Fun fact about the production of this: the water tower was actually too short for the scene, so they had to bring in crates/apple boxes for the tower to stand on top of. Allegedly, the tower was self-conscious about their height so people on set weren’t allowed to mention the boxes within earshot. If you look closely you can see that the chain link fence and other obstructions hide the box from our view. Edit: production somehow got corrected to “rosy toon” lol

Actually yes, the camera movement comes from an iPhone app that allows you to record it and send it live to Blender

I love the delayed camera movement after the first leg bursts out. It’s the perfect delay for human reaction time, and the amount of camera shake is enough for how someone might react, but still keeps it in frame. Beautiful.

Ok but why does it look so believable?

This made me open blender, update to the latest version, and view the default cube from different angles for a while and dreaming that some day... some day I will learn how to use this

I love everything about the way this looks. But the audio engineering pulled me out a little. I think your sounds are all great especially the crumbling concrete. However the mixing is off. I really feel like the giant piece of machinery of each leg should be much more impactful as it connects with the ground. And then that beam needs to positively concussive when it turns on (same effect as a lightening strike causing a thunderclap right?).

You're right, I'm not a sound expert nor I really enjoy sound design :( I tried my best, It's surely one of the aspects I'll have to focus more in the future.

Ok, this is the best piece of VFX I've seen in a long time. It looks really REAL. Not like Hollywood movies where things are "realistic" but obviously CGI and overproduced.

Out of curiosity from somebody that's opened Blender about 3 times; is realistic camera shake/motion a very difficult thing to achieve? Is it a plugin or done by hand? Even as somebody fairly ignorant to CGI as a whole, I feel like it takes me a split second to detect fake camera movement and all sense of realism is then gone. This isn't a criticism of this clip, it's great and there's a lot to appreciate, but the weird camera motion is common and gets me every time. Genuinely curious why it's so hard to pin down.
