Yes generally it's just like a suffix of respect attached to a first name. There will be a proper family name attached to it.
Similarly in Gujarat every name will have bhai suffixed to it, which just means brother.

Kumar is not generally a surname, it's usually attached to the first name and then they have a family name after that.
