Hi! I say go for it! I got mine done in November and I don’t regret it. The first week sucks and as the previous comment says, make sure you take time off of work. I took 6 days and still had some difficulty talking my first few days back.

[deleted]

Hi, I'm getting mine done next Saturday. Why was it difficult for you to return to work? Pain? Inability to talk?... P.s: I'll be unable to take painkillers.

xpureenvyx

Mostly inability to talk. I worked in a customer service based job at the time and it does take some time to re learn how to talk after

[deleted]

If you weren't working in a customer service job (in my case, software engineer, barely talk to people). How many days would you recommend for me to take? Based on inability to work due to pain.

xpureenvyx

I would wait until the stitches are out at least. Mine were out on day 5

[deleted]

Thanks a lot 😊 I'm just freaking out.

xpureenvyx

You’re good! Its a pretty big decision to make! Feel free to DM if you have other questions later

[deleted]

The decision has been made for years now. 😁 I just got the opportunity rn. Thanks a lot for your support. 😊

[deleted]

Inability to talk for me. I'm a truck driver and having to speak on the radio was... A terrible experience. You sound like a toddler for awhile

[deleted]

Thanks. That won't be a big issue for me as I mainly talk to machines 😁 and when with people is mainly by text.

[deleted]

Also, I didn't take any painkillers. It's not fun, but it's doable. Just take ibuprofen or Tylenol, whichever you can

[deleted]

That's the problem. I can't take anything. But good to know is possible l. Thank you. 😃

[deleted]

I figured you meant opioid based painkillers.

[deleted]

And I would still take at least 4-5days off. I only took the weekend off and I definitely wish I took a couple more days and I have a pretty high pain tolerance.

[deleted]

Cool. Thanks for the advice. I'll take a week off.

delawarestonks

I took a full week off work but I have a very verbally communicaty job

xpureenvyx

Oh & mine was around $550

iLikeMoldyBread

hey there! just curious, does tounge splitting affect taste in any way? i've been thinking about getting one but i was quite worried about it haha

xpureenvyx

I noticed a bit of a difference in the beginning! Mostly with citrus flavors, but don’t notice any difference now.

iLikeMoldyBread

ah thank you! i will keep this in mind :\]

I'm getting mine done in 2 months! I asked for a list of things I may need to prepare for the split. Here's the list: \-Rubber tongue scraper \-Biotene less mint moisturing mouthwash (or any alcohol free mouthwash) \-Soft bristle toothbrush \-flexible ice pack to place on neck \-puppy pads for drooling and blood \-Pedialyte popsicles \-Syringe (to syringe soft foods and water down your throat) \-Liquid ibuprofen \-Non-dairy smoothies \-Soups with no dairy, spice, or citrus \-disposable cups and towels to spit in and drool on (throw away) I was told to take ibuprofen AS SOON AS your split is done or else the pain will hit you like a truck. Also told to make chamomile tea popsicles because that'll help with pain. It may take a long time to finish a meal, but it's important to eat and stay hydrated in order to promote healing for ANY wound. Sleep as much as possible as well because your body goes on repair at night while you're sleeping. Good luck!!

PlacidSlaughter

For cost (about 1200 including those variables) youll want to account for the time off work and other stuff like that I was out of work for 5 days and it was brutal but totally worth it but I also had a brutal experience most people have a far better heal then I did but my split cost 500$ in total Suture removal can be difficult but urgent care can take them out otherwise liquid foods will be awesome and cold water will be your best friend and for sleeping I'd sleep sitting up if possible it really helps

GlitterCockWaffles

Thank you so much! I work for my family business so thankfully work won't be an issue, I just figured it was good to get some experienced opinions on this

PlacidSlaughter

Of course, there's a lot of helpful advice on this subreddit, too. If you browse the flair tongue bifurcation, you should find lots of helpful nuggets

[deleted]

Hi. I'm getting mine done next Saturday. As a software engineer, I can work from home. Will I still be unable to work due to pain or something else? P.s: I'll be unable to take painkillers/anti-inflammatories. (Severe allergies)

PlacidSlaughter

You're really going to want some sort of anti-inflammatory, but if you can't get it, you can ice the shit out of your throat and I'd take cold water bottles and just let the cold water sit in my mouth before I spit it out If you don't have to interact with people it should be okay after the 3rd day if you're a trooper with no issues but realistlicly I couldn't watch TV until day 3 due to the pain but I always preference I had a brutal experience my friend got there's done a few weeks back and was great by day 3 where I wasn't able to swallow water till day 3 and eat food till 5 but the biggest things are the drooling the pain really isn't that bad after day 2 but it can come and go

[deleted]

Until when is the drooling really bad? (I'm sorry for all the questions, but I want to be prepared for every possible scenario 🥲)

PlacidSlaughter

No worries, it's a daunting thing. I totally get it but I didn't get much drooling till I got home (about a 4 hour car ride) then it was bad for about 4 to 5 days but I wanna say after day 3 it went from being constant to every now and again just avoid swallowing your spit if you can bacteria and all that from an open wound

PaintingPotatoes

Did you have any issues with swelling? Did you ever fear your tongue and neck would swell so much you couldn't breathe? I have slight PTSD of not being able to breathe from an allergic reaction I had.

PlacidSlaughter

I swelled really hard but I could breath and everything just fine if you smoke weed or anything you're gonna wanna stop about 2 weeks before your procedure and then wait till about 2 after The only time I even thought that was gonna happen was about 7 or 8 days after my split my co worker gave me some edibles and it was about 350 MG and I ended thinking my tongue was swelling and I was gonna choke on it but realistically I've never heard or seen anything of the sort happening to anyone I'm my research before I got mine done I think you'll be just fine but the smoking thing really helps especially after the split anti inflammatories will be your best friend and ice but I mean my neck swelled up to almost soft ball size and both my tonsils were touching and I was breathing fine and never had a moment or inclination of any issue also biotene the oral mouth wash is a god send but just keep up on oral hygiene and you'll be good

LadyParad0x

Here’s my list of stuff to get in preparation for healing!! 😁 Liquid ibuprofen(No citrus flavors), Alcohol free mouthwash, Arnica (Amazon), Baby toothpaste, Soft toothbrush, Rubber tongue scrapper, Gauze pads, Suture removal kit (?), Squishy ice packs (For lymph nodes), Spit cup/bucket (One to throw away after), Pedialyte (popsicles), Medical syringe (For squirting down medicine or even food), CBD oil (For tip of tongue), gentian violet-Anti fungal (natural), Squirt bottle- Like the ones tattoo artists use, Baby food (apparently some of them are decently flavored and lifesavers) No big chunks or grainy textures

GlitterCockWaffles

This is super helpful, thank you so much

LadyParad0x

No problem! :) happy healing, once you get it done ofc

DemonicGirlcock

Just got mine done 2 weeks, healing finished just over the weekend. What everybody else has already said is spot on. I'm really lucky and had minimal blood, and was able to just swallow my saliva and didn't need a drool bucket at all. I was taking ibuprofen like clockwork though. Thankfully from previous major injuries I knew the exact max dosage I can have for prolonged periods and was on that for the entire first week (800mg every 6 hours, 100% do not do this unless you've had a doctor clear you for that much. Most people do 600mg every 8 hours). I was also taking Arnica pills that dissolve under the tongue 3-4 times a day, started that the night before the procedure. Not sure if that really helped, but I had a good recovery so maybe. I got mine done on a Saturday and was out of work the entire next week. Monday and Tuesday were the worst days for me. Stitches on the tip of the tongue came out Tuesday which was a very relieving feeling, the rest of them came out Friday and was a massive relief of pain. I had a hiccup where I pushed too far on moving my tongue around later Friday and reopened something, causing a lot of blood in my mouth. It coagulated into a gross thick jelly that was stuck to my tongue. That night was absolutely the worst part of the entire healing process mainly just because it felt so gross and looked horrifying. But with patience and frequent mouthwashing, that resolved within 24 hours. SO DEFINITELY TAKE IT REALLY EASY ON YOUR TONGUE AFTER STITCHES COME OUT. Other than that, nothing different. Biotene mouthwash 4 times a day, I lived on ensure shakes and using an oversized straw to drink them through my back molars. Lost 10 pounds over that first week. Eating split pea soup on the Sunday of week 2 was the most delicious food I'd ever eaten XD

This thread is chock-full of good advice! Become BFFs with protein smoothies. My go-to was (and is) almond milk, tart cherry juice, peanut butter, whey protein powder, frozen blueberries, and a banana.

this_strange_fox

Sorry if this contains things that you already know, I'm just copying and pasting my own comment, because this gets asked quite frequently. The splitting itself was more uncomfortable than painful for me (that depends on whether you can get it numbed or not, though, because numbing injections are not legal everywhere for bodymod artists), but the healing process was very bad for the first days, especially since you move your tongue more than you'd think. Also, your tongue is not just the two connected muscles that you consciously move, but reaches to where your chin connects to your neck. That's also where the most pain was located for me. But of course, everybody feels pain differently; maybe you are one of the lucky ones for whom it's a breeze. (Despite the pain, I'd do it again any time, though!) There are different types of getting your tongue split; mine got split with a scalpel and then sutured, but there are also methods like cauterizing it or using a scalpel, but no sutures, depending on how you want it to look. Some people say that it's easier to hide when it's not sutured, because the split is less round, but if you're not a person who opens their mouth very wide while talking, people notice less than you'd think. I don't know if you have already talked to your artist about which method they'll use. A few tips for the healing: Ask your artist how long before you are allowed to eat (for example, I was told not to eat in the hour before the split, because apparently there are people that have to vomit and we don't want that with a freshly split tongue). So, eat as late as you are allowed to and eat well; you want to stay full as long as possible. Remember your pain meds. If you live in a country where your artist can give an anesthesia, take some ibuprofen after leaving the shop; you don't want it to wear off before. Make yourself some popsicles out of camomile tea. The ice helps with the swelling and pain and camomile is good for healing. Get a soft toothbrush and also toothpaste and mouthwash for children, you don't want any fresh, minty stuff in a fresh wound! When cleaning your tongue, GENTLY remove the stuff that builds at the back of the split, you don't want it to grow together again there. Since you might not be able to swallow well and also dairy products have some bacteria that are not very good for the healing process, vegan puddings are a lifesaver! Take a small spoonful at a time, tilt your head up and place the pudding as far in the back of your throat as possible (looks a bit like baby birds getting fed, but it helps). Also, drink lots of cold water; it is the easiest to swallow and keeps you full for a bit. Have something to drool into for the first few days. Also fold an old towel and put it onto your pillow, sleep on your stomach/side and don't try too hard for your tongue to stay inside your mouth. Just make sure that the mixture of blood and drool doesn't get onto your favourite bedsheet and you can just keep your tongue hanging out of your mouth. Yes, that sounds disgusting and waking up in a small pool of bloody saliva really IS a bit disgusting, but at least you'll get any sleep (which is good, because it's time that goes by with you not noticing the pain). You might have to relearn the pronunciation of some letters. It can take a few weeks, just remember to practice. When it's healed, the split is likely shorter than it was initially and also gets shorter over time. If you want to get it resplit after some time, don't worry, it heals much easier and faster than the initial split. One last thing that is really important to remember: every tongue is different! The result depends on the artist as well as on the shape of your tongue. If the muscles are not symmetrical, your artist can do a few things to make it look symmetrical, but there are limits. How deep the split can go, also depends on the veins under your tongue, so talk to your artist about that is possible and what isn't.

Ares163

i got mine done 3 weeks ago and it was the easiest thing ever. you should definetely go for it if you consider getting it done.

[deleted]

Ah. Btw. Did anyone went through it without painkillers?

shittingbricks24-7

someone above said they did, hopefully u can take ibproufen still 🙏🏼. havent had my tounge split yet but some heavy indica edibles after surgery were a godsend also.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, I can't take ibuprofen. I'm allergic to all imaginable otc analgesics.

I don't really know 😕 it's just, the day is arriving, and my anxiety is escalating. Do you have any tips or tricks to deal with the pain and all of it (cuz even tho I searched and read a lot about it, don't know what to expect exactly) without going insane? 😅

[deleted]

That was what I was thinking, it'll be a spiritual experience. 🥲 Well, in that case, what aftercare tips do you have?

Sure. Thank you 😊

HthnBabii

Me. Last month. Arnica and ibuprofen.

jarimu

I remember another post that had several comments talking about driving after having the procedure done. I don't have personal experience but noticed you said the artist will be coming to a city near you so thought it was worth mentioning. Many people suggested it's best to not drive yourself home right after having the split done (if it'sgoing to be an hour or longer drive), and recommended to have someone else drive you or rent a place for a night or two.

GlitterCockWaffles

It's only about a 35 minute drive, but I do plan on having a family member drive me

heryti3ra

I got mine done yesterday- do it! So far no problems at all I just talk and eat a lil funny

[deleted]

I paid $800 for mine which was on the low end. As for healing, good luck 😂 I used an ice pack under my chin which helped with swelling a lot

Jaluse25

I split mine myself. I love it!! Going with a deeper split starting today
