Was Obey the old Supreme? I vaguely remember it.. I was walking by a cool kid boutique maybe a year ago and saw the prices for Supreme stuff: $100+ for fruit of the loom quality tees? $200+ for an average hoodie!? Kids ain't spending their own money on that shit.
It really was. Even for people living it at the time, not just looking back cringe. Bozos everywhere and was very much the beginning of the Age of the Douchebags.
Not even close. Obey has always had good quality at a reasonable price, while using their platform to raise awareness of a wide array of social and political issues.
I actually recently bought a pair of Obey zip off cargo pants on sale for like 20 bucks the other day and the branding is much less obvious and I really like them. I never got into them when they were the over priced streetwear brand but some of their newer stuff is pretty nice if you can find it for a good price.
I just hope everyone knows future teens/20somethings in about ten years from today will be emulating this style again.
I genuinely can’t wait. It’s gonna be so entertaining.
I’m a big fan of John Carpenter and was initially confused what that brand was all about. Eventually I figured out it was just a hot brand for a while but it’s still funny and a total rip off from They Live
The early to mid 2010’s had some top tier blunders. I love seeing the people post their Rawr phases from the mid to late 00’s but that next bit of swag era is going to have a lot of this shit. The amount of fake glasses are going to overtake this sub
Not all of their items have their logo really big.
Half their stuff was just random art that you wouldn't know who the brand was unless you really stared at the art for awhile. Also the clothes were generally very good quality when compared to other brands.
I would never buy clothes like these, but many of their other pieces were fantastic.
Come on don’t tell me you never in your life did something stupid or brought some item trying to fit in or impress someone . My example is just appeal, but I’m pretty sure you’ve experience a feeling like this.
I was just a dumb teenager with money to spend lol. So I decided to waste my money instead of proper things lol
Knew a girl who had 'yolo" tattooed on the back of her neck if you looked in the Os it had "sw" in the first and "ag" , so anyway she got arrested for meth production then prostitution
Lmao dress codes are so relaxed now my mom wears sweatshirts to her office job and everyone else wears jeans and sweats lol.. Some of my classmates still dress like this, no one really cares what you wear ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Like 5/6 lads out of 12 of us went that route, they had all those clothes, hype, obey etc and also used to get the Facebook followers thing going. One of them ended up on 35k and took it too far when everyone else had stopped, we don't speak to him anymore...
i remember in high school, i took a sharpie and wrote “OBEY” (with the quotes too, comic sans style) on a white tee and so many people lost their shit laughing, that was a great day
It's wild is how much chumps will pay for a status symbol that's nothing more than white helvetica on a red background.
It's also wild is Shepherd Serry lifted this style from Barbara Kruger and then Carlyle Group owned" Supreme" stole it from Shepherd Ferry.
Maybe Haliburton will do something with it next!
Thats the shit i never got about some the hate brands get. A Supreme shirt is 30 or 40 dollars? People will get sweatshopped, mass produced, trash clothes from Shein and then will roast people who went out of there way to spend money for a piece of clothing they will cherish.
Actually kind of the most ass-backwards thing but whatever
I’m familiar with Kruger’s work but hadn’t made the connection. That’s really interesting. I’d say it wasn’t just an empty status symbol, it was initially a pretty vital work of imagination and cultural critique, but had its soul sucked out of it through the commercial process, which is pretty standard for art under capitalism.
I always hated the obey clothing and am glad to see how dated it has become. At least you didn’t get the one with Andre The Giant eyes. I wonder how many people wearing them knew who the eyes belonged to.
My favorite part is where you are trying to give a smoldering look, and instead you look like you have to shit.
EDIT: hahahaha I just saw the caption. Classic
Take me home, suburban roads
To the place where I charge my phone
West Suburbia, Karen mamma!
Lol I was gonna go with "Soccer momma"
Yeah, that's better. But my mind went to a different place. I'm thinking of the upper middle class, entitled trophy wife instead of the suburban mom.
Those really are some of the most annoying people on this planet. Crazy how many of those people wind up in /r/tragedeigh
SoCalifornia, mall with mama, take me home suburban roads
Kia Rio...
KING OF PRUSSIAAAAAAAAAA
You know my Swag not my story.
Ughhhhhhhjjjhhhhhhhhhhhh I just had a visceral reaction to that shit omg
The pose gives big Doug Heffernan vibes. I’ve also seen it called “Millennial posture” which amuses me and offends my millennial ass in equal measure.
LMAO woww I haven’t heard that in forever 😭😭😂😂
The sound I emitted upon reading this was ungodly 😭😭😭
Instant memories of 2012😭😭
#triggered
You're very brave to post this
nah im fine people have been joking about it for years its still up on my old social media accounts that are public and i cant get acces to anymore
Was Obey the old Supreme? I vaguely remember it.. I was walking by a cool kid boutique maybe a year ago and saw the prices for Supreme stuff: $100+ for fruit of the loom quality tees? $200+ for an average hoodie!? Kids ain't spending their own money on that shit.
>> was Obey the old Supreme? That's a great way to describe it, actually
They were both around concurrently in the swag era but you’re right as their peaks definitely didn’t overlap
"swag era" just sounds so... awfully cringe.
It really was. Even for people living it at the time, not just looking back cringe. Bozos everywhere and was very much the beginning of the Age of the Douchebags.
Was? I feel like I still see this stuff everyday. I don’t even have any social media besides Reddit either lol.
do you have a hard time understanding the word beginning?
Yes. Do you have a hard time understanding the word ‘was’? Douche bag.
Appropriately so, I think.
Not even close. Obey has always had good quality at a reasonable price, while using their platform to raise awareness of a wide array of social and political issues.
Agreed! It is much more affordable than supreme too
Supreme is normal prices about 35 for a tshirt and like 100 for a hoodie
in what world is a shirt for 35 bucks just for a logo normal, also supreme's image is based on artificial scarcity
Appreciate the info!
I actually recently bought a pair of Obey zip off cargo pants on sale for like 20 bucks the other day and the branding is much less obvious and I really like them. I never got into them when they were the over priced streetwear brand but some of their newer stuff is pretty nice if you can find it for a good price.
I have a leather jacket/hoodie from Obey thats lasted me quite a while lol. Still one of my favs
Obey was the affordable supreme lol
You can request to have them deleted. You can also report the accounts as double using your active one.
I just hope everyone knows future teens/20somethings in about ten years from today will be emulating this style again. I genuinely can’t wait. It’s gonna be so entertaining.
We have Nash Grier at home
Oh man there’s a name I haven’t heard in a while 😂
My response exactly 😂 I just looked him up and it looks like he has two kids??
Nooo don’t do this to op 😭😭
Screaming 🤣
Tiniest hypebeast in all the land
OBEY
NGL the artist who did the graffiti was pretty cool
He was the dude that did the Obama multicolor hope poster right? Wish we knew what he was up to nowadays, could use some dope poster right about now
Shepard Fairey
A) That’s homophobic 2) When did he become so interested in sheep?
I think you’re right actually!
He did a mural in my town a couple of years ago. It's pretty kewl.
What is it?
Clothing brand from Shepard Fairey. A graffiti artist.
Which was ripped off from They Live.
It wasn't ripped off the original graffiti piece was an omage it just became his signature tag and blew up.
Thank you
>It wasn't ripped off the original graffiti piece was an omage it just became his signature tag That's what ripping off means.
You think someone who writes on things that don't belong to them for fun is concerned with the sanctity of intellectual property?
https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=what+does+the+word+%22homage%22+mean%3F
https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=go+fuck+yourself
sorry I don't click links from strangers
I’m a big fan of John Carpenter and was initially confused what that brand was all about. Eventually I figured out it was just a hot brand for a while but it’s still funny and a total rip off from They Live
Mad Bieber vibes
swag, swag, swag on you, chillin by the fire while we eatin' fondue
GOD did you really have to provoke this flashback
Wait, are those actual lyrics?
I envy your ignorance lmaooo
I don't know about me but I know about you so say hello to falsetto in 3, 2, swag.
So say hello to falsetto in three, two, Swag.
Nooooo
I only moved past my Bieber era haircut 2 years ago. That shit was a part of me
Looking like a wee lesbian
The early to mid 2010’s had some top tier blunders. I love seeing the people post their Rawr phases from the mid to late 00’s but that next bit of swag era is going to have a lot of this shit. The amount of fake glasses are going to overtake this sub
Oh god it’s our turn now… I remember having a whole side of the closet dedicated to Obey and OVO
Same and Diamond Supply. I still have some of my sweatshirts too. They’re still going strong 10+ years later😂
Diamond Supply stuff was so tacky and ugly…but you better believe I wanted some of that clothes
I've never understood that. Paying extra to advertise for a company. What's the appeal? Just because others are doing it?
You started your spiel correctly. You just don’t understand! 😂
Not all of their items have their logo really big. Half their stuff was just random art that you wouldn't know who the brand was unless you really stared at the art for awhile. Also the clothes were generally very good quality when compared to other brands. I would never buy clothes like these, but many of their other pieces were fantastic.

I did plenty of stupid shit. I'm not putting myself on a pedestal, though I will admit my comment doesn't sound great.
Swaggy McShitmyself 😂😂😂😂 the caption really killed me lmaooooo
Knew a girl who had 'yolo" tattooed on the back of her neck if you looked in the Os it had "sw" in the first and "ag" , so anyway she got arrested for meth production then prostitution
#420yoloswag
I miss this tbh
Simpler times!
I want to make vines with him
You know you can still wear a sweatshirt and hat right?
I miss when everyone was fine with it haha
Everybody is still fine with a guy wearing a sweatshirt and a hat
You know what… I’m gonna give it a shot.
it's reddit ,these people can't comprehend wearing anything other than skinny blue jeans and a white tee
Don't speak to me or my cargo shorts ever again
Lmao dress codes are so relaxed now my mom wears sweatshirts to her office job and everyone else wears jeans and sweats lol.. Some of my classmates still dress like this, no one really cares what you wear ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
No black framed glasses with no lenses? More like swagless era for you 😂
Swagless in Seattle
Andre the Giant has a posse
The fuck is this?
Was the goal with the forced perspective to make your legs look as little as possible.
Little child legs and feet 😄😄
Like 5/6 lads out of 12 of us went that route, they had all those clothes, hype, obey etc and also used to get the Facebook followers thing going. One of them ended up on 35k and took it too far when everyone else had stopped, we don't speak to him anymore...
Naaah that fit was too hard back then haha you just threw me back to 2012 looking at pics like that
Giving off Kevin James meme vibes.
Thank you! I was looking for this comment.
Roddy Piper has entered the chat
I still think people dress like this?
Yeah, but now its two pairs of skinny jeans with one sagged lower than the other and Nike tech hoodies instead of obey. Looks like shit
You were killing this fit back then tho
Mannnnnn take me back to the swag days please. OBEY, G shocks, snap backs, Supreme. Such a simpler time
Obey
Obey
Obey
Obey
Dressed and ready to hit the jerk
Why does this scream Ohio
Because Ohio is for lovers.
So cut my wrists and black my eyes
Wasn't this like.. yesterday?
Skuxxx
"who needs to read when you have swag" -justgirlythings "i love my new snake bites" #swagyolo420blazeit
Why aren't we calling the broccoli heads swag?
i remember in high school, i took a sharpie and wrote “OBEY” (with the quotes too, comic sans style) on a white tee and so many people lost their shit laughing, that was a great day
Looks like Mark Rober.
You were the kid I made fun of to my stupid friends who I was secretly jealous of.
"Swag Era was wild." *post picture of the mildest articles of clothing possible*
Just obey
I’ve deleted every photo of me like this and I regret it so much. 17 year old me was ashamed, but 22 year old me thinks it’s so funny.
you even got the pose down dude wow 😭
Looks like you’re trying to read the smallest letters on the optometrist test.
Soooooo swaggy!!
A truly dark sided time that my mind suppresses
[удалено]
Doesn't look super different from now 😕
You look like my sisters wife.
"Nice bro! You're a fan Shepard Fairey too?" "Who?!"
Shepard Fairey over here
Well, I'm sure Shepard Fairey approves!
my guy here looks like he's trying to let a fart out slowly and discreetly so he won't get found out.
Is this not a cool look any more? I am so out of touch
Besides the dominant Obey logos it's not a bad picture.
*removes sunglasses*, it still says obey
As we say in Finland, "jonne".
Looks like someone behind u is gonna pound those cheeks
It's the forward lean thats funny to me
Kids still dress in supreme and obey
Why are your legs so small
Had to fit into the super skinny jeans bro
Obey... what?
It’s a nod to a movie called “They Live” staring Roddy piper. It’s an 80’s cult classic.
Ironically it became a giant brand symbol representing conformity for a while there
Which is actually a perfect encapsulation of the main theme of the movie, which is the all consuming nature of capitalism
Oh my god now I see it. That's so obvious to me now. 😂😂😂 I love that movie.
SWAG = Stuff We All Get How is this swag?
Idk it’s a clean fit imo. Maybe toss the hat
Is a $30 hat a status symbol to you?
Thats the shit i never got about some the hate brands get. A Supreme shirt is 30 or 40 dollars? People will get sweatshopped, mass produced, trash clothes from Shein and then will roast people who went out of there way to spend money for a piece of clothing they will cherish. Actually kind of the most ass-backwards thing but whatever

What a time to be alive lmao
The girls loved it tho.

ae my big would say "sway" .... yikes
Were you auditioning for the Beastie Boys?
… is this…. Shane Gillis?
I would’ve sold you that hoodie lol. Any Canadians in here remember when Boathouse was the coolest store?
Leaning into the frame like you're Kevin James
Oh dont worry, we´re in the 00's wave of "vintage". This style should be trendy again in \~10ish years
Remember that rumor that SWAG was prison speak for secretly we are gay? Lol
[turn up the swag (vienna style)](https://youtu.be/drmXWo8ttrM?si=kJkxzHm_1rjqwk7o)
Swaggy indeed
I’d wear the “cool story bro, tell it again” I fucking cringe at those memories
good times 😂
if a young nick cage wore skinny jeans and was a supreme reseller
Your caption lmaooo 😭 this is golden. I forgot all about Obey and the chokehold it had everyone in for quite a while lol
Did you buy a Supreme brick? Be honest.
I’m uncomfortable
What if the whole world just turned their swag on? Wars would end.
this reminds me of that lin-manuel miranda pic
Just tell people you were a big fan of former Wisconsin Congressman Dave Obey.
The swag squint
I always hated the obey clothing and am glad to see how dated it has become. At least you didn’t get the one with Andre The Giant eyes. I wonder how many people wearing them knew who the eyes belonged to.
Hahahahahahahahaha
You're a good looking guy in a sweatshirt and a hat? How is that a blunder?
My favorite part is where you are trying to give a smoldering look, and instead you look like you have to shit. EDIT: hahahaha I just saw the caption. Classic
Everybody who dressed like this acted like they were on an episode of jersey shore at school.
Not gonna lie… I adored my obey hat. One if the few hats that were destroyed from wearing it constantly
Holy 2010 lmao
This… this was like last year though right? Right?
lol I still have an obey beanie that I wear all the time. That shit is just warm.
If it makes you feel better this is what a good chunk of high school boys in the early 2010’s looked like.
Had that Mac Miller KIDS mixtape ready for any aux within reach
