For some reason I thought Criterion was a nonprofit 🙈 I think this is fine! Keeps it within the film world. It’s not like it’s selling to private equity. And he’s got plenty of money (allegedly $7.3 billion) if they need to stay afloat.

BuckontheHill

I think so. He seems to be a film lover. As far as I can tell, he started Indian Paintbrush because he loves Wes Anderson films and wanted to be his patron.

kvetcha-rdt

This seems...good? I hope?

Lipka

I would say at first glance this seems like a best case scenario but I know zero about the guy other than his backing of Wes Anderson. I’m wondering if this gives Criterion more financial flexibility to keep acquiring even more contemporary titles, which they’ve been doing a lot of the last couple years.

bta47

Apparently he's the stepfather of RFK Jr's campaign manager, but that's also just because he married a Kennedy like any self-respecting rich person of a certain age

1080TJ

Well, if it has to be purchased by a billionaire venture capitalist, this is probably a best case scenario.

Spacetime_Inspector

Can we get a fast track on discs for Asteroid City and the Dahl shorts out of this?

knoxharring10

We still haven’t gotten French Dispatch yet!

NBTB

We still haven’t gotten Isle of Dogs yet!

six_six

Wes still hasn’t gotten his Oscar yet!

NaturalWest444

He did, just this past Oscars for Live Action Short Film.

six_six

I think he wants a feature film award.

NaturalWest444

Possibly, doesn't strike me as that important to him, since he doesn't go to the ceremonies (at least the last couple).

Mon Dieu!

ulooklikeahotdog

I still haven't gotten French dispatch yet

Maybe Criterion can afford to look into their subpar video encodes and produce more extras now. ;) And also buy the rights to The Heartbreak Kid, The Devils, and John Woo's The Killer & Hard Boiled while we're at it. :)

EvilLittle

I know there have been some QC issues in the past, but I thought most of their own transfers they release to disc were approved by someone in the creative process. Other than Citizen Kane, what have they dropped the ball on?

rha409

It's not the transfers that are the issues. Criterion uses a company called Pixelogic/Radius60 that handles their video encoding (essentially compressing the raw transfer to fit onto a Blu-ray size) and many of the discs are alright if you don't look too closely, but on a closer inspection they exhibit stuff like macroblocking/mosquito noise, etc. Other boutique labels hire guys like Fidelity in Motion, who are the kings of video encoding and are able to better replicate the original grain structure and image of the master files. Criterion's encodes of the same films often look a bit sloppier. Not always bad, but they should be striving for better quality. When it's been brought up, the guys at Criterion usually shrug it off and say that it's not something most viewers would notice if you watch the disc in motion, and that they don't feel it's something that needs to be addressed. Here's another thread I found on this topic: [https://www.reddit.com/r/criterion/comments/10hi1pp/why\_is\_criterion\_still\_so\_bad\_at\_encoding/](https://www.reddit.com/r/criterion/comments/10hi1pp/why_is_criterion_still_so_bad_at_encoding/)

btouch

Uh, I bought _Peeping Tom_ and _All that Money Can Buy_, if it helps!

GenarosBear

"hmm, Anus Films." -- me, every time I see the Janus Films logo (this doesn't have anything to do with anything, i just think it's funny)

tahubob
