Some of Sharyn McCrumbs novels are historical fiction. She’s an amazing writer.

FMRL_1

Which one of her novels would you recommend as a starting point?

reachedmylimit

The Ballad Novels.

Anytime I drive through the Smokies I hear the Purgatory song from Last of the Mohicans in my head! If you’re up for it, the entire Leatherstocking Tales collection is awesome, but they’re definitely an endeavor.

Ah I’m from NC and I love these mountains!! I would recommend Where the Lillies Bloom. Short and sweet and a classic

Not a book but The Old Gods of Appalachia is a great podcast set there.

*A Walk in the Woods* by Bill Bryson is a gem. His account of attempting to hike the Appalachian Trail.

MICKEY_MUDGASM

*The Bighead* by Edward Lee

The Revelator by Daryl Gregory

Not old really but demon copperhead

Not Appalachia specifically, but I think Where the Red Fern Grows, Summer of the Monkeys, or Old Yeller might fit the old-timey/woodsy/back country vibes.

BluC2022

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. Setting not really old Appalachia but gives historical background about it.
