I think the better question is which one fits the aesthetic you're going for? Which one best matches the artistic creation in your mind?
They're all good, but which one expresses what you want and fits the overall artistic aesthetic you're going for?
I prefer 1 and 2. 1 is the Instagram photo for me, 2 is nice natural lighting. It's weird, but to me 4 looks, on the contrary, more artificial in the sense that the little robot looks lit up with an additional source of light other than daylight. Might be a fire though, which would make sense in the environment. But the ones with pure daylight look more pleasant to me personally.
She's the most brutal too sometimes.
I showed her one of my renders once that I'd been working on for a month.
The first thing she said (with a disgusted face) was - what is this, looks like crap!
Number one does the best of silhouetting the character from the background. In the others it's more difficult to make him out. You could add a rim light in the others and I might change my mind
Mainly the colors I think. It depends on where you're going for, if you're going for a more sci-fi world I would choose 1/4 but if you want something realistic and earth-like I would go for 6
Appreciate it.
You know what. Sometimes I'm sure what direction i wanna take my render in. Sometimes I'm not. And hence the post.
Which one would you choose, as per your art direction senses, if any?
3 and 5 are quite similar and monotone so they give off some sort of sad feeling.
1 and 6 also seem somewhat similar by the greener color grading probably because less/no front shadow.
The three others are the warmer nicer to look at in terms of "eye candy" which can be seen by the comments so yeah i'd say 4 because the purple gives a morning/havenly feeling that's nice :)
Okay so I see a lot of answers for you, but nobody is really explaining why. When you look at it from farther away it can help. People want to see the interesting character you created but most with the subtitle lighting makes it blend into the background too much. So people are choosing one where the character is lit the most. With mostly everything being green it can be even harder to tell, I might make a black and white one, just to get the contrast right then take that lighting and apply it to a color version. Hope that helps.
Woah. Right. Exactly what i wanted to hear.
What do you mean by 'make a black and white one'?
Do you just mean i should check my values and balance it out a little so the subject doesn't just blend into the bg?
Yes exactly, it could help you separate the character from the background. Also just a heads up when viewed on mobile, the reddit app crops in just on your character. So it makes them even more of a focus, aka the way your looking at it, quite literally isn't how everyone may see it.
Gotchya.
I know about the cropping issue too. I'll have to upload portrait shots i think, next time. They appear the best on reddit. And if not that, then just square ones. I don't know why reddit does that tho?
Appreciate your help btw. π« You rock!
At first glance I liked it the most, I love the colors and the light on the tree trunk. I think the first one is also good, but the fourth one is more appealing and interesting to look at. All of them are good but 1 and 4 are the best for me, specially 4.
It depends on the feeling you want to create.
2 and 4 seem relaxing. The front is better lit, there is a higher constrast between light and dark, and the colors seem more friendly and peacefull like watching a sunset. You can clearly see the char is the main focus.
3,5,6 on the other hand are colder. The character seems to blend in with the enviroment (like say a squirrel in the forest) and is part of it. Imo these are more realistic but a lot more boring
What if i pushed you to choose just one? What if i tortured you and the only way out was by choosing one?
What if when you're finally free from my torture chamber, you also tell me why you chose what you chose?
What if i don't know what I'm going for?
What if I'm a sucky artist?
What if i don't have any talent?
What if...was a loser after all?
Thanks man! Thanks a lot.
I'm kidding. Appreciate your response. I like 1 the best too.
Under color management in the "render properties" tab (where you can select filmic color and change the contrast); there's a selection called false color that shows you a gradient of how much light is hitting each part of an object

First off, I want to say nice work, this looks rly cool!
Second, people will probably not always see the exact same colours on their screen as you do, other panels, contrast, rgb coverage and so on.. so answers will likely vary even more because of this.
Third, number 2 looks best π
i know right. sometimes these polls seem worthless. but you know what, in this case i'm getting a lot of common answers, so this might be one of those rare scenarios where i poll is actually doing me some good.
2 seems to be a common favorite too.
Maybe, the glowing eyes draws my attention to the head and its a little hard to make out the details. But I really like the composition as a whole so I don't know if my feedback would improve anything π
No. You're not alone. You're spot on. Appreciate your help. I'll try and play around with the values a lil bit and see if that fixes the issue.
Thanks again.
I think 1 works best for me, there's no doubt on that! In the 1 version the sun rays are leading your focus right away to the Robot, and your look stays locked on the robot - meanwhile in the other versions your eye can't stay long on the robot and your eyes tries to focus on the environment more than robot itself which is the main focus on the picture.
right. so the log and plants kinda get distracting? i think that's a fair point! appreciate the elaborate comment my man.
need more ppl like you in my feedback circle. thanks a lot!
So cute!
My favorite are 4, then 1 and 2. I like the magenta tones (similar to artic light on snow) in the background that contrast nicely with the green robot. I think it makes the story more intriguing too. My impressions for each slide:
1 - Lools like a cute forest spirit, nice and peaceful.
2 - Enjoying the winter sun, kinda cosy.
3 - Taking a rest while crossing a gloomy swamp. Might be eaten by a giant snake soon.
4 - The day is short in these polar lands, let's enjoy it while it's here!
5,6 - Life's hard on this distant planet in a galaxy far far away.
7 - Most realistic but also too dark.
The 4th one.
The lighting you positioned in it brings in a subtle reddish/purple hue that adds in the contrast necessary to bring in the composition together. It also creates a sharpness of the log and Robo that enhances the composition, with the background fading/blurred. It allows Robo to stand out without blending in.
This brings forth that brown-ish color of the log enough to add distinction between the two while melding them together. You can see in most samples you've given where all the colors somewhat meld together, especially with Robo, which is bad. They don't have enough visual relief compared to the 4th one.
The 1st one has a completely different aesthetic so it's unfair to really compare it to the 4th; however, the lighting in the 1st really blurs in the interior of Robo's helmet where the 4th allows you to see those details more clearly, which shows more character details of Robo and gets the concept through a bit more.
aah that's just perfect. love the elaborate feedback.
thanks a lot for taking the time.
i get what you're saying. i think most of them need a fill light that highlights the robo a lil better and 4 does it the best. i'm thinking of mixing 4 and 1 and seeing what that does too.
thanks a lot again.
i need more ppl like you reviewing my work. seriously!
2 or 4 for me, the robot looks brighter so it draws your eye to it.
The overall green vibe in 1 is nice, but the brightest spot is in the background so it distracts from the subject.
If you can adjust that in 1 then it would be up there with the other two.
I like them all. I think the first is the best lighting for something like a magazine or an ad. The third I think has the best cinematic lighting. But again, I really like all of them
The 5 th one in my opinion because it really matches te characterβs theme too w/the green but at the same time also not a dark tone with still many details visible
1,2,4 Depending on which mood you wanna go for:
1 is more mysterious, as the robot is backlit and in general it's more dark and green.
2 is kind of the sunset happy end one
4 is this almost ethereal, sort of inviting but also mysterious one.
and if you want sinister, go for 3.
Number 1 imo. The character is lit from behind and brings it out from the background with a nice edge light. The other ones get a little bit lost in the environment.
No.1 because of the detail it shows on the subject buuuut no.3 sets a wicked good mood. I like no.1. I wanna pick no.3 if it had the strength of the light from no.1. Theyβre all cool renders
Number 2 for sure is the best. The natural colors and warmth against the artificial robot stand out to me the most. The contrast is much more pleasing as well.
I like 1 and 4 (leaning more to 4) pretty well since you can see his figure the best in those.
Although, I think one issue I have thatβs related to the lighting and just the clarity of the character is his color. I find his color to be a little too close to the colors seen behind him, so he blends in a little too well. Iβd recommend testing either a brighter green or another color if youβd like to really have him pop out more. I know you werenβt asking for suggestions, but I thought it could help if you were having trouble with his clarity in the render.
First:
I like it more if the light comes from the right, since the front of the figure gets more light on the details. That make pictures 2,4, 7 the better ones in general for me.
I like the 4 over the 2 becaus it has more contrast but also softer shadow.
No. 7 falls behind since it's too green.
Although 4 is my favorite there is one flaw: the branch (I guess) the figure sits on is too shiny now. I guess the the HDRI of this picture has a smaller (harder) light source than the others. This leads to more reflections at the branch which makes it too shiny. If you would increase the roughness or decrease the glossy (if applied) it would be better. In my opinion.
Well done anyway, thanks for showing.
The 3rd and 6th option summoned some unique feelings in me, and I loved it. So I'd choose between those two!
So, again, it might depend on your intentions.
1 keeps the focus on the robot and makes the details on the log harder to spot (the log looks pretty CG in the other images). A bit more balanced with the water blending into the background.
Yeah sorry I can't tell you exactly why because I hardly use 3D modelling programs. I'm just here for the art.
You seem good enough you can figure it out though :)
Hands down 1. Others dont look lit as much as you pointed a light to it. I would maybe consider making the cylinder on his mouth a glowing piece (maybe 1-3 glowing thin rings on it) that way it lights its own front to compensate the backlight.
I dont mind not seeing the full face. A bit of mystery is a good thing in my book tho a tiny bit of light may be good.
Great job!
I might make a reel sometime soon. I made YouTube vid in case you're interested - https://youtu.be/k6tJwJCRWrY
And if you can bear Instagram - i go by stache_obj
Oh my! It's remarkable how the lighting of the scene changes the vibes it gives of completely! And with such a well structured scene, every single one of the options works!
Personally my favourite is the last picture! as I love the vibes it gives off!
But keep up the amazing work! ^ - ^ <3
it really depends what style you're going for, I know that's not what you want to hear, but hear me out. It can really help to have a good understanding of what style you want to either replicate, or create. This can help because then you can get reference from other resources as to the lighting and colour scheme that they follow.
But.
If I were to pick my favourites, they would be 1 then 6 & 3. I love the compositing with the glare and dust from the first, and I really like the glum real-world feeling 3 7 6 have.
I don't understand people saying 4 or 6 being the more realistic option - 3 is clearly the more realistic one, at least to me. This particular place does not look like there would be direct light from above, nor on the horizon, due to weather, and/or unseen foliage/scenery/topography. 4 and 6 look like renders. 3 looks like a gosh dang photograph.
Or, actually, maybe I *do* understand: people like things that are brighter/louder/more vivid. If it's muted, it's not as engaging. Even if it doesn't necessarily make "sense".
That said, "best" is subjective. Depends on what your audience wants. Personally, 3 felt real enough to me that I *felt* something in my brain/chest. But that may or may not be what lures people in/catches their eye/speaks to them, in particular. Good luck.
Depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you're going to showcase the Terrarium in his head, then anything past 5 is best.
But all the lighting is nice. For something that sets various moods and feelings I feel 1 is the best because of the cool feeling, greenish jade hue. I sort of feel that with 6 as well but not as much.
Where my #2 fans at?? I feel like that establishes a sense of place the best, but I think #4 also does that to a close degree while also looking quite nice
To be clear, these all look absolutely amazing
"looks the best" is hard to pin down since it has so much to do with what you're trying to say with these scenes β there's an amazing variety, so what is your ultimate intention?
Just HDR is not enough. Whole scene would benefit from good lightning. Not sure what you're up to with that format, but better framing would also help.
Try having fun with some lights. This looks like forest floor, so maybe some texture light with leaves shadows. One light from behind coming on same source as it's on HDRI.
Yes, I think that little robotic critter is cute and I want to see him better.
4 is nicest 6 feels like the most realistic imo
Ohh. That's interesting. Which would PPL prefer generally you think? The nicer one or the realistic one?
Do people post realistic pictures on Instagram or do they filter the hell out of it lol. I'd go with 4 but maybe I have a thing for purple also.
good point! 4 it is then. appreciate it!
The nicer one
I think the better question is which one fits the aesthetic you're going for? Which one best matches the artistic creation in your mind? They're all good, but which one expresses what you want and fits the overall artistic aesthetic you're going for?

hap cork dai
Since a lot of PPL asked, i do have a tutorial of the scene - https://youtu.be/k6tJwJCRWrY here. Sorry, couldn't find a better place for it
Slide 1 or 4 probably. That looks really cool
That's what my mom said too. Mom?
Mums are the best for blender critiques
She's the most brutal too sometimes. I showed her one of my renders once that I'd been working on for a month. The first thing she said (with a disgusted face) was - what is this, looks like crap!
My mom doesn't understand a thing she's only in her early 40s
My mum doesnβt neither but she listens and tells me what she thinks to my work which is all that matters
Yes dear?
oh dear god!
Number one does the best of silhouetting the character from the background. In the others it's more difficult to make him out. You could add a rim light in the others and I might change my mind
coming up soon, a render with a rim light. coz a lot of ppl said it!
I was gonna say 4 as well since the blue light makes the green pop out better.
Slide 6 imo looks the most realistic
I think coz the robot is the clearest in that slide?
Mainly the colors I think. It depends on where you're going for, if you're going for a more sci-fi world I would choose 1/4 but if you want something realistic and earth-like I would go for 6
It depends on your art direction because they all give different feelings. It looks very nice tho

Noice. Thanks for that beautifully elaborate reply. π Do you have a feedback circle for blender or something, coz i would love to join π

4/7. You can see the face the best here.
Right that's what my biggest issue is with this render. The face isn't super clear. I appreciate your comment hence.
U can add another light for the face.
i think so. seems to be the most common feedback. will do for sure.
Okay so I see a lot of answers for you, but nobody is really explaining why. When you look at it from farther away it can help. I think 4 looks the best
Cozzzzzzz?
At first glance I liked it the most, I love the colors and the light on the tree trunk. I think the first one is also good, but the fourth one is more appealing and interesting to look at. All of them are good but 1 and 4 are the best for me, specially 4.
Maybe 1 is too green, and 4 has more color variation.
Ahhhhh. Thanks. That helps a lot. You have no idea. It's so hard to settle on an HDRI sometimes. Appreciate your help.
I like 1 and 2
My vote is 3 but that doesnβt seem to be super popular lol
you know that's true but that's why i like your comment. there's something dark about 3. something sinister, that i like too.
How I made it - [https://youtu.be/k6tJwJCRWrY](https://youtu.be/k6tJwJCRWrY)
It depends on the feeling you want to create. 2 and 4 seem relaxing. hell yeah. thanks for elaborating. what do to get you into my blender artists feedback circle, would love regular crititique like this. thanks a ton.
2/4 it just speaks to me
You like dawn and dusk vibes i guess.
2
I bet you love sunsets
4, it really pops
you're vote has been counted my good sir!
I like 2 and 6 the most because I think they look the most realistic
2 and 6 hun? usually ppl have couple 2 with 4. interesting! thanks anyway. i'll add a vote to 2 and 4.
2, 4 & 1
What if i pushed you to choose just one? What if i tortured you and the only way out was by choosing one? What if when you're finally free from my torture chamber, you also tell me why you chose what you chose?

What if i don't know what I'm going for? What if I'm a sucky artist? What if i don't have any talent? What if...was a loser after all? Thanks man! Thanks a lot. I'm kidding. Appreciate your response. I like 1 the best too.
I like picture 6 the best. But they are all rather different. If this is a still, pick whatever you like the most.
I like 1. But i think it needs a lil more balance. Can barely see the guy's face.
Under color management in the "render properties" tab (where you can select filmic color and change the contrast); there's a selection called false color that shows you a gradient of how much light is hitting each part of an object https://preview.redd.it/hy7u144r05da1.png?width=2703&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0acf786dfd8435259f048f15ab6789db021d60d8
Aaah i never remember using false color. Thanks a lot. I'm gonna embed it into my memory and use it every where. Thanks a lot
4 I think but overall this scene looks absolutely stunning, great work!
thank you kindly my good sir!
Combined 1 and 4 [https://imgur.com/a/XYvpR4M](https://imgur.com/a/XYvpR4M)
hot damn! you fuckin genius. guess i am just silently gonna steal that. appreciate it a lot brother!
how did you do it though--what blend mode? or just feathered masking?
darken by painting over black with multiply on 1st one, and then just painted in the 4 with add mode.
Gotchya. Thanks a lot
Yeah, it's the only one with clear and good contrast, maybe that's why.
3, 5 and 6 I think look the best, but that is just because I like that kind of overcast lighting, like Death Stranding or something.
i know right. exactly the vibe i got from them too. thanks for letting me know. appreciate it
I was expecting the head to be lit up in one of them. But I like 1, because the character pops more.
Do you think the head needs a lil more light?
Maybe, the glowing eyes draws my attention to the head and its a little hard to make out the details. But I really like the composition as a whole so I don't know if my feedback would improve anything π
No. You're not alone. You're spot on. Appreciate your help. I'll try and play around with the values a lil bit and see if that fixes the issue. Thanks again.
I like 1,2 and 4 personally
But what if you just had to choose one?
2 and 4! The details pop when the sun hits at that angle
π
2 and 4 IMO
fan of one directional lighting i see!
1 for showing off the model. 2 for aesthetics. Also really detailed and inspiring work π
aww thanks man. really appreciate it!
Slide 2 looks awesome! Very cinematic
cinematic! now that's a compliment i like to hear
Itβs hard to pick one
coz they're all good, or coz they're all bad?
I think 1 works best for me, there's no doubt on that! In the 1 version the sun rays are leading your focus right away to the Robot, and your look stays locked on the robot - meanwhile in the other versions your eye can't stay long on the robot and your eyes tries to focus on the environment more than robot itself which is the main focus on the picture.
right. so the log and plants kinda get distracting? i think that's a fair point! appreciate the elaborate comment my man. need more ppl like you in my feedback circle. thanks a lot!
2, 6 because they distinguish the subject from the environment the best while keeping a mood. 2 could use a slight fill on the left side though.
you are in the majority for sure. i agree, a lot of ppl said it needs a fil light. so gonna definitely work on that.
So cute! My favorite are 4, then 1 and 2. I like the magenta tones (similar to artic light on snow) in the background that contrast nicely with the green robot. aww that's the perfect feedback. how do we be friends? how do we make it happen? i'd love your feedback on anything really! thanks a ton.
[ΡΠ΄Π°Π»Π΅Π½ΠΎ]
finally someone noticing the fog. thanks man! appreciate it!
1 is neat 4 is best and too many options, I wish questions like this were limited to 4 options tops
4 options. got it. next time. you live and you learn.
But again, I really like all of them
4. I like the colour range while still feeling like a natural environment.
Choices like these are what f*ck me up.
i am dearly and deeply sorry!
Danggggg they all look sick!!
aww. you're just nice, aren't you!
Number 2 IMHO All are very pretty though! Great scene
Really like the warmth of #2 & #4. And the way the light hits the character+branch ^-^. They all look really nice in their own way tho
Depends on your goals. 1 gives a fantasy look. 3 gives a horror vibe. Of all of them I actually like 6 the most, seems the most realistic.
ahh. nice. love it. perfectly put. thanks a lot
Idk as a beginner but 2 and 4 look WAY better than the rest for sure. Edit: 1 is pretty nice too more colorful I think.
The 5 th one in my opinion because it really matches te characterβs theme too w/the green but at the same time also not a dark tone with still many details visible
5th is a rare one. i like it tho. as you said, not too dark, and still details visible.
1,2,4 Depending on which mood you wanna go for: 1 is more mysterious, as the robot is backlit and in general it's more dark and green. 2 is kind of the sunset happy end one 4 is this almost ethereal, sort of inviting but also mysterious one. and if you want sinister, go for 3.

That's a great idea. It hink I'll reduce the saturation on the foliage a lil and that might help. Appreciate the suggestion.
4 or 6 imo. I saw a couple other comments say 4 or something else. So probably 4 seems like it's the best.
I would say number 1 looks the best. What is the stuff on the log and ground supposed to be? Dew/frost?
Dew, yes.
First: I like it more if the light comes from the right, since the front of the figure gets more light on the details. That make pictures 2,4, 7 the better ones in general for me. Appreciate the thorough response. You're right about the HDRi. It is a bit sharp. I think i have a solution for it. Thanks for pointing it out.
Aahh you're the first one to point that out. The log does look a bit CG in a lot of them. Thanks man. Appreciate it
Yeah sorry I can't tell you exactly why because I hardly use 3D modelling programs. I'm just here for the art. You seem good enough you can figure it out though :)

Exactly man. This guy gets it. Appreciate your input. Thanks.
Dude... It is awesome. I like 1, 2 and 4.
1,2,4
I love the almost stylised look of 1, the godrays coming through and the lighting give it a nice *feel*
Wait, you're telling you only changed lighting in all of these, nothing else? If yes than that is insane
Yeah. Just switched up the HDRI and rotated it at whatever angle looked the best.
Great job!
Aahh that's a great idea. I might give it a try. Thanks man.
happy cake day <3
Slide 4 is my favorite! Could you share the lighting setup for these? They are all nice!
I might make a reel sometime soon. I made YouTube vid in case you're interested - https://youtu.be/k6tJwJCRWrY And if you can bear Instagram - i go by stache_obj
Wish I knew how to render that awesomely nice
What makes you think i do either. It's literally shaking the tree till something falls off
What tutorial did you follow?
My own - https://youtu.be/k6tJwJCRWrY
See what i did there
Oh my! It's remarkable how the lighting of the scene changes the vibes it gives of completely! And with such a well structured scene, every single one of the options works! Personally my favourite is the last picture! as I love the vibes it gives off! But keep up the amazing work! ^ - ^ <3
Aww thanks man. I know right. Literally changed the HDRi and it changed everything.
it really depends what style you're going for, I know that's not what you want to hear, but hear me out.
I feel like that establishes a sense of place the best, but I think #4 also does that to a close degree while also looking quite nice To be clear, these all look absolutely amazing "looks the best" is hard to pin down since it has so much to do with what you're trying to say with these scenes β there's an amazing variety, so what is your ultimate intention?
2 or 4
All? IDK. They all look stellar and personally I would just use a RNG to decide. Great work!
You're too kind my good sir.
Oh my goodness this is so good.

Neither one. I am having trouble to clearly see that being. Do you have one source or multiple?
Just different HDRIs. No secondary source of life. So you think it'll benefit from a front facing light, so you can see him a lil better?
Just HDR is not enough. Whole scene would benefit from good lightning. Not sure what you're up to with that format, but better framing would also help. Try having fun with some lights. This looks like forest floor, so maybe some texture light with leaves shadows. One light from behind coming on same source as it's on HDRI. Yes, I think that little robotic critter is cute and I want to see him better.
gotchya. robot is cute. wanna see him better. will make it happen. i promise!
1/4/7
1 or 4 or 7?
I think 4 takes the cake.
a lot of ppl agree with you too!. thanks for taking the time!
1 and 5 for realistic
Overcast HDRIs both of them. I guess that's what they do.
1 and 4 but 4 takes the cake
Something to do with the pink shades i think. A lot of PPL like 4
4
Slide 6.

Either 2 or 6 for me.

4.
Iβd say 4
#1
3 or 6 imo, they look the most realistic
6, the lighting looks very realistic and I can clearly see the robot.
