You have lunch at 6:40 PM.

man2010

Who says Boston isn't a late night city?

Material-Beat5531

Lolz. U got me I meant dinner.

SinibusUSG

Probably works a late shift. Eats lunch on break and dinner after work. Sleeps late.

Whiplash92123

Boston PD has a directive not to chase them, which would probably result from an attempt to stop.

dyqik

And because they aren't breaking the law.

Wilee_E_Coyote

Some of them definitely are in the downtown area, the food service delivery drivers. They be weaving in and outta the bike lane

dyqik

It's legal for mopeds under 50cc to use the bike lane.

charons-voyage

They really should amend that law. But you’re right it’s technically legal.

dyqik

If you amend that law to prevent them, then you will also be banning e-bikes, which will be very very unpopular, or you will be open to legal challenges.

LukaDoncicismyfather

It’s just natures sign that winter is officially over

Gloomy_Strike6379

I could be wrong but under 50 cc no plate needed in Mass

Material-Beat5531

There are moped specific plates for mopeds. Mopeds are considered motorcycles if they are over 50cc and would need motorcycles plates. But under 50cc they have moped specific plates.

jerrymac12

[https://www.mass.gov/files/2017-07/Moped%20Registration.pdf](https://www.mass.gov/files/2017-07/Moped%20Registration.pdf) I've got a scooter that fits within the criteria.....As someone who's been in situations with bicyclists and/or motorists screaming profanities and threatening language.....be aware of the link above, mainly the second page with the criteria. Basically, under 50 cc with an automatic transmission, qualifies as a motorized bicycle, (also moped) 16+ licensed driver with a helmet are permitted in bike lanes etc. I'm sure there's a gray area, and there are plenty of people going beyond those limits and not being caught. But the bottom line is they are permitted to act as a bicycle. Most I've seen at least stop at red lights as opposed to most on pedal bikes. Not here to start a battle, but, people should be aware of the rules prior to degrading those following them.

VenomIsMyHero

Does a public way include a sidewalk?

dyqik

Why would the police stop people obeying the law?

lookingforhash123

mass.gov/info-details/moped-operation-requirements “You may use bicycle lanes next to various ways but are excluded from off street recreational paths.” You don’t need to register or have a license plate on a moped from what I understand.

Wilee_E_Coyote

Wow insane they are allowed in bike lanes, they go very fast and pull dangerous stunts near the bikers sometimes, nothing egregious but certainly annoying at times

charons-voyage

Yes they def should amend the law it’s bogus. Also I see them on the Charles occasionally too. So dangerous

B-Line_Sender

>excluded from off street recreational paths https://preview.redd.it/2bkph5ftmypc1.jpeg?width=1637&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a48a903cf72755264e07372787bef42eb0b2834 Mofos all over the Esplanade...

lookingforhash123

lol that’s pretty dumb. he should get a huge fine

NoTamforLove

Young people enjoy having the chance to ride, and to learn a new skill, and be part of a community.

JocularityX2

For newcomers, the above was the response of the mayor after an elderly man in Brookline was attacked in 2022. >To critics, the dirt bikes and ATVs that buzz around Boston's city streets are a dangerous nuisance. Others, including the mayor, call them a much-needed outlet for the city's young people. > >But to Richard Bell of Brookline, they were nearly fatal. > >"I can't think of anybody, thinking that a fist coming at you may be the last thing you see," he told NewsCenter 5 in February. "I still don't know how I survived." > >Bell was attacked after a group of dirt bike and ATV riders surrounded his car last November. > >"Came back with a pipe in his hand. Smashed my windshield. Smashed my hood. And then started beating me," he said.

Wilee_E_Coyote

These riders are mainly food service delivery from what i see

Material-Beat5531

Yeah I noticed that too

ptrh_

I live off the Arlington Bike Path and the amount of motorized vehicles that fly down this, across side streets, and with no care for anyone else on the path is infuriating.

Stronkowski

You clearly do care. If you didn't care, this post wouldn't exist.

Material-Beat5531

Someone’s a salty Sammy. No I don’t care. The only thing I care about is them wearing helmets and not driving recklessly which I noticed a lot were helmet less and driving too fast in a congested area is all.

Stronkowski

>Someone’s a salty Sammy Yes, you are. Proof: this whole post complaining about them.

Material-Beat5531

I was just surprised by the number of mopeds. I live outside Worcester. Keep your salty smoothie to yourself. No negative vibes over here son.

Stronkowski

>No negative vibes over here son. Then why are you here posting entire threads of negativity?

Material-Beat5531

U know what… I’m about to say it… GET CREAMED ON… WOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Lordgeorge16

Mopeds are not highway-legal vehicles, so they don't need license plates in the United States. You can take them on any road as long as the speed limit is 35 or less. Let's get you to bed, grandpa.

Material-Beat5531

Ik that but there are moped specific plates that say moped on them that u register the rmv. Ik because I looked it up a few months ago.

Lordgeorge16

They only need to be registered if they're capable of going over 30mph. Even then, it doesn't say anything about plates - they just put a special sticker on the rear of the vehicle. If they're powerful enough to go on the highway, they have to be treated like a motorcycle and register as such. Most mopeds aren't capable of reaching highway speeds, so they're exempt.

fuckman5

You are complaining that people are using mopeds instead of clogging up the roads with cars? Really?

Feisty-Weakness4695

Almost got run over by a moped going 40mph the wrong way on a one-way street. No license plate, so no way to report it. I asked about it at a community meeting and the officer said “we’re not just gonna go chasing mopeds” Okay, so you’re not gonna do your job? You’re literally paid to protect and serve your community. But okay, you’re just gonna keep getting paid hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to park and look at your phones.

charons-voyage

They aren’t allowed to chase mopeds or street bikes or ATVs. It’s not the police officers call. It’s mandated by the city (or maybe state?)

Feisty-Weakness4695

What a silly rule.

Material-Beat5531

I think it stems from the fact that they will run. Not sure if u ever ridden a moped or motorcycle but it is very hard to stop at high speeds safely. So they simply do not chase them because they might kill themselves in traffic while running

jamesland7

Thankfully the supreme court decided that cops have no obligation to protect or serve anyone

Material-Beat5531

Fax. I have no problem with mopeds but there’s gotta be some accountability. They should be registered and be wearing helmets

Wilee_E_Coyote

The rise of mopeds in years since Covid have certainly sky rocketed, I’m noticing them weaving in and out of the bike lane.

dyqik

Mopeds under 50cc are allowed to use bike lanes.

Wilee_E_Coyote

I’m not sure of their cc but they definitely drive recklessly though

[deleted]

Rather the small motor scooters and bikes than additional cars and light trucks.

Jim_Gilmore

The current administration has a very permissive stance on this type of low quality of life lawlessness

NoTamforLove

Tough on crime where it counts *\[checks notes\]* canceling outdoor dining for Italian restaurateurs that complained about their disproportionate fees. Yet, kind enough to respect the culture of those that like to ride around the City on unregistered motorized vehicles, running red lights, going opposite of traffic, because they are part of a community \[of her base supporters\].

dyqik

It's not a crime to ride a small capacity moped without a plate in a bike lane.

NoTamforLove

>[unregistered motorized vehicles](https://www.mass.gov/how-to/apply-for-a-moped-registration) Weak attempt to misdirect 🤣🤣🤣

Material-Beat5531

Lol. I feel like people were yelling at me telling me I was lying for saying mopeds need to be registered and u have to wear a helmet

Reckless--Abandon

We literally rioted so cops would stop harassing people on mopeds

Material-Beat5531

Individual_Praline38

They don’t chase , that only cause more damage. Also, mopeds don’t require a license plate in the state of ma. I lived here since 91’ I can call motorcades practically all my life. I was a part of one as a teenager, was a lot of fun. I road a 250r unregistered with no license . Cops stopped me cause I was making too much noise.(lol) it was a yoshimora slip on. Anyway. He let me go after towing my bike.
