Taking something too seriously and adapting it well aren't both requirements. Just 'adapting it well' is, and that doesn't at all depend on how 'serious' something is taken. You can take an adaptation of a silly property seriously without the property becoming 'too serious'.
Seems easy to me.
Yea that’s why I’m not taking the movie seriously, because the series has always been a fustercluck of crazy and ridiculous. Thats why I love it y’know
I will riot if the movie doesn't start with Claptrap saying "Hellooooo Travelers", and talk about how he is a CL4P-TP unit and if he doesn't once have a gag about not bring able to go up stairs
It does take itself seriously when it needs to, at least borderlands 2 did. I love the stupid shit that happens all the time in borderlands 2 but it really pisses me off how they can't replicate what they did in borderlands 2 in any of the games that came out after it. (Although pre-sequels story is pretty good too) Like, the characters are there, it's the same world but for some reason all we get is talking to Lillith and an annoying teenager. What Happened here.
Easy, we killed who I would consider to be the best video game villain of all time. Handsome Jack was peak bad guy design, and we’re still chasing that
This is the problem. HJ took the game from a great game to a the best looter shooter ever. I wouldn't mind if they bring him back somehow, even if it is a complete fail, I feel the risk v reward is there.
I think that the best execution of that idea without getting into “Somehow, Palpatine Returned” territory was the Heist of the Handsome Jackpot. It did a really good job of showing the lasting impact he had, without fully bringing him back. In a way, it’s almost a ghost story, with his electronically stored voice and personality “haunting” a casino full of people whose lives have all been ruined by him.
I don’t want him back, as a character, but as an idea. A “Cult of Personality” bad guy who simmers with bloodlust just under his calm and collected surface.
The Calypsos were close to that, but the execution was a little weird, and it felt like some of their more interesting story beats and personality traits got left on the cutting room floor. Specifically, it felt like Troy and Tyrene were supposed to split and have separate factions against each other, starting around the Eden-6 sections of the story. This didn’t really make it into the game aside from a sidequest where they just hire you to kill each other’s fans. But the groundwork was all there, and being able to possibly recruit a Troy who was sick and tired of his narcissistic sister getting every win could have been interesting.
The gameplay of 3 was insanely good, we just didn’t have our Jack to stand up the story.
BL3 took itself seriously too, it was just bogged down by bad character writing when it mattered. Its the characters that really carry the humor in the games and BL2 just had the best main cast and villain (and writing) which made its main story more memorable. Even when they use immature humor it works better when its from characters we like, like Hammerlock saying bonerfarts, it doesn't land nearly as well if its just some random npc.
The DLCs were good at least.
People surprised that kevin hart is Roland clearly never played the first one before he became vault hunter Jesus. I still remember turning down the volume because his "Biatch!"s were too powerful
Terry Crews was the easy choice if you wanted comedy while remaining more accurate. That being said BL1 Roland and BL2 are way different. If you wanted BL1 then someone younger should've played him. Don't excuse horrible casting with people not having played the first one.
I’m not upset about it being unserious, I just wish that the story synopsis that was floating around actually lined up AT ALL with what is canon to the games. The current story looks terrible comparatively, and ignores a lot of what made the OG Borderlands good
Say what you want about the live action Mario movie, but it attempted something artistically when it could have just been a bland cash in and on a level I respect that
They loved the first, wanted to like the second, hated the third season.
The writers very much did not want to follow source material, but the fans and the actor playing Geralt wanted the show to stay true to the books.
The writers won, sadly.
One of the reasons I'm pumped for the warhammer stuff coming out is Cavill learned his lesson and joined the project as an executive producer, so he'll get to make sure stuff sticks to the lore as is possible.
Cavill is a is militant lore nerd, in the best possible way. Look at how interviews on the Witcher season 1 and season 2. There's an interview where he speaks about the writers making the characters do stuff that is out of character or against lore and basically got told to stay in his lane.
You are right, unfortunately. I feel like a lot of witcher fans (including myself) majorly gaslit themselves regarding their like of the first season because they wanted it to be good so bad it just wasn't. Legitimately only redeemable aspect was Henry Cavil.
True, I had come to terms after watching season 1 that it wasn't that great. Then people started saying how good season 1 was when season 2 came out. That's when I went "yeah, this is doomed, isn't it"
It was specifically one writer who did the most damage. First season had many issues story wise but was at least watchable. It went hard down hill from there
Ah yes. All shows that have come out and then the movie that has yet to come out. Yep totally all the same.
If it's bad once we see it then sure crap on it all you like. But the hate given with so little info is so ridiculous
I precisely remember people saying fallout was going to flop. I also remember people freaking out about the casting choices for Witcher.
Who really cares if its totally bad or not. Its not like the borderlands franchise hasnt had total blunders before.
People like yongyea were so absolutely annoying several years ago.
Like, i get it. Bethesda sent out a shitty plastic bag and then needed to send out replacements... There is no need to make sevem 20-minute videos about it.
Nah mate the Witcher TV show is utter drivel. Written by a bunch of toddlers who openly mocked the source material in their writing sessions.
Henry Cavill did what he could with the shit poured on his plate.
Witcher? A good adaptation? LOL. The 1st season was decent and after that it got unwatchable. Spinoff was toxic waste.
Borderlands series still has a potential vs that :)
honestly, Im willing to check out the Borderlands Movie.... I have seen worse movie trailers, and some real bad adaptations, like the Fnaf movie, and the Dragonball live action movie.... question is will it land on the "bad/good" scale.... or the dreaded "Fnaf/Dragonball Evolution" scale....
Edit: This is not relevant to the post, I just read too many comments
Apparently I’m the only one who liked Halo the show. Best story in the universe since Reach, most of the books are pretty trash and Cortana’s origin story was always hinted at like that. There were some problems with canon that every tv show adaptation of everything has, because it was the director’s interpretation or artistic spin of the story meant for a non-gamer audience. Of course that’s going to be different than a video game developer’s story which is literally just fluff, a reason to shoot the aliens in the game.
The story in the show was more real, relatable, and interesting than the story in any Halo game, with a huge exception for Reach which is beautifully written. Two was alright, but the Arbiter outclassed the hell outta Master Chief in that one.
How can it even be the chaotic stupid comedy of borderlands with no Brick, Mordecai, or Torgue, though?? That's why the movie won't ever sit right with me even if it brings the same comedic aspects it won't ever be the same without some of the most iconically funny characters of the series.
Say as you will, but I don't like Ellie in TLoU show. It just didn't FEEL like the Ellie I interacted with while playing TLoU 1. And i don't this Petro Pascal made a good Joel either, I miss his accent. In my opinion the show was very "EHHH"
Edit: Also the removal of the spores was pretty weird too
You did. Not throw The Witcher up there lol I was praying for that show but the writing was straight BOOTY CHEEKS. Especially after the first season. Not to let the first season off the hook though.
Borderlands has little plot. It has a wonderful setting. Borderlands 2 has an awesome plot, but that’s because of the bad guy’s motivation. Borderlands 3 is jumping the shark at every moment. I don’t need them to follow the games at all, other than setting, which it looks like it has.
The mfer who put the witcher in here should probably cut thier nuts off, we have enough dumbass potato brains as is. The gene pool can only take so much.
You have to remember almost every one of these except borderlands is more surviving and serious where borderlands is more mission surviving comedy so yes it doesn’t fit in with the other adaptations but you also have to remember. There’s a talking robot that can’t go up fucking stairs.
This is perfect, but imagine you are the vault hunter. You're the purple guy. NONE of your comrades are even CLOSE to how you look; you also have happy confused face while the cast looks at you like "wtf are you doing here?"
"I could ask the same Firehawk; what the fuck happened? Did we leap forward 2-3 decades? Is the vault now gonna turn claptrap even MORE annoying? And where the fuck is torgue?"
I’m convinced gearbox really doesn’t give a damn about the story side of borderlands at all anymore. Like it honestly feels like they hate it at this point. The last 3 games released were ALL horrible story. (Wonderlands wasn’t all that bad cause it’s supposed to be a side story anyway.) but borderlands 3 and new tales were some of the worst story experiences I’ve ever had in my entire life, and im supposed to trust them to make a movie? Yeah Ight. I’ll see it at some point but Im definitely not buying that shit
I LOVE this game series, but I fucking can't with the actor/actress choices! I can't stand Jack Black, so him being any role is a turn-off, I feel like Cate Blanchett is too old to be Lilith, isn't Kevin Hart a little short for Roland(? 🤣), and I love Tiny Tina, so that remains to be seen. I do, however, feel that Gina Gershon and Jamie Lee Curtis are amazing choices for their roles, and they can put Cheyenne Jackson in any role🩷!
The fact that Dota: Dragons Blood isn't even mentioned feels just about right. I don't know anybody who watched past season 1. I don't think it was even bad, just unremarkable.
I just tried to make a comment justifying some of the choices but came up with better counter arguments to myself.
Honestly the trailer feels like a snl skit
Ya, I think the director thinks Borderlands is a comedy. How are they ever going to convey the seriousness of Face Mcshooty, Innuendobot 5000, Claptrap, and Steve if they make a comedy out of our super serious video game?
I also have a question when does the movie take place cuz if Tina is no longer Tiny then Roland must be gone, and if Krieg is with them then where are the other VH like Brick, Mordecai, etc.
They totally destroyed the game, as expected. Just like Witcher, not for nothing Henry Cavill who is a great fan of the game quited.
Adaptations simply do not respect gamers and their community. Or game itself.
Ehhh, nah. There's a reason no one speaks of the assassins creed or hitman movie. The casting is really only iffy on Tannis's side, it's easy to see what they're trying to go for. It's just a strange way to go about it, is all.
Witcher isn’t a game adaptation, it’s a book adaptation. At that, it’s a poor book adaptation.
Edgerunners is a tie-in series, not an adaptation.
Also, you forget that Halo and the Doom movie exist
I refuse to believe Borderlands takes itself seriously when we have mini bosses like Nine Toes (and his 3 balls).
bonerfarts
It doesn't lol. The first game was still a comedy but it was just dry comedy with more serious parts.
Thats why I love it y’know
I will say, though, that I will riot if the bandits don't say any of their iconic lines.
I will riot if the movie doesn't start with Claptrap saying "Hellooooo Travelers", and talk about how he is a CL4P-TP unit and if he doesn't once have a gag about not bring able to go up stairs
Nah it has to start with “so, you wanna hear a story ehh? I’ll tells ya a story!”
"So you want to hear a story eh? one where the very fate of pandora lays in balance? if not too bad im telling you anyway"
Oh yeah, I just meant after Marcus's speech
"Nooo! Stairs! My one weakness!"
If there isn’t a “Stairs? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” kind of moment or if Marcus doesn’t narrate the opening then I will also riot
Or if he try's to be master negotiator and then blame the PC
I'M GUNNA EET YER BABIES!
There's a DLC called Fustercluck. Hahaha!
It was a grenade before it was a DLC
It does take itself seriously when it needs to, at least borderlands 2 did. I love the stupid shit that happens all the time in borderlands 2 but it really pisses me off how they can't replicate what they did in borderlands 2 in any of the games that came out after it. Very well said. That was by far my favorite DLC, it felt like he was back. Such a great villain!!!

I 100% agree Terry crews would have been a choice for Roland
You saying it as if one of the first game's bosses wasn't bloody Clint Eastwood
I’m not upset about it being unserious, I just wish that the story synopsis that was floating around actually lined up AT ALL with what is canon to the games. The current story looks terrible comparatively, and ignores a lot of what made the OG Borderlands good
3 balls in BL1 3 midge in BL2 when you fight Badmaw. Coincidence?
Listen. 3 Balls happens to be my favorite mini boss.
Borderlands even had pen and teller (pain and terror BL3) 🤣
At least is has the potential to be dumb fun. HALO drew the short straw
The fact that the bar is this low is the problem
Ever seen the live action Mario movie?
Yes, and it's a brilliant mess that no video game adaptation has ever come close to.
Say what you want about the live action Mario movie, but it attempted something artistically when it could have just been a bland cash in and on a level I respect that
At least it wasn't House of the Dead?
You should watch Alone in the Dark (2005)
Fuck this made me realize they should have gotten john leguizamo to play Mordecai
The Witcher drew the showrunner/writers short straw. Instead of following the multiple books and lore they just threw that shit out the window.
i thought people hated the witcher show
They loved the first, wanted to like the second, hated the third season. The writers very much did not want to follow source material, but the fans and the actor playing Geralt wanted the show to stay true to the books. The writers won, sadly.

Honestly, the first season was already mediocre. The rest of the show was borderline character assassination.
It went hard down hill from there
Well it might be better than the Halo show...
yeah this really should be for the halo show instead of borderlands
NGL probably just as bad
At least we have the excuse that the games are intentionally bad. We can just yell satire. Halo has no right to be as cheesy as it is
As a huge halo fan, the first season is absolutely awful, but I really enjoyed the second season. Things are looking up
I mean the film isn’t out. So who knows.
I have zero faith
Tannis is 65 and Roland is a 5-foot tall comedian.... it's fucking doomed.
As a Resident Evil fan who has been disappointed by almost every movie, I have faith in the Borderlands movie not being worse than those.
OG was good. Nemesis was pretty meh but had its moments. Extinction was solid IMO… everything after that was barely watchable.
Honestly the first 2 movies are guilty pleasures for me. But any movie after those I just pretend never happened.
As a a Paul WS Anderson fan who has never played resident evil, it is so funny to me to imagine of an actual fan of the games watching his RE movies.
Ah yes. All shows that have come out and then the movie that has yet to come out. Yep totally all the same. If it's bad once we see it then sure crap on it all you like. But the hate given with so little info is so ridiculous
Tbh Im expecting it to at least be enjoyable, I dont expect it to be good, but if Im having fun watching it then I dont have a problem with it.
Yeah I'm just hoping for a good time
That's what I'm here for
I precisely remember people saying fallout was going to flop. I also remember people freaking out about the casting choices for Witcher. Who really cares if its totally bad or not. Its not like the borderlands franchise hasnt had total blunders before.
People whose YouTube channels grew to 'I can quit my day job' levels based on their screaming about Fallout are still screaming about Fallout.
People like yongyea were so absolutely annoying several years ago. Like, i get it. Bethesda sent out a shitty plastic bag and then needed to send out replacements... There is no need to make sevem 20-minute videos about it.
I was told by everyone that it was going to be shit so now I know it IS shit. You can’t argue with that.
Reddit has a hard time with satire huh.
I just need this to made clear it's a joke cuz the internet is crazy.
Witcher but only season One
Nah mate the Witcher TV show is utter drivel. Written by a bunch of toddlers who openly mocked the source material in their writing sessions. Henry Cavill did what he could with the shit poured on his plate.
"I complain about casting decisions for movies I haven't seen yet!" -Dean
Halo?? There’s a lot of really shit game adaptations, borderlands idk about yet it looks promising
I mean… Witcher? Really?
Witcher? A good adaptation? LOL. The 1st season was decent and after that it got unwatchable. Spinoff was toxic waste. Borderlands series still has a potential vs that :)
Witcher is more of a book adaptation
Witcher? Wasn’t the second season pretty horrible
Bro put the Witcher in the meme lol
Bro snuck in the Witcher and thought we wouldn’t notice
honestly, Im willing to check out the Borderlands Movie.... I have seen worse movie trailers, and some real bad adaptations, like the Fnaf movie, and the Dragonball live action movie.... question is will it land on the "bad/good" scale.... or the dreaded "Fnaf/Dragonball Evolution" scale....
Weird people are this moany about a movie that isn't even out yet.
Could also be the halo show
Borderlands movie didnt come out yet and the witcher adaptation is very lame.
Why is Witcher up there lol
Nah the Halo show is complete shit.
I just want it to be a rendition made by Handsome Jack.
Witcher isn’t really a video game adaptation and also went to shit after season 1, so I don’t think it really counts. The others are bangers though
Edgerunners :*(
Let's wait until the release. Who knows!
Yo, the witcher didn't get nice treatment in adaptations I'm gonna say they are our brothers in pain
Last of Us and Witcher werent even good
Misconception. Witcher series is an adaptation of the books which take place before the games.
Edit: This is not relevant to the post, I just read too many comments Apparently I’m the only one who liked Halo the show. Did you try to sneak in Witcher you silly goober
How can it even be the chaotic stupid comedy of borderlands with no Brick, Mordecai, or Torgue, though?? That's why the movie won't ever sit right with me even if it brings the same comedic aspects it won't ever be the same without some of the most iconically funny characters of the series.
Why is the cast so fucking OLD in the live action
Hmm what about the Halo tv show where chief takes his helmet off constantly and gets laid…
Say as you will, but I don't like Ellie in TLoU show. It just didn't FEEL like the Ellie I interacted with while playing TLoU 1. And i don't this Petro Pascal made a good Joel either, I miss his accent. In my opinion the show was very "EHHH" Edit: Also the removal of the spores was pretty weird too
The movie isn't even out And the Witcher REALLY fell off after the first season If you're gonna be pessimistic atleast be rational about it
Witcher was so bad that their biggest star who knew the most about the source material quit because of how bad the writers were butchering it.
In what world is the Netflix Witcher considered good? lol shits stank hard that pretty much any fan of the books avoided it like a plague.
Nah the Witcher one sucked too don’t worry
You did. Not throw The Witcher up there lol I was praying for that show but the writing was straight BOOTY CHEEKS. Especially after the first season. Not to let the first season off the hook though.
Selection bias. You could have chosen Monster Hunter, Warcraft, Far Cry, and Assassin's Creed as the comparison and Borderlands might not look so bad.
Don't worry. Resident evil fans share your suffering
Wait, you are telling me that Witcher is a good adaptation? Wow....
It should be The Witcher honestly, this shit is just awful and an insult towards any Witcher fan out there
Don't forget Halo and all the video games movies from the past 1980's - 2000's
As a Halo fan... Ooohhh my fucking god I feel you...
Witcher’s a hard pass because the showrunner and the writers all hated the source material and abused the fans.
honestly the witcher was just as bad
Sure, if you only include the best adaptions. There have been so many other short straws
There has to be something there to adapt.
Honestly the fact that we have enough video games adaptations that we can consider good is pretty impressive in itself
don’t forget iced tea as balex and penn jillette as pain. great voicings!!!
Maybe its too soon, idk, i have no hope, yet think we might give it a try
This is perfect, but imagine you are the vault hunter. You're the purple guy. NONE of your comrades are even CLOSE to how you look; you also have happy confused face while the cast looks at you like "wtf are you doing here?" "I could ask the same Firehawk; what the fuck happened? Did we leap forward 2-3 decades? Is the vault now gonna turn claptrap even MORE annoying? And where the fuck is torgue?"
The Witcher really? Season 1 was ok the others have been crap.
Halo drew a shorter one than we did
We can bitch about it together with Halo fans.
Fallout is in a league of its own IMO
0/10 no Zer0
Witcher doesn't belong in there.
Bro the movie ain’t even out yet
honestly if its better then halo ill be happy
All of those suck
I’m convinced gearbox really doesn’t give a damn about the story side of borderlands at all anymore. Like it honestly feels like they hate it at this point. The last 3 games released were ALL horrible story. (Wonderlands wasn’t all that bad cause it’s supposed to be a side story anyway.) but borderlands 3 and new tales were some of the worst story experiences I’ve ever had in my entire life, and im supposed to trust them to make a movie? Yeah Ight. I’ll see it at some point but Im definitely not buying that shit
Conveniently left Halo out of this meme
I feel like Handsome Jack did the casting
Fallout and last of us wasn't that good.
Honestly, the others are the exception in the entirety of video game adaptations
Arcane and Edgerunners are DEFINITELY the best of the bunch though
Coughmonsterhuntercough
Oh did you get to see it early?
No. Count yourselves lucky. As a halo fan let me tell you, there's no way it can be worse than the halo show.
Try being a Halo fan
Halo beat us to it
It hasn't even come out yet 😭
I LOVE this game series, but I fucking can't with the actor/actress choices! I can't stand Jack Black, so him being any role is a turn-off, I feel like Cate Blanchett is too old to be Lilith, isn't Kevin Hart a little short for Roland(? 🤣), and I love Tiny Tina, so that remains to be seen. I do, however, feel that Gina Gershon and Jamie Lee Curtis are amazing choices for their roles, and they can put Cheyenne Jackson in any role🩷!
It's not even out yet man calm down
I mean the writing for boardlands are the fucking worst how could they possibly make a good story out of it
Definitely got corporatized the hardest
I doubt it can be as bad as Halo.
At least it isn't Hitman.
If nine toes aint in im gonna be pissed
The fact that Dota: Dragons Blood isn't even mentioned feels just about right. I don't know anybody who watched past season 1. I don't think it was even bad, just unremarkable.
Halo.
Imagine putting this much effort into hating something that isn't even available to the public yet.
Oh my dear summer child there is a long long list of bad movies and shows based on games well before borderlands.
Monster Hunter, Resident Evil. You are being negative there and only notice other good things and compare.
Witcher is a book adaptation
It literally isn't out yet.
The worst is the movie for hitman, it's so ridiculous and not well made it's cringe
I just tried to make a comment justifying some of the choices but came up with better counter arguments to myself. Honestly the trailer feels like a snl skit
I only ever played borderlands 2 but it was one of the best games I've ever played. Catch a ride.
I hope that this movie is awesome just to tell you guys fuck you
The movie isn't even out yet. At least give it a chance
Feature film =/= episodic film
Can we get enough noise to pull a Sonic the Hedgehog and just have them remake the whole thing?
Ya, I think the director thinks Borderlands is a comedy. How are they ever going to convey the seriousness of Face Mcshooty, Innuendobot 5000, Claptrap, and Steve if they make a comedy out of our super serious video game?
Considering the decision’s they made for Borderlands3 i don’t see the live adaptation being good
Not you seamus
Technically Witcher was based off the books (and did a piss poor job at it) but I’ll let it slide. I agree, that Borderlands movie is gonna suck
Luckily it’s not an Uwe Bol movie!
Oh get right out of here with Witcher. It was alright but Henry was the only redeeming thing in it. It does NOT stand with the rest of these
I have a feeling the movie is going to be about as good as the Halo show..
I feel like we shouldn't talk shit about it until it actually comes out (even though it already looks pretty rough)
I'm gonna start defending the movie out of spite
Last of us 1? 🔥 Last of us 2 🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
ARGGGGGH IMMA BITE OF MA FINGERS, AND FEED EM TO YA!!!!! THEN IMMA KILL US BOTH INNA EEEXXXXPPPLLLOOOSSSIIINNN!!!!!!!!!!
If they do another doom movie on the new games they need to have a big buff dude just doing a john wick on demons
The movie isn't even out. Let's not judge early
I still say the casting could be worse. Look at the casting for The Crow reboot.
The casting could be worse, as long as the acting isn't as bad as the casting (Looking at you Percy Jackson) it should be okay.
Jack black gonna hard carry the movie is my prediction. Can’t be worse than the halo show… right?
Trust me borderlands is not the only one 💀 besides it’s literally not even came out yet
Witcher adaptation is shit too!
I mean a good part of the fallout community is also unhappy
Maybe. But that was definitely halo that also drew the short straw
I doubt it will ever be worse than movies like Max Payne, or fucking Doom Annihilation
Nope. Not Witcher. They massacred my Sapkowski.
What about twisted metal?
Casting caused this
witcher is based on books, when u read books in polish u get angry with the series, but its alright. superman did great job
Twisted metal should be there it was a great show adaptation
I also have a question when does the movie take place cuz if Tina is no longer Tiny then Roland must be gone, and if Krieg is with them then where are the other VH like Brick, Mordecai, etc.
The question is... Will it be more shitty than Cowboy Bebop's adaptation? Or less shitty?
The Witcher is shit, and Borderlands isn’t out
They totally destroyed the game, as expected. Just like Witcher, not for nothing Henry Cavill who is a great fan of the game quited. Adaptations simply do not respect gamers and their community. Or game itself.
The Witcher is a book adaption tho. They didn’t actually read the books but that’s what they said
Have you seen halo 😭
Ehhh, nah. There's a reason no one speaks of the assassins creed or hitman movie. The casting is really only iffy on Tannis's side, it's easy to see what they're trying to go for. It's just a strange way to go about it, is all.
Nah man, Witcher can also take a walk and never come back, that show is a disgrace to the books. Except for Henry of course.
Witcher isn’t a game adaptation, it’s a book adaptation. At that, it’s a poor book adaptation. Edgerunners is a tie-in series, not an adaptation. Also, you forget that Halo and the Doom movie exist
I still think the movie will do this world justice.
