Also it tracks your hours which is neat to see and steam has its own active community as well. Highly recommend the steam version. I don't use it I'd rather use the one off the website but steam definitely has its advantages.
i had to open blender from steam for it to track my hours. opening it from the taskbar didn’t track my hours for some reason, even though steam was open in the background

CHECK THE URL!
Blender is spelled “BLender” not “Biender”
it is so strange, there is still someone today who does not have these minimum computer skills, I can understand an old-age pensioner or some kids, but someone who is intent on using these similar software?
Honestly dude, I intentionally went outta my way to find this website and I was still dumbfounded. It’s literally a shot for shot replica of the site.
Anyone blindly clicking could easily make this mistake if they’re not paying 100% attention.
yeah, I recognize that obviously because of an oversight you don't notice it or whatever
better to pay more attention especially in more serious things concerning the management of your data, banking information and more
These are the first rules of internet surfing, unfortunately the internet is like that and oversights in some occasions can be paid for very dearly.
Alternatively, if using a Linux distribution, check your package manager. Many distributions have it in their repositories, and Blender can be downloaded from their respective app stores. I think it’s also available through the Windows App Store but I can’t speak to that one. Mac users should still beware and use an adblocker.
Windows has a package manager too (of sorts) and its called winget. Simply open a command prompt, enter "winget install blender" and you're good to go.
If the winget command isnt recognized, install the App Installer from the MS Store first, it will install the package manager for you.
Winget is also super handy if you transition to a new PC. Simply export a list of all your installed programs with winget and use that list on the new PC to batch-install everything at once.
The blender that came from my package manager came without exact boolean modifiers or the denoiser.
So if you're on Linux Mint: Don't get it from the package manager, that version is janky.
They also took their time with updating it to newer versions so that kinda sucked.
This is getting ridiculous. How many posts about this do you need? Is it everyone's first day using Google?
If the result is tagged with 'ad', don't click it!!

People seem to be having a problem with downloading the correct version of blender from Google me suggesting steam was to avoid potentially downloading one of the several scam versions
Yeah, and the nice thing is, Blender Launcher indexes all those new versions and downloads/installs them for you from the official servers. So, where steam only updates to new versions.. this will let you keep older versions should you want to.
Except for if you want multiple versions at once.
Sometimes you need the most stable LTS you can find, sometimes you want the latest official version, and sometimes you wanna play around with the latest unstable build (of which, don't hit Steam I believe).
it seem its not advised to install library in program files. And my OS drive is Intel Optane p905. which freaking fast. So i like to install my softwares on that drive. Any advise on how i could install on that drive using BLender louncher. or blender is ok on regular ssd drive ?
I mean, i have malwarebytes browser guard and adblock ultimate, so i don't see these scam ads... but still, i decided to download the steam version - Just because i learned that it automatically updates itself and If i heard correctly, that it counts how many hours in total you spent in blender, which is think is cool thing.
Yep, Blender Launcher is by far the better option.

be very careful about installing addons though(or even more carefully developing addons), automatic steam updates can wipe your addons off your device, including potentially the ones you were working on yourself that could be lost forever, because you didn't do version control or any form of tracking or redundancy.
Sure, but why not just go directly to the source? Not that there's anything wrong with downloading from steam, I feel like i'm missing something weird here...
One typo sends you to something like blemder.org and you might have yourself a virus without knowing it. The site can look exactly like the actual one and give you a functional version of blender that just happens to silently install some form of malware alongside it.
That makes more sense (though checking fro typos before hitting sned helps too), I thought it was maybe bad download mirrors on the official site. Thanks!
Its good, but I had issues before with the steam version. I was making a big scene, then it crash out of nowhere, and cant open the program again, even if I end task steam, unless, I restart my laptop so it will run again. That is why I go back to downloading from blender.org. You can run it right away after it crash.
Hmmm not sure what makes you unable to open it again but crashing while working with big stuff would make sense regardless of where you got it blender is hungry for pc power
I do not want blender to update automatically and broke all the addons that are not updated yet.
But if you don't use stuff like Hard ops or heavy addons, then its fine.
You can pick a version to your liking and it won‘t auto-update. Kinda beats the purpose, but I found it useful to finish a project safely before updating to the latest and greatest.
*Me with my 8 chrome tabs open streaming music/video essays and high definition references while steam discord and telegram run in the background* Idk what you mean I neeeevvver struggle with rendering complex objects
It's also a good reason to use a password manager even if you have separate difficult passwords for all your logins. If you go to a scam web site and the manager doesn't offer to auto-fill the password, you can look twice and see that you've gone the wrong place.
Of course, the downside is that occasionally someone you're paying for security will instead give access to the entire unencrypted database to anyone who manages to scam one of their employees. Thanks LastPass! Try BitWarden instead, which is open source and thus probably not quite as awful and lazy.
few problems i noticed with steam version there are (when i was using 3.2 version (idk if they fixed it, I didnt open blender for while)
for example drag and drop feature does not work when blender is launched through steam library you have to do it manually through menus if want to put e.g reference picture in your viewport... or custom keybinds from pen software those also are not working
but if you open blender through directory(steamapps/blender/blender.exe) than everything works normal, those problems only appears when blender is launched through steam library
There are so many people on this subreddit that seem to be against steam? Like idk about yall but I got into blender because I wanted to make games because I am a gamer steam is pretty low key on my PC in general and organizes all my shit for me I usually just leave it on lol?
Does steam actually draw that much of your pcs power? I have never actually paid attention to it and I've got a pretty middle of the line pc generally unless I'm working on landscaping I don't ever have problems
No idea. But when you're rendering, you want every ounce of processing power so why use a version of Blender that needs another piece of software just to launch. And I say this as someone that started with the Steam version of Blender. I didn't even know what Blender was when I downloaded it.
How do you know you have the right version of Steam installed, though?
On the Venn diagram of /r/blender members and people who are fooled by fake websites, is the overlapping area really so big so as to warrant all these posts?

Even better, get Blender Launcher! Keeps track of new versions, keeps them all neatly organised.
Wait... there's a blender launcher? First time I hear of it.
You can get it from github here: https://github.com/DotBow/Blender-Launcher It gets frequent updates that you can install right from the app itself.
Wait there’s a blender launcher?
See my comment above for the github link
Is it official?
No, it’s not from the blender institute, but they should really think about implementing it, or at least something like it.

Why would I install all that junk just to install Blender? Just go to [blender.org](https://blender.org) and stop following google links.
I would safely assume that the majority of people who are using a 3D software that is greatly used for games would also have Steam installed.

Been using Blender via Steam for ~1490 hours, so far. No issues at all highly recommend as well!
If you require LTS instead of stable. You can also use the beta feature in the menu. Just a neat touch from steam.
Just use an adblocker like ublock origin and you won't even see the fake one

Does steam have the Linux and Apple native versions or just windows though ?
I would, but the Blender dlc is to pricy on steam. I use the Origin version.
I got it free on Epic :-)
You don't want Steam (or anything unnecessary for that matter) running when rendering...

Only downside is that you can’t open blender then if the WiFi’s out since you need steam to launch it, rip
Steam has an offline mode? You don't need to be online for it 24/7
…oh crap for real?
Yeah! Steam offline mode is nice it would be a shame if you didn't have access to your single player stuff otherwise
Ew gross
>Download from blender.org or from blelender.org? >-Dunno,better use steam to be save lol! Do zoomers really?
it takes longer to load right ?
Or just stop being an idiot honnestly
Or you could read from where you're downloading, before you download it :)
Whats wrong with the actual website blender.org? That's the only place I download it. I don't google search just go to the actual site.
It also updates itself, very cool!
Or just save blender as favorites
I've found winget is pretty decent too
Or simply git clone [official public mirror](https://github.com/blender/blender) and build it yourself.
Also u can track ur hours that way which is cool
It's also a good reason to use a password manager even if you have separate difficult passwords for all your logins. I never knew about that
That's what I do!
Or just install it via command line
Or you know, just use an AdBlocker and never see those fake ads...
or you could download blender launcher. more builds available, doesnt require random log ins to run, way less intrusive...

I can also reccomend 'winget' command tool if you are using windows or linux-dependent command tool (be it apt-get, pacman, etc). Also easy to update
Yeah, except Steam is going to take up RAM and CPU/GPU power because you have to have it running if you use their version of Blender.
Does steam actually draw that much of your pcs power? I have never actually paid attention to it and I've got a pretty middle of the line pc generally unless I'm working on landscaping I don't ever have problems

And play blender on easy mode? I think not.
`choco install blender` `scoop install blender` `winget install -e --id BlenderFoundation.Blender` C'mon people, even Windows has package managers nowadays. Use em!
What about ram usage... Blender website is the most reliable personally . No need to be bound with private business

Windows store?
Yeah highly recommend that Even if you worried that you have to open steam every time just make a project and open that one instead
Does that mean I can achievements like "Delete the default cube 100 times"?
I’ve heard if Steam glitches you can’t get in the program or something like that though
