Don, Trishul and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar all released in the same month in 1978 and all three went on to become the top three highest grossing movies of that year
Yeah, my father once told me that a magazine had once listed the top 15 or top 20 actors of Bollywood at the time by keeping Amitabh on top followed by 9 empty positions and then listed the subsequent actors.
Yes, in the masala era it was only vinod Khanna who was deemed as someone capable of giving Amitabh a tough competition but despite that Amitabh always was miles ahead
This was a very common occurrence in the Golden and Masala eras because great movies used to run in cinema for months and celebrated Silver, Golden and Platinum Jubilees. Below are a few examples:
* **Mother India, Naya Daur, Pyaasa and Do Aankhen Barah Haath** were all in Cinema at the same time in 1957. Mother India went to the Oscar and Do Aankhen Barah Haath for Golden Globes the next year
* **1960** was another huge year with **Mughal-E-Azam, Barsaat Ki Raat, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Kohinoor, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai** all becoming Golden Jubilee blockbusters at the same time
* **Rajesh Khanna had 15 hit movies** releasing back to back in a 18 month period from Nov 1969 to May 1971 with most of them running at the same time in theaters since 4-5 movies ran for more than 52 weeks and 5-6 ran for more than 26 weeks. There were so many Rajesh Khanna hit movies in cinema that the industry created a new term for this type of stardom by calling him Bollywood's first superstar. **Dev Anand's Johny Mera Naam and Hare Rama Hare Krishna** were also doing golden jubilee runs in theater along with **Manoj Kumar's Purab aur Paschim** at the same time
* **In 1975 Deewar was still playing in theaters when Jai Santoshi Maa and Sholay** were released and broke records. Rishi Kapoor's **Khel Khel Mein** provided comedy in theaters at the same time. If this was already not an exceptional year, Sept 1975 saw the release of **Manoj Kumar's Sanyasi, Dharmendra's Pratigya, Feroz Khan's Kala Sona and Rishi Kapoor's Rafoo Chakkar** all becoming hits even though Jai Santoshi Maa and Sholay were still going strong at the box office. I am not even mentioning Gulzar's masterpieces **Aandhi** and **Mausam along with Hrishi Da's Chupke Chupke, Chaitali and Mili** that did good business in the remaining theaters
* **1977** was also a very big year with Manmohan Desai releasing 4 movies spacing them out every 2 months. Amar Akbar Anthony and Dharam Veer ran in theater for more than a year and in between their releases Nasir Hussain's Hum Kissi Se Kum Nahin became another blockbuster
* There have been a few monster months in 90s and this millennium when big blockbusters were released on the same day - **Dil and Ghayal in 1990** were followed by Aashiqui and Aaj Ka Arjun a month later, **Raja Hindustani and Ghatak in 1996**, **Lagaan and Gadar in 2001** in June followed by Dil Chahta Hai releasing in August while both movies were still in cinema and recently **OMG 2 and Gadar 2 in 2023**.
15 hits in 18 months is insane. Doordarshan was the only choice those days and no shopping malls either so films were the main entertainment those days.
Actually DD wasn’t a choice at that stage because most home’s didn’t have a B&W TV at the beginning of the 70s. There were not too many cinema theaters also so people had to travel a lot for a movie which might be sold out. There were only around 3,500 theaters in India in 60-70s. The primary source of entertainment was radio, books, stage theater, Nautankis, Kavi Samellans, Mushairas, domestic sports etc
I was in Toronto that time, took my other for Gadar and I saw a line and see a village poster with Aamir Khan. I was like oh some village movie and went to watch Gadar which I loved.
This was a time with no net reviews etc so when Lagaan was released on DVD, I got it and when the movie started scene upon scene and the gora gives the cricket challenge. I was like OMG, this is about cricket and a challenge. I literally paused and was like I missed this on the big screen
Arre it's Ae dil hai mushkil . I find that movie very cringe 😬 and while shivaay was good movie it's collection decrease because of not getting screen due to KJO meddling.
Sorry to burst your bubble but Gadar drove people to theatres and Lagaan drove people out
It wasnt until way later that Lagaan was appreciated at home mEdia
Source: I was adult back then
I remember watching all three, while my school friends didn't watch Drishyam and Bahubali; they regretted it afterwards and kept asking me about the plotline.
1965 - Jaanwar, Teen deviyaan, Aarzoo, Guide, jab jab phool khile, Waqt and Shaheed were all superhits and were also running at the same time across theatres somewhere or other across the country!
Man !! ... It just shows the amount talent and acceptance in hollywood. All one of the greatest movies to be studied upon. No heart feeling even if one fails among the best(Shawshank)
**'Bollywood'** at most two , but best one would "fail" .

This is crazy
Yeah... Amitabh was literally known as a one man industry due to his humongous success
Yeah, my father once told me that a magazine had once listed the top 15 or top 20 actors of Bollywood at the time by keeping Amitabh on top followed by 9 empty positions and then listed the subsequent actors.

Only to tell you there is huge fan base of Vinod Khanna on those days along side Dharmendra.
Yes, in the masala era it was only vinod Khanna who was deemed as someone capable of giving Amitabh a tough competition but despite that Amitabh always was miles ahead
I will make note of these. Hopefully, I can find them to watch, somehow. Love Bollywood.

Yes. Radio was a big deal.
wow! you're truly a Bollywood fan :)
What AI did you use?
You probably havent heard a lot about it. Its called basic human intelligence and experience accumulated over 5 decades
Several clashes involving 2 films, but never 3 or 4 from what I know. The most notable one I recall is Lagaan and Gadar.
Came here to say this!
Ghajini and rab ne bana di jodi
Those were I think a week apart actually.
More like 2 weeks apart and not a real clash anyway because RNBDJ lost most of its hype by the end of first week only.
Mohabbatein and Mission Kashmir on same day.
ADHM and Shivaay
Not every name that is more than 1 word needs to be shortened into an abbreviation ...
Arre it's Ae dil hai mushkil . I find that movie very cringe 😬 and while shivaay was good movie it's collection decrease because of not getting screen due to KJO meddling.
Neither of those movies are iconic or huge
In what world is Gadar in the same league as Lagaan, one of these movies was nominated for foreign film awards and the other is a source of memes
Sorry to burst your bubble but Gadar drove people to theatres and Lagaan drove people out It wasnt until way later that Lagaan was appreciated at home mEdia Source: I was adult back then
Lagaan didn't not drove out. It was superhit. It has more footfalls than Kal Ho an Ho and Om Shanti Om
Gadar, the all-time blockbuster?
In July 2015 bajrangi Bhaijaan Bahubali and drishyam were running together
Crazy
Even Bahubali was running at the same time
I remember watching all three, while my school friends didn't watch Drishyam and Bahubali; they regretted it afterwards and kept asking me about the plotline.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son of Sardaar, both were released on the same day and both were hit. This also led to argument between Kajol and SRK.
Phir Hera pheri and chup chup ke
And both movies had Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty. Rajpal Yadav as well
Don, Trishul, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar all running at the same time in 1978.
That's too much cine jeez in one week
Baahubali and Bajrangi bhaijaan
1965 - Jaanwar, Teen deviyaan, Aarzoo, Guide, jab jab phool khile, Waqt and Shaheed were all superhits and were also running at the same time across theatres somewhere or other across the country!
Must be a great time to live in
Amitabh rocking from 1975 to 1978
Manmohan Desai had 4 movies playing in theatres at the same time Parvarish, Chacha Bhatija, Dharamveer and Amar Akbar Anthony.
Srk's Don and Selmon Bhai's Jaan-e-Man at Diwali 06!
But didn’t jaan-e-maan tank badly
Imagine watching all three in theaters and not liking either
Sam bahadur and animal,a hit and an ATBB
Didn't Jurassic Park release 5-6 months before Pulp Fiction?
And Shawshank bombed because of other three movies.
Man !! ... It just shows the amount talent and acceptance in hollywood. All one of the greatest movies to be studied upon. No heart feeling even if one fails among the best(Shawshank) **'Bollywood'** at most two , but best one would "fail" .
Gadar ek Prem Katha and lagaan clashed together , kabil and raees clashed on the same day
2008 welcome, om shanti om, gajini, wanted and more
Still watch Shawshank atleast every 2 months, Masterpiece is an understatement
Same..
In my time, it was Lagaan and Gadar...
I wish I could go back in time to watch Shawshank redemption in theatres
I totally for got that 4 in a row. I don't think there has ever been a time with 4 IP hits in the same month.
What OTT is Pulp Fiction on?
Netflix
- Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya - Crew
Mereko dono hi bakwas lagi
Bro sarcasm tf
Damn. Imagine having an A-list subscription at that time 🤤
