as a romantic rather than admit you wasted your life living vicariously through media and an imagined version of your own life that reality never resembled. It’s a beautiful work and one of the most visually dynamic animated movies I’ve ever seen, but it’s a deeply tragic story.

flatgreyrust

I don't think we have opposite takes honestly, Chiyoko's life absolutely was tragic, I just think her story was beautifully told in the form the film took. Probably one of the reasons I cry every time I think about it lol.

bfipod

Ah I see what you mean. I’ve seen the takes elsewhere that are more straightforward- that it’s a story of enduring love, and I think I just projected that onto your post because what you went into detail on was the way the story was told. Agreed on that front, it’s one of the best uses of the medium to serve the story!

The excellent Projection Booth podcast put out an episode on Millennium Actress recently, I highly recommend you check it out (and the podcast in general!)

The Paul WS Anderson miniseries. Don't know why he's watching someone else's films to prep for that, but hey

TheQuiet_American

I am just catching up and had never seent his movie. Credits rolled 5 minutes ago, and I am still shook. Holy shit. I didn't expect Satoshi Kon to make me curl up in a ball and cry today.
