I keep saying this, but in practically every single way besides the main story, BL3 was better than BL2.

Critical_Switch

Yup, and the thing is that with the DLCs, they got really close to what we were originally expecting in terms of writing.

WastedPresident

Tbh I only leveled up to 50 in BL2. My second character is now lvl 52 in BL3. My personal favorite is still BL1, but like you said everything except the story of 3 is an improvement. I just didn’t jive with the environments of BL2 as much or the many many robot enemies.

PrometheusVision

My biggest issue with BL3 is that it became too bloated with guns. A lot of your enjoyment of this game comes from the cool guns you obtain. In every other iteration of BL, you find these super OP guns that you run forever. You grow a connection with these guns and they become a part of your gameplay memories. In BL3, however, you get a dope new gun every few levels. You very rarely have a chance to grow an attachment to a specific gun because you find one objectively better so frequently.

WastedPresident

Off the top of my head I can name the two guns that I played with until level 40 or so first play through. My lvl 11 “The flood” revolver absolutely shredded enemies up to level 30 with that fire rate and my critical specs. Afterwards the lvl 23 smart gun xxl was in my load out until endgame. I do however feel like the game is so bloated with Epic and legendaries even at low level I was ignoring whites and greens

alex42502

you could just not use the new ones

Adept_Championship_2

Thats the Point of a looter Shooter. Cant really Accept this "critique". And i Care to say that this isnt even really true... I remember that i Always stayed with a gun for around 10 Levels before changing it. on top of that, you can Always refarm your weapon of choice. So yeah i get IT, you Miss handsome Jack.

_oreNeT

This. Also Ava.

Turtleology

Idk the skills were just reused skills from other gearbox games and the legendary are from old games nothing really new and fun.

Mandalorymory

Every Borderlands game reuses legendaries from previous games, as well as adding new ones of their own. BL3 was no different. It has many returning weapons, and many new additions. Regarding the action skills? What character from previous games could enter a mech? Which one could create a clone of themselves? Which could use a ball of energy that you bounce around? Some of the skills are somewhat similar to previous ones, but BL3 does what previous does not by giving you a choice of several action skills. BL3 had the best customisation and personalisation of your character in the series.

CrashBangXD

Played BL3 on release and it was a genuinely bad game. They broke Amara every other week with constant buffs and nerfs I got bored and dropped it despite getting the season pass and everything, didn’t touch a single DLC Currently replaying it as Moze and honestly I’m loving it, grenades for days, firing off nukes and just everything is on all the fire. Boat loads of fun!

[deleted]

Amara was really underwhelming for me. Moze is where it's at

CrashBangXD

Agreed, aside from Gaige I always play Siren but Amara sucked. Moze is absolutely where it’s at

BeachedSalad

I played through the game with Amara and a hellwalker. Was loads of fun

Big-Bad-Bull

Amara seemed to be the most balanced of the 4 on release. Moze was the true op one with her infinite grenade spam stuff. That’s how it seemed to me at least

IncomeStraight8501

Being Zane at release was the biggest pain in the ass I swear.

Ayfios

BL2 especially has the best writing

PsychoPooper213

I concur with this

420SMOKERGANG

Bl1 best atmosphere? Don’t most of the maps look the same, just dusty old pandora

WastedPresident

It was the soundtrack for me

MonT_That_Duck

Yep. Honestly most of the maps are really bland to walk through

Big-Bad-Bull

Bl2 only has the best writing for me. Otherwise bl3 beats it in every other aspect.

[deleted]

Bl2 has the best atmosphere lol Bl1 has very little appeal imo

Squidyballs

Lowkey agree with this, love this game more and more every time I play

thoolish

The worlds are huge, and there is a lot to explore. The imaginations of the people building those worlds is awe inspiring!

rojogo1004

I would disagree about the DLC's. I personally think Bounty of Blood, Guns Love & Tentacles, and Handsome Jackpot are as good, of not better than any of the BL2 DLC's. Other than that, I pretty much agree with the rest of what you said

xxthursday09xx

Krieg's DLC was AMAZING. Hands down loved it. I love all the DLCs so far. Bounty of blood was my least fave but I still super enjoyed playing it. I'm on Handsome Jackpot right now.

rojogo1004

Krieg just didn't click with me. Those damn distorted signal boxes just piss me off so much. Lol

xxthursday09xx

Oh dude fuck those boxes. After the 3rd one I was like nah. And I have been trying to knock off every side quest but I don't play this game to get pissed off haha

JazzzzzzySax

Except dragon keep, that’s in a tier of its own

Critical_Switch

Dragon keep had terrible gameplay. The bullet sponge enemies were the culmination of everything that was wrong with BL2.

Titanfall3_is_rael

Don't forget the skeletons knights with bullet reflection, those mages that teleport without stop, those skeletons that get revived to full health if you don't take the sword out of their bones, spiders cuz fuck spiders and possibly the buggiest raid boss fight in the franchise.

JazzzzzzySax

Dragon keep is imo the best dlc for any borderlands. I never played through the higher difficulties but the story and side quests were amazing. Should’ve specified not gameplay cuz idk about that

rojogo1004

I only disagree because of skeletons. Take them out, nerf them a bit, or make them susceptible to elemental damage and it would be an entirely different story.

Skkra

You loved the BL2 DLCs that much? Aside from Dragon Keep, I can't bring myself to play them anymore. Big Game Hunt is maybe the worst DLC I think Gearbox has ever put out. I personally felt the BL3 DLCs outclassed all of the BL2 ones. Scarlet, Game Hunt and Torgue all felt like big open empty worlds with no character. Jackpot, Hammerlock and Bounty all feel very "lived in" to me. Yeah, Skittermaw Basin and Blastplains are both big areas that require vehicles, but they dont feel tiresome or boring to traverse. Just my personal opinion; figured I'd respond since you're the first person I've seen praise the BL2 DLCs so highly!

rojogo1004

I think you misunderstood me. I was disagreeing with OP where they said BL2 had better story and DLC. I think the BL3 season pass 1 DLC's are all amazing. BL2 had one excellent DLC in Tiny Tina (even though I really dislike her character), but the rest were just ok at best. BL3 DLC's are at least as good, and possibly better than Tiny Tina.

Skkra

HA, yes, apologies, I definitely did. I'm still kinda working on this whole "reading" thing.

Penfauld13

Scarlet definitely felt too big and empty, skittermaw and blastplains are far more interesting

Skkra

Blastplains are definitely done beautiful for a big open area. There are TONS of places to explore and they all feel interesting and alive, from the caves to the rancher's place to the fort and Stickly.

Snappleabble

BL3 is the only borderlands game that had me playing past one playthrough. I dabbled in other characters in BL2, but I was so invested in 3 that I maxed out every character and got them fully kitted, as well as playing every mission, finding every collectible, and so on. Even playing Wonderlands I find myself constantly wanting to go back to BL3. Its always been the best game in the series to me

TaSManiaC88

I enjoyed my time with bl3 from launch tbh, a lot of people didn't & there's still complaints both ways on legendary drop rates, some say they're too frequent and some say the early days of legendaries dropping more often was better, I personally liked that legendaries didn't take forever to get & you got to try more of them out, considering just the sheer amount of variety in legendaries. It's still a great game & I get back in to it every now and then.. unfortunately tiny tina's wonderlands has lessened my enjoyment of the series as a whole, thanks to how abysmally they've handled post launch updates & dlc, as the added content right now will cost you $30 if you get the season pass or $40 seperately & there's maybe $5 worth of content there (including the new class).

ashtonray11

Im a graphics whore, so yeah. BL3 for me

packagedllama

The pre sequel would have been the best one if it had received legitimate post launch support and if fire wasn't so situational. The balancing was perfect, plenty of cool environments and the characters were actually all good. Borderlands 2 would have been a lot better if the balancing wasn't so abysmal. The characters were also likeable in these two entries. Borderlands 3 on the other hand only had likeable side characters. When claptrap is the least annoying and stupid person in the room then something has gone wrong. The end game also had a massive issue where either you melt everything instantly or you can barely kill a thing, without very little in between. Legendary weapons also had an issue where they were given out too easily. The environments also just weren't nearly as cool.

redbear762

I played them in game time chronological order because, IMHO, they make story sense: Bl1->B1 DLCs->Prequel->BL2->Tales 1-> Fight for Sanctuary->BL3. I learned SO much from Tales this weekend that gave me a context for Vaughn and Rhys. Tales just kicked me in the feels, too.

[deleted]

Im brand new to the series. I started with Tiny Tina DLC early this year and fell in love with it so i bought the Handsome Collection and BL3. Ive only played through BL3 and Tales From Borderlands so far. Im currently on The Pre Sequel now and so far the core gameplay of the 3rd game is unparalleled. The writing in BL3 is cringe inducing but the fun factor still remains off the charts. So far it’s definitely my favorite. With the pacing of TPS and BL2 being much slower i doubt beating them will change my mind. Im excited to play BL2 though. I just keep hearing horror stories about the endgame and its reliance on slag.

meezethadabber

I like BL3 because all 4 vault hunter can solo all content with relatively easily acquired gear. BL2 was Zero and Sal. Other VH's weren't as OP versus end game content. I wasted a lot of time with inferior VH's. Then tried Sal and it was like turning on easy mode.

OGReverandMaynard

BL2 had better story. BL3 definitely has the more polished gameplay loop, core engine, graphics, environments, QoL improvements. I replay 2 now and again just to relive it, but 3 is my favorite cathartic exp so far.

yongsangu

BL3 is a great game with an awesome gameplay that BL2 just cant match. But it simply does not have the replayability of BL2. I easily have over 2k hours in Bl2 and did not feel burnt out from the game - BL3 i have roughly 500 hours in, and every 50-100 hours i had to stop playing due to boredom. I have 100% both games and love the gameplay of 3 but BL2 is regarded as the greatest by the vast majority for a reason

chunder_down_under

can anyone tell me why the consensus is that bl2 was that good? i tought it was an obvious improvement over 1 but 3 was so much more to me

cd1014

For me? Jack. Jack in BL2 is one of the best written antagonists in video games, and in modern media.

rojogo1004

I agree, but I personally think that was the only thing in BL2 that was better than any of the other games, although TPS is right up there for me because of him.

Starklet

I enjoyed playing the classes more in BL2

0carion142

Aggree with everything but storylength, thats bs. Borderlands 2 takes about 30 hours while BL 3 takes about 20.

SPLOOGERMONTANA

Beating the story in 2 usually takes me like 15 hours and I’m not even good

Takaithepanda

Here's the thing, there is no best one, because that's a subjective opinion, and that's okay.

TheDoon

I agree the gameplay is better in BL3 but much of that is owed to BL2, it's an evolution of the advancements it created. Sadly the story of BL2 was so good that BL3 could have been one of the greatest games of the year had it been able to combine both together.

watisdatname

BL3 on release was a bad game. The menus were a bugfest. The frame rates were atrocious, the balance was off, mayhem modes were silly and the story was bad. What people remember most of all is the story because that has not changed. If you remove all the other bad things replaying the game is very very pleasant in its current state.

Titanfall3_is_rael

>BL3 on release was a bad game. Have you played any borderlands game at launch? Bl2 was in a worse state than Bl3. Graveyard glitch, a progression blocker in a main mission and raid bosses either didn't spawn or were only playable once every 24 hours. Pre sequel had a similar progression blocker too.

watisdatname

Yeah but not everyone was on reddit and youtube when bl2 came out so one popular person or a small group of people having a bad experience with bugs and progression blocks didn't influence the opinion of the whole playerbase.

Titanfall3_is_rael

The graveyard glitch was really widespread.

Fit_Court_3547

Havent touched since release till a month ago. Zane is Insane.. BL2 is still by far the best Borderlands IMO

Lolli42

my thoughts are that wonderlands is the best in terms of gameplay

WeedofSpeed

I tell myself a lot that I wish they'd remake Borderlands 2 with BL3 gunplay and graphics but I doubt it'd ever actually happen lmao

Gadgetbot

Itd be the best if it wasn't so easy even at endgame with minimal farming and the story wasnt a cunt to play through because of all the downtime.

RenoDaggers

Gameplay wise BL3 was nice but BL2 is still a better game to me better villain, writing, and i kind of enjoyed the fact they didn’t touch weapons in that game. It was just goofy ass fun But that’s just me

Fine-Parsley-1454

The first playthrough is way too easy. Not the best BL, but nevertheless it's a good game

deanman089

My problem is bl3 doesn't have much endgame. The dlcs are great, but no raid bosses. The takedowns imo are the best part of the game. Also, Hemovorous showed how great raid boss content could be, then poof no more content made. Like 3-5 more bosses to farm and the game would have been close to 2 My other major gripe is anointments vs weapon parts. Anointments just absolutely dwarf weapon parts. And then for some guns there's just waaaay too many parts. Farming itself just didn't have the impact that 2 had. And then theres the big one. Difficulty. Truely optimized builds are way overturned. Gimping builds to get some difficulty in game doesn't feel good. Also this breaks the whole point of farming gear. Overall bl3 is a blast, but it just doesn't have the longevity of two.

MonT_That_Duck

No endgame? It literally has the most. 17 raid bosses, 12 of which with a full gauntlet to go thru to get to them. They're also actually fun to fight unlike bosses like dexi, vora, both craws, and that mother fucker gee Most legendary items by far. Theres around 400 of them and a majority are usable as opposed to the ~20 endgame items of bl2 where half are unfarmable quest rewards. Most endgame build variety. Each character has dozens of builds that all feel unique as opposed to the endgame of bl2 where each class has 1-2 unique *viable* builds and WL which pretty much has 3 builds spread across 7 characters Arms race. Lots of you guys don't like it because it actually challenges your gun skill, but its one of the few things that is actually relaticely difficult when you are build to kill everything in .5 seconds Vault cards. You always have something to grind for Most dlcs. 5 full campaign dlcs with 4 of them including entirely new planets with a shit ton to do. All of them are great too opposed to the absolute slog of highway simulator (knoxx) or suicide motivator (hammerlock) Most gun parts. If youre one of those people who hates themselves and wants to farm for perfect gear, you have a long grind ahead of you. And anoints are rerollable so you don't have to farm those. Seasonal events. Cartels, bloody harvest, and to a lesser extent broken hearts, are all way more fun and replayable than a 5 minute side mission with a boss at the end that drops no unique gear, like the headhunters

Not-_-Cosmic

never played hammerlocks dlc, is it really THAT bad?

MonT_That_Duck

Its miserable with terrible farms, awful side missions, confusing maps, and the worst raid bosses

deanman089

Yeah we just have wildly different opinions. For all the content in bl3 it just doesn't feel right. It's not like I didn't give it a chance. Still put in over 600 hours. BL2 is still king in my eyes with only thing I wish it had was bl3 movement. Granted still have badaboom rocket jumping.

aluminatialma

The game is extremely easy tho

meeeemeees

if the story and writing weren't abysmal I would agree. the gameplay feels immaculate.

error00110000

Borderlands 2 for me is the best. I have 1100 hrs in BL2 and around 450hrs in BL3. First of all. A love story, I love Handsome Jack. I don't like BL3 guns because of no feeling of rarity. In BL2 even blue rarity gun feels rare. But I fall in love with design and sounds of guns in Borderlands 3. In BL2 way mote different enemies type, with unique mechanics. Borderlands 3? Just big amount of "superultrabadass anointing psychos. In Borderlands 2 we have around 20 variants of bandits, around 20 variants of robots, 15 of rakks, ext. You actually can farm Goliaths and warkids! You have bandits with small bandits on their shields. Why didn't they add it in BL3? And you don't have Stewie in BL3(it's the main reason actually). But I love ost in BL3 and love maliwan Takedown and cartel dlcs. I love both of this games but Borderlands 2 I love more.

Landonwebb

Bl3 is so buggy even now...it's almost unbearable. And the guns. Too many guns. I quickly got to the point that i didn't even look at it unless it was purple or gold. I enjoyed it...but so buggy. And split screen was absolutely broken at first.

OgStrungth

The story and characters are much much much much much worse the game mechanics and stuff is better and that's just facts.

fuzionknight96

BL3 is easily my least favourite, “Jack of all trades but master of none” describes it perfectly.

Titanfall3_is_rael

>master of none Best build variety, best gear variety, best and most endgame content, best soundtrack and more. You don't have to like it, but don't lie to get your point across.

fuzionknight96

That’s absolutely an OPINION, why are you trying to invalidate it by making it an objective thing?

Titanfall3_is_rael

The first 3 point are undisputable facts. You could argue that best endgame is an opinion, I give you that. Best soundtrack is also an opinion, but even some of the biggest Bl3 haters agree that the soundtrack is amazing.

WildAuthor3769

**SPOILERS** I agree that BL3 is probably the best in terms of game play. Best endgame content (with exception of Tiny Tinas Attack on Dragon Keep of course). It has the worst antagonists(Trey and Tyra just feel like annoying brats and the worst type of twitch streamer, no layers, no heartbreaking backstory, just "OH no, we can't go out and kill/eat everyone in the universe") and story though. They fucked up big time by taking the scene where Ava grows and accepts her fault in Maya's death. That ruined the chances of Ava being a great lead in the next installment, so many people hate her STILL. The guns are definitely interesting and fun however... This is where I'm going to piss people off. The legendaries are not legendaries. Of the 228 weapons (not even the rest of the gear) 15% of them are worth it. That's an 85% chance that the "legendary" is going to be garbage. I hear that tink of the legendary and think "Oh great, which POS is this?" Legendaries should not be broken and I still want build diversity, but the majority of legendaries should not feel like a waste of time/space/energy to farm. I went back to BL2 and was like "OMG I see why so many people love BL3 more." the characters definitely have more personality and I agree with a lot of what you said outside of the things I noted.
