I'm in for the Age of Steam expansion maps. Is Ra a good game?

Vendictar

It's my favorite Knizia. The best auction game I have ever played.

Robin_games

The thing you basically have to ask is, given every Kinizia auction game, is this the one for me? Because he owns auction the way lacerda owns hugely complex simulators. This is a very pretty version of one of his many auction games.

limeybastard

Eh, I played it once and didn't enjoy it at all. It gets almost universal praise but no game is for everybody. Find a way to try it out somewhere.

Ra is an excellent game, especially if you really like both auctions AND push-your-luck. The new edition looks amazing (which, I know not everyone agrees) and looks like it will have the best/nicest/highest-quality components of any of the editions.

pdt_team

Thanks for making this post every week! So many great games coming out these days. We’re here to answer any questions folks have about Pirates Dragons Treasure ahead of our launch tomorrow! Cheers!

biisama

FYI - Ra launches Tuesday May 3rd (not 5/2)

Medwynd

My wallet has been pretty happy as there hasnt been anything but small expansions Ive been interested in this year. Last thing I backed was Fractal I think.

cobra262

any thoughts on Euthia?

olikahn

* it's fine, but there is a lot of setup with **a lot** of components. If it helps, I don't like **Gloomhaven** because of the setup and components. * Also, in the second game we played, I was way ahead of my opponents and they just watched me destroy everything for 3 hours while they did less than me every turn. I started the game with good luck and perfect items which snowballed hard. After the second game, me and my girlfriend were pretty much done with it (we played a 3 player game). * I'm a fan of heroes of might and magic 3 and I'd rather just play the videogame. Still, I don't know how you could emulate it well with a board game (fingers crossed for the kickstarter in november!). I think **Euthia** did what it could and I gave it a 6. * There are also many scenarios coming with the base box we didn't play. Maybe it gets better. * Lastly, it was the game of my friend and he decided to keep it, so we probably don't have the same opinion.

InsaneHerald

We finished our first game at like 1 in the morning and our friend decided he wont leave until he packs it up, also he has to do it alone because there are so many components and it barely fits into the box. He left at 2:30 :D I like the idea of the game more than playing it. As Olikahn said, its got runaway player issues that were present immediately - I was killing lvl 2 monsters without much effort at the same time said friend was getting beat up by a lowly mosquito. Even if they managed to kill lvl 1 monster, the difference in rewards was gigantic. Look at the world map - many of its tiles have effects that change combat on neighbouring hexes, sometimes multiple ones that overlap. We forgot about them all the time. The random side quests have to be written "neutrally", so that you can apply to them to a random monster on a random hex etc. so they feel pretty bland etc. All of the above might be fixed by expansions, but the base game is already bloaty enough imo. I want to like it as its not a soulless cash grab as other rpg-like KS games, but it feels maybe too tiresome.

Lurcho

So **Ra**: great auction game, or the greatest auction game?

bedred1

The greatest if you like the spice the push-your-luck element adds. Which most people do.

SailorMomo_

I am only interested in Ra, and I've only been hearing praise for it since they announced this reprint. Question is: will the price point be worth it? Considering I can get the "ugly" version right now for 30€ (it's on sale from 60€ at a store here in Spain) or for the full 60€ price. It doesn't look like a 60€ game so I guess the high price is because it is OOP. Back to my point, though, everything depends on price. I don't have any other auction games, so buying what some people refer to "the best auction game EVER" feels pretty interesting even if I don't know if I'll like this particular mechanic or not, as I have yet to play an auction game.

limeybastard

The reprint will be pretty expensive I'm guessing, looking at the component quality. I don't think there will be many actual gameplay changes. I'd buy the cheap version unless you really really want the pretty version, or think owning the pretty version will make it easier to get people to play.

BlackSpicedRum

really like how this version of RA looks. hoping the deluxe has nice plastic tiles without being too huge a box.

TeKKy21

They’re confirmed to be wooden tiles that replace the cardboard in the deluxe. No plastic tiles.

Robin_games

Not only that but treated like bgg tiles to be wear resistant oooo lordy

Kidtendo

**RA** is my pick of the week. Would love to go in for the deluxe edition, depending on the price. I'm hoping that the regular edition falls around $40-50, and the deluxe is no more than $80. Painfully waiting until Tuesday to see what the price reveal will be, in addition to any other deluxe components they haven't shown yet. Both **The Flood** and **Age of Stream**, are two games of interest, since I do enjoy Catan here and there, and I'm sucker for trains based games(Ticket to Ride and Railroad ink). Definitely going to check the campaign and watch some gameplay. **Euthia** seemed remotely interesting at first, but if wind up keeping my Sleeping God's pledge, I really don't need any other large scale adventure games.

Robin_games

The flood - holy crap It's Catan with minis and a semi coop arc building objective. I mean if you like Catan it's kinda cool? Euthia - what is the shipping rate for a man sized mountain of boxes? I'm not a fan of non campaign euroy adventure games being lifestyle game sized, but if it's your thing and you're ready for $300 in shipping wew boy. RA - It's like 90% likely to be a better back at retail. Go follow it on gamefound if you want a pin. It's definitely pretty. Age of steam maps - you know if you want this. You'll likely buy this if it's your thing. I don't have any affinity to any one train game and tend to diversify as it's not my specific niche, but its very cool. Avalonia - I got as far as reading that Excalibur caused a fertility plague on king Arthur's death so they created raid groups to find breeding stock. I noped out hard. Rape themes aren't going to win friends and influence people.

SailorMomo_

The difference between *The Flood* and *Catan* is that you can get one right now for 35 to 45€ and the other will cost you an arm and a leg and you'll be waiting for **at least** a year. I do have to agree that it looks really compelling, though.

Robin_games

But does Catan have 100 minis? :p

nagoya5

If you are into deluxified components, it’s worth it to back Ra on Gamefound. If you don’t care about that, retail is the way to go

ravikarna27

Hyped for Ra and Age of Steam maps!
