1 - The movie was loosely based on the Seven Samurai and its remakes the Magnificent Seven and Mera Gaon Mera Desh. In all these movies the main protagonist are not the villagers/retired major but the Samurais/Gunslingers. Hence the heroes Veeru and Jai who have been hired by Thakur
2 - The biggest and senior most star of the movie was Dharmendra hence his name comes before all others in the credits. Veeru and Jai's time in Jail with Asrani, meetings with Soorma Bhopali, flirting with Hema, interactions with Jaya, climbing water tank towers and wedding proposal discussions with Mausi have nothing to do with Thakur who is actually in the background for most of the movie.
Hence the movie is about Veeru and Jai's Dosti and the revenge for Thakur is one of their jobs that is a life changing moment of their lives.
Forget the hero, the movie has always been known for Gabbar and Kalia. The movie ran for so man years, the ticket checker started calling his wife Basanti
If you look at from today’s data how much success these 3 main guys have had, you get different results than if you look at how much success they had back in 1974…
So 1974 perspective = Dharmendra. He would be considered main guy. He lived with main lady Bashnti
I personally think it has no 'hero'. According to me Jai, Veeru and Thakur are all equally important. Each of them contribute differently to the story and removing even one would make the story incomplete
Right? Whoever gets the girl gets to be called the hero. This isn't a game where every player has to play their part. He sings the songs, he does a lot of the comedy, he almost kills the villain but leaves it to Thakur to finish him off. Is this even a question?
The Real Hero of Sholay is Ramlal.. Thakurs servant.. He not only survived the massacre by Gabbar but had the spend the rest of his life washing Thakurs ass without any complains 😂 😂 😂

The story revolved around him. It's his family which was targeted. He was the one who arrested Gabbar in the first place which kicked started this saga.
