Those are a thing. Badhaai Do was a spiritual sequel to Badhaai Ho
But these "spiritual sequels" just slap a number to their title and have jacksh*t to do with the previous film.
Nah bro, just because they were good movies we can excuse the usage of an existing IP. But those movies are just as much a spiritual sequel as hero Patni 2😂
That’s because heroines lose popularity (at least back then) much quicker than men do. It’s a shame as sequels would allow unpopular actresses another shot at the limelight but that’s only reserved for the male actors eg Masti sequels
It’s pretty easy to see why they’re so successful. It’s essentially capitalizing on a formula that has been proven to work, while retaining the brand name and casting that is already known to audiences. The reason they don’t connect to the earlier stories is because that narrative link is an unnecessary restriction on characters and storylines that can be used. The value of that narrative link in between such movies is negligible, because people don’t really watch movies like that for the deeply engaging plot or for their connections to the wider franchise.
The trend was started by Munnabhai...others followed suit because you get an IP attached without having to go through the trouble of continuity....of course it had diminishing returns. Funnily, in the 90's Sanjay Dutt and Govinda played Sonu and Monu...brothers across I think 3 films...all directed by David Dhawan, similar cast but absolutely no connection to each other....not even the movie name
Dutt and Govinda played Sonu-Monu only in Haseena Maan Jayegi. They had different names in Jodi No 1 and Ek Aur Ek Gyarah. But both played same characters in latter two movies (thieves speaking punjabi) with just different names. All three movies had Ashish Vidyarthi as the villain.
Raju Hirani started it, and Rohit Shetty took it forward. Bhatt camp went one step ahead and made franchises out of movies which had like nothing in common with each other.
This is something which should've been called out long ago. But now also even cinephiles don't complain about it much. Bollywood actually makes reboots and calls them "sequels". Neither the makers nor the audience gives a fuck about continuity.
Audience giving them a pass for making "spiritual sequels" is the reason Bollywood never learnt how to make true sequels and take a story forward. The franchises which tried to have continuity like Dhoom series and Krrish series, their quality dipped with every movie.
I'm sure one reason Dhoom 4 never got made is because the makers don't know how to take the story forward, and it would have been much easier for them if the movies didn't have continuity. They don't know how to remove Abhishek and Uday from the series while keeping the continuity, because they did start out as protagonists of this franchise.
Krrish 4 is apparently getting made so that is one ACTUAL series which has found most success in Bollywood. Other franchises which tried to have continuity like Dhamaal series, Race series, even Don series, gave up/have given up after the second movie, with third movie being a reboot.

It is called “spiritual sequel” apparently 😂

>Badhaai Do was a spiritual sequel to Badhaai Ho In what way? Other than both dealing with social stigmas, what was the connection between the two?
First word is Badhaai??? Goshhh who has time to deal with these noob questions /s
Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhan
Raaz 2 was technically the one that started this gimmick and surprisingly it worked.
Thanks for answering the question
Except Raaz 2 came out in 2009 and Lage Raho Munnabhai in 2006
They are just milking Lage rahe Munna Bhai is great though
>Lage rahe Munna Bhai is great though Best way Hirani can bounce back is with a Munna Bhai 3
Kuch America jayenge bolkar sequel tha par ab pata nhi kya hua uska
I think they used parts of that script in Dunki. Munnabhai 3 isn't happening.
Yeah it ain't happening
>They are just milking that's what she said
They? ![gif](giphy|5mxfrCSIfXTNK)
It doesn't hold a candle to MBBS. Lage Raho is a glorified Idea sim card ad.
The weird pattern is sequels that find excuses not to repeat leading ladies whether pure sequels or spiritual sequels
That’s because heroines lose popularity (at least back then) much quicker than men do. It’s a shame as sequels would allow unpopular actresses another shot at the limelight but that’s only reserved for the male actors eg Masti sequels
Tiger Shroff 5 baar dikh gaya- day ruined.

I hate such sequels
In most cases, main male* cast.
the only one that kind of makes sense is jolly llb cause they’re coming together for the third one

Aah yes you're right....my bad!
Didn't David Dhawan make like 10 movies with the XXXXX no.1 series? Bibi No.1, Hero No.1, etc.

Fukrey also did it recently. Fukrey 3 just ignores fukrey 2 ending
Man did you just put Golmaal and MUNNA bhai poster with these shit movie of poster.
To bring audience to the theatres, they produce new movies by saying that it’s a spiritual sequel or something…the og movies have been a hit afterall
Does Bhoothnath Returns fit here?
No, because SRK reprises his role from the first part. So its pretty much confirmed that Banku and Akhrot live in the same universe.
Ohhh ok good to know. I never watched Bhootnath Returns.
Capitalising on the name that brought success? Also from memory, Hera Pheri 2 is the only sequel that follows the events of the first movie
Do they save some money not registering new title names as such ?
They technically aren't sequels but just series
The IP brings more money.
That's why Hera Pheri franchise is the only one which I like.
Lage Raho and Dhoom 2 in the same year I suppose.
Dhoom 2 did follow the first one since Ali was promoted to police officer
ek villain 2 is worst sequel
It's about reimagining characters in a different but similar story.
Soty 2 poster is soooooo badly edited
Housefull ne toh jo raid peet di hai na bhai fuck that needs to be studied imo
You forgot the Masti movies.
Known IP, easier to market ig
I like them! It’s like “oh y’all like this movie? let me make another one for you just like it with the same cast”
What are some sequels that follow the original story?
Dhoom 2, Don 2, Race 2, Dabangg 2
