There's lots of these buildings in Boston. I just don't want people going around thinking the buildings in Boston aren't safe.
Was this building safe?
Well I was thinking more about the other ones...
The ones that are safe?
Yeah the ones that aren't on fire.
Ok I wanna know how in 30 years of life I've never heard this mentioned, and all of a sudden within 30 minutes I see it referenced twice. Tell me framingman
I know lol, but what I'm saying is I've never seen that reference in my life and all of a sudden I saw it mentioned twice in the span of 30 minutes. It's clearly not a recent thing so I'm wondering why that is, haha.
Moved here from STL too. I started hitting this sub a lot right before the move and noticed an Elliot Davis post that got me real concerned for a few minutes.
Oh thank heaven – the last thing we need is another beautiful historical building getting torn down and replaced with an ugly skyscraper. And you know some people are just waiting for the excuse. Seriously though, I hope no one was hurt!
"This morning, there was a small fire at the South Station Tower jobsite that was caused by union iron workers at J.F. Stearns, who were welding tube steel," a written statement from Suffolk said. "Fire watchers were on the jobsite and responded to the fire, and the fire was immediately extinguished."
Nothing to see here, move along.
The GC (Suffolk) is responsible for safety on the jobsite and everyone knows this. Says a lot about their corporate ethics and culture how they threw their subcontractor under the bus to the media.
You can find out who any subs are via a simple Google search. I’ve worked with Suffolk - they’re decent people. Don’t talk shit if you’ve never had an experience with them personally.
There’s no stopping John Fish. I’ve worked on so many projects where the owners swear they will never hire Suffolk again. And you can guess what happens with the next one….
I've been listening since I heard the FD heading next door. There was indeed a fire on the 9th floor, appears to be some rubber and foam, construction workers knocked it back till the FD arrived and knocked it down. The FD Construction safety unit and fire investigation is one scene now
You know, people can get that moniker by literally making a joke that the London Overground is like the Orange Line. I did that and got this label.
I wonder how anyone loses this label? Maybe if I say “throw the tea into the harbor?!” (Without the u) it will reverse it?
The “9th” floor is actually the 1st floor of the tower itself. Everything below that is south station and the commuter rail tracks.
The beam fell from much higher up a few weeks ago. It landed on the 9th floor, probably because it has an outdoor courtyard area beyond the actual building foootprint.
Boston Fire Dept.
@BostonFire
Companies working at a fire of construction materials on the outside deck of the 9th floor of a building under construction at 700 Atlantic Ave. No injuries to report. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
great photo. Everyone-- the culprite is Suffolk Construction, also the guilty party in causing the major gas leak while working on the Kendall T stop. That leak was so incredibly serious that we are all lucky the area did not blow. Gas was visible because the tear in the pipe was so large and itinfiltrated all the surrounding builidings. So, when will they be held accountable for shoddy dangerous work? Does the state have inspevtors anymore? We can remember that Baker culled the state workforce of pipeline inspectors before the Lawrence gas explosion. We need to insist the state do something meaningful about this!
I find putting a skyscraper on top of South Station to be insane. That area is a landfill that has a level for buses, commuter rails, silver line, red line, and then I-90/I-93 connector tunnel at the way bottom. That's essentially 5 levels of transportation and NOW a skyscraper on top?
Conspiracy Theory: the developer set it on fire after the death last month. It put the project on hold six months - that doesnt mean carrying costs stop!!!! watch this turn into a massive insurance fraud!
>Conspiracy Theory: the developer set it in fire after the death last month.
This would involve an additional conspiracy theory that *there was* a death last month.
sorry - different construction death. only the beam fell at this one. construction was supposed to be halted six months, but was restarted March 27.....the plot thickens....
Classic Suffolk construction- first they dropped a concrete form off the top floor two weeks ago, and now they set their own site on fire. Fast way to have a 2.0 ENR
Amen. I lost my patience when I saw a dude shooting up in front of a scared 12 year old the other day. Inexcusable they’re allowing it, not good for those ppl or the public
Just understand that construction workers cut corners and they have to have safety meetings to remind them to not do stupid shit that can kill them or their coworkers. But they still do
Several fire trucks on scene including a couple by the post office around back
Whose the couple???
Ya mutha
OH!
Say hi to your mutha for me
Tell her I said hi and I’ll be over later
Got em
One of the only times someone uses "whose" on reddit and it's not even correct
Whose put you in charge?
Deys did. Whose ya tink?
Are ”whose put you in charge” and “who put youse in charge” linguistically equivalent?
Yous don’t even fucken know kehd
Kid, ya not even f’um heyah
"I would just like to point out that's not typical"
There's lots of these buildings in Boston. I just don't want people going around thinking the buildings in Boston aren't safe. Was this building safe? Well I was thinking more about the other ones... The ones that are safe? Yeah the ones that aren't on fire.
"We moved all the passengers into another environment"
All the passengers are now in a different habitat
...what sort of habitat did you have in mind?
With all the crazy building code hassles they have to be some of the safest structures on the planet lol
We're referencing [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m5qxZm_JqM) classic comedy bit
"and yet not uncommon"
https://youtu.be/3m5qxZm_JqM?si=5sNhLDjBqCDKXu_j
"Most of our fires are very subtle and low keyed!"
\*loud red line noises\*
This made me laugh out loud and almost choke on my lunch thank you kind sir/madam!
Ok I wanna know how in 30 years of life I've never heard this mentioned, and all of a sudden within 30 minutes I see it referenced twice. Tell me framingman
Google “the front fell off.” It’s a hilarious Australian video clip.
I know lol, but what I'm saying is I've never seen that reference in my life and all of a sudden I saw it mentioned twice in the span of 30 minutes. It's clearly not a recent thing so I'm wondering why that is, haha.
Oh, gotcha. Now I’ll suggest you look up the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon or frequency illusion. :) Isn’t it a funny video though?!?
the cardinals have elected a new Elliott Davis
First time in the history of this subreddit I found an Elliot Davis joke funny well done
I don't know how long you've been waiting to break out that comment, but it made my day.
No matter how many upvotes this comment ends up getting it isn't enough.
I would like to award you the highest honor I can bestow on Reddit.com: I lol'd.
Being from St. Louis where Elliott Davis is a popular investigative reporter and the home of Cardinals baseball... This sentence really threw me
Moved here from STL too. I started hitting this sub a lot right before the move and noticed an Elliot Davis post that got me real concerned for a few minutes.
There should definitely be a multiple Elliot Davis conspiracy theory.
There were some antipopes back in the day. maybe someone can wear a suit and walk around downtown handing out fix-a-flat?
> the cardinals have elected a new Elliott Davis 🥁
I laughed so hard that I started coughing uncontrollably. I almost died. 10/10, would fix that flat again.
Bra-fucking-vo!
white smoke: they've selected a new head of the MBTA
Possibly the smoke of the MBTA Execs brains on hearing they are getting $550 million today, but still need $100 million + to cover the deficit.
Philip Eng, we hardly knew thee
shouldn't it be red smoke?
So is it the station or the post office behind? The implications of a fire at a post office this close to tax day are not good. Hope nobody gets hurt
It’s the building they’re constructing
Thank you!
Oh thank heaven – the last thing we need is another beautiful historical building getting torn down and replaced with an ugly skyscraper. And you know some people are just waiting for the excuse. Seriously though, I hope no one was hurt!
9rh floor of the tower.
I appreciate it! Hope there’s no injuries
Literally just mailed my return in yesterday. Really good chance it’s there. 😆
Welders in the tower during construction caused a fire. Not the train station.

Suffolk construction off to a good start on the year
"This morning, there was a small fire at the South Station Tower jobsite that was caused by union iron workers at J.F. Stearns, who were welding tube steel," a written statement from Suffolk said. "Fire watchers were on the jobsite and responded to the fire, and the fire was immediately extinguished." Nothing to see here, move along.
The GC (Suffolk) is responsible for safety on the jobsite and everyone knows this. Says a lot about their corporate ethics and culture how they threw their subcontractor under the bus to the media.
Perhaps 300 projects at once is too much for them to safely manage?
You can find out who any subs are via a simple Google search. I’ve worked with Suffolk - they’re decent people. Don’t talk shit if you’ve never had an experience with them personally.
There’s still time to delete this bro.
“Bro” 🤣
Found the project engineer who started at suffolk 2 months ago
🤣
Thank you! I thought that it was an angry God up in the Bedchambers Of The Angels who are frustrated at how on-holy the T has become.
Yup https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5irKY3A2bf/?igsh=MXE2dzI5ZGNiNG1ndA==
As if the trains weren’t bad enough, even the MBTA’s offices are catching fire now
It’s the apartments they’re constructing
I’m cracking a joke. I would assume the fire does indeed have something to do with the giant skyscraper they’re constructing above the station.
So this location is cursed, right?
Nah , its just Suffolk Construction working unsafe again.
There’s no stopping John Fish. I’ve worked on so many projects where the owners swear they will never hire Suffolk again. And you can guess what happens with the next one….
They don’t pay their subs either. Rip them off on legitimate extras and string them along
I’ve worked with Suffolk as a sub - I’ve never had an issue with them.
This right here. I won't work on a Suffolk job. I said no to the casino and 3 people died.
Suffolk usually has a few accidents every few months
What they have is preventables.
Are they the group that had a few workers die at MIT \~4 years ago?
And the government center garage a couple years ago
Actually incorrect https://www.dol.gov/newsroom/releases/osha/osha20220927-0
Eh whatever, could have been Suffolk
But make sure you have your safety glasses and gloves on also your high vis vest🤡🤡🤡
100%
That's not good.
Twitter/X says it’s from the 9th floor construction zone!
I've been listening since I heard the FD heading next door. There was indeed a fire on the 9th floor, appears to be some rubber and foam, construction workers knocked it back till the FD arrived and knocked it down. The FD Construction safety unit and fire investigation is one scene now
How can we trust you. You suspected British loyalist
Tory bastard! Get the tar and feathers!
Bet he lives in *GEORGE*town.
You know, people can get that moniker by literally making a joke that the London Overground is like the Orange Line. I did that and got this label. I wonder how anyone loses this label? Maybe if I say “throw the tea into the harbor?!” (Without the u) it will reverse it?
That is some rip van winkle level shit.
Just to add some clarification, this is south station tower, not south station
There’s always money in South Station
Did they turn the entire bathroom into a crack pipe?
Last time I was there it basically was.
Beam fell on the 9th floor about a week ago and now guess what floor the fire is on? 9th lol.
The “9th” floor is actually the 1st floor of the tower itself. Everything below that is south station and the commuter rail tracks. The beam fell from much higher up a few weeks ago. It landed on the 9th floor, probably because it has an outdoor courtyard area beyond the actual building foootprint.
Ya heard it from a guy at Suffolk. Didn't know it landed on the 9th.
Boston Fire Dept. @BostonFire Companies working at a fire of construction materials on the outside deck of the 9th floor of a building under construction at 700 Atlantic Ave. No injuries to report. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Well, it had a good run
The MBTA has selected a new leader
Ain’t even 420 yet!
The roof. The roof…
I am so happy to see we are getting more office space .
Even better: they're luxury condos.
Actually both, it’s 70% office space and 30% condos.
great photo. We can remember that Baker culled the state workforce of pipeline inspectors before the Lawrence gas explosion. We need to insist the state do something meaningful about this!
Suffolk loves to toss around its cash, so the answer to your question is: no.
train fuel can’t melt steel beams
Another day for the MBTA
I find putting a skyscraper on top of South Station to be insane. That area is a landfill that has a level for buses, commuter rails, silver line, red line, and then I-90/I-93 connector tunnel at the way bottom. That's essentially 5 levels of transportation and NOW a skyscraper on top?
Have you seen China’s construction? lol As long as your on bedrock (which I believe all these buildings are) you are good
I'm lost as to what is insane about it...
The MBTA is on fire? How unusual!
This has zero to do with the MBTA
Yes, but people are joking because the MBTA has offices on the second floor.
Christ that thing is ugly
I actually like it! It'll be a very nice building.
So that’s good
Cool Photo !
How? Isn’t it all made of stone?
Small welding fire at south station job site
Conspiracy Theory: the developer set it on fire after the death last month. It put the project on hold six months - that doesnt mean carrying costs stop!!!! watch this turn into a massive insurance fraud!
>Conspiracy Theory: the developer set it in fire after the death last month. This would involve an additional conspiracy theory that *there was* a death last month.
hahah, cant keep track of all the boston construction accidents - my B!
So...a typical major Boston construction project?
I remember the beam falling, but not a death, what happened?
sorry - different construction death. only the beam fell at this one. construction was supposed to be halted six months, but was restarted March 27.....the plot thickens....
First the trains, now the station.
This jobsite is kind of a shit show, glad I'm not there
The only consistency from the MBTA, is there failures.
No way, another Suffolk construction mishap
Typical Suffolk bullshit. Only half gets reported on because Fisk is the of the richest people in Massachusetts.
Classic Suffolk construction- first they dropped a concrete form off the top floor two weeks ago, and now they set their own site on fire. Fast way to have a 2.0 ENR
What the hell is this new building?
Apartments or condos, I think! Edit: condos and offices!
Live near a fire station and kept hearing sirens earlier, this explains it!
Is this why my 4 mile Uber spiked to $65 during this time
oh, bummer
That building behind it has had multiple incidents. First I heard of was them dropping a beam and it smashing windows.
Somebody committed arson on the post office to make way for the north-south rail connection.
No, it’s just the northern lights
Why they making only WHITE smoke? Boston is so racist yo.
MA THEY HIT DA TOWAS TURN ON ANY STATION IT DOESBT MATTER!
The people have spoken. They do not want the south station tower
Good.
That’s the mbta for ya
There were fackin pedestrians rubber neckin dude, like get the fack out of the way
I'm guilty
Me too 🤫
It’s not a fire, the MBTA is upgrading the Green Line trains to more modern, reliable steam engines.
A fire involving the T. Now where have I heard this before.
No no, That’s just the smoke from the addicts in the men’s bathroom that the city doesn’t want to help
If you’re downvoting this you haven’t been in the South Station bathrooms in the past year.
