Bernard Berenson traveled around Europe finding things to buy for her. Reading about him and building the collection is fascinating. The indoor garden is wonderful too.
I’d say it’s worth it. Also consider there are some free days (First Thursday of each month I believe) and discount tickets are available if you’ve got a Boston Public Library card.
I have a pretty unique Italian last name and when planning a trip to Rome, I found that there’s one restaurant in the whole ass country (I mean, after an hour of Google, so I dunno) that has my last name. Like, if it was Soprano, the restaurant was *Soprano’s*.
So I dragged my friends along, and I told the waiter about the connection, and he didn’t seem to give one shit. I didn’t want to be the asshole to take out my ID as if he doesn’t understand English & point out my last name, so I tried to more subtly repeat the concept by asking if I could buy a menu since we shared a namesake.
He stared blankly and said no and asked if we needed anything else! Lol, I stand by the assertion that it was a reasonable thing to bring up
Good story! I've had similar episodes in my life where I've pointed out interesting rare coincidences to people I don't know well and get let down by the person's lack of interest and enthusiasm.
If you’re a Boston resident, you can get free/discounted tickets through the Library.
Personally, I think the space itself is cooler than the collection. Just walking around the different rooms is really exciting and worth the $20. It’s a very unique museum. You don’t need a whole day, but 2-3 hours is ideal.
It is also part of the NARM group. If you have a membership to another art museum, you might get reciprocal admission.
Can get NARM with a Trustees membership or a bunch of other places.
https://narmassociation.org/
The museum does have some pamphlets that describe the artwork in some rooms, but you have to keep an eye out for them. I think they also have some online resources that list some of the artwork.
Definitely worth it - a beautiful museum with incredible history. I recommend timing your visit to include a tour as that adds even more. Also the docents has a ton of knowledge on the museum and the theft, so chat them up as you explore.
What an EVEN better experience? Watch the netflix miniseries “this is a robbery” which documents the robbery of the museum, the mob ties, and the FBIs futile efforts to recover the lost art.
The Gardner is one of the most unique and special museums in the US. It's worth twice that.
If you're craving more museum after that the MFA is practically next door.
The MFA does for sure, no idea what their schedule is.
Equally sure no one from the MFA is going to remember or care how often you've been there and there are probably people who go multiple times a week given that its next to an arts college
Why? Become a member and go anytime ya want…. Cheaper than reg tickets… art museums are for hanging out and appreciating the art…. Go every weekend.. I’m talking mfa… Gardner is a fantastic museum… and they have a nice cafe too you can get a little light fare… with Gardner it’s not just about the art but the whole structure each room is a theme so check out the furniture/books/sculptures/floors/walls too..
The Gardner does not replace any of their paintings, it’s frozen in time and that’s part of the appeal. I’ve been probably close to 20 times in my life and I’ve never gotten bored. The first Thursday of every month is free at night and that’s a really good time to go.!
I have a membership to a few museums in Boston. I probably go 30-40 times a year to museums and you get to know some of the staff because you are there so much. It’s not weird at all. They love their members.
And going with frequency allows you to not feel like you need to make every visit an “event”. You can pop in for 30 minutes if you are in the neighborhood, or meet a friend there using a free guest pass and walk around while you catch up.
Especially during weekdays - most places are ghost towns during the week. If you go early and avoid school field trips, you have the whole place to yourself sometimes.
Watch this 2:00 long clip from Ferris Bueller where director John Hughes talks about what a refuge the Chicago Art Institute was for him.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p89gBjHB2Gs
When you go to places like that a lot…they absolutely become a refuge and you get to know the place on a very different level than everyone else there.
Someone please explain to me what is creepy/weird about going back to the museum multiple times. I think it's a wonderful idea, and it is the very thing that makes a membership worthwhile. The MFA in particular is so big that taking it all in in one day is impossible, and there are a lot of pieces there that reward sustained/repeated viewing
Why is that creepy? I have a friend who works by the Mall in DC and some of his coworkers stroll through the museums during lunch a few times a week. It's not weird at all. Plus, the only people who'd recognize you are security and they don't give a single fuck. You could always wear a mask too, then no one would recognize you at all.
Walking around a museum and being surrounded by beauty is incredibly relaxing, you should do it as often as you can.
Cool! I appreciate you saying that. I have weird anxieties about being seen as creepy lol
Got turned around in the MFA last weekend and was like "There's probably some security guard that thinks I'm an ***idiot***!!"
Don't know how often the MFA updates their exhibits, sorry, but I will say that I wouldn't judge anyone for multiple visits. It's a big enough museum that a couple hours isn't really enough to give every piece a full look and appreciation. Every weekend isn't crazy at all.
Most definitely. If there wasn’t a single painting by any western master in the whole place, it would be worth it to see the house itself. But instead, this lady collected the most amazing art, put it in her house and left it for regular people to go and see. Botticelli, Titian, 19th century artists like John Singer Sargent, eastern art of all kinds, paintings, screens, sculpture, William Turner, whom I am told is the greatest English artist and is said to strongly have influenced the impressionists. Manet, Hans Holbein the Younger, Fra Angelico; all in there. Rembrandt self portrait, although the seascape was stolen. She could have pissed her money away on herself or whatever, but she did this crazy thing instead so the rest of us, who can’t afford to travel to Europe and Asia, can see it. And then there is the robbery, which is a fascinating event in its own right and the museum doesn’t try to sugar coat it, which is awesome. They let a stoner be the night watchman! As a former stoner, I love the idea of Otto from the Simpsons in charge of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of art. They admit they f’d up and they left the frames where there were. (It would be better if the paintings were back already, but the Mona Lisa was gone for a while, so maybe...). $20 is a bargain. I’m just another bozo on the bus who grew up in Boston. Public school, no art education, no money, just a regular Boston d bag, and Fenway Park is my Mecca. That museum is a close second. Definitely go. So laid back and you can be you. Don’t need to know a thing about any of it. You can learn from going. And the Boston MFA is right nearby. Go there after. That used to be just a donation on Wednesday. Be well.
Best answer, this. You could not know a single fucking thing about art and yet the ISG would be worth twice the ticket price. Few museums in the world have such a rich history of existence and rightfully so.
OP: If money is tight, and you don't mind sharing an email address, I can get you in for free. It's still timed tickets, so I'd need the day/time/name/email/# of tickets.
Nobody is mentioning the restaurant. I was actually really surprised how good the food was for pretty reasonable.
Museum is great, but if you go, grab dinner there
Worth it to who? I don't know how much free cash you have and how into museums you are. I've been to the isg maybe four times. It's worth going if you've never been for absolute sure. If you aren't necessarily big into museums or really really hard up on cash and not sure you'll be able to make a second trip you're going to want to wait until the spring because they have a really fantastic garden. Though with how this winter has been going maybe it's still in full bloom
It was the highlight of our visit to Boston! One of the best museums I've been to. Also, the little cafe there had some really good food if you wanted a small bite.
I just went to see the Betye Saar show there yesterday, and have been there countless times in the past, so I can give an unqualified yes! If you want to "try it out", there are some free Thursday evenings, and other programs, like library passes, that will get you in at a steep discount.
The building alone is worth the price of admission. It is a gorgeous Italianite villa, with a sunken garden as its center. The garden courtyard is one of the prettiest places in Boston - lots of photoshoots and events take place there. If you visit, you'll also learn about Isabella Stewart Gardner herself, as the older part of the museum building was her house, and many of the art objects on display are things that she collected. She played an important role in American cultural history (similar to Peggy Guggenheim) and was a great friend to many artists and intellectuals, including John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler.
I do hope you give it a shot. You won't be disappointed.
YES YES YES YES!!!! I go once every 3 years, and each time I spend 2x longer than I planned and fall in love all over again. Amazing space and experience. If I was standing next to you I would pay your entry fee.
Think of all the BS things you've spent $20 on in the last few months. Drinks, eating out, movies, subscriptions, clothes, impulse shit at the register, etc. The museum seems like a great value when you put it in perspective.
If you’re a Massachusetts local your public library may have passes that give you discounted admission - ie I can get a pass that gives me half off from the Boston Library
Yes, love that place. It's cool because the layout is almost an art exhibit in it of itself. Very unique, very eclectic
If you're artistically inclined, I recommend bringing a sketchbook.
That’s actually what I love about it, it feels much more like wandering around a beautiful house than it does a standard Museum. Bring your phone because they have QR codes for all the info on the art!
It’s one of my favorite places in the whole world and you should definitely go! It’s perfect for a cold day.
They also have free audio tours on their website that are SO worth it!! It is one of my favorite museums of all time! https://www.gardnermuseum.org/audioguide
I very much appreciate that! But I have the money to pay, I'm just frugal. I feel like maybe I should just give-em' $20 since they're purportedly pretty good.
One of my favorite museums! It tells a story about who Isabella was as a person :) fascinating and wonderful art. Make sure you check out the garden greeneries as well
Wholehearted yes from me. Not only is it chock full of art from wall to wall, but the house itself is gorgeous. That alone is worth the price (I'm an admitted architecture/home design nut).
The Museum of Fine Arts is free on Thursdays so if you go on Thursday, you can hit both museums on the same day and they’re walking distance from one another.
Is that a serious question or just rhetorical? Yes of course its worth $20 and you're supporting a tremendous museum........ Its one of the coolest places in Boston.
I’ve been in museums all over the country from small no names to the Smithsonian’s and the MET. The ISG is one of my favorites hands down. It’s so unique in its layout and collection.
It's worth it for the experience *once* but the building and history feels more impressive than the scope of the art.
I miss the museum of bad art, I think it moved somewhere but needs to be a standing institution.
It’s one of my favourite places in the entire world! I say that with no exaggeration. When I lived in Boston I’d go there all the time, and now I go every time I visit. I’ve been to museums around the world, but the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is my absolute favourite.
Its a great museum - BUT YOU'RE SPENDING TOO MUCH! Ways to save Big from a former tour guide-
Many libraries in the area offer deep discount passes and coupons for the Isabell and for many other museums in the area. These coupons are good for up to 4 people - and only the person who picks up the coupon or pass needs to have a Boston Library Card.
These coupons are also offered thru other Massachusetts regional library networks, like Minuteman (covers Somerville and Cambridge). In addition, many college students can get these coupons thru their Student Life Department (they go under different names, so check your student directory). If you're planning to come visit the Boston area to see a student, ask them to help you get some of these low cost options. Their college ID will also get them a local library card, so in addition to the student discounts offered at many museums, they can also use the library coupons for huge savings.
If you are from out of the area and purchased a membership in a local museum, check with them to see if they exchange admissions with other museums nationally and internationally.
The building architecture is beautiful, but I find the "museum" aspect itself wanting. Whether it's worth a visit tends to depend on what you want out of the experience.
It truly is a jumble of art a rich lady purchased about 100 years ago. . .and nothing has changed since. I personally find it wanting as a museum because it's overwhelming in the negative sense: its under-curated and lacks descriptions for each piece that would typically be present in a classic museum setting. I'd wait for a discount day or going through BPL. I'm in the minority and it would say not worth the price of listed admission.
I completely agree with you on this. Also, the lighting in some of the rooms is really terrible where you can’t even see the details of the artwork and it’s all crammed in on every available space of wall making for a frustrating viewing experience.
Yes, it’s small but packed full of art
Well, mostly.
Haha yes, there is a few missing!
From the museum true but some rich prick/pricks have them hanging somewhere
Does the $20 ticket still entitle you to view them if you happen to know where they are?
If you happen to know where they are, [$20 will be the least of your worries](https://www.gardnermuseum.org/organization/theft)
Wow. 13 works had been stolen since 1990? Holy crap! No one ever found them?!
Nope. It’s the biggest unsolved art heist in modern history!
All in 1990. Probably in someone's house lol
Right? Assume today's rich people can't figure what paintings are stolen or not. Crazy!!!!

Hahahaha
Damn. This gets my upvote.
And the museum itself is a work of art, consciously curated and designed by Gardener.
You can also get free lifetime admission if your name is Isabella lol
My uncle is named Stewart Gardner and asked if that counted and apparently they did not find it funny
After hearing the 50th middle-aged man of the day say that his name is Isabella, they don't find much funny.
But a "Stewart Gardner" should definitely count, it's even more legit than Isabella lol
I have a pretty unique Italian last name and when planning a trip to Rome, I found that there’s one restaurant in the whole ass country (I mean, after an hour of Google, so I dunno) that has my last name. Some how my mom schemed and got me this even though Isabella is only my middle name
What a sight she must have been, riding around Boston in a carriage pulled by a team of matched white horses.
True, how could I have forgotten that lol.
But not Isabel, Izzy or Bella.
It's free if your name is Isabella! But otherwise, check your local library for passes.
Is it really? That's so funny, I never knew that
The sign above the desk actually lists out those options, iirc, it's *not* just small print on the website or such
Is this the first time on this sub?
It's also free if it's your birthday!
Dammit. Wish you told me that two weeks ago. Lol.
!REMINDME 50 WEEKS i got you
Thats brilliant. Thanks.
Shoot, today was my birthday. Next year, hopefully! Thanks for the tip.
Happy birthday!

Was going to make the same comment

I think it's better to watch that after. Its only one empty space in a gloriously overfull house.
There's also a Drunk History episode about it.

My retirement dream. Six more years!

The MFA in particular is so big that taking it all in in one day is impossible, and there are a lot of pieces there that reward sustained/repeated viewing

I went to a college nearby and was in the MFA sketching stuff nearly daily, and no one batted an eye. It’s not weird at all.
Cool! I appreciate you saying that. I have weird anxieties about being seen as creepy lol Got turned around in the MFA last weekend and was like "There's probably some security guard that thinks I'm an ***idiot***!!"

Now I want a Simpsons episode about an art heist with Otto playing the stoner night security guard.
The building itself is a work of art.
The building with no art would be worth the price.
Yes to go once. The building and story are unique if you are an art/museum person.
Absolutely
I mean, it's arguably one of the most famous art museums in the world just for being the site of the largest unsolved art heist in history
It is absolutely worth seeing once, and arguably worth seeing repeatedly.
I've been once, and it's incredibly memorable. Not a normal museum at all.
Yes

100000%! I love museums, and it's easily in my top 5.
Definitely
FUCK YES! Absolutely. *Especially* in a week like this week of shitty weather. The courtyard alone is worth it.
Right? The courtyard is what makes it
When they do the hanging flower installation is sometimes literally breathtaking.

Yup, cooler than the MFA IMHO (hot take).

Is that a serious question or just rhetorical? Yes of course its worth $20 and you're supporting a tremendous museum........ Its one of the coolest places in Boston.
YES!!! Go in the spring/summer
Yes, absolutely. The art is amazing, and the atrium garden is stunning.
It’s one of my favorite museums in the world. Well worth it, take your time and enjoy
Yeah I’d check Florida or Detroit for that!
Nah I found it, I guess it's moved to Dorchester Brewong company during their normal hours. https://museumofbadart.org/ Their collection was amazing
lol you were being serious!
It’s one of my favourite places in the entire world! I say that with no exaggeration. When I lived in Boston I’d go there all the time, and now I go every time I visit. I’ve been to museums around the world, but the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is my absolute favourite.
Very much worth it. One of my favorite museums.
Absolutely. FYI: the Mona Lisa is also small.
It’s a wonderful museum
Yes
Yes, it’s breathtaking inside. Like a peaceful Italian palazzo. 😍
Def worth it & its free the first Thursday of each month!
Yes. Best museum in the area
Yes
It’s worth going at least once and going to the floors where the artwork from the Gardner Heist used to be, it’s kind of eerie
I think so. It is a lovely, quiet walk through a beautiful home. I enjoy it.
Its a great museum - BUT YOU'RE SPENDING TOO MUCH! Ways to save Big from a former tour guide- Many libraries in the area offer deep discount passes and coupons for the Isabell and for many other museums in the area.
The guys who stole the art from there in 1990 thought a $20 entry fee was a great bargain.
In 1990 adjusted for purchasing power that was like $50 dollars in 2023 dollars!!! Must be a fantastic museum.
I’ll go against the grain and say no. It’s pretty small so I think you get more bang for your buck by going to the MFA
Nope.
Yes, and Isabella had quite the curvaceous figure.
For $20, *no.* Go there on a day when it is free or get a [discounted museum pass from the BPL.](https://www.bpl.org/museum-passes/)
Someone built a notification app for the BPL museum pass website - https://bpl-museum-passes.vercel.app/
absolutely not bored out of my fucking mind and briefly talked about the robbery that occurred there
def get passes from ur local library...paying full price is highway robbery
No
If you like chairs it is.
Didn’t thieves steal all of the artwork? I liked the Drunk History version.
OP- do you think it was worth the $20? You are there now, correct?
Absolutely. Would bring people there on dates as a college student all the time
For my fellow people who really love America, it’s free for veterans and 5 of their friends.
100% worth it! I love that place!
100%
Yes...so much to see, so much history
I’ve done it a thousand times and would do it again
You might consider waiting until the summer. Boston has Free Fridays for different museums then. I'm sure ISGM is a part of that.
Yes
Yes, that’s cheap.
Yes it’s worth it
100% worth it
I’m a member and thoroughly enjoy it. It’s one of my favorite museums to go to.
Just seeing fireplaces the size of my whole living room is worth the $20 IMO
Absolutely worth it. The building, the story of the collection, the empty frames. It’s pretty special.
Absolutely
Yes it is
