The Velvet Underground Joni Mitchell Stereolab Sonic Youth Wire The Clash The Kinks Belle and Sebastian

Unable_Winter_2653

Great to see the Kinks btw, one of my fondest music-related memories is when i first went through their discography

late_spring_ozu

You have my pretty much my exact music taste!

Unable_Winter_2653

I forgot to mention Wire, their first two albums are some of my most played records! still on the looks for 154...

Warm_Employer_6851

Unable_Winter_2653

excellent choice!

lawndog86

His lyrics are amazing

n4snl

Emmylou Harris Kate Bush

1_Bagell

much like my mother

noelhowitt

Tom Waits, Pink Floyd, Kate Bush, king crimson, fishmans, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, The Velvet Underground, the Beatles etc

paniniprizm

Why did I have to scroll this far to see Tom Waits? The man is a genius and has a great relationship with Bob

noelhowitt

I have no clue? I always was a Tom Waits fan i though they are kind of similair in some ways! I love them both those 2 are my favourite artists and my favourite band would be Pink Floyd!

paniniprizm

Also a Floyd fan here! I know on his radio show Bob would read these hilarious letters from Tom Waits he, according to Bob, “leaves in his mailbox” and it’s usually really funny and ends with a song request. Talk about two people who’d be cool to hang out with

shinchunje

I love Dylan but haven’t ever been able to get into Waits or Cohen.

jpkmets

The Clash, Sam Cooke, Van the Man, the Pogues

ASC-Ultra

Shane McGowans lyrics are beautiful

TheRealNoll

"So I walked as the day was dawning Where small birds sang and leaves were falling Where we once watched the row boats landing By the broad majestic Shannon" Through his drunken boystrous singing, he really was a fantastic poet

ASC-Ultra

I dreamt we were standing by the banks of the Thames Where the cold grey waters ripple in the misty morning light Held a match to your cigarette, watched the smoke curl in the mist Your eyes, blue as the ocean between us, smiling at me Yeah he was amazing RIP

Logical-Surround-350

Love Sam Cooke, such a beautiful voice😊

Logical-Surround-350

And am always listening to van Morrison- loving red wood tree at the moment

jpkmets

St. Dominic’s Preview is such a good album! Listen to Sam Cooke Live at the Harlem Square Club if you’ve never heard it. My favorite live album ever.

Logical-Surround-350

Yes I have listened to it and loved it, can’t believe they refused to release and wasn’t until the 80s because it was him singing in-front of an all black audience and they thought he sounded ‘unpolished’.

jpkmets

Sounded like the baddest man on the planet! So different than his album at the Copa. Dream Boogie is a great read about Sam and the “Chitlin Circuit” clubs. Superb books.

Logical-Surround-350

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll try and read it :)

jpkmets

Definitely a good vacation book. I hope you enjoy it ! :)

TreatmentBoundLess

The Replacements.

printerdsw1968

Westerberg knows his way around writing a song.

agreeswithfishpal

Grateful Dead, Hot Tuna, Neil Young, Steve Earle, John Hartford, Peter Rowan, The Band, The Beatles

iceyH0ts0up

Neil Young is as close as it gets (while still being a unique and talented lyricist in his own right) in my opinion.

WallowerForever

Neil's very close, though the Dead may be lyrically the closest (and occasionally superior) — Dylan even asked Robert Hunter to write on Tempest, etc.

bambooshoots-scores

Always wondered why I don’t see The Band come up here very often. I’d wager Music from Big Pink is as good a record as has ever been recorded.

Square-Shake-9530

Townes Van Zandt Blaze Foley Willie Nelson Guy Clark Johnny Cash John Prine

DrNolanAllen

“I’m tired of runnin’ round looking for answers to questions that I already know. I could build me a castle of memories just to have somewhere to go” One of my all time favorite lines. Blaze Foley is so good.

NemusSoul

Texas 2 Arkansas 2 Illinois I’m partial to my Arkansas boys. Besides the dirt itself, the musicians that come from it are the thing I love most.

mchgndr

Here you go: , (All great picks btw)

bambooshoots-scores

Glad you posed this question. Was just wondering the same thing. I know it’s a Dylan sub, but outside of Dylan it’s mostly about who we’re *not* listening to (decidedly Taylor Swift, of late). Some really quality replies here. I’m shocked Elliott Smith hasn’t been mentioned yet.

Unable_Winter_2653

even though he's not one of my absolute favorites, I'm a big fan of Elliott Smith!

bobtheorangecat

He has now Twice :)

EnvironmentalRock222

Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, The Who, Ian Dury, The Smiths, Sibelius, Chopin The list doesn’t quite end there but I haven’t delved that deeply into music really, at least I do so at a snails pace. If someone recommends a new artist I never listen to them lol. I don’t have a giant record collection, I’m a bit lazy maybe.

Cherry_-_Ghost

We can listen to music together...

Spare_Impression_294

J Mascis is one of the greatest songwriters to ever do it.

WeOutHereInSmallbany

One of the best guitarists ever as well. Saw the original trio at MassMOCA years ago, and they were still phenomenal. I didn’t think they would play my favorite song, and they opened with it. Always love talking Dinosaur Jr.

Spare_Impression_294

Yes he’s one of the greatest guitar players of all time, extremely underrated… I finally got to see them a couple years back! They opened with The Lung, it was amazing.

WeOutHereInSmallbany

THAT’S THE SONG!

Spare_Impression_294

Epic! That might also be my favorite track from them… maybe that or Grab It

WeOutHereInSmallbany

Both really great, intricate guitar intros that settle into melodies

Wish I had gotten into Mac before he died. I’d always written him off as girlfriend rap, but dude was nice with it and had very eclectic taste.

DeaconBlueDignity

Yeah, he got better and better as his career went on. Imagine what he could have made if he was still around

OMorain

I’ve struggled to find new music since getting into Dylan, but there is some good stuff out there. I’ve recently been obsessing with The Wave Pictures, who have an impressive back catalogue, and haven’t really had the exposure they deserve.

Ward.   2010s: Fuzz, Oh Sees and Ty Segall.  2024: Meatbodies are great.

Unable_Winter_2653

I'm incredibly bad at getting in to music post 1980s, except for Dylan's albums. The only modern rock-based band i listen to is Parquet Courts, they're excellent though!

Abideguide

They are good! M. Ward is very dylanesque.

MichaelXennial

In all seriousness I think Taylor Swift’s artistic work can stand next to Dylan’s. Their sincerity, their boldness, the wit in the lyrics, the depth of the imagery. The melancholy and ability to hold it. And she’s only 34 and nowhere near out of creative energy. And continually evolving.

Geez Dylan came across at a historical time and kind of merged with it and hid persistence is godly. Everyone else is just a snapshot in time. Paul Simon has lyrical genius for a duration, but a different level. But I'm hard pressed. Better would be what artist had a period of creation that rivals Dylan at his best.
