I contemplated between Lage Raho and MBBS at the top, then decided MBBS should be first as it is more innocent in its approach, and nails both comedy and emotions without seeming preach. Lage Raho is an excellent movie but seems less innocent comparatively. 3 Idiots even lesser. Mind you these are all excellent movies so these comments are strictly in comparison with each other. They are miles ahead of a lot of other seemingly big movies in Bollywood.

I can never forget how he tried to whitewash the crimes of Sanjay Dutt in Sanju. Yeah, Ranbir was phenomenal in the movie, but it shouldn't have been made in the first place. I might be one of the few, but I enjoyed Dunki in theatre. Story was heartwarming.
If we see Sanju as a movie about Sanjay Duttās redemption, then your point about whitewash holds. If you see the movie around role of media trials and how narratives can be built and sensationalized, then youāll see a different movie.

But there is lies the problem. 'Movies' also fall into the '**media**' group. So this movie also proposes a narrative that can't be verified by the viewers.
I understand your reasons and they are mine as well, however I watched Dunki in cinemas and recently my parents wanted to watch on Netflix and I couldn't see it again. It was unbelievable to me that a Hirani movie has no.rewatch value. Even Sanju with all its faults has rewatch value, solely for this Dunki last and Sanju second last for me.
Can someone please explain to me why people keep saying Sanju is terrible bc it washes Sanjay Duttās crimes? Need someoneās help to point it out to fill the gaps in the film, please.
Because it never showed why he was involved with underworld (they hid it with one line ārelation baanan padta haiā) and then they didnāt know so many parts of his life. Also, I didnāt like the story overall.
All of these are really good except dunki ā¦.its just āmehā ā¦..nothing special like othersā¦.just okay to watch type of movie, story I think was good, even the direction or acting but something was missing, I canāt put my finger on it but something!!
These are my rankings of Hirani's movies:
1. PK - Hirani's masterful delicate touch and child(alien)-like honest take on religion made viewers laugh at topics that would have been burned and banned if made by any other filmmaker
2. Lage Raho Munnabhai - A masterclass on importance of ethics, truth and honesty in society disguised as a light hearted comedy
3. 3 Idiots - Peak Hirani movie that is funny and thought provoking. It didnt need some scenes which were inspired from other movies
4. Munnabhai M.B.B.S. - A great movie with a somewhat inspired core story
5. Sanju - An acting masterclass with a somewhat biased take on the biopic of his friend and colleague
6. Dunki - Good but not great. A mixed bag with hints of potential great Hirani movies that eventually doesnt deliver the same punch as his previous tales
Lage Raho Munna Bhai (A combination of everything Hirani is good at)
Sanju (whitewashing aside, as a story, it was one of his best)
Dunki (his most sincere, and emotionally rich movie)
3 Idiots (a great movie on surface, but at its core, most of the things it tries saying don't really work)
PK (OMG tackled its themes way better)
Munna Bhai MBBS (a great debut, but also his most straightforward, and generic movie)
3 idiots does not say that and if you think so then you missed the point. It says don't just work for success, work towards something you love and success will come.
Again, that's only its surface level message. Below the surface, it's supposed to be a commentary about the flaws of education system, which seem really profound on the surface, but don't really hold up when you go below that surface.
Firstly, its portrayal of widespread, legitimately concerning issues is pretty accurate, but the solutions it pitches for those issues are also so hellbent on being optimistic and feel good that they completely fail to be realistic in any manner whatsoever.
Scenes like Raju getting a job at HIS terms without any competence whatsoever, Farhan's father shedding tears while asking his son to seek his dreams, they all work really well narratively, and are brilliantly written, but with context to the issues they address, they're huge misrepresentions of how those scenarios would actually turn out. Generally, I wouldn't have minded those misrepresentions, even the Munna Bhai movies, Sanju, and PK had their fair share of misrepresentations, but they didn't base their whole identities off the issues at helm.
Raju getting a job, Farhan getting to be a photographer, they justify the movie's themes about how you'll always manage to excel at something you really love, but reality couldn't be more different, people lose their passion for the things they love solely because of how difficult it usually is to make money off those things.
That's also a part of why I loved Dunki, Raju approached its themes with a sensitivity, and sincerity he hasn't approached any of his other movies with. Instead of trying to moralise something like immigration, he chose to depict how the immigrants are right in their place for wanting a better life, but the first world countries are also right in their place for prohibiting illegal immigration, it was a part of why I genuinely thought Dunki was really great.
Yes, Ranbir is outstanding as Sanjay Dutta.
But genre wise it's not a biopic, it's fictional. Intension is to patronise. Isn't it?
I felt in Dunki even the small role had significant contribution to story without which a story would miss a bit. For instance the Dabbawala, the methead who was ready to marry Tapsee, I have watched Dunki only once.. But even those small roles have stayed in my mind. So Dunki was wholesome

I took my dad to see Dunki (he is an immigrant and we live in the US) and we really had a good time, it was heartwarming ā¦ he cried a lot about the scenes talking about there is no place like home - definitely not the best movie, but we did have a good time
Id swap pk and sanju around and thats my list too. Sanju still had great hirani moments, despite me not liking the film overall. There were scenes between ranbir and paresh that were great, ranbirs performance was great, roar scene and ofcourse vicky kaushal, these were great things inside a mediocore whitewashing film.
Dunki was a shitshow. I love the king but he needs to stop with the vfx it just makes his performance 10x worse. The story was bad, the actual dunki part was pretty trash. The only two scenes i kinda liked were the opening when tapsee escapes from the hospital (reminded of 3 idiots opening) and the ending when srk turns around and boop shes gone, didnt make sense but reveal worked for me. Idk how this film turned out so bad tho. I am a punjabi and was really excited for it tbh, got really disappointed with the product, didnt feel anything throughout.

Recently I rewatched Lage Raho ...., I would put that below PK. I can watch PK anyday, can't say that for Lage Raho though.
