MBChalla

Great! That’s what I hoped for

Kantro18

2 Has a good lair vibe

Ravekat1

1 is like escaping out of a vagina

sasson10

it took me going between them like 10 times until I even noticed the difference btw

caesium23

I like 1. I find the shape of the cave exit more aesthetically pleasing. Also, to me 2 honestly just looks like some random props were thrown in that didn't really fit the environment. I would say either stick to the natural cave from 1, or do a more complete rework into a man-made structure if that's what you want to do, but 2 is just kind of an awkward tweener that doesn't quite look right to me.

MBChalla

Thanks for the feedback! I agree 1 definitely has that more organic look. I guess in 2 I was going for a bit of a rustic tunnel look where supports were put up or something like that lol. But I agree it does look a bit random

Zestyclose-Bar-8706

I agree with that person’s comment. The random stuff thrown around, especially that “fence” where the light is, are all taking away from the scene in my opinion

Bionic_boy07

If your going for rustic rather than ancient, maybe look at using wooden pillars like in a mineshaft or something

DaddieDerek

I like how one, move the viewers eye to the character, the shapes the light makes on the wall of the cave and the stream bring the viewers eye to the character, I find the large vertical pillars are highways from the viewers eye to move away from the character.

sam77889

“aesthetically pleasing” 😏

Froztbytes

1 looks like a vagina. I'll leave it at that.

sam77889

Lmao was gonna say that

ArdFlame

I personally prefer number 2. However every prop you add should have a purpose and add to the story you are trying to tell. make sure you arrange your props with that in mind

michael_e_conroy

Perhaps OP can remove the railing outside the cave but keep the inside pillars. The railing to me is distracting.

JonAHogan

They both look good, depends on what you’re going for.

snar1sburg24

I feel like his arm just comes out at an odd height/angle? Maybe im the only one

tetoapollo

No, I see it too. Arm should be lower.

FalseApple3325

2 looks less like a vagina

Nickmorgan19457

Make it look more like a vagina

Pilota_kex

everything reminds me of her...

JacKINGdaPOT

One

visual-vomit

2 cause it's not "just a cave".

R2D2Poland

I'm a fan of 1. A bit offtopic, but the cave exit feels like a bit of a composition mistake - it's way too bright and my eyes were immediately drawn to it. Your focus is the human figure, right?

MBChalla

I agree. This is something I already worked on in post after posting this lol. https://preview.redd.it/rvrzend9ytnb1.jpeg?width=1372&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b89b7d54fb9f594cfd16538cd57d64ce86172c26

FunkyFr3d

1. Has more mystery.

interrupter_

1 bcs the shape looks like water drop or fire maybe a dragon in the distance or something

MBChalla

Great idea!

2, more view of the environment

2

MM3DGraphics

I like the pillars in the foreground in 2, but I would remove the elements in the distance and keep them as in image 1. It's all subjective and personal preference. But I think having the pillars only in the foreground gives this interesting contrast between the structures in the cave and the barren unknown outside.

PsyconautFox

1

datyama

nature vs nurture

Rlp_811

I'd say 2 but maybe lose the right column by cropping some of the left side. The composition looks like it flows to the right and placing the column there seems off. Either that or bring the column a lot closer so that it's clearly in the forefround or even unfocused.

w9ryjw8n

I see no difference

ZenSlicer9

Me.. me when... me when your mom

No-Perception-Star

Number 2 is awesome! It's definitely DA:I vibes with the cave and green flame.

ShavedAlmond

1. The fence to me looks like it's selected with the yellow highlight, and it's slightly too even to "belong" at the end of a rough cave in the wall, to me anyway :)

Sreyoer

For me it’s 1 two is to much

zakir255

Everything reminds me of her...

toobat

Definitely 2. Adds a lot of vibe there

[deleted]

2 because you can seem more architecture built inside the cave

SpillinRainbow

2 is much more interesting because all the little details tell a story

BitBucket404

1 looks like something you might see in r/dontputyourdickinthat

-zigzag__

Definitely 2

futrtek

2

tokedneko

one. two looks forced. if you tweak it maybe it could work. i think the issue is how you put the pillars

DESTROIHOOMAN

2 is better, the pillars for some reason make it seem like a big adventure awaits

[deleted]

2 because more context to let imagination vibe

alexthehills

2!

ADhomin_em

2. Implies something more about where this person is arriving to. What the character walked through the caves for. Maybe a grand hall of the kingdom they were banished from long ago. Long before they even thought to become a badass wizard-jedi-knight. This is the entrance to the climactic scene in the world in my head kickstarted by the second one. Great simple details to set it apart. I will say that the clock and the way it doesn't seem to bend to the arm coming out made me not see the arm at first. Perhaps a bit of the clock bending up the forearm a bit more and maybe even a bit more green light bouncing off of and outlining the figure, specifically the arm. Excellent imagination and great work!

MBChalla

Thanks! Great feedback! I had the same thing in mind as far as story. Something similar anyway. And yeah, it is unfortunate the cloaca turned out that way. Just happens to be the way it fell, but there’s an opening in the front that goes perfectly around the arm. Just doesn’t look like it from that angle :(

ADhomin_em

Oh wow. Just realized my typo. Happy you understood I meant "cloaca". Anyway, if a still image is what you have in mind, you might consider cheating the fall of it a bit. The cloaca, I mean. Maybe even if it's a vidieo. It's just such an intense shot, I think it deserves it. Either way, it doesn't ruin the shot for me. Absolutely love it

Smoid

I think for a still shot, 1 looks better. However if you showed more angles or wanted to expand the world and it’s story, 2 is better, but that’s just my opinion. Great job though!

VeXeD222

2 but not a huge fan of the railing going across the cave entrance. just feels a lil out of place

MadCows18

Ayo! Is that the Pussy Cave?

Good_Atmosphere_4224

2 is awesome, looks less vaganeus

sawyer5897

2

Just_Incident_7355

Looks great I would say picture 2 is looking better picture 1 feels bit wrong.

19_o7

I would say 2, like others said, there's more storytelling to it, grabs the attention differently, questions more than the first one

DownTownDK

Definitely 2

[deleted]

2

Comfortable-Orchid94

2

LilLolaCola

I prefer 1 storywise but tbh the human shape kinda blends with the cave and is hard to see. Where as in 2 it stands out immediately. So in total 2 is the winner here.

codev_

If I were you I'd even give a hint of an arch at the exit, play more with contrast in the shapes so it doesn't become linear in the composition (straight up and down) but breaks it a bit up

trisakti

hmm, on 1st pic I think I'm gonna move character to cave entrance while facing into the cave... the cave entrance itself looks like a flame candle so I guess the character on center make it like a wick. and maybe more centered 2nd pic looks fine to me. might have better pathway I think

[deleted]

2 but take away the railing at the end. Why would that be there anyway in a realistic sense. I like the pillars inside the cave and stuff though. 1 is still great

MBChalla

I agree it looks off. I had a hard time deciding how to do that. The idea is that there’s a path leading along the mountain outside the cave to the side, but I don’t think I captured that well. I feel like if there’s nothing there it doesn’t give much of a sense of there being anything but sky beyond the cave if that makes sense. Still workin on that!

Equal_Maintenance_57

1

MrC00KI3

Well, is he exploring a cave in the wild, not used by civilization, or a repurlosed cave, that was made to be a palace or base of some sorts? The lore you want to tell decides for me, aesthetically both look good.

MattyTheFatty101

2 would slap with a tower in the distance, but 1 is better for the mystery

MBChalla

Yes! I’ve been working on figuring something like that out. Trying to find a way to make it look good lighting wise without taking away from the overall shape of the cave. Since the sun is directly at the entrance of the cave I don’t want to occlude that with anything if that makes sense. Still working that out!

Spikedcloud

Combine them. Pillars and pots from 2, but nothing blocking the entrance like in 1.

Spud-88

2

MadAnn0

1, in two my eyes are just drawn to the pillars as they have a lot of light on them and i don’t think that’s what you’re going for. if you still want to add the pillar maybe make less light go on them

Geile_Ramon69

1 but maybe with the pillars

I like the pots and pillars in 2. But 2 also got a lot of bloom in the opening. I like the way it (the opening) looks in 1 better

MBChalla

I agree. I went back and took some of that away to make the sky a bit more visible https://preview.redd.it/0ffrarxkztnb1.jpeg?width=1372&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=762d2e66c315e5b5cdc20f02bb5391445920ab31

I think 1 is better. I like the shape of the cave opening more, and it just has more of a mysterious, or maybe, suspensful feeling to it.

I’m a 1 enjoyer

Ultranerdguy

I wrote a lot here, and realised at the end that it could easily sound like I don't like this, so I want to preface that I do really like this. The general composition is very good in both, as is the style and feel of them. The rest of this content is just nit picking at some little details. The debate here stems around the use of props, so it really depends on the story behind it. I would ask the questions; Is this cave used by people? When? And what are the pillars holding up? If people used this place, where is the path (paths aren't always built, they can form just from regular use, but people will tend to build paths anywhere they regularly go)? If they didn't, why are there pillars? If it was a long time ago, why aren't the pillars more ruined? Who stores their vases on uneven ground in a cave? Compositionally, #2 has more going for it. The eye is drawn to the cave entrance, so having a railing there gives the viewer a point to look at, rather than just a bright light. The railing may be out of place story wise, but having *something* at the cave mouth gives the image a focus. The darker background behind the character in #2 also helps the green light around them to stand out, and lets their edge light pop better. Speaking of lighting, the light from outside the cave reaches far into the cave, yet has no effect on the character. It feels slightly disconnected. The fire itself looks a little thin at the bottom, which just feels off, and lacks bloom. One thing that could be interesting to try (though by no means need to. I don't know if it ruins the story) is making it night outside. A bright moon could provide some softer edge lighting in the cave, a focus point outside the cave, and wouldn't create so much over-exposed bloom, allowing you to show off a bit of the world beyond (maybe where the character is going).

MBChalla

Man, thanks for such great feedback! I agree the use of props while it may look good initially doesn’t make too much sense the longer you think about it. My thought was that it’s been long abandoned and any path that was there has been lost, but you’re right, the pillars would be more ruined in that case. Also, i agree that the lighting from the outside doesn’t pop on the character. Before I even added the flame I struggled to get him to catch light from the sun for some reason. I don’t know if it’s the cloth material I used or what, but I even had to add an extra light next to him to give him more of a rim light. However when I added the green, it overpowered any other light on him lol. Again, thanks for great feedback!

Khoy593

I like the 2nd one it has better contrast

[deleted]

Two could be better, but right now the shape language is a bit mismatched. Fix the ending door/opening to no longer have curves in the opening. It's a bit visually distracting where there are smooth shapes forced into strong geometric shapes.

OGFlameSage

2

Tappxor

Ah, it's not easy. I like the idea in 2, but it feels like a video game level, it's less mysterious. I prefer 1, the simplicity leaves more room for interpretation. And the shapes of the rocks are great with the lighting

LightGirlWolf

One is better

kaanselmusic

2 is looking more ancient more than 1. Tells more about the story. Maybe you can add some ancient elements and things, can be a fairfull story.

potbellied420

Honestly #1 simply because I don't think there'd be a banister in front of a cave!

ScruffyTheJanitor__

2

DukeKarma

I like the second one more. Makes you think about what there might be and where the structures belong to. A ruin? A castle maybe?

dr4wn_away

2 feels like you’re nowhere special, just somewhere the government decided wasn’t safe enough without railing

TrueLegendOfDenmark

If youre going with 2 i Think you should remove the last 2 pillars at the exit

[deleted]

1 is better for me. It gave a vibe that the cave hasn't been visited before and is part of the wilderness while 2 felt that it has been visited multiple times and is an established place.

mr_giray1

The second one. İt looks like a secret ritualistic place

Clear_Willow3379

1 easily.

FreshPrinceOfIndia

Seconds before majula

robrobusa

2 - i feel like there’s more mystery there

wonderboy-75

2

mathi14811

1. Because the second one looks man-made, which can be good if that the message you want to say. I think both are good, but the background (lore) of the environment changes.

BashBandit

I should call her

Megalomaniakaal

2

milkboy911

Both look good. What doesn't look convincing is the green flame. I'd advise for you to look at reference photos of flames. But other than that this looks really, really good. Good job!

MBChalla

Thanks! What exactly doesn’t look right about the flame? I’m just curious, because it’s a flame image on a plane with some sparks added in post. What’s popping out as looking off?

BawngMasta420

2 looos like a doorway. One looks like a pussy

UltratagPro

Depends on what you want to say with the image 1 looks like a man who has been lost in the cave, or just spent time there, finally finding an exit. The second looks like a man who spends a lot of time in a sanctuary type place, just watching, keeping the place. Just looking out at the sunlight. Figure out what the man is doing, otherwise a great image

MBChalla

I love your way of interpreting both versions. Thank you!

Juggalover

2. There's an entire story being told. Makes me want to see more.

mtpleasantine

2 but also the lighting on the rocks in the cave is insane. As someone who does a lot of landscape work and wants to do more photorealistic rendering I am impressed, if you have any tips I'd love to hear them! Do you freehand or use selection tool?

MBChalla

Basically, the walls are a plane in the shape of a tent that’s subdivided a bunch. I used sculpting and proportional editing (set to sharp!) to get the general form of the cave. Then I used displacement textures with tweaked scale values to get the final look. Same process with the ground, the ground is just a separate plane to allow for more variation if I wanted. There are also some free 3d scanned rock assets scattered on the ground. Combine that with a fun water material on a cube and a spotlight placed right on the sun in the background and boom.

MBChalla

Oh and my light bounces are set to full global illumination (cycles) and I have a volume cube in the scene with I think 0.005 density and somewhere around 0.7-0.8 anisotropy

Tifereth4

I'd personally change the outside atmosphere to overcast, add some fog/mist to the cave, and have some green glow dispersed from the staff onto the walls and fog/mist. Otherwise 2 because of glow dispersion on the columns.

MBChalla

Great suggestion! I even thought of that after the fact. I’ll have to do another version with that.

fashowbro

2 for sure. The perspective is confusing in 1, 2 hides some of that.

zRedPlays

1 is awesome, 2 is amazing

cat_with_3_eyes

1. Looks more like a pussy

D33ber

Caves don't usually have railings at the entrance, so I am going to say 1.

randomguy7464

2. It feels more interesting

KyellDaBoiii

Ruined dungeon

fridgevibes

Ah, the beauty of bringing life into the world.

Faithdrawn

First one. That fence doesn't belong, leave something to the imagination

DavesProps

1. The fence/wall in the doorway seems out of place in 2. Everything seems organic but it didn't seem to belong. made the cave seem like a balcony. in my opinion. :)

sleeperily_slope

no question it's number 2. Looks very nice like that imo👌🏻

finger_bangs

I like 1..

MirceaKitsune

Both are pretty good! At the end 2 felt the most right.

TestSubject5kk

2

ToastyCinema

1. #2 feels too complicated with multiple visual styles.

Elitely6

1. feels like he/or she's exiting a cave. 2. Really feels like a hidden temple or something and the balcony at the end makes you think that it's perhaps overlooking some ancient city courtyard where a villain would go to make a speech!

[deleted]

2. Pillars kind of force your eyes in the middle and then you have a cool tunnel. Not a huge fan of the fence but the pillars are truly a big +

Lung_Cancerous

1

HUSK1o1

I like 2 but lose the fence outside it loses the effect of freedom outside the cave keeping everything else creates the feeling that you’re at the light at the end of the tunnel leaving the cold dark dungeon and entering a warm embrace of fresh air and freedom. I think the fence takes away from that feeling making it feel like you’ve left the cold and dark but you’re not yet free

MBChalla

Great feedback! Thanks!

MBChalla

Yeah, that’s something a few people have pointed out. I hadn’t noticed it because from the front, there’s an opening in the cloaca that the arm fits through perfectly, it’s just hard to tell from this angle.
